It does, but it is what it is. If you want a lag free BAF at the moment, you should limit it to two teams, and no pets. That simple. If you want three teams, and / or pets, you've got to be willing to accept brutal lag. I've accepted a Mastermind into my BAF trial run two nights ago, but asked him to not summon any pets. Did he feel useless? Perhaps. But you know what? No lag. I'm not saying this is ideal by any means. I'd much rather NCSoft got off their butts and fixed their servers. But in the meantime, I gotta do what I gotta do.
  2. Until the developers fix the lag during BAF trials, the best way to minimize it player side is to limit it to two teams, and limit the use of pets. Or better yet, no pets at all. I've done so a couple of times now, and it's run smooth as silk.

    Indeed, and not enough Brute.

  4. Interesting stuff. I find most interesting that the hero to villain split is supposedly 60% to 40%, but yet not one villain archetype is one of the top 5 level 50 archetypes.

Ah, yes. I keep forgetting about that change. Thanks. Still, Soldiers of Arachnos are awesome and worth giving a try.
  6. I didn't start playing until just before Issue 4, when global friends lists were already available, as were tailors. So, here are my seven, in no particular order:

    1. Inherent Fitness

    2. Super Sidekicking

    3. Rikti War Zone

    4. Brutes

    5. Electric Armor

    6. Side switching - my friends mostly prefer blue side, and I mostly prefer red side ATs. Now I get to have my cake and eat it too!

    7. Imperial City Trading House
  7. Or, now that you'll soon have a level 50 red side toon, you can make a Soldier of Arachnos. Crabs are tasty.

That simply illustrates a potential problem that the devs need to fix.

Creating a Trial that can officially support 24 people for any AT (and any number of the same AT) but then having to limit that number and not allow an AT is just not good enough.

Don't get me wrong. I'd much rather see the BAF (along with Rikti mothership raids), fixed. But as a Rikti mothership raid host that has been dealing with ever increasing Rikti mothership raid lag for almost two years now, I know it's not likely going to be fixed soon. In the meantime, the key to running BAFs smoothly is to limit it to two teams and no pets. Sorry, but it is what it is. FWIW, Masterminds aren't the only ones affected. No pets means exactly that. No Phantom Army, no Lore pets, etc. I believe that Lore pets are one of the reasons why the BAF lag has gotten worse recently. When Issue 20 first launched and everyone was running BAFs, no one had Lore pets. Now, most people do, and we're feeling the effect of it when people bring 'em out.
  9. I believe I discovered a major cause of the lag during BAFs. It's all the damn pets.

I logged on this evening, and my SG leader invited me to join a BAF. It was a full BAF, with three teams of eight each, including a few Masterminds. Just about everyone had Lore pets. I haven't seen such atrocious lag during Rikti mothership raids. It was horrible.

Out of curiosity, after that BAF ended, I immediately started up a second BAF, with two teams of eight each for a total of 16 players. I told everyone that under no circumstances should they summon or use pets.

    Guess what happened?

There was no lag. None. Notta. Zilch. It was smooth running the entire BAF. This was without relogging, restarting the client, or rebooting between the two BAFs.

It seems the key to a smooth BAF is to limit it to 16 players (two teams), and no pets.
  10. When I logged on this evening, my SG leader invited me to join a BAF. It was a full BAF, three teams of eight each, including a few Masterminds. Just about everyone had Lore pets. My God, the lag was atrocious. It was worse than many Rikti mothership raids.

So, out of curiosity, I immediately formed up another BAF. Two teams, eight players each. That's one less team and eight less players than the BAF before. I told everyone not to summon nor use any pets whatsoever.

    Guess what?

No lag. None whatsoever. This was with leaving the client open between the two BAFs, no rebooting, etc.

So, apparently, to have a lag free BAF, you now have to limit it to a maximum of 16 players (two teams), and no pets.
  11. Welcome back to the game.

One word to answer your question:

    Brute.

Brutes are like Tankers, but fun. For primaries, I suggest Claws, Dual Blades, or Super Strength. For secondaries, I suggest Electric Armor, Shield Defense, Super Reflexes, or the good ol' standby of Willpower.

A Brute with Fly and the new Rebirth Destiny power can get any badge there is in the game with no difficulty.
  12. You mean something they "fixed" caused yet another bug? No way, I don't believe it.
  13. I am running City of Heroes on a desktop computer with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and an ATi Radeon HD 5850 video card, with the 11.1 video card driver. Everything has been running smooth as silk, until two weeks ago.

I rolled up a new red side Dual Pistols / Dark Miasma Corruptor, and was running the toon on some missions. Specifically, the Origin of Power mission arc from Ashley McKnight. When I reached one of the people she sent me off to talk to, the dialog window popped up, but it was empty. The game then froze, and about five seconds later, both of my monitors blinked, and the game crashed. Then a message popped up indicating that my display device driver stopped working, and had been restarted. I thought this was odd, but it was the first time it happened, so I just wrote it off.

On Saturday, the same exact scenario occurred again while talking with a contact in Sharkhead Isle.

Yesterday, I was running Dean MacArthur's mission arc, and went to talk to Lt. Chalmers. Sure enough, the dialog window opened, but it was empty. A few seconds later, the game crashed, both monitors flickered, and then a message popped up stating that the display device driver stopped working, and had been restarted. I rebooted my machine, relaunched City of Heroes, and played some more. About 15 minutes later, I pulled up my Dual Pistols / Dark Miasma Corruptor's contact list, and boom. Another game crash with a "display device driver stopped working, and had been restarted" message.

I don't know what's going on here. I've been playing with the same setup for months now, and everything has been working fine until two weeks ago when I started heavily playing this new red side Corruptor. :\

I did some Googling, and apparently the "display device driver stopped working and had been restarted" message often indicates that the motherboard is overheating. I'm going to find and install a temperature monitoring utility tonight, but any other advice would be appreciated.
  14. I'm currently leveling up a Dual Pistols / Dark Miasma Corruptor, and am really enjoying it thus far. Dual Pistols is versatile in that you can either do extra damage with incendiary rounds, or switch to chemical rounds and stack -damage with Darkest Night. It does a decent amount of both single target and AoE damage. Plus, crashless nuke + tar patch = love.

I miss the days of waltzing around Founders' Falls on a baby Defender or Scrapper to join a friend on a mission, and being one shotted by snipers.
  16. Welcome, bmbeeman and Postagulous. Amygdala pretty much already covered everything. If you need anything, just holler.

    Just one little thing...

You say "killing 1000000000000000000000 Rikti" like that is a bad thing.

    USB Error

On Monday evening, I was playing City of Heroes on my desktop computer, when, out of the blue, I received a pop up message stating that Windows 7 found a new USB device, and was attempting to install a device driver for it. It was quickly followed by another pop up message, stating that the device driver installation failed. A minute or so later, a third pop up message came up, stating that a USB device is malfunctioning. However, I only had three USB peripherals connected - a keyboard, a mouse, and a XBox 360 controller - and all three were working just fine. I just ignored it for the night.

Tuesday, I received another "device driver installation failed" pop up message, quickly followed by an "USB device is malfunctioning" pop up message. After that, I would hear a sound every 30 seconds or so, the sound Windows 7 makes when it's found a new device.

Last night, I turned off my power strip, unplugged the keyboard, mouse, and XBox 360 controller, plugged the keyboard, mouse, and XBox 360 controller back in, waited 10 minutes, turned the power strip back on, waited another five minutes, then turned the computer back on. About ten minutes later, I received the same error. I opened the Device Manager, and Windows 7 is apparently seeing an "Unknown Device" attached to a Generic USB hub that has nothing else attached to it.

I performed a System Restore back to last Friday, (before I started receiving this USB error). Ran Windows Update, and rebooted. Ran a full NOD32 antivirus scan, nothing. Ran a full Malwarebytes Antimalware scan, nothing.

Booted my computer up this morning, and sure enough, I received a pop up message stating that Windows 7 found a new USB device, and attempted to install a device driver for it, quickly followed by another pop up message stating that the device driver installation failed.

At this point, I'm at a bit of a loss. Any help would be appreciated. This is a fairly new (seven months old), desktop machine running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.
  19. No, and there are no indications they plan on revisiting PvP 2.0 anytime soon, if ever.
