Quote:Never going to happen. NCSoft has already said what they had to say. If you hear anything good, it will be from former devs or a new publisher or studio that takes over. And even then, you might not hear anything any time soon.I rather have the news directly. As they say direct from the horses mouth?
If that sounds overly negative for me, it's because I feel exceedingly overly negative about any discussion right now that isn't based loosely around the old phrase, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Just replace country with community and you get my drift.
If you haven't done all the things the Titan Network has pleaded with us to do, then you shouldn't be nitpicking peoples efforts who are doing something about this, and you shouldn't nitpick NCSoft for ignoring our pleas for information if you won't even respond to your own community's pleas for assistance. And I know at least one of the nitpickers in this thread hasn't sent in their mask and cape yet.
And, Brillig, I wasn't being sarcastic. -
Quote:I think you're wanting to misunderstand this, and you're overcomplicating the way news spreads. For one thing, you don't even know whether former Paragon employees are allowed by contract to talk to each other about these matters. For another thing, some former employees who know ML can be trusted have thrown that hint our way, because it's all they can give us without doing something really stupid. Some of us are taking it with smiles. Some of us are throwing it back in ML's face.doesn't it strike you as odd that people who've been working together for years are suddenly not speaking to each other?
For your case, what you and some others here SHOULD be doing is tracking down any redname who has given ML a good word on this forum or the Titan Network, and dressing them down for not giving you news directly right now. That might sound silly, but it's a helluva lot more sporting than trashing the messenger in a public forum that she can and does read.
Lastly, NCSoft doesn't care that you're impatient for news. For their part, they would never care whether you ever knew the specifics of these circumstances. The people who we will have to thank for any good news are the people fighting for our cause. -
Ending the game like the heroes started it--kicking some Rikti butt outta our dimension.
And I agree about a TonyV statue, but I think he should be holding a torch instead. -
-
Quote:Brillig? Did you even read the posts above? I already repl--So you're willing to follow people with the "Authority" label even when what they say contradicts established facts.
Oh well, so is most of the rest of the world.
You know what, nevermind. This discussion is about as useful as a playground argument. Nothing we're posting here will cause any action, and everything we're posting here will get nuked along with the forums, and long before that, it will scroll off the front page in short order, to be replaced by more nitpicking and axe-grinding.
Please just go to www.SaveCoH.com, write letters, send masks and capes, writes posts on other forums, write open letters to NCSoft in comment sections beneath articles covering SaveCoH on gaming and other news sites.
Stop wasting precious energy arguing about whether someone else out there--who is trying to do something about all of this--is good enough for your trust, whoever you may be. Your opinion about Mercedes Lackey is non-essential and posting about it won't make NCSoft pipe up and give you their take. And trust me (or don't), the faster you get NCSoft's take on all of this, the worse it will be. They can't make announcements while specifics are still being negotiated. They can only speak publicly to the gaming media after every dotted line has been signed. -
-
Positron and Zwillinger also have posts out there making cautionary statements about how soon the forums might go down (and I'm not going to go hunt those statements down because winning an Internet argument doesn't pay me any money whatsoever). Which really means that no one knew (or knows) what NCSoft would (or will) do next.
HEY, SURPRISE, PEOPLE!!! NCSOFT IS UNPREDICTABLE AND UNCOMMUNICATIVE!!!
Mercedes Lackey is a best-selling author who has marshaled her professional capital and business savvy as a resource to gain NCSoft's attention. It worked at least to the extent that people involved with the negotiations are still communicating with her.
I don't know her and I'm not her internet body guard; but early on I made a personal decision to do my meager part to spread news and help keep people motivated here on the main forums. I'm just one of a gazillion posters who are out to do the same, but many others are spending more time on the Titan Network now (can't blame them).
I don't want to sound offensive either, but I'll admit, I find it mildly irritating that people who have actually been around here the last three weeks are just now asking "who is this person?" I've also seen people ask who Brian Clayton is and I find it hard to believe that anyone who's actually been paying attention and/or keeping up with the real SaveCoH movement would be asking these questions now, this far into things. -
I don't think them saying "hat" was a mistake at all.
-
They can't, unless they want to kiss all future employment opportunities in this industry goodbye. The fact is, devs THEMSELVES have pointed to Mercedes as the next best thing and the ONLY thing we've got in the way of news.
When things get tough you work with what you've got and hopefully learn to be grateful for it. And I'm grateful for Mercedes Lackey.
Lackey has also openly, publicly made statements about how devastating this has been for her and how her involvement has created more stress for her, not less; and yet she has continued to stay involved and go to bat for us. I don't personally know Mrs. Lackey, but when I see people slamming her for CONTINUING to do what other people in her shoes may have quit doing by now (feeding news to an ungrateful audience despite having Paragon's trust), it only makes me respect her more and more.
At least she has plenty of support on the Titan forums, where people are apparently not living under a rock for the past three weeks. -
-
FPAEK!
Seriously though, YES. THIS.
I've been sort of selfishly playing on hidey-hole /hideall mode for the past week or so, because I love playing the game but couldn't get far enough away from all the negative discussions and friends egging me on to go join them in other games (though, oddly enough, it's allowed me to get to know some new friends who I ran into between missions, because I was able to give them my undivided attention).
Tomorrow I'll /unhideall and if anyone wants to just play some missions and have some fun and ditch the moping, I'm @Captain-Electric, at your service.
Edit: On virtue.
Yes I'm an "RPer" but since I pretty much just act like myself anyway, a goofball, it's not really much of a distinction. -

Leandro, he's with the Titan Network now and a long-time trusted member of this community. Also in that same thread I just started trying to talk him into making it where we can see those slogans an the billboards within the game.
He said it might be possible and he'll look into it after some sleep. -
Quote:Mine is the "readability" version.

Hey Leandro could you make it so when we log in we see these slogans all over the game's various billboards? Would be great for pics.
-
Also you could be seeing protest signs with those words all over the game if you downloaded a few tiny files:

As someone who loves to support a game he loves, I have mixed feelings about a question like this. To qualify what I'm about to say, I do think $500 is a fair price for a lifetime sub. Lifetime subs for other MMOs generally shoot below this mark and probably shoot themselves in their feet by doing so. A $1,000 price tag would probably net a studio far more bad press than it would money.
But when I typed "fair price" above, I was speaking from a customer's perspective--or at least many customers. I don't think it's fair to a publisher or studio. It's a steal, and that's what's wrong with it to me personally. If I paid that $500 fee, then after I had essentially "used up the time" that $500 would have paid for, I'd have no option besides market purchases if I wanted to continue to support the game.
In City of Heroes, I was paying about $30 to $40 monthly to play (VIP subscription, one extra token, and various market purchases). But that was also because I was a (almost) three-year veteran trying to buy my way quickly to tier 9 (which I finally did, one week before the bad news broke). After that, my funding of City of Heroes would have been cut down to half of what I had been paying since Freedom launched (accounting for the 550 Paragon Points I'm now getting as a higher tier). I have built a very diverse roster of heroes that I love to play, and have increasingly focused on developing them rather than purchasing new power sets and whole costume bundles for new characters.
See what I'm getting at here? The first time a month went by where I didn't have to pay anything at all to support City of Heroes, I wouldn't feel good about it at all. Because I know full well that lifetime subs are quick cash grabs that hurt studios in the long run.
Quote:You mean the campaign that you keep trash-talking and putting people down for in every thread? After reading your comments in this thread, I get that you're just as disappointed by this as the rest of us. I get it. But taking your anger and misdirecting it at the people who are trying to do something about it is just not right. If you truly want to live up to your forum name, think about this (<-- link).Doesn't really matter, now does it? The CoH campaign is breaking new ground in gamer activism. We're already far beyond unprecedented.
What we're doing here isn't anything different from what we've always done: demanding what we want as players and as customers. We're just doing it on a much larger (and crazier) scale--a scale that fits the circumstances. If what we're doing was that stupid, then we wouldn't have garnered all the media sympathy we've got. In case you didn't know or haven't been reading gaming news in the past 30 years, the gaming press LOVES to tell people when their ideas are stupid. Our idea isn't stupid. So stop knocking it and maybe think about making some noise alongside us.
You don't come off like an "angry citizen" at all. You just come off like an apathetic one. -
Quote:Normally I'd not dignify this with a response, but in this case--being the long-time lurker that I was and being familiar with your posts--I think you actually mean what you typed here. How many authors and other types of content developers would you imagine played, contributed to and loved City of Heroes/Villains over the years? I'd imagine a lot.Having your news depend on someone who's job it is to imagine fantastical stories doesn't strike me as the best idea.
Here's a tip: former Paragon Studios employees who are now directly out of the loop are eagerly watching Mercedes's posts for new information. The reason isn't because they've all suddenly turned stupid. Context clues, Johnny. Context.
So, do yourself a favor. Think about what you're typing before you type. Because you just managed to insult two broad groups of people (every professional writer, and every former staff member of Paragon Studios, including the Lead Producer who is still communicating with Mercedes and NCSoft) in one fell swoop.
Good job pissing all over your own respect and credibility, but I don't think that is what you were trying to accomplish here. -
Quote:I get my updates from Mercedes Lackey on the Titan Network forum.

Angry Citizen and American Knight may be right in a very plain sense. But that's no kind of sense that ever gets anything done when the odds are stacked against something you love--and that includes a community built around an eight year-long hobby. If City of Heroes is by some miracle saved, it won't be people like Angry Citizen and American Knight, and their very plain sense, who we thank afterward. We'll thank Tony and all the other crazy nuts out there who pushed for the impossible, like they could hold it in the palm of their hand if they just kept trying. We'll thank all the people who equated saving this community with heroism, and who couldn't be told otherwise.
We are heroes. This is what we do.
People who downplay this effort are the same people who'd downplay any effort that is important to you but not to them; they're the same anti-social cretins that want to watch you grieve after helping you lose hope. And a dressing-down from people like this should mean about as much to you as getting dressed down by a terrible two year-old. Shouldn't mean a thing. Heroism takes all forms, and it takes all kinds. This community means so much to so many people, and whoever helps save it, or fails trying their damnedest, is a hero.
So, you gave up on your message after having two of this forum's most negative ninnies wag their fingers in your face for sport? Ya'know, these types are always the fastest to pounce onto any positive message to sink their teeth into it, but so what? You can't be bothered to do the right thing because a couple clowns showed up who can't stand seeing anyone drink out of a half-full glass?
I sincerely hope you'll do yourself and your integrity a favor, and come back tomorrow, and let us hear your message loud and clear. Tell these clowns to shove it, or just ignore 'em, these are your forums too. -
I think this makes a thread bumping record for me for the past several years, but you know what?
For great justice, I'll take off every Zig and then some.
Read the OP. Stay in touch. The game and these forums are going away soon, but the heroes and villains of Paragon City aren't done yet.
Don't give NCSoft the last word. Keep an eye on the Titan Network. -
*Salutes*
Welcome aboard, Sammich. We could all use a hero sammich right about now, so you're just in time.
Just remember. It's not over till we say it's over. Me, you, and thousands of other heroes, vigilantes, rogues, and villains.
City of Heroes/Villains is ending November 30, and these forums will most likely end sooner. Talks between NCSoft and Paragon might not have saved us, we just don't know. But a good hero never quits, and for that matter, neither does a cunning villain. The community will live on, and one day, the spirit of City of Heroes/Villains will rise from Paragon's ashes. Keep on eye on the Titan Network. They have some plans over there, and I think those nuts are actually crazy enough to see them through. -
Yes, we really need to see continued rallies of support; but the problem with moving these efforts to the Beta Server is that it's the ONLY place where players can experience the game's newest features and play through Issue 24 content. I have a feeling that as the end draws near, more and more players will log onto the Beta Server to do just that. I know I'll be spending more time there.
Weirdly enough, the con to using the Beta Server may also be the pro: getting more players moved/copied onto the Beta Server will make teaming easier.
