Quote:Carnifax: I was looking at the parallel here of people being pointlessly protective about a closed off virtual world on a computer "nation" when everyone would be far better off playing together to real nationalism versus people just ignoring emotional tribal boundaries. It's human nature to form cliques and tribes (look at the mass racial/identity politics being used by people like the SNP, BNP, Sinn Fein, Plaid Cymru..) but it's so much better when people are actually able to rise above reactionary instincts and work together...
Fury: Calm down, silly as that sounds.
Oh right I see...
Well no I don't really. People were saying "Being merged with Virtue is a horrible idea" (that's what the 3 people in question were agreeing about). I'm not sure what's nationalist about that? People (including me) think it's a ridiculous idea, not because of some sense of nationalism, just because server merges are a bad idea in general, and us being merged with what is already the highest population server is a bad idea from NCSofts point of view as it just aggravates the situation with regards to other low population servers. -
Claws/Elec is solid and looks great.
Varied attacks, decent resistances, a fairly good self-heal nowadays and excellent End consumption and recovery abilities.
You'll make Carnies cry and laugh at Sappers, Rikti and Crey Power Tanks. -
Quote:Tell the CoH developers that... That's an ingame issue once you launch the Updater. This looks to be the problem - that last slash should be a backslash \ not a forward slash /
It's not the problem here though, the main problem is that CoH installation is a big mess and doesn't play nicely with the UAC. -
Quote:I tried what you said, but now I am getting an error that states:
"Error opening file C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes/CohUpdater.exe
You may be out of disk space or you may be trying to install to a location where you have insufficient permissions"
Sigh...another issue...
I ran into this as well. The UAC is playing silly buggers with CoH (something the developers should really sort, any other game I play doesn't have this trouble).
Try moving the install folder from it's current location to c:\City of Heroes\
Update the shortcut on the desktop to point at the new location and try it again. -
Quote:* The synaptic package manager is basically a GUI for apt-getAlready went back to xp before you posted back
sorry.
Strange thing though, since i reinstalled XP I installed my drivers and everything like before, however now i have better graphics and less lag in CoH, although I do still get the crashes on using anything requiring a photo of the charecter (tailor, name entry screen, contacts etc)
Less lag I could put down to less fragmented hard drives etc since its a clean formatted disk but the graphics? I used the same drivers as before as well which is why I cant explain it.
I may try try linux again in the future but I think its simply too complicated for me atm, everything depends on how many commands you know and a lot of them arent guessable in any way whatsoever.
For instance to download a package its 'apt-get' unless I read that elsewhere I wouldnt have guessed that in a million years lol plus I wasnt happy about how a driver that linux tells you to download can make your entire screen disappear. It maybe free but its also not very functional unless you have experience with it and i dont.
Thank you for all the advice though guys. Like I said I may have another go at some time in the future on a seperate pc just to tinker around with it.
I agree with you though, Linux may be great for some things (I can't do development work in Windows, it's too annoying) but it's not user friendly, especially not for first-timers. Mint is the closest I've come to being the best out of the box solution for my laptop, but if I'd run into the same problems as you did I'd have the same attitude to it. I wouldn't dream of bothering with running games on it either to be honest.
Windows 7 on the other hand I have to give kudos to, easiest install I've ever done, it even let me partition properly. Follow up with ninite.com to automatically install my essentials and it was a breeze. -
Quote:Really? Christ, I'm in the wrong line of work. Hell, I would be in the long line of work even if I'd gotten into the military - I'd have only been looking at around twenty-six grand after about eight years.
Venom retracted if the gaming industry really is that profitable.
Gaming might be less, since it's seen as a cool job as well which everyone would like to get into. -

Quote:No, we don't. Posi answered that in the Q&A, for the moment Praetoria will have content up to 20, and then some stuff for the Incarnate system at 50.The devs told 1-20 is new and starting content in GR. And after 20 you are able to switch sides. BUT... has it occured to anyone that they are not speaking of content beyond lvl 20 in the Praetoria world?!
It might well be there as there is high level Praetoria stuff planned. There might as well be the same amound of content as City of Villains. We presume too much!
20-50 content is not coming with GR.
I am sorta expected they'll add new Praetoria content in following-on issues. -
Quote:Except of course that Rabbit and the others come from different countries. I'm from a different country to those 3 as well, and I'm currently playing US side and I still think it's a hideously horrible idea.Yeah, it's interesting how it reflects the small-mindedness of nationalism
Your comment makes no sense. Which could be why there's a smiley attached I guess.* -
Quote:The two clients are identical, so just install the EU version and change it manually.Ok, I have tried NCSoft's website, the City of Heroes website, and even the link in this forum to the EU downloader (which worked but only gave me the EU client). Where can I find an actual working US client download? All I seem to get is an empty file that is about 300 kbs when I download.
Please help, I am getting to a very frustrated point now.
To make the EU client connect to the US servers :
1) Go to the folder you installed City of heroes in (usually c:\Program Files\City of Heroes)
2) Hold down Control and click and drag the CohUpdater.eu.exe file to make a copy of it.*
3) Rename the copy CoHUpdater.exe
4) Make a Desktop shortcut; Right-click and drag that CoHUpdater.exe file to the desktop, then release. A wee menu should pop-up asking if you want to Move, Copy or Create a Shortcut. Pick "Create a shortcut"
5) Rename the Shortcut to City of Heroes or City of Heroes US or whatever you like and double click it to start. -
Quote:Looking at Illusion from a design perspective, what I stated is what holds up. The gameplay of the hard control sets suits the fast paced Assault play of the Dominator archtype... which is the design goal. Dominators should not play like Controllers.
One of my biggest personal issues with the cries of proliferate that set, or that set, or that set is that the uniqueness of each set is lost. The different play experience becomes meaningless, or harder to differentiate. Right off hand, unless somebody can make a convincing argument for how Illusion Control would suit the Dominator play-experience goal, there's no reason to proliferate it.
My Ice/Psi Dom strongly disagrees with the concept that Domis are suited to Hard Control systems. That's a generalization which doesn't particularly bear up IMO. And Earth Domis show that a pseudo-pet heavy Control set can still work well with Domination.
* I haven't seen any real reason that Illusion should not be proliferated to Dominators, the only one I can think of off-hand is that both Domination and Illusion benefit greatly from +Recharge bonuses and that might create an edge-case IO'd monster. -
Quote:For some reason people are sending me PMs on the boards or global messages ingame instead of posting here about the Perl script. People, I'll see the complaints here faster :P
So far people seem to have trouble getting the script to recognize IE's cookies. This can be caused by two things:
1) You need to select "Remember me" when logging in. No cookies are created if you don't tell the site to remember you.
2) IE has to write the cookies to the harddisk before the script can read them. Usually just closing IE will do that. But if you're using a program that has an embedded browser, that might not be enough because "some kind of IE" is still open. If you can't figure out which program it is, restarting the computer will take care of that.
Aaah, 1 explains why it wasn't working for me. Silly Carni. On 2 things like Steam (maybe, they upgraded recently and I think removed the IE Browser component from the store) and CoH loading screen are potential culprits.
I looked at the source to have a look, never coded PERL at all. It seems very, very powerful in terms of the libraries and functions you use -
Quote:Oh god no. That's the last thing Demon MMs need, pets taking up even more space and clutter.I pictured/predicted the Demon Prince looking not-too-unlike the large behemoth COT demons. It is hard to discern him (at a glance) vs the other MM tier 3 pets
You've got a Pet Window, use that if you need to select him or use a bind/macro.
Look at The Dirty Nightdress if you want to see a really unimposing Tier 3... -
Quote:My Necro/Dark was more reliably hard to kill than any controller I've played (including my Illusion/Storm). Vs tough EBs my Illusion/Storm would be fine for 60 seconds until PAs dropped and then was in bother. My Necro/Dark never came across an EB he couldn't take down.I have no interest in educating those that are unable to educate themselves. How bout you name a build that you think is the best at something and I'll make you a controller build that will beat it. Feel free to also remember the specificness to which I said the claim about controllers.
This is talking about mainly SO only builds mind, not IOed up to the gills (where something like a perma-PA Illusion/Rad is a monster vs EBs or other hard targets). In terms of SO only builds while levelling I'd rank MMs and Brutes ahead of controllers generally. MMs are probably the "best" in terms of giving excellent performance with little investment needed.
If you're talking about "potentially the best given infinite resources" then a IO'd up Controller build will probably beat any other comparable IO'd up build. However I wouldn't consider such an edge case to be the norm (nor would the game developers I think), and therefore wouldn't consider Controllers the "best" AT. I'd give that accolade to Masterminds, and even then it's a nebulous term. -
Quote:But doesn't Control+2 jump to Tray 2 etc?Pffft.
You think Pinnaclites are such lightweights that drinking impairs our ability to play?
Maybe on one of them foofoo Boone's Farm servers you'll have that happen, but not here!
On the OP: I skipped that problem entirely. I use the number keys to activate my powers. 1-0 is tray 1, Alt+1-0 is tray 2. I keep powers I seldom use in tray 3 where I'm unlikely to hit them by accident, I click those manually, since they are all powers that my survival does not depend on (various teleport powers, Rest, etc.)
That's one way I always manage it (along with hitting the Windows key. Stupid thing) -
Quote:
On a serious note, it would be really cool if the French server was set around Paris, German around Berlin, and the English ones around London.
If they are cooking CoH2 in their back labs, I hope they are considering different locales on servers.
London? The most unfriendly city in Europe? Eew.*
(It's true. London is weird. No-one talks to each other, sorta like WoW but with slightly fewer people wanting to duel you) -
Quote:Serverless system? The only thing I ever saw the devs say about a serverless system was that if this game were ever to implement one that they wouldn't be refunding any money for server transfers.
Weirdly I'm of the opinion that a truly serverless system is rather intimidating and unfriendly and doesn't help in terms of fostering a community spirit.*
I much prefer the concept of server set-ups but allowing people to jump between servers easily. In CoH terms I'd implement it as a Portal Corp portal which transfers you to a parallel reality for a brief time, equal to a play-session or when you come back manually. -
Quote:Agree with others IOs are good stuff.
Example:
I locked a toon [foolishly thinking that I could make cash off the very low supply recipe drops] and IOed her out at 25. Nothing higher than 28 and on missions she was a god compared to the SOed, or perhaps DOed toons.
Global Recharge? Yeah, you can feel it. Enhancing Damage AND Accuracy AND Rech into the 90s or 80s? FTW, man, FTW. You can't do that with SOs til the 40s.
Frankenslotting is cheaper than SOs and better for numbers. Sets give bonuses, great ones at times. A toon without IOs is crippled, but can still get to 50 if they are on good teams.
A character without IOs is certainly not crippled. And they certainly don't need "good teams" to get them to 50. IOs are better than SOs, sure. But SO only is nowhere near crippled. -
Quote:Thats the sign of a good night out
If you haven't got to phone up people to apologise or you wake up in a familiar place then it's a quiet night.
Of course if you wake up in a police cell covered in bruises then you've had too much of a good time
Or wake-up in a cell which DOESN'T belong to the police...
That's generally uh-oh time -
Quote:You can't negate the crash to 0*, but you can have enough recovery where the -recovery debuff is overcome so you don't remain flatlined.
The nuke should hit you with -16.7 end/sec and we recover 1.67 base so we need to overcome 15.03 negative end/sec. So if you hit 8 targets with:
unslotted DP = 10.02 eps recovery
1 end mod IO = 14.27 eps (this + stamina will let you start recovering, but quite slowly)
2 end mod IO = 18.37 eps (this should keep you trucking along nicely)
The aoe isn't that big though so hitting 8 can be a bit tough. 7 will let you recover through it, but 6 hit (with 2 end IO's) probably won't. Or at least not much. It is a good idea to switch buff display to numeric stacking (if it isn't already) so you know how many you have actually hit and whether you'll need further blue assistance.
*You can occasionally not crash to zero if perf shifter procs at precisely the right time. Pretty rare though
How high could you slot your End with Accolades and IO bonuses? If you could get it over 121 (and be full at the time you trigger it) you might be able to overcome the End Cost and -100. -
Quote:You all drink wierd drinks to be honest
Average night out in town, the drinks that are on the possibility are!
Magners £3ish
Budweiser £2:50ish
VK Blue £2 ish
Aftershocks £2 ish
Flamin Sambuca £3 ish
Purple Rain £7ish
Jack Daniels + coke £3:50 ish
VK blue, Flaming Sambuca and something named after a Prince song and you call OUR drinks weird?? -
Quote:Heh vodka I can handle, can drink it to the cows come home, never gets me that drunk or makes me ill. My favorite is Vodka and Applejuice, there's one place here in Croydon that serves it, all the rest just give you odd looks.
Now Whiskey, whiskey is a different matter...after binging on it (a very large bottle of bells whiskey to myself without mixer and chugged down in about half an hour) I can't stand the smell of the stuff, it makes me sick to my stomach if I drink it and for the next day or so I will be able to taste it.
Now if you want proper gut wrenching, clear out the stomach, drink I recommend The viking.
It's a drink of my own concoction, it's two shots of afterhshock blue (represents the sea) and, if you bar serves them, a vodka badjelly floating ontop of it (the viking longboat).
Three or four is usually enough for the stomach...
Why would you drink Vodka if it doesn't make you drunk. Vodka is great, gets me happy-drunk and dancey (although I'm dancey anyway).
Whiskey can make me grouchy and mildly stroppy, so I tend to avoid it nowadays, even though I love Jameson. I've found Captain Morgans rum a good substitute which avoids the stroppyness though.
I will also accept Long Island Ice Teas or Mojotos. -
Quote:This is how i've found it mostly too, ((everyone talking like this)) in broadcast and occasionally in teams, but for the most part i rarely come across anyone roleplaying at all, and if i do then it tends to be nothing more than speech binds set up on certain powers.
The thread certainly took a different direction than i had intended that's for sure. Rather than finding folks on the US servers from the EU to get with i find myself reading a debate about whether servers should be merged or not. Some things never change
I did find out that there's a sizable EU contingent on Victory though, so my next alt will be there I think. That'll give me a good spread of PuG teaming and some of the "team with regulars" stuff I miss from the EU. -
Quote:I recommend earth/fire or plant/fire. Fire assault does a lot more damage than any of the other secondaries. Unfortunately no doms are AOE beasts anymore, but firebreath+combustion does by quite a bit more damage than the next best aoe combo of psyscream+PSW. Especially with FE being up so often.
Earth offers a ton of control and can neutralize huge spawns without issue. Heck it can handle a couple full sized spawns at once. One of the staple powers Earthquake is functionally the same as Iceslick, just better as it lowers def and debuffs their tohit as well.
Plant while primarily playing around a single strength is very good at that strength. Seeds of Confusion is amazing control and /fire adds the aoe and st damage to quickly vaporize the confused group.
I've got an earth/fire perma dom and it has sort of ruined other doms for me because /fire is by far the best damage choice and earth is really really good.
Weirdly I couldn't get into my Earth/Fire at all. Dunno why, he was certainly less annoying than my Ice/Psi in the teens, but he's stuck at 19 while I'm still playing my Ice/Psi. One factor may be that I was playing the Earth/Fire in the pre-i17 lull but my Ice/Psi is reaping the current influx of Demon and SoA teams running about. I think my love of AOE Drain style powers might also be a factor.
Having played the sets separately I'd say Plant/Fire is a beast of a build, probably as much AOE carnage as a Domi is able to muster. Crappy pet though (oh Audrey 2, why can't you be a bit cleverer?) but Seeds and Carrion Creepers are brill and the AOE immob does twice the damage of the other sets.
