I don't respec characters at the drop of a hat. I generally get things right the first time, after some careful thought. But I recently respecified a character (that really benefited from Hasten), mostly to get rid of Hasten. I found it increasingly difficult to ignore or explain away the fact that a pair of burning hands just didn't belong on that character.
I don't expect this to go on the top of the list for any of the devs. Completely understandable! It's a small gripe, compared with all the awesome stuff that DOES fit many of my characters. Nevertheless, it's a suggestion that I hope can go somewhere on someone's list. -
Well Steelclaw, reading over your ideas here (/hmmm emote), yes, yes, this all sounds reasonable to me (/yes emote).

Quote:Details about Shiva's origin is available in a couple of good places. A detailed history is available on the official website here. And from Cityoflore.com, a brief synopsis:Let's speak a bit of Shiva meteors, the Coming Storm, and i19. There's nothing in Praetorian history that suggests the Shivan meteor wouldn't have hit, right? What if, in this case, whatever the Shivans are got "Devoured" by Hamidon (or vice-versa?). That might be an explanation of the creature's radically different appearance and level of success, no?
Quote:1989 CE
Kurrin Wirake finds an Arcosian pod which led to the Australian military confiscating it and Dr. Seetha Neremanu quickly deciphering it's purpose and message. Dr. Neremanu alerted the UN immediately that a planet destroying entity was on it's way to Earth and it would reach Earth in a year. The entity was named Shiva and a project to save the Earth, Operation Vishnu, was formed. A group of volunteer heroes from Russia, America, China, and France were put together, called the Preservers, and they launched themselves into space to stop Shiva with a nuclear strike. The explosion was detected and Shiva vanished from sensors, but the Preservers were lost.
Summer - A rain of meteorites, presumably from the remains of Shiva, hit Bloody Bay, causing the entire area to be radioactive, and soon after Shivans began appearing all over the area.
The story writers at Paragon Studios are bound to get around to some of this stuff sooner or later. In the interim though, some players should get together and form a community standards consortium, for voting on AE arcs that could be considered acceptable "Official Unofficial Canon", so we can start wrapping up these plot holes.
Try to get a sticky thread, the devs nod of approval, or even a community made website. Set up polls and let the community at large put in their votes, rather than just relying on a committee's biases. Couldn't hurt, and after all, this is one of the reasons they gave us AE in the first place. -
Quote:Thanks, UberGuy. I cringed at "Dragonball-esque", but ignore my sensibilities, because that explanation helped the origins of power to make way more sense to me than they already did (and they already made quite a bit of sense). In the game canon, particularly in the Origin of Power missions, Natural powers are about training and self focus. This happens to mesh very well with martial arts (no caps - I don't mean the powerset), athletics, and maybe old-school eastern-style (non-mutant, non-magic) psychic power.
I think it's worth noting, though, that in CoH Natural characters are taking that to rather Dragonball-esque levels of achievement. A lot of people on the forums do things like eschew travel powers or avoid flashy powersets (like Fire Blast) in the interest of mimicking levels of power a "baseline", if exceptional, human would have. But based on the Origin of Power dialogs, I think that in CoH, your level 50 Natural character is standing next to the Tech, Science, Magic and Mutant ones and beating face on true par with them.
I don't care how well trained and self-motivated you are, you have to be doing something pretty special to deal the same damage with your fists or feet as the guy in the high-tech power armor, the guy charged with the Power Cosmic, or the half-demon son of a god. Even if you're causing high damage because you have preternaturally good aim and timing, you're still doing something pretty superhuman.
I think the implication is that it's fine to be a Natural flier or super-speeder, a Natural Fire Blaster, or a Natural Stone Tank, even if you're human. You've figured out how to unlock or unleash something within yourself that lets you do things that other humans can't without having mutant genes, chemical alteration or bombardment by strange radiations. Many of the origins have some tendency to overlap conceptually, and I think "natural" power at this level is borderline mysticism, but I think it's worth considering that "Natural Origin" may mean a lot more than just highly trained and athletic.
While reading some of that, I remembered flying and super leaping scenes from "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", something I haven't seen in several years.
Edit: Something funny. My characters live in Virtue, but I have a character that I play in Freedom with one of my brothers. That character, a normal man, is able to do some extraordinary things. This he owes to the fact that Freedom isn't real. It's a holographic simulation of reality inside a supercomputer in Virtue (one of Dr. Aeon's experiments, perhaps, or Crey's). I realize this may come as a shock to some of you. I'm sorry. -
Quote:I love a good story, particularly epic and multifaceted ones. After playing a large MMO (prominently featuring internet spaceships), I came over to City of Heroes after reading an article about Issue 14: Mission Architect. I was excited to experience AND participate in the story-telling process (and still am), but soon found myself just as swept up in the game's pre-existing official story arcs. For this past year and a half, leveling and XP has been a tertiary concern, far less important than investigating my way through story arcs and writing my characters into the universe they inhabit (I submit as evidence my first level 50, just a week ago). Now, when I run with a team, usually they're not interested in the story; in fact, it's usually to run a TF in the fastest time, in order to more quickly finish it, get the reward drop, and move on to another TF to do the same thing. Finding a group that actually wanted to run it a slower pace was the exception, rather than the rule. I found myself catching up on the story on the Paragon Wiki, instead of the TF itself. It seemed counterintuitive to actually playing the game.
But in order to continue to have fun with the game in this way, I increasingly have to rely on non-intuitive workarounds, such as the Paragon Wiki (for catching up on TFs), and even Notepad (for later perusing character bios, which can't be read from your friend list).
I remember being excited about my first task force, expecting a big event that would take days (or weeks!) to unravel, that would reveal major plot details. Instead, I got a confusing two-hour blur of skirmishes, devoid of any meaningful context, punctuated by badgers and XP-obsessed teammates. I love City of Heroes, but I would be lying if I said that wasn't an experience tarnished by disillusionment.
Just recently, I learned about the concept of "static teams", which are teams of characters who meet and play at agreed-upon times. I learned about this concept on the forums, not in-game where the vast majority of players are. The idea of static teams wasn't invented by the development team. A portion of the community simply needed to address an immersion-breaking hole in the game: there is no feature within Team Search to enable the process of forming and tracking static teams, or even finding players who aren't solely obsessed with Pavlovian rewards. This is a problem. -
Quote:I know someone will be tempted to spoil the story for Scene_EU; please don't! All I'm going to say is, there are some great surprises coming your way if one of your characters goes to work for Vanguard (and if you read through the content associated with those missions).aww the space station would've been a great place to host a pre-emptive TF/SF against rikti invasions, but I guess that would've just led to an EVE-esque expansion
I'm more interested in your [CENSORED] comment. Though I miss [CENSORED] gritty realism, City of Heroes is simply more engaging for me and many people I've talked to. I played [CENSORED] for years before coming over to City of Heroes a year and a half ago. The lack of personalization in [CENSORED] is one of that game's biggest obstacles keeping science fiction fans from sticking around. However, [CENSORED] will soon (TM) come out with a "walking in stations" style expansion.
My point is that Paragon Studios has a true ace up its sleeve if it plans on also giving us space stations in the near future. Hopefully including space station art for super group bases, such as "rooms with a view". I'm suggesting this for three reasons: First, the community has always reacted favorably to the idea. Secondly, there's nothing wrong with staying competitive, and the sky shouldn't be the limit when it comes to staying head and shoulders above that kind of competition. Thirdly, Paragon Studios can do it better than [CENSORED]. Maybe not in the spirit of gritty sci-fi realism, but CERTAINLY in the spirit of FUN. -
Happy birthday, Steelclaw. I always know I'm in for an entertaining read when I see your name on a thread, and I see you as one of the icons around here.

Quote:Awesome stories Frostdrake and Sam. I just went up against Hro'Dtohz last night for the first time, with a tank that makes a lot of tanks look squishy. Hro'Dtohz wiped the floor with me, he hardly broke a sweat.well, its entirely rp, but back when i got the game, i made my character seraph blue, an angelic character, who's bio mentioned she was supposed to "bring peace between humans and rikti". now this was before i found out the story of the rikti, i just knew they were aliens, and she was an angel, so it made a good vague destiny type motivation. well, she didnt solo very well (emp/lit defender) but after screwing around for a while, issue 10 for a while had a lot of pugging on my server, so who is the bad guy she stomped to get 50? with some friends..it was hro'd toz. now, knowing the story of what he does, it kind of was humorously prophetic that as per the text of finishign that arc, she kind of did do what had been kind of a throw away bio detail. the purple drop was sweet luck however, good show on that. Guess to reach your full potential, you have to overcome yourself.

Quote:You're correct. But I was sort of being tongue-in-cheek.To each their own opinion Captain-Electric. I will admit his post felt a little over the top but, he is welcome to have it as you are too. Besides which, if Paragon Studios were to follow his advice, they would easily improve their profits on this pack.
Seriously though, I see both sides. $8 is not much money for me. And I'm not a big earner, and I pay my own bills. I bought the pack, not because I think it's super-awesome, or to take one for the team (well, maybe a LITTLE for this reason). Mostly I bought it because, uh, just because. I dunno. Which, yeah, puts me in the minority.
So I suspect Paragon Studios will put more stuff in their booster packs in the future. Many MMO subscribers can be weird with money. I know MMO players who blow a lot of money on random stuff like junk food, but get infuriated over the price of a booster pack. -

Episodes Seven, eight, and nine would be cool. Ah, well. Maybe he's just run out of ideas.

The Super Dad basically has the same power set as my first City of Heroes character (who is still one of my main characters). Super Strength, Invulnerability, Super Leap, Fitness, Fighting, Super Speed (mostly for Haste and Flurry), and I sort of felt Super Dad's exhilaration as he first leaped between rooftops. And as he took his first super punch! He's definitely slotting some Knock-back Training Enhancements by the end of this first episode.
I also think Julie Benz would make a spot-on Susan Storm Richards (the regular long-running Marvel comics version). -
Quote:I'm standing by my Christopher Nolan nod, but if Nolan thought Darron Aronofsky had the right stuff, I'd take his word for it. (To Aronofsky's credit, I probably like The Fountain more than Aronofsky himself does.) That director had my respect at Pi: I was digesting quite a bit of Sarte at the time, and it resonated with me.I actually think that if Aronofsky wants it, it'll be his, providing Christopher Nolan is going to be the major decision maker.

Until I saw Noble Savage mention it as a bug, I figured they turned them off on purpose to ease lag for GR. It would be cool if they were programmed to walk AROUND us, or something. Don't get me wrong, all the civilians add to my experience, they help the environment feel more alive. But have you ever seen a nice old civilian lady hobble along and effortlessly push a huge 300-pound cyborg out of her way (while saying "Nice day, isn't it?")? Yeah. I know it's a small complaint, but it doesn't add to my experience.
-
Hopefully these solutions will last for a while. There's no right or wrong here, but by design, the game places more emphasis on the journey than the destination. As it's been hinted at by a few others, it's possible to diminish the game's strengths on one's own terms.

Quote:So the donuts in Praetoria are all laced with super jalapenos, is that what you're saying?
Active and reactivated account holders will be able to try out our newest and most visually captivating power sets* while discovering a brand new parallel world and the intestine struggle ripping apart its denizens behind those sterile Praetorian walls**! -
A regrettable situation, but one that you can learn to avoid in the future! Whenever I get a random Tell like that, I briefly add the person to my friend list, allowing me to see where they're at and what level they are. If they're not a match for my level or in some far-away zone (or sometimes even if their Tell is composed poorly), then it probably isn't something I'd enjoy very much, and I pass on the offer.
As for Tells from strangers inviting me to super groups, those people are immediately put on my ignore list. While this may seem harsh, I've found that no one in a QUALITY super group will recruit in that manner to begin with. Furthermore, many characters who spam these ads via Tells will inevitably belong to the same player. For these reasons, judicious use of the ignore filter has led to a more pleasant experience, allowing me to spend more of my time meeting QUALITY people. -
Christopher Nolan could give us a believable, engaging Superman.

Most of my non-game breaking issues have been resolved over email satisfactorily (shout out to GM Lloyd). But my first meeting with a GM was, shall we say, completely freaking awesome.
It's over a year ago, I'm totally new, not even a month of play. I'm wondering around the Hollows busting gangs and for the life of me, can't understand why I have stopped gaining XP. So I page a GM, and wait.
After a few minutes, a POLICE DRONE CAREENS OVER A HILL, slams into me, turns back around, slams into me again, does a few tight circles around me, and then pushes me around a few more times for good measure before coming to a stop, LOLing, and asking me (more seriously now) what the problem was.
After explaining my dilemma, the police drone explained conning, and why all the Skulls, Hellions, Lost and Trolls were now gray. After making sure I was all set, it warmly welcomed me to Paragon, and raced back over the hill.
I've never seen anything like it since. I'll give that GM five stars for awesomeness. -
I've tried a few times now with the same results. Virtue is my only server too, really. I have "concept" characters on Freedom but tend to avoid that server for dedicated play.
How long has this issue been preventing players from logging into the game? -

Quote:Fully agree with that. Also, after scrolling through the flurry of knee-jerk reactions (mine included), uh, did we just get trolled?I wouldn't mind a "reinterpretation" of Watchmen, but not as the first movie. I have no problem with great comic stories becoming like Shakespeare or the Greek literature in their many retellings, but since a Watchmen movie is so close to when it was originally published, you gotta go faithful at first!
