It's a combination of two things. Firstly, the City of Heroes player population is at an all time low. Secondly, the remaining players are mostly running Incarnate trials, leaving the pre-level 50 content high and dry. Between the two, the server is a ghost town outside of the Rikti War Zone. I started my Dual Pistols / Dark Miasma Corruptor back in March, and it took over a hour to get the minimum number of players together for certain task forces and such. A couple of times I had to give up because I couldn't get enough people together to start something. I never had that occur while leveling any toon prior.

Let's face it. If City of Heroes was doing well, it wouldn't be going free-to-play.
  2. People really seem to be missing the whole point of the CAPE PvP League. This PvP League was intended for Champion server PvPers. Not for City of Heroes PvPers as a whole. It was never intended to be advertised outside of the Champion server forum and the CAPE forums. Exit asked about advertising the PvP league on other servers and in the PvP forums, but was specifically told not to and that this PvP league was for Champion server players. Artic advertised it all over anyway.

How many of the 8 people that want to join ever played on Champion outside of a PvP league?
  3. Now that the game is going free to play in an effort to attract new players, and Issue 21 will allow everyone to start any AT on either side, it's time to get rid of Defenders and Tankers.

Defenders and Tankers are obsolete ATs. There's no real point to them now. Everything they can do, a Corruptor and Brute can do just as well while pumping out more damage. Best to just get rid of them so new players don't wind up making them, only to play them and become bitterly disappointed that their Corruptor and Brute cohorts do more damage and are just as survivable.

For current Defenders and Tankers, issue a one time AT and power set respec token and force them to use it when they next log on.

Like I tell anyone that considers rolling a Tanker... "Make a Brute. They're like Tankers... but fun!"

LOL. When I was a wee lad, I kept counting down to 1987 so I could see Buck Rogers and the last deep space probe.

Edit: You linked to the second season intro though, with Hawk and everything.

HOWEVER.... the idea that the VIP server will be paradise with only intelligent players and perfectly elegant English in broadcast is never going to happen. There has been subscription up to this point and STILL we've had some serious retards playing the game.
No, the new VIP server won't be paradise, but it'll be better than the F2P servers.

Also, there's a new interview up.

Speaking about new items and costume pieces Brand Manager Hosin Lee said: “One of the most popular items is going to be something called an enhancement unslotter. Right now when you do a respect in City of Heroes you have to do the entire character, you can’t do one power at a time, we’re going to give players the ability to basically do respecs a la carte. We’re also granting players new costume parts. It’s got some great features players have been asking for once again such as glowing energy wings to make you look more angelic, you can leave a trail of fire behind you when you’re running, things like that. As well as other consumables such as double xp boosts, ability summons, temporary pets and a lot more than that.”
Sweet! So now it can always be double XP weekend... for the right price.

Wow. They really are copying Champions Online' hybrid model to a tee. :\

Because I've seen what going free-to-play did to another MMOG, and watched as their version of zone chat became overrun by free players that never left high school. No thanks. I'll just take my ball and move over to the VIP server.

I very much doubt @globals will be changing. There's the possibility of name loss and SG name loss, but since it'll be a brand new server, you can also potentially finally get those names you wanted.

I'll be sad to leave Champion, but I'd much rather play on a server with people that are invested in the game.
  9. According to Zwillinger, the new VIP only server will be a brand new server, not any of the existing ones. All of the existing servers will be open to free to play players. Yep, definitely leaving Champion for this new VIP only server.
  10. City of Heroes is going free to play.

    Quote:
That change is City of Heroes Freedom, a combination of a new hybrid business model for the game that will add a plethora of new rewards, subscription option, and content for all players of the game. The fact that it will open the game up to a free-to-play model is almost incidental considering the other sweeping changes coming to the game as a whole.

The longstanding Veteran Rewards system will be getting overhauled into a new Paragon Rewards system, which will offer all of the extant rewards along with a huge number of additional bonuses on a monthly basis. Subscribers will be upgraded to VIP Players, gaining access not only to priority queues and a special VIP-only server but to an exclusive signature story arc every month, allowing characters to experience ongoing stories alongside the important lore characters of Paragon City and the Rogue Isles. VIP players will also be gaining a free monthly stipend of Paragon Points for the game's new cash store, which will allow players access to new costumes, new power sets, and even new weapon and usage styles for existing sets. City of Heroes players should take a look at the official site and get ready for the newest upgrade to the game -- a solid dose of old-school freedom.
So, the game is officially going free to play. There will be a subscriber only server, and more micro transactions.

    Anyone not see this coming?

Edit: Some new information here and here.

Looks like I'll be kissing Champion good bye and move off to whatever the subscriber only server is.
  11. I have a level 50 Magic origin Corruptor that started as a villain, and just made the switch to full hero. For giggles, I tried to unlock the Magic origin store in Brickstown. Except I can't. When I first talked to Serafina, she made some mention of doing her a favor, but the only options were "Ask about this store," or "leave." When I clicked on "Ask about the store," it took me to her store, but there was nothing available to purchase. I came back a bit later, and now she just mentions something about establishing a link to the entities, but still nothing available to purchase in her store.

Is this a bug, or working as intended?
  12. I just want to say that Dual Pistols / Dark Miasma Corruptors rock.

    That is all.

    Redside Power

I don't know about other servers, but Champion's redside population has always been rather anemic. Since Going Rogue, it's almost died completely as the majority of the few that did have redside toons have moved them blueside.

  16. I have a newly dinged level 50 Dual Pistols / Dark Miasma Corruptor. Soon, I will begin working on Incarnating the character. I know I want the Cardiac Core Paragon Alpha, as well as the Clarion Core Epiphany Destiny, but I can't decide on which Interface, Judgement, and Lore to take. Any advice would be appreciated.

In case it would be of any help, here is my current build:

Yep. I've been using the red villain theme since it was introduced, as I much prefer dark red over dark blue. Like you, when I noticed the forums were using the dark blue skin, I assumed that I had been logged out. Nope. So I checked my options, and it listed me as still using the "Villain" theme. Just to be on the safe side, I saved my options. Still blue.

  21. Dual Pistols / Dark Miasma Corruptor.

    For a few reasons:

    1. Dark Miasma does a lot of mitigation. Open up with Fearsome Stare, lay down a Tar Patch, and go to town on a buffet of baddies.

    2. It's all debuffs, so no buffing your teammates every 90 seconds.

    3. Hail of Bullets is a crashless PbAoE nuke, meaning you have to be in melee range. Which I find myself being in a lot by habit. So might as well make the most of it! Plus, it's sexy.

It's pretty dang win, and you contribute a lot to teams with your debuffs.
