That is a popular sentiment (it goes without saying), and partly true. Alan Moore wanted to use those existing characters. DC felt that was too risqué, which might be understandable, given the era (I think they should have taken those risks). WATCHMEN was the compromise for Moore. But maybe he saw it as an opportunity to create characters like Rorschach and Doctor Manhattan. I know I would have. The universe of WATCHMEN was a level deeper than DC's Batman, and I have always perceived Rorschach as the Crusader THAT universe deserved. (Most people say Owl Man, but I agree with them only partially.)

Batman is one of my all-time favorite characters (I don't have many big favorites), but he couldn't fill Rorschach's shoes. I don't mean that in the BATMAN VS RORSCHACH sense. I mean that Batman would (and has) compromised in situations that Rorschach would not have. They are, perhaps, dimensional counterparts; but a few divergences have created a wide gap.

This is misguided arrogance. Fans waited for 20 years to see THE WATCHMEN, not some ambitious upstart's "original take on it". Even if we forget, for a moment, that Dominic Watkins's Owl Ship resembles a couple of Tie Fighters somehow mangled together, we can rest assured that Alan Moore's original book is quite, well, ORIGINAL on its own without being fed through this sort of Hollywood meat grinder.

I am satisfied by Zack Snyder's adaptation, for the same reason I'm satisfied by Christopher Nolan's original Detective Comics inspiration. They are faithful to the comics, not just their own creative egos.
  3. Ladies and gentlemen. Plenty of great stuff is coming down the pipeline. For the love of baby Hercules, the Party Pack isn't some kind of Bad Omen of Terrible Doom.

I bought the Party Pack just prior to making this post. I'd much rather have bought the Ninja Pack, or the Mutant Pack, or the Wedding Pack (I hold off on perks, occasionally rewarding myself for milestones). But what I'm enjoying right now is thumbing my nose. At all the ninnies. You know who you are.

I mean, all of THIS, over eight bucks? REALLY? Would you endlessly write angry letters to a restaurant that offered some appetizer on the menu that YOU weren't interested in eating?

(It's rhetorical, you don't have to answer.)
  4. Smersh and Steelclaw, you guys have some interesting ideas. At just over a year of play, I've started to come up with various little rule sets and challenges for a couple of my characters. I'll incorporate this idea into the first character they seem a good fit for. The influence hit would not even bother me. Compelling challenges and discovered strategies are extremely rewarding.

But yes. I did know about that enhancement shortcut, discovered through a misclick.
  6. On Talos Island, the narrow landmass jutting westward from the Dark Astoria gate-- the theme there is the same theme heard when entering a dungeon in the game [CENSORED FOR PREVENTION OF TOTAL WORLD ANARCHY], a fun little dungeon crawler and time waster in the fine tradition of old games from the 1980s like [CENSORED FOR PREVENTION OF TOTAL WORLD ANARCHY]. Also, when one of Doctor Vahzilok's "zombots" (as War Witch refers to them in the comics), er, pukes acid all over your new boots-- I heard the same sound from alien invaders in [CENSORED FOR PREVENTION OF TOTAL WORLD ANARCHY]. I also heard the same police radio chatter in [CENSORED FOR PREVENTION OF TOTAL WORLD ANARCHY]. I think that's about it. Not really bothered by it.

Of course, it would be wrong not to mention the great job Paragon Studios recently did in updating many of the sounds in the game, such as footsteps, whooshing flying sounds, and all the other environmental ambiance to be found all over! (Flying feels so much more like flying now.) All in all, a step closer to TOTAL WORLD IMMERSION.

Enemies running for help, YES, that I'd like to see on occasion. I remember the first time I tried helping a "stranded woman" in Eastgate (The Hollows). That was a surprising "OH CRAP!" moment that me and my fellow newbie sidekick were quite entertained by.

As for enemies running for an escape, that MIGHT be cool in RARE INSTANCES, if the mission or contact explicitly warned you that part of your mission could involve preventing their planned escape. (And I'd get to chuckle at players who blindly roll through missions without reading anything.) I disagree with those who think ALL enemies ought to feel strong (or cunning) enough to face us straight-on, and suspect the origin of the sentiment is laziness.

Yes, I saw 30 minute, 10 minute and 5 minute warnings on Virtue.

  12. I'm satisfied by these pending changes, but dismayed by the blunt insensitivity in the majority of replies here. If you read between the lines (empathize), the OP seems concerned that his ability to CHOOSE is being traded away for this improvement. I won't argue that this is an improvement-- it is. But I will ALWAYS and unapologetically consider the plight of one who feels his freedom to choose is being negatively impacted.

I empathize. Nearly all of my characters have benefited, not just mechanically but THEMATICALLY, from the Fitness Power Pool. However, I DO have a couple of Natural Origin "everyday men turned heroes", for whom the first two powers in the Fitness Power Pool would have marred their theme conceptually. Some of you, who aren't conceptual/thematic thinkers and creators, may not understand this sentiment. All I can say is that I'm glad I was able to create those characters before a change like this made such characters impossible to create.

    Ha ha ha, very disturbing/entertaining.

What he said. That would be Positron. Lead Systems Designer. Patron Hero. Task Force Extraordinaire. And, like me, a guy who claimed his super hero persona long before City of Heroes was around.

So far, none of my characters make use of immersion-breaking punctuation. If a name (including reasonable variations) is taken, then I get to work creating something more original. This has been a challenge on several occasions, a welcome challenge that I met and satisfied. For anyone who DOESN'T consider this a welcome challenge, there are hundreds of generic fantasy MMOs out there, if not thousands. There was a guild JUST for Raistlin in one MMO I played. Same for Bob. There were over a hundred Bobs in Bob.

This isn't your average generic fantasy MMO. Parts of it are the antithesis of those. Consequently, I feel much respect for other players who are willing to bring their imaginations to work in City of Heroes, and little respect for those who aren't. Like Positron, some of my characters existed in other media long before City of Heroes came around. I've been making comic book stories since I was a kid. So the last thing I want to see is people ripping off my creative work, whether it's costumes, back stories or names. Tied to some of these names, and the stories and deeds behind them (some which are decades old), is a real sense of accomplishment AND OWNERSHIP. In a game that prioritizes subscriber-created content, this sentiment is FAR FROM CHILDISH.

It is important not to have that sense of ownership and accomplishment taken away from us on account of a very vocal minority.

Poor, misguided Jack. I'll stick with City of Heroes, thanks.

I'd be just fine with that. I'm about to start reading the Top Cow issues. I recently finished reading all the Blue King issues for the first time (I've only been around for a year). I was lucky enough to find the Top Cow issues in print at my local comic book store, so I've flipped through some of the pages and glanced at some of the art. And I can already tell you that I'd give my left brooch to have characters like WW, Apex and Horus presented to us through decent art like that found in the Top Cow issues. I greatly enjoyed reading the adventures of those three characters, and the end of their series was very well written. As has been said, they seemed to be, like ours, player characters.

I'm sure someone here will chime in with a spoiler for you, but the comics really are worth a read.
  17. I have to agree that villains are probably much rarer than rogues, and I like that Going Rogue's mechanics provide a clearer differentiation than what we had before (i.e. character bios). I spend most of my time blue side, but I have three red side. One of them is a small-time robber/rogue who got his hands on some electric body-gear. One of them veers between villainous/roguish behavior in pursuit of power, cooperative/roguish behavior in support of scientific progress, and extreme villainous behavior owing to bouts of insanity. And one of them is aiding a cosmic entity who uses/destroys entire universes as batteries to keep its own universe from burning out (pretty darn villainous).

As long as we're discussing this seriously (Ha ha ha).

In a matter of decades (overnight on the scale of things), we see a lopsided civilization where working class families buy nano-goo at the corner station to keep their station wagons running; and down the street at City Hall, intelligent machines are registering for citizenship. All you need to do is imagine the weirdness that would ensue in a world suddenly gifted with the five origins of power. The end result would be a world where some industries would evolve more quickly (because of better science and technology), while other industries would be less in demand (because we'd have magic or mutation to fulfill those needs) and would therefore evolve more sluggishly.

Some things are more advanced in the City of Heroes universe--partly because of a MUCH higher number of super geniuses and inventors existing in the world after the incident with Pandora's Box (an effect not unlike the ancient Celestials' tampering caused in the Marvel universe), as well as alien technology salvaged after the war. Other things look inconspicuously primitive, like old junk that is now re-purposed, or even sentient.

And many things would never be required to advance as quickly as we'd expect, thanks to everyday magic, and an explosion in magic artifact sales. On Primal Earth, the public at large seems to enjoy more access to magic, while exotic technology is tightly controlled by governments and moreso by Super Groups. Praetoria seems to be the reverse, with magic more tightly controlled and a ban on organized groups of metahumans.

So imagine how many more miles you could get out of your beat up old Ford if the local sorcerer was running a nice sale on magic wands that bless anything related to transportation with wheels-- the wand might be ancient, but it might not distinguish your Ford from any old chariot. On the flip-side, imagine being wealthy enough to afford a handful of self-replicating assemblers (nanotech). In that case, perhaps you'd simply grow some of the parts needed to remedy an ailing transmission, or even a lost or stolen purse!
  20. I've always liked the way Paragon City looks, war-walls and all. Being a fan of the storyline, I've always seen the war-walls within context. I realize this puts me in the minority; but at the same time, I trust the devs to do something even cooler if and when the walls ever go down.
  21. It was the same at 1 am CST. Precinct 5 was so packed, Officer Flint had to call for backup.

And that's when they sent me in to Praetoria, to get a handle on things.
  22. I have the "Spider-Man Noir" graphic novel that came out last year and highly recommend it.
    Here's a link: http://www.comicvine.com/spider-man-noir-/37-146956/

Good example of the comic sub-genre. Looking forward to buying Iron Man Noir too.
  23. AE was created with creators in mind (and potential fans of those creators). It was made so that players could create their own stories, villain groups, worlds, universes.

It was designed to be a content creation tool, not a ticket/reward/loot creation tool. And I'd still explore those creations even if there weren't any "rewards" for doing so. As a creator and lover of stories, I know what the real rewards of the MA system are.
  24. I consider this a matter of preference, and don't hold Vent usage against anyone. Paragon City exists in a free country, last I checked. That said, I can relate with you and Cipher and others. I use City of Heroes to wind down, often after a hard day's work. By the time I log in on many nights, I want immersion, I want to be DONE with reality for the day.

People are different. Some people abhor time alone, while others (myself included) need it to recharge. I understand that. In-game, I'm often solo, but otherwise my experience of other characters remains comfortably textual (and it helps that I'm a fast typist). But if it seems like someone's attention is distracted by various other streams of conversation, I'll seek more focused people. I always give mission partners and teams my full attention. It's the right thing to do.

Many of those only came here (or were sticking around at the time) because of the whole "PL to 50 in twenty minutes" thing.

"Is that anywhere near Atlas Park?"
Those videos were hilarious! I was SO glad when that plague ended. What's funny is, Issue 14 was what lured me into City of Heroes, because I've always enjoyed writing science fiction. But guess what kept me coming back month after month? The regular mission content and game lore! Over the past year+ of play, I've come down with an awesome case of Altitis, started reading comic books, and last but not least, worked on some arcs of my own. Well, a few months ago, I finally admitted that I had a problem... so I put my credit card on auto renew!
