For instance , since issue 4 got live i have read that the Integration power has been modified . My Integration power on my scrapper is currently slotted with 5 healing single origin enh and 1 endurance reduction enh . I have no way to know if this configuration is optimal without having to get on this forum and ask "expert players" who do extensive testing to get a rough answer. In my opinion i think it isnt a convenient way to inform players about enhancements and slotting .

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Something I've always wondered...

Why do people feel the need that they *have* to be "Optimal" to have fun? Why does everything have to boil down to the numbers?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Ill answer that by saying that numbers are even more important now with PvP because there is a real competition with players now ( I will do some fights in PvP ) and it is obvious that the "optimal" build will get an edge and that victory or defeat "could" in the end depend upon the slotting of single little Single Origin Enh . It really is that simple . You may not agree with all that but for someone who think his rating is important , it is important . Numbers indeed are important .
  2. Dear Cuppajo ,

Dev team is certainly aware that all the modifications they have done to so many powers affected the way enhancements work into them .

Currently , as a "normal" player , i have absolutely no convenient way to know if i am wasting my precious enhencements i paid huge price for when im slotting them into my powers . I feel like im blindly slotting and it is very hard to know if i have gone over the cap for a power and in the end it leads to some frustration .

So , Cuppajo could you please convince the Dev team to either make a mouse-over information menu ( in the enhancement menu ) that could give players useful informations about how not to waste slots and enhancements ; or could you at least please ask the Dev Team to publish official information about that stuff on the website ( where it could be easily accessed without using the search engine ) ?

Enhancements and the way to use them has been a big concern to me since i bought the game . Reliable infos about them always were hard to get ( about nothing in the game manual , often outdated or unnoficial on the websites ) . I cant agree with the Dev team if their thinking is to let players "guess" how work things . It can contribute unvoluntarily to make our gaming experience less entertaining . I have been playing since almost a year and i still have no idea what some enhancements actually do ( like the Activation ones )

Anyway , im not sure it was the right place to post this neverending concern and im thinking about sending a PM too . If this message ever get to the eyes of the dev team then i will be very grateful .

    Thanks
  3. Awww...All these changes are confusing me so much. Now i just fear that i wont be able to play with my toons like i used to a few months ago . Am i losing faith in the game ? I dont know but its getting very hard to always rethink my toons and adapt to all these nerfs/modifications and everytime i feel that my ATs are losing something cool . In my own opinion , i keep thinking that Issue 2 was the golden age of this game . It was a great issue because there was about only good news for most players ( capes , badges , new zone , respec , etc .. ) . Last year , i was impatiently waiting the new issue . It all changed with Issue 3 ... when they start to make major changes to a game i thought was already entertaining and fun enough as is . Even if they finally decided to roll back some changes like the one about the Bosses , i still felt that the game was changing too fast for myself ... For me these days , it looks like a surprise bag and while im just starting to adapt to a change , theres already another one coming out that changes everything again ... I try to read alot the forums to learn what i can about the game but it gets tiring ... One day , people say that you need to slot a power that way , a month after they say its not good anymore and now you should slot it that way or even better respec it and take that other power instead ... I always have the feeling im doing something wrong and since i havent access to unlimited respecs on live , im always worried . I know its just a game but still , id like for once to be able to play with a toon i like without being worried of the incoming next issue . Finally i used to be impatient to see new content but since Issue 3 , new content for me is something to be worried about because it means that things i got to like in the game could get nerfed/changed/modified/removed etc ... And that i dont like .

My 2 cents in the pot for what matters

Give them time. This is a good decicion but it's not just a roll back to what it was before... It's sort of that plus stuff from I3 combined in a new way, and even some totaly new stuff like recoding to have Lt level HP and Damage output combined with the Name costume and powers of bosses from every single mission. It's gotta be done slowly and carefully or you'll wind up with more misions with black holes, or mobs under stairs and what not.

Give them time folks. In the mean time if your having trouble at particular hours finding teams, you know once your past level 10 you can even sk someone way lower to assist you in a mision. They ramp up to near your level just have fewer slots and lesser enhancements... But may have powers that can still help. I know, I know some of them may be total noobs but I think you will find them more willing to listen to advice from you level 40 well established hero then your new level 6 experimental alt. Granted having TP friend helps here or you'll have to sk and walk the street with them but still... If your having trouble finding someone your level.... Even checking to see if theyre's some higher level hero out there willing to help with that one mission via request channel might not be a bad idea.

    Good luck,

    Demon Hunter

You just dont get it man ... Having more teamates makes missons even more deadly because the real damn problem with bosses is that they do so much damages that they can kill you with one single hit ... Having more teamates increases chances to find even more of these ridiculous bosses in any mission instance so it really isnt a good idea to ask for help .

Roll back the bosses please . It really is that simple.
  6. Oh man , im SO impressed ... You soloed it with an Emp defender that was what level ??? Oh level 27 you said ??? No wonder why you found it easy . You had much outleveled the mission . You should have tried it at level 20 like most heroes.

    Boss Changes

Rolling back the bosses doesnt require any new programing right ? Im wondering then , why werent they rolled back already ?

There is no way ill do a Respec TF unless they get rolled back . And bosses still appear in many missions even when playing alone at Hard Boiled ... Why just not rolling them back already and fix whatever stuff you are working on after ? Playing with good old Issue 2 mobs would make me so happy .

I'll admit I haven't read all the pages of this thread ... too tired but I did want to throw my opinion in with the rest.

I do like the new boss changes, solo or teamed it adds a dangerous quality to teaming that was lacking before. Without the threat of death I am one of the ones that got quickly bored.

I regularly team up with a Defender and we are always saying how even on "invincibility" mode the missions are too easy. We actually get happy when there are a couple bosses next to each other in our missions.

Anyway these are just my opinions,

If you want the "threat of death" you now have a slider that you can push to the extreme setting ! There was no need to force everyone into this situation . I could kill for hours bosses without being in real danger and still not get bored . You see ? Everyone is different . LEts just hope Statesman will come with something acceptable for both of us

    Boss Changes

Serisously , thats discouraging ... Tonight i played with my Rifle / Energy level 27 blaster . I was in Independence Port doing some street sweeping with a level 24 tank i got the luck to encounter . That was a great alliance we made i could say . He was alone fighting some Family goons and of course he was winning ( since tanks can take punishment forever ) . However , i was watching him and i noticed that his fight was lasting very long , way too long ... I told him that in team i could use my AoE attacks and that we could defeat lot of enemies faster so it wouldnt hurt his xps . The fact is that he was the one who did me a favor by taking me with him . As a blaster , i pretty much can accomplish nothing at all alone nowadays . For me , any xps i would get with him would be fine since i can barely get any if i stay alone . So it is , we fought for 2 hours in IP and he got some decent xps with me since we were fighting level 26-27 minions and lts . I was really helpful since these baddies were conning green and blue to me so my AoE attacks were getting them down at a fast pace . Still , in 2 hours with this tank , i didnt even got half a bubble toward level 28 , of course i was getting only 50% of my xps since blasters are always in debt grrrr ... Anyway , as a blaster i dont really get to choose anything when it comes to get on a team . Any meatshield that can take damages for you do you a favor and its for me better than being alone getting more debt . It was really 2 hours wasted to remove some debt and get a handfull of xps . After my teamate leveled up he said he had to leave and i was left once more standing alone near IP train station . I started again looking for any and i say really any ( blasters arent picky nowadays ) team but it was to no avail ... There is no love for blasters anymore in CoH . We are all falling into the unreliable and help beggar category . So many see us as a 5th wheel for the wagon . Yes , we bring some good damages but we are in now way as shiny as we used to be . We are the last AT to make it on a team to fill an empty spot when people cant get an extra scrapper ( or even any extra second tank that makes people feel safer than with a blaster ) . Where is the love for the blasters ? Love is gone when people realized that even with a 5 slotted dmg snipe attack with build up we couldnt even take to half hp an even con boss . Love is gone for the blasters when people realized that if there is a minimal lack of luck , attention , skill or whatever , the team was to lose a blaster teamate within one or two shots . Love is gone for the blasters because their only and really only duty in a team is to deal massive damages but for some reasons damage dont seem to be nearly as massive as they used to be . Thats really discouraging and thanks god , i was wise enough to make a scrapper and a tank so i can put once more my blaster into a cryogenic tank .

Issue 3 dealt a serious blow to many ATs , most players felt the changes one way or another . Many players have already or will adapt , no doubt . However , for many people that are still trying to play blasters , the last boss modification really makes us even more vulnerable than we already were and far from making people wanting us in a team , they make people run away from us or saying that polite sentence : " A blaster ? Im sorry , we arent playing a hard boiled mission and we would prefer to have an extra scrapper or tank just in case things get ugly ... We need tough guys you see ? " .

( I do not think i am exagerating this , everytime i get on the server with a blaster , getting on a team is always complicated , especially for doing a TF , Trial or Respec mission . People have had lot of bad experiences with blasters on their team and people dont like bad experiences . They tend to play safe and the reputation of blasters as a glass cannon , as true as it is , often rebuke people . Blaster was too often considered as the "extra" attacker or the AT the team can afford to lose in a battle when tanks and scrappers are around . Blasters can or ... used to be able to make a real difference but all these extended fights against these tougher bosses is making them look weak and less efficient as they used to be . Of course , AoE attacks can still help a lot if a tank is present in team . But if you can have instead a bunch of scrappers that can do the job almost as fast in your team , who would you hire ? Im not saying to nerf scrappers but maybe consider to make blasters able to do devastating attacks like they used to do . Even back to Issue 2 , scrappers could easily challenge blasters for a spot in a team but since Issue 3 , scrappers would win the spot in the team almost everytime . )

Attention all scrapper players : I also play a scrapper and im not wishing to see scrappers modified or whatever ( I already got scared enough when Issue 3 came out ) . Im just expressing my point of view about the future of blasters , their role in a team and their solo survivability .

Someone concerned about blasters all around rating

    CuppaJo,

I feel that Statesman mis-understood question 5 and would like to have him re-answer it. The question wasn't asking why there was a mission slider now. The mission slider is a great idea and his question would answer "why is there a mission slider" just fine.

The question is, why did they make a mission slider AND increase BASE boss difficulty level (at level 25+)? For those of us who dont want to increase the slider, we are still forced into a greater difficulty in missions because of the bosses are much harder even at the default difficulty.

Therefore, since I want to control when I do or don't face a boss, and don't want to be put off halfway through a mission, I will instead be LESS likely to do missions and more likely to street sweep, because on the streets I can avoid these harder bosses or take them on only when my tray is full of inspiration.

So, why BOTH? Why increase bosses for everyone, even builds who were having problems with them already? Was the mission slider not enough? The Boss Upgrade undermines the level slider. Could we get a -1 level on the slider that just scales the Bosses to the old way? Then I'd do missions again.

I think that was the point of question 5.

Could he re-answer this question with that in mind?

    Thanks,

    Lewis

Except for the fact that Statesman has said that ALL ATs should be able to solo, that's almost a good point.

    [/ QUOTE ]

That's actually only part of what I've said. Solo players should always have something to do...I've never said that everything is solo-able (some missions are, others aren't), or that every Archetype can solo as effectively as another.

If a player sees a boss of his level, he should probably get help...

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm in a pretty bad boat at this point because of these changes. I'm 2 bubbles into lvl38 and all my contacts give me the 'See me at level 39' schtick. There's hardly anyone on Protector anymore so it's pretty difficult to get a group together for the 2nd respec trial or finding a group for the Sewers or Eden trials. And please don't say 'Find another server' because I have too much time invested on that one and unless a character transfer option is available, its a moot point.

    What am I left with?

Street hunting. Street hunting were pretty much every group of baddies that are even anywhere near profitable (I mainly look for blues with white to orange bosses) for me are no longer manageable.

Crey Protectors and PP's are essentially off-limits. No way am I going near these guys with this upped garbage. Take on Force-Fielders with about 50% more health and increased damage? Hah. Take on guys that 99% are able to get off Moment of Glory / Unstoppable / Elude with scrapper damages? I've already got my third debt badge thank you very much.

Freaks? Take on a Freak tank that can ressurect himself after the difficulty increase? Essentially fighting two bosses? Nope, not happening.

Devouring Earth? I absolutely refuse to fight these things. I had enough of them through the story arcs and the contacts. Hate them with a passion.

What am I left with? I'm too low for Peregrine Island, no one will group with a level 38 they think wants Power Levels. About the only things left are bossless 5th / Council and Circle of Thorns. Both of which only net me less than 100 exp per and at ~1.25 million exp to get to 39, that'll take a loooonnnnggg time. The Abandoned Sewers are a deathtrap. Tried that place, tried sniping / pulling and ended up getting spit on to death.

I hate to say it, but I'm losing faith in this game as well as not having any fun. Logged in twice today and just couldn't bring myself to do anything. I'm very close to closing my account and moving on to something else. I've been here since August 31 and had a great time. I REALLY do not like the direction this game is taking.

Unless some decisions are reversed (and soon) I have a feeling a lot of the casual gamers, those who haven't already left the building, will be mosing on. Statesman, maybe you should eat some crow and admit that this wasn't a good change or well thought out.

Maybe I should give World of Warcraft a try. If it's good enough to hook Tycho and Gabe, then it oughta be good enough for me...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Oh man , i sooo hear ya ... To tell the truth , if i hadnt been powerleveled herding krakens in the sewer trial teamed with "optimal builded AT" friends , i would now be exactly where you are and i remember i was so close to just click : Uninstall ...

This situation is completely abnormal . Something is definitely wrong with this game . Devs just dont seem to agree with many players about WHAT fun should be .
  15. [ QUOTE ]
I've got one more thing to add:

In game design, it's all very well and good to say, "Here is the ideal that I have in my vision." The problem is that when vision meets real people in the form of players, the measure of success is whether or not those players are having fun, not whether you have achieved whatever theoretical design goal you set out to achieve. "Fun" is a particularly crucial factor in a paid MMORPG, because fun equates to subscriptions which equate to revenue.

People have fun in different ways. Some people like to solo, some people like to group, some like to do both. Some people like their games to be as challenging as possible. Other people like their games to be pretty brainless and easy. Some people like having a lot of luck in the equation. Other people like planning to significantly reduce the role that luck plays.

City of Heroes can potentially accomodate all of these desires, via the use of the mission difficulty slider. The relative advancement rates of people with different levels of "fun" can be equalized out by changing the XP values awarded -- or making the maps bigger or smaller. (So, for instance, if you want blue cons rather than white cons, the map expands so in the end you have to wipe more of them to finish.)

When a lot of people are posting on the forums that something is not fun, this is a warning, because plenty of people will simply stop playing rather than deciding to gripe on the forums. Moreover, the activities that players are engaging in are clear indications of where the fun is and isn't, or of what goals people are trying to achieve (I suspect, for instance, that the farming/herding/PLing behaviors are effectively a statement of "leveling up the usual way is sufficiently time-consuming and boring that I am willing to engage in periods of incredible tedium in order to avoid a longer period of mediocrely interesting play").

Yes, people will tolerate some changes that decrease fun, if other things are added which increase fun. Ultimately, though, what is going to determine longevity of subscriptions is fun, not how long it takes to get to level X. Plenty of people will abandon existing achievements in order to go do something more fun -- hours invested just makes it harder to leave.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You are 100% right . Thats exactly what i think too . And lets not hide the truth anymore , above level 40 , powerleveling ( kora missions and werewolves herding ) IS the norm nowadays . Clever devs should ask themselve why it has come that MOST players rely on that stuff to level up . And i suspect that there are ways like these around the game to powerlevel people from level 1 to 50 . Cant blame them thought , the game has either become boring , either too hard , either too slow , either too frustrating , either too time consuming , either too solo unfriendly , either whatever ... Also , what doesnt much help is that many players ( my friends for certain ) feel like they are "rushed" to get to level 50 so they can try these new ATs ( and they dont want to play for months to get to try them ) . Same thing for "epic" new powers ... Its exactly the same as it was when the capes came out at Issue2 , everyone under level 20 were trying by all means to get there as quick as they could .

All CoH is SET toward "progression" . Actually there is nothing else to do than leveling up and thats just what people are tryin to do . There is no roleplay , minigames or any stuff in the game that people can enjoy besides collecting badges ( which is cool imho ) . As soon as you create a toon and get out of the tutorial , you can feel the "need" for level progression . NO ONE ever told me " Hey , level 9 is cool , i think ill take a break at that level and try not to level up because its fun" Anyway , im going off my point ... which is in the end that very single question :

Is leveling up in CoH becoming too boring and time consuming ?

If yes is what most people think , then , WHY devs are trying to make it even harder ( slower ) for most of the people ?

Which brings another question to me : Could it be possible for players to play the game at their very own personal pace so they can get the fun they want ?

To the devs : Maybe if you make leveling a bit easyer you will end someday with a bunch of bored level 50 players . However , i suspect that you will get way before that a huge bunch of bored and frustrated players hanging around all levels in the game .

Im not certain what the solution is but what we have now with these new "improved" bosses is no good .

Because at level 40 I can stand toe to toe with a pair of level 43 Fake Nemesis bosses and never have to worry about dying no matter how long I stand there, perhaps?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Go try that against a pair of level 39 Sappers Its easy for any AT to look great when you fight against mobs that cant go through your defences but is that a bug ? All ATs have their "prefered" enemies i think . Ill admit all my scrappers do good against Nemesis , they arent doing as good against carnies and maltas 3 levels higher however . Saying that an AT need the nerf bat because some players choose to pick their fights wisely is very lame .
  17. Ok Statesman , you succeeded to scare me well . I have a lev 35 MA/REgen scrapper and i dont have Stamina because i prefered to have more attack moves for the show . I have 6 slotted QR and i barely succeed to keep active IH and Integration while waging an extended fight against Mobs who have high rez or high hp like Tank Swipers. If you are to augment endurance cost of IH or nerf it i might as well already get my ticket for the hospital

The very true problem in your game is that you had no choice but to think of it taking into account Hasten and Stamina . These only 2 powers are what makes the real difference between an uber and a gimped toon . If you want to balance stuff for everyone you might want to get a closer look at how well can work toons who have neither of these 2 powers . These are the only 2 critical powers that affect the ensemble of all the others . When you test an AT i really hope that you are taking into account if they are using these 2 powers . 3 months ago i wasnt convinced yet that they were such a necessity but now i have learned my lesson well . It really is that simple . As soon as ANY of my toon get these 2 powers heavilly slotted it changes my playing experience overall . Everything becomes way easyer and of course i die way less often . And everytime i try building an AT without using these 2 it ends by nerfing myself by choice . Not taking them feels like AT automutilation and its most unfortunated . I wish any AT without Stamina and Hasten could do AS great as the ones who have them but so far it is much unlikely . I am not calling for a nerf because like i said i learned my lesson and now always get these 2 powers ASAP . However all im saying is that BEFORE modifying powers which currently belong to AT pools it might be good to take into consideration that "maybe" it is in fact Stamina and Hasten that makes these powers looking maybe Over Efficient .

Was just my 2 cents . Anyway since stuff seem to be pending , ill just stop playing my scrapper and go play with what i consider to be THE winning formula ( The AT that can go through everything , alone if need be ) , im calling my Fire/Rad Controller . And since you nerfed him already , i feel a bit safer with him ( Not a big issue anyway since he is so good that he managed to make it to 50 already and is now powerleveling the poor needy Non-controller AT in PI )

Awaiting to see how much damage the soon coming nerf bat will do

  19. Some people were making in another thread comparisons with old Diablo 2 which certainly has been a Smash Hit in its time . What was fun in Diablo 2 ? First there was the "accumulation concept" , there was so much items to find that it was making the game exciting especially with the random drop . All these items , especially the unique ones often got players making new chars so they can try these great stuff they were finding .

Second : Level progression was ULTRA fast , about every hour or so whatever the level below 90 , one could expect to gain new power for his char and it indeed made the game a hook . In about a single day you could have a char able to at least try ALL the skills of his skilltree . Level progression was getting really slower only past the highest level so anyone had the chance to play with a fully skilled character long before level 80 or so .

Third : Simplicity of the game while having a lot of content for people who look at numbers and are min/maxing gave a lot of player plenty of hours to toy with the game .

Forth : Free play , yes lets say it , playing diablo online was free and it was an advantage for obvious reasons . However , people couldnt expect any real support and it was a huge let down in the later days .

Fifth : Fast action and very intuitive playing made the game appealing to all kind of crowd for quite awhile . People got bored and left often the game for awhile . But suddenly you got back that "need" to play and getting back online was easy business .

Ok , Diablo 2 had many flaws and problems . But in the end , overall , many people got sucked in that game for months . Still today , many people are talking about Diablo 2 as maybe the Best Game ever . I dont know if its still true. However ,it is a fact that Diablo 2 certainly was on the Top 10 for many months and only a very few gamer never tried this game and even fewer never had heard about it .

Ok , these were my toughts about Diablo 2 . Now , what was I expecting when i bought CoH and am i satisfied so far ? Remember , its only my owns views and i only speak for myself here .

First : I was looking for something different . I was tired of Medieval Fantasy settings and sword and sorcery stuff. CoH entirely gets the points here . 10/10

Second : I was looking for fast action and a game that wasnt too hard on my brain like D2 was . I just wanted to be able to log and to kill some stuff on the fly . CoH gave me that so far .
    10/10

Third : I was looking to be able to improve my char fast so i can test many many builds quickly and be able to toy with all the skills available . CoH so far dont let me achieve this goal quick enough . For me , leveling here is too time-consuming as it is and when my chars barely reach level 14 or 15 im starting to get bored because the next skill available seem too far away to get and just a time-sink . Thats the worst problem i see in CoH so far . And i do know that some other MMO are even worst and i dont play them . 3/10

Forth : I was looking for diversity and customization options. Ill break this point in two parts . Hero costume customization is probably the best i have ever saw ! Possibilities are almost endless . For that 10/10 . About items finding and treasure hunting , its really poor . Ok , the badges are making it better now but these arent the kind of stuff you can trade with people or really use to enhance your char . These are more achievements even if some actually do something . Enhancements are the only stuff that a monster can drop and people certainly arent playing for the treasure drops in CoH . 5/10 .

Fifth : I was looking for good game support , constant updates and lag free servers . So far so good . Even if the game dont meet my personal expectations i must say the Devs are indeed making updates , patches and adding new content. At least i know they are here doing something . 10/10

Well , thats what i could think about at the moment . What critical move could do the Dev Team to keep me hooked at this game in the end ? For me it would be the ability to get to level 30 far more quicker than it is actually . And when i say far more quicker i really mean it . It is just the way i like to play and again its only MY point of view . All other views are as valid .
