I'm with the Ninja on this one. Why the hell would I want to make myself? Far more interesting using my imagination to come up with something different.

We will be giving you updates on this migration throughout the process so be sure to check out the CoH_OCR twitter page regularly!

Not a tweet about preparation for the merge though...

I'd rather go with Smurf's gone pink!
Seems to be the correct description anyway!

That sounds like some X-rated adult remake designed to scar ones childhood.

Smurfette's Pink then?

But it would be loads fo extra work for them to copy over every single thread - like there are several GR threads on both sides, with lots of posts covering the same stuff.
[/ QUOTE ]
Just because two threads have the same title doesn't mean they'll have the same content. I mean look at your own ability to send a thread gliding off topic (like now for example)
There'll be lots of 2 threads for a few weeks and then everything will settle as they float off the first page and all will be well.
Yes, I'm being hopelessly optimistic, for a change -
[ QUOTE ]
I think that was a key point you just made. Hazard zones have been made over into other kinds of zones, and no new ones added in their place. MA gives you the old style spawn sizes
[/ QUOTE ]
And darn fun they can be too.
I'm happy to join any team that's doing missions Red Side, got some decent PuGs over the weeks, ranging from Duos to full teams doing Malta. But if there's none going then I go and solo my chosen Shake and Bake farm mission on my Brute instead. Dealing with masses of enemies is much more fun than 2 or 3 at a go.
Plus its letting me IO up easier than with normal content. For one thing I can avoid the stupid Black Market interface more and just get my Salvage from Random Rolls or just purchasing them with tickets. -

Giving you all a healthy does of optimistic cynicism:
The EU Roleplay and Creative boards will be decimated in the transfer, possibly along with comics and culture.
More of the US posts will survive than EU posts (as a
percentage)
Any loss of EU posts will be passed off as unrecoverable due to transfer tech error. Likely that they just weren't transfered.
Prepare for the worst, if better comes then be plesantly surprised! Protect and Survive!
[/ QUOTE ]
Why would there be an EU roleplaying section at all? Or a Creative. You can start EU specific threads in the relevant new Roleplaying section can't you?
[/ QUOTE ]
To Clarify:
EU Boards - Current
US Boards - Current
Global Boards - After Merge
The cynical side of me feels that a large amount of content from the current EU boards won't make it over to the Global Boards, while the US content will.
So our NaNoWriMo/DraMo threads, the various major RP threads and so forth.
[/ QUOTE ]
Oh the content? Soz, yep I agree. It bloody well better.
(or else I'll be miffed and will moan a bit) -
[ QUOTE ]
I'd feel pretty gutted personally if we lost any of the compilation threads on popular subjects we've been building as a community.
[/ QUOTE ]
Ack, the "What have you been Reading" thread!!
*runs off to the Comics Section to try and trick the system* -

Aside from the fact that I disapprove of the thread title they're carrying (I most certainly am not a Brit!)
[/ QUOTE ]
IIRC It's a reference to the popular image of Paul Revere at the start of the American War of Independence (from Britain) who rode to towns/villages warning them that the British are coming!
So I guess it's a warning/rallying cry to prepare to fight us for US independence... time to don a redcoat and check my powder's dry, I guess
[/ QUOTE ]
And I'm heading over in a coffin ship in the Steerage section, listening to fiddle music and doing that dance where the top half of my body seems inert but the bottom half appears to be dancing on hot coals.
Diddly-aye-do-de-do...
(sadly I do actually know how to Irish Dance, having had it bet into me by a Christian Brother when off at the Gaeltacht summer school in the late 80s. Maybe that was a precursor to my love of raves in the 90s. "Finally, I'm allowed to use my arms") -

[/ QUOTE ]
I'm looking forward to spanking and being spanked (ooh matron).
I am looking forward to more active AT forums.
And from the US sides "The Brits are coming" (we'll educate them on what EU actually means when we get there)

Oh. Cool, I guess. I keep hearing good things about the EU boards, so maybe some of that will spill over to these boards and replace the doom and gloom that always comes with any new Issue.

I gained a +1 to my soon-to-be-deceased postcount. Plus it passes the time on my last day before hols since I'm not allowed to do any actual work in case I break something.
[/ QUOTE ]
But...
If you can't do any work today (in case you break something before your hols) did you manage to not do any work yesterday (in case you broke something before today when you can't do any work (in case you break something before your hols))?
And if that's the case:
Did you manage to not do any work on Friday in case..?
[/ QUOTE ]
Friday I had to do work to fix something I broke on Thursday, unfortunately. My plan was to do little, but I didn't get away with it.
In future I'll know not to do anything the day before the day before the day before my hols either. Lesson learned

Whenever we have to do something along these lines at work, we take copies of all the DB's and run several tests, fine tuning the scripts on the copies until we KNOW it's working right. Then when it's time to do it live, the whole process is done in under an hour (and I assure you, our client's live databases are waaaaaaaaay bigger than these forum ones...)
[/ QUOTE ]
Aye, but probably so are the dbservers they're served on
And the forums are mainly text based so you've to regenerate full text indexes on everything which can take a while, especially on a slower machine running MySQL.

Or [*] Effective merging of 2 reasonably large databases with re-assignment/re-mapping of key data (I'd guess at least user, post and PM IDs)[*] multiple backups for that little bit of extra defence against Mr [censored]-up[*] Testing/Verification[*] a little contingency time built in
Not exactly a business-critical change either - so no need to have people working 24hrs a day on it...
I wouldn't say 3 days was a particularly long time for it.
Look at it this way: Would 1 day be reasonable if it was just migrating EU boards to new software? If so then imagine that they've got 1 day for EU, 1 day for US and 1 day to sort out conflicts/clashes and test/check the merge.
Yeah it won't be quite split like that - but just showing that 3 days isn't unreasonable.
[/ QUOTE ]
Pffft, you and your "facts" JD. This is the internet. Everyone knows that anything one doesn't know how to do is therefore really easy and takes seconds to do (although upgrading web applications is one of the few things I do know how to do).
I assume they also have to change database layouts as well as just merging, I can't imagine the two BB apps use the same db schema. -

Indeed. To "copy" all the mails they must be typing them out by hand again
Still, I'm off to be wed from today (or to run around like a headless chicken trying to organise everything) so good timing as far as I'm concerned.
So Avatea does the last person to post a mail in the old boards win a prize? -

Wow the tension is palpable. I'm sorry if some think we were partying all weekend, this is certainly a lie. We are all on our knees trying to make sure we don't pass out today.
As announced previously, you will not be able to change your forum handle on the vBulletin. However we will be able to deal with forum handle conflicts. But again, before we are able to tell you more about that, we need to make sure that the vBulletin forums are working all right. Just know that we are aware that this will happen and that we have a plan to address that issue.
I understand that it is probably a stressful time for a lot of you. Not only is your usual forum environment going to change drastically, but the English-speaking community is going to increase manifolds.
At this point there probably isn't much I can say and am able to say to alleviate your concerns but I'm pretty sure you'll find your new forums a lot friendlier and comfortable than these ones.

Good enough for me, ta for the update Av.
Good luck with the update, I know how nerve racking updating & moving an entire userbase can be.
I'm looking forward to going to the Americans. -

Ooh, blasphamy. I didn't even notice him gone.
Certainly not worth taking the Leadership Pool over Spooky (Flash maybe, Spectral Terror, no way. Second best power in the set). -

WoW has been polished till it gleams.
[/ QUOTE ]
Which I guess kinda shows that old saying can't be true all the time.
[/ QUOTE ]
What, doing something completely and well pays dividends and lets you rule the world?
I don't like the gameplay of WoW but at least they polish things properly and don't release a feature half-done to finish off later (unlike issues 13, 14, 15 and what looks like 16). -
Remove the Recharge from Phantasm, he doesn't need it, he's perma out of the box. 2 acc, 3 dam is good for him.
PAs I have 1 acc, 2 dam, 3 recharge. You want them out as much as possible.
I'd also drop Assault, you're a Kinetics. Once you have Fulcrum Shift you don't need assault. Hasten is far nicer IMO.
I've also always taken Siphon Power as well, it's handy when you're soloing and won't hit the cap with Fulc Shift. I'm not a big fan of the Leadership Pool in general, especially with Illusion as you can't buff the PAs. -

You do know that Avatea I think has more or less warned anyone that mentioning the the flowing strands of kerotine is more or less hazardous these days?
[/ QUOTE ]
So if we write a big long request for it in Suggestions, throw in a few flamewars and a mass of one-line posts and counter posts, then click Notify Moderator on every post in the thread then, after all that, Av might pop here and actually tell us what we're supposed to do about potential name clashes?
Worth a shot I suppose. Nothing else seems to work. -

well, happily that's about to become a non-issue.
[/ QUOTE ]
Probably the best thing about a forum merge. A single, central place for the Dev's to post for everyone.
[/ QUOTE ]
^This.
Though I do have some concerns about timing. The support on the EU forums recently has gone heaywire mostly because Avatea simply isn't at work when most of us do our posting (during working hours in the EU). The 8 hour time difference is quite telling. As long as some care is taken to ensure that posts made by us lot over here aren't lost in an early-morning flurry of posts by them lot over there, then this should be pretty awesome.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm looking forward to that actually. We'll be the "night people", then the Americans can argue over our posts once we've all gone home for the day, then, once they're all in bed we can counter-argue with them again.
The boards will work on a Shifts system (except for GG, who doesn't seem to sleep). -
So over the weekend I got Burn on my Stone/Fire and it's great, especially combined with 2 AOE knockdowns.
However I noticed that when my Fury is high the damage starts off high but then ramps down during the duration. The "Rain of 11s" start falling until eventually they become a "Rain of 5s".
Is this expected behaviour because Burn inherits the Fury damage buff but it expires during Burns 10 second lifetime? How long does Furys Damage Buff last? -
[ QUOTE ]
Hmmm, Power Boost. Not sure it needs that, some endurance recovery power is more likely to be needed here. Stone attacks tend to be endurance heavy, and Mud Pots isn't going to be cheap to run.
[/ QUOTE ]
God yeah, if it's as bad as Stone Melee on a Brute it's going to be murder on End for a Domi (who are a bit tight End-wise anyway).
Looks like I need to get both a Forced Feedback AND a Performance Shifter onto my Brute before the Earth Assault Doms get here.
The recharge times probably aren't that bad simply because Domi's have at least 2 other powers from their Primary they can use as fillers in between.
