That is not a smart thing to say. Fortitude is a game changer.
My Plant/Emp (who has Fort but not Absorb Pain or Rez, because I don't need them) did a Citidel TF last week with a Empathy defender who skipped Fort but had the medicine pool and all of the other heals (and a total 2 attacks)...
Then on the last mish he dropped before he got to Vandal and no-one noticed until afterwards* -
Quote:I'm pretty sure there will be. In fact this side of the pond I thought digital download was the only way to get it when it was announced (may have changed since).Alright, with all the rambling and wild mass guessing and paranoid ranting I've been hearing here and there from some very vocal minorities, I'm having minor difficulties figuring out what's truth and what's baseless rumormongering.
My question is, hopefully, rather straightforward:
Will there be a downloadable version of the complete GR? Not the pre-purchase one, but the complete one with the extra month and bonus items that's coming out in July(?). I've been hearing mentions of a boxed edition but worryingly nonexistant talk of electronic versions.
Due to reasons I won't get into here, obtaining a boxed edition would be difficult for me. Should I just preorder it now while it's in the online store and buy the bonus pack later? I've been holding out so far because I heard the complete pack will give you more bang for your buck (a free month of play among other things).
I've only recently come back to the game and haven't been keeping up to date with this sort of info, you see. Clarifications from someone in the know would be most appreciated. -
I did last night. Bloody useless random Pain Dom MMs. He did have Rez though, which is was awfully proud of (and 3 of the heals which he never used. Rezzes happened instantly though).
Of course you don't need a healer much in the game. You do need someone to be actually using their primary and secondary and not just sticking everything on Aggressive and doing bugger all else though.

Ok, I'm good now. -
Quote:And "from", in this case being used as a synonym regarding the "origin" of the game, thus referring to the past.
No, from referring to the company releasing the game, it isn't tense dependent in this case.
I drink coffee from a cup
This game comes from Paragon Studios. -
Quote:Psssst! Dave... over here.
I'll whisper this so as not to cause any embarassment - they ARE "from" the same company, Cryptic developed both games. Then most of the Cryptic developers involved switched over to NCSoft when given the chance. If you're quick you could maybe edit your earlier post and no-one will be any the wiser...
No they were from the same company. They are not from the same company now.
"Are" being the present tense and all. -

Shoggoth on Stage in Dublin
Yes, maniacs in Ireland have succeeded in putting A Shoggoth on the Roof on stage. Details to coming soon.

Why have I not heard about this before now???
Actually one drawback to this "release chunks early" approach is that we get gluts of whatever has just been released for 2-3 weeks (there are going to be sooooo many Demons running around whenever i17 comes out) rather than a more varied selection of new characters running about the newbie zones. -
The Rogue Islands is going to be awash with Demons mid April isn't it?
Maybe that's one drawback to this early release mechanism they're doing for GR, rather than teams being made up of say Demon MMs, Dual Pistol Corrupters, Elec Doms and wavy handy brutes in June/July we get massive gluts of each one released beforehand for a week or two and then they die down again. -
Quote:Look at just about any game forums and you'll see posts asking for any feature ever featured in any other game* and just as many posts asking the devs not to develop the same feature...
Though, perhaps somewhat biased, I reckon it's fair to say that the CoX boards have never (or very rarely) been as bad for this as most other MMO boards.
Both CO and CoX are good games and different enouh to both have a place in the world - there's no real need for either to fear the other.

Dammit I want the ability for my character to buy Ailsbury Road / Mayfair / Park Place (delete where appropriate) and build a hotel on it. -
Hopefully nothing. Doing it once out of the blue, funny and unexpected. Doing it every year, tired and predicable.*
Freem was a mildly amusing but overrated joke / meme (please no more memes. Please). City of Heroes 1980 or whatever it was was rather crap.

Quote:Agree on peoples urge to spam AOE immobs, I tend to ask them to play smart and hold off on the immobs if there's a patch up. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It's most lethal in the teens when Ice Patch is probably the best AOE control going and inexperienced controllers are going crazy with their new AOE "control". Tends to get them killed as well.I never play my ice troller anymore for this reason. The problem isn't me using immobs, it's other people spamming aoe immobs like it's going out of style.
Don't think at this stage it'll be changed though, a chunk of characters rely on the AOE immob providing -knockback (Storm most notably, but my Claws/Elec Brute uses it too) and it's been this way for so long it's probably unlikely to change now.
I do think it's terrible design that Ice and Earths Holds provide -knockback as well though and that should be changed.*
So unless they're a Grav or Plant I ask them to hold off caging enemies on ice patches for a bit, and generally people are happy to do so. Grav it's unnecessary to ask them to stop (it doesn't give knockdown resistance) and Plants tend not to have a choice (Creepers manages to both do knockdown via vines and provide knockback protection via Immob patches, as does Fly Trap and Roots) and just live with it. -
Quote:Good point, I have Aid Self to heal and Power Sink would probably be more useful than a pet that's up 1/3rd of the time.I have a fitness-free ice/psi. To do so, I've found the Mu mastery is a must for the Power Sink power. I noticed you didn't list that one. I'd take it over the healing pet any day as he'll spend more time healing jack then you.
Here's an IOed build focusing on Frankenslotting, +HP and +Recovery.

Quote:Providing you have ToolTips enabled, you can simply open your Target window and mouseover the HP bar. Not only will it tell you the HP/End the foe started with, it tells you how much it has remaining as well. I usually keep my "ToolTip Delay" turned down specifically for this feature. It's helpful to see when a main boss is about to hit a specific hp% value for ambush reasons (for example).
You can also use the Power Analyzer Mk I/II/III powers and the Combat Attributes window to see the specific value also, as well as a lot of other information about the foe.
You can turn down ToolTip Delay? I never knew that. Handy! -
Vanguard are not a roadblock to all characters and builds by any means (hell my Grav/TA has soloed several of those missions happily).

Quote:So happy they didn't go with that, given the usual approach at creating "remote Irish towns" (ie cloth caps, fiddles, bizarre accents and red headed cailins everywhere).Eden is remote, but it's still part of the "mindscape" of Paragon City. It's tied in to the whole Devouring Earth storyline which is city-wide. Croatao doesn't tie in to anything outside of itself. There's no connection to Paragon City beyond the railroad station -- it might just as well have been some remote Irish town, accessed through a Midnighter Club door. (That would actually have made a lot more sense in many ways.)
There's little connecting Croatoa to Irish mythology either really, there's no bearing between the two other than the names. Tuatha De Danann are more akin to fey folk in most Irish myths (like most myths and legends they aren't consistently portrayed in them either, but I've never seen them referred to as pumpkin headed fire monsters) -
Quote:Define "full product" in an MMO which gets updated every 3-6 months? My question is: why? Why not just package it together in one retail expansion and let players enjoy? The way its all piecemealed out now, players might as well wait until 4th quarter to get Going Rogue and enjoy it all in one go rather then buying in now and waiting 9 months to get the full product?
City of Heroes and City of Villains both waited until the next issue to release their End Games.* -
Hmmm. Cheers folks. The point about needing to slot for End with slots being so tight (seriously, it's like my Warshade all over again) going Fitness would probably be the better route alright. Don't want to be spending my precious slots on -End if I can help it.
Now how am I going to manage to squeeze it in?* -
Quote:If the transfer is temporary it doesn't matter as much. You could use various temporary renaming rules to allow for it (SCRA*).I also want to be able to team with others from different servers. Problem with server transfers is the name situation. My main toon (Quaver) plays on Defiant, but the other EU English-speaking server, Union, doesn't have this name available so I couldn't physically move over there without a forced name change. But I like the Defiant server! I just want to team with a wider variety of players.
For example if you are visiting Union and the account who owns Quaver isn't currently subscribed then you'd just use the name for Tells etc.*
If they are subscribed but that toon hasn't logged in in 90 days do the same.
* If they do exist and have recently logged in then stick @Defiant or something to your name temporarily to show you come from elsewhere and to avoid problems.
If you have the original name due to their inactivity but then by chance they do resubscribe & log in they they temporarily get @Union added to their name.
That'd be roughly (and from the top of my head) be the way I'd go about doing it anyway.
A server list merge would have to have a one-off and permanent Global Name merge though. But again I'd skew it towards those who are most active when it happens having the better chance of keeping the global name (rename both with a suffix and reserve the original global name for the first of them to request it). -
Quote:Having seen them in operation I'm actually against "Serverless" environments nowadays. A server or shard is a good way to foster a community and generate community spirit within that server IMO.Ok we've had it in blue and white (or whatever colour your forum theme is for these boards) from WW that there are no plans to merge the servers.
I figure it's about time to discuss the possible options available and maybe get a feel for player preferences - and maybe even turn up some unconsidered suggestions.
My own feeling is relatively simple: I would like to see more equality between the EU and NA servers, (ie only 2 English speaking servers available to me compared with plenty more on the other side of the pond.) I'd also like to see a LOT more traffic on my server.
Closing any server, whether dressed up as a merge, rationalization or for any other reason, is a bad thing politically. It would send entirely the wrong signals to the game players and the industry alike - not to mention hurt NCs share price I imagine. I also don't think it would actually address low population numbers - many of those playing casually on an affected server I'm sure would say "bugger it, I'm not playing this game any more" and cancelling their sub rather than moving. Many would stick with the game, I know - but the benefits of population wouldn't be widely noticed on remaining servers.
A "List Merge" - ie giving all players universal access to all servers - could also be problematic - but at least it would allow people to retain their home server. The down side is that the lower populated servers could end up entirely denuded of population as everyone flocks to a perceived more popular place. It could well be that one or two servers ended up lagging to hell and back while all the others languished, gathering dust.
There's also the possibility of a Guild Wars type system where you team across servers. I've not played GW in an age so I'm struggling to remember how it worked - but that could be a very popular solution: If I can play on Defiant and team with my buddies in Liberty, then it's all good - but I'm not going to pretend I know if it's achievable or not.
There's also a possible "server-less" environment. I guess that's doable if you just have a stack of slots and when you log in, you're in the same place as everyone else - and if that gets filled then a new instance opens up - like popular Hami raids and Mother Ship raids etc. Again, technically I'm not going to speculate if it's possible.
From my own perspective all I want is to team with my friends - many of whom play on servers I've got no access to, and to have a wider choice of people to play with. There's an American mechanics saying: "There's no substitute for cubes" - meaning that the size of an engine's cubic capacity is the most important thing when delivering performance. When it comes to this game, there's no substitute for bodies, that's what keeps everything alive. Good teams are what make the experience for me - and for most MMO players I imagine.
My preferred overall solution would be the twofold application of what you have above (Standard code rant applies everywhere, obviously)
1) A "travel to another dimension / shard" option or area probably somewhere fairly mid-level (so PI is out). Basically a temporary, in-game, free Server Transfer mechansim.
2) A merged Server list between the EU and US.*
1 is relatively easy to achieve, it's a tweaking of the Server Transfer system with some tweaking. 2 is less easy to say if it's possible. It's never been done in any shape or form as far as I know.* -
Hi folks,
*In my quest to get a domi going beyond the teens I've turned to Ice/Psi. It's been a bit of a struggle but finally went click yesterday when I DOed it up. I've made a Mids build (not available at the moment since I'm in work) and have a few questions.
1) Planning to avoid the Fitness Pool. With Drain Psi up at least 50% of the time I figured I don't need it at all. Instead I'm looking at Aid Other/Self for levelling and then Tough for stacking with a Patron shield. Good idea or silliness?
2) Patron Power pool. Normally I'd say Dark without hesitation, Soul Drain & Psi Shockwave and Psi Scream and the Patron AOE seems like an amazing combo. But Mu Mastery looks like it could suit him even better. A very good Resistance shield, an excellent AOE and then a God Mode whose crash can be overcome by Drain Psi. Plus a pet with a heal. Have people tried this (I assume they have), did it work well or did the Doms relatively low HP total mean that even with the stacked Resistances and massive Regen they were still a bit squishy?
3) How is Jacks AI at the moment? Fly Trap is really annoying me with its cowardliness, does Jack still suffer from the same reluctance to get in close and use his big hitters? If so should I just plan to include Recall Friend into the build to corral him?
4) Set bonuses. I know people usually say "Recharge, recharge, recharge" but those sets are expensive. Would it be worth aiming for +HP, +End and +Recovery bonuses instead to give extra ooomph to his defenses? The build I made had +25% HP, have others tried this approach with their Dom and how did you get on (no idea of the costs mind so could still be a non-runner for me).
I've also found myself being a bit bossy on teams and asking non-plant & non-Grav doms to try to avoid using Cages on Ice Patch. (Gravs don't matter and Plants can't really help it since so many of their pets have -knockback patches). What's the best way people have of broaching the subject?

Excellent, detailed guide, good work.
Quote:Fly Trap is better in melee, provided you can help keep it alive. The Bite does decent damage and it will still use it's ranged attacks too. But the bugger is generally allergic to going into melee range, he seems to prefer attacking from as far away as possible and attacks the enemy closest to it (which means it's Cone attack is being fired from so far away most of the spawn is out of it's range).Plant Control: I'm still not sure whether I think Giant Fly Trap is better melee or ranged. The rest of the set is predominantly ranged, though Seeds of Confusion, a critical power, is a Cone (and so requires fairly close positioning).
In terms of inexperienced teams I've found Plant very good because the Confuse & Roots combo means the spawn will basically help the team defeat it, and confuse works fairly well with other control powers (even Sleeps I think). Sets which I think suffer most on inexperienced or reckless teams are ones whose control can be hampered by their teamies : Ice and Earth (but Earth has lots of other options) because the knockdown patches can be nullified by most AOE immobs (and a lot of the time the aggro will either go to them or you, especially in the teens) and to a lesser extent Mind because it has a fair few sleeps and Fears and a strange secondary AOE Hold which makes things fly away. -
Quote:Indeed, but there's lots of fun to be had going to meetings with a Sales person, so long as you get botox or something to stop the involuntary facial grimaces every time they lie to the customer. It does tend to be a short-lived phase since once the Sales Guy figures you're only going to ridicule the customers silly ideas and blockade anything you don't like the sound of they stop inviting you.Hey, now. I certainly hate Marketing. Not as much as I hate Sales, though. *hiss, spit* For a software developer, they're the enemy.
Also there is the danger of drowning in a sea of acronyms and pointless, rambling chit-chat.
Win! -
Don't we have these already? I believe they're called Kheldians?
I know it's a slightly snarky answer but it is true. A Warshade (I've only played a WS) can flit between being a controllerish blapper, a scrappy tank and a nasty floaty Blaster (with ridiculous resistances) in seconds. -
Quote:Roll a Dominator so.*I'm thinking I want to make one that is /pain, but I don't want to be doing the same thing as everyone else.
My plan is to roll a Widow -> Fort when the level requirements get a drop. Seems like a good complimentary set to go with demons (or I might just stick with my Ice/Psi Dom). Worked really well for me when Dual Pistols came out.
Quote:...
Demons/Storm might be interesting, because you have Hurricane in that set to massively debuff enemies' attack bonus at melee range (and the whips are basically melee range attacks), but it seems like a waste to have so many pets that need re-summoning. (Tornado, Lightning Storm, then Hell on Earth) ...... or..... actually that might be the strongest combination come to think of it............
