Upon creation of the account - it recommended to me people in two other states I've lived in - most of whom I have not spoken to in any way in over 5 years, recommended my actual High School as a follow or whatever. Now, I haven't used this computer for chatting with any of the people it recommended that were in the state my high school was in, none of those people should have had the email address I signed up using. How did it know to link me to these people even as far as recommendations go? THAT is my issue with FB - even putting in minimal and throwaway info I feel it had to somehow violate my privacy if it somehow knew to link me to those people.

That is simply too intrusive for my comfort level online - given that I have a stalker ex-husband that I've moved half-a-country away from and he doesn't currently know what part of the country to find me in - believe me, my privacy online is extremely important when my real name or info about who I am friends with is concerned. So, got my emote - TYVM and now the account is set for perma-delete in 14 days. At least until the next time I have to create a throwaway FB. Next time I have to do this I'll use _no_ real info and a hotmail acct or something, but sheesh, throwaway emails are one reason I have a domain.
Thank you very much for the heads-up on this. In my case, I don't really feel I have anything to hide. But I do consider my personal, super-hero happy fun escape time to be VRY SRS BZNZ. Which means I'm going to attempt to make a Facebook account JUST for Captain-Electric and not for ME.

    DON'T WORRY, I HAVE A PLAN.

    Oooh

I don't want to see any of the Freedom Phalanx die.

I even started to understand Statesman's attitude, while reading the comics. There's a reason why a few of the Phalanx members sometimes display petty attitudes and behavior (especially in Statesman's case), they are kind of like the Greek pantheon of Primal Earth, and Paragon City is like their Olympus. It's not an exact analogy, but it's not far from the mark either.

On a side note, see how I wrote that without spoiling any details, maybe just hinting? And I figure EVERYONE should know "THAT" by now. But I'm practicing keeping my lips sealed for all the innocent new arrivals who are soon to come! Come to think of it, I didn't know much about Statesman's origin for the first six months I played. I kind of saw him as a Captain America/Superman amalgam, but boy was I wrong. Anyway, I read about it in Top Cow's first City of Heroes issue, as opposed to reading a spoiler on the forum. Made it much cooler.

More on topic, sometimes heroes in the comics have to die. It reminds us that they have really been putting their lives on the line all this time. It also reminds us that their enemies are serious about getting rid of them. All good fiction builds tension. Comics are no different. You can't have tension without conflict, sometimes dangerous conflict.

When heroes and villains are brought back from the dead, people traditionally grumble and moan, but those have been some of the most interesting and entertaining stories in comics history. You might say, "well, comics AREN'T good for building tension, because they always bring the characters back." This is a popular meme. But it's not true for those of us who've been emotionally gripped by a story arc that was well-written, one that threatened a super hero's life, or the lives of civilians they're protecting.

A good story makes you forget about Fourth Wall concepts like comics traditions, and places you right in the context of the story. This is the pinnacle of "pretend". Good stories encourage us to turn all of our real world biases off at the door, like you would your cell phone at a movie. There will always be people who can't seem to do either of these things. But most of us can sympathize with a hero in danger, who wouldn't be aware they'd just be conveniently written back into existence some day if they die.

When a character dies, you don't know when they'll return, or how they'll have changed. Sometimes, a character might not come back for years. The possibility that one of your favorite characters might not be around for years can build tension. And sometimes, they don't return.

You're correct, though and I even caught onto that myself in another thread where I was a bit more careful about potential spoilers. I apologize for any spoilage here.
Thank you. Apology accepted. It's not like I've never spoiled a book or movie ending for someone, I'm sure most people have. But this was definitetly a big spoiler for me and I'm a two year vet. So when the newbie floodgates open, I hope people will be mindful of this. Btw, it was the Rikti and Ouroboros both, because I wasn't around when Ouroboros came into existence. I've also been putting the Ouroboros arcs off until just recently. Also I spend more time in-game than here on the forums, so I don't read everything there is to read.

Edit: Also, most of my friends in-game came into CoH around the same time I did, give or take. Out of almost all of them, only a couple of us seem to visit the website or forums regularly (judging by how often I have to tell people about updates and stuff). So if you're wondering how something that's considered open knowledge to some might not be open knowledge to all, there it is.

It certainly didn't help that Ouroboros is run by yet another Nemesis alt or maybe he's even our Lord Nemesis who finally did become Invincible only to discover that it meant that HE had to turn around and save the world now. Then there's our Super DeeJay...

Instead of making him really subtle and maybe even admirable in some fashion, he's just this pumped up would-be dictator with silly super-villain motives. Dude, I really enjoy reading your posts, very smart, always informed. I'm not saying this to be a jerk, but I have to say it. You just ruined and spoiled part of the game for me. Not everyone here is a six-year vet or whatever. I started playing in March of 2009, but I have 23 characters and only one of them is level 50 (no incarnates yet). The in-game stories are a massive reason for my subscribing. I haven't seen everything yet. I'm not normally given to impulses or extremes (not including booster pack purchases heh), but I'm seriously considering limiting my forum reading to the News and Announcements section from now on.

Again, not saying this to be a jerk. And if I thought you were a jerk, I wouldn't bother either. You seem like a cool guy. I hope you'll reconsider next time you want to non-nonchalantly drop a major spoiler in a general forum thread.

Alternately, maybe I'm the one at fault here, and I should expect to see content spoilers on the forums. Maybe the community is OK with spoiling the game content for newer players. Okay. I can accept that. No sarcasm, just let me know what you guys think. I can still enjoy the game without using these forums.

No, I wouldn't kick someone for dancing in a cut-scene. But if you had compromised the mission, you'd get booted for compromising the mission. Actually, yes, you'd get kicked even if you made the mission more likely to fail (but it didn't). Why? Because if it's a high stakes mission, I'd think you were being the jerk for risking the operation so that you could essentially go "Hey! Look at me! Look! Me me me lol!" If your team's time investment holds no value for you, who's the jerk?

I'd even kick you if you were on an RP team that I was leading, and if the rest of the [SUPER SRS] team seemed agitated by you. A good team leader keeps the team fun for everybody. Except War-Nugget lol.

    Oooh

This isn't aimed at anyone in particular in this thread. There's a sentiment I've noticed across a lot of threads. To be honest, I kind of think people are overreacting when they worry about Arachnos (and Lord Recluse in particular) being "displaced" by other, shinier villains. For a long time, Statesman and Recluse have enjoyed a classic Saturday morning cartoon tug-of-war that dwarfed the legitimacy of other threats, and made Primal Earth less complicated on its face. But this is an area where it's better to be more complicated.

Most of us are adults here, many of us read comics where Doctor Doom isn't the only villain to worry about. Dark Reign is a perfect example, look at how Norman Osborn literally stole the show. Meanwhile, heroes like Spider-Man, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four have their own signature villains to contend with. The Joker is as much a concern for Batman as Magneto is to the X-Men. Magneto could smash the Joker, but that makes the Joker no less threatening to the citizens that Batman has sworn to protect. Similarly, the Hellions and the Skulls are no less a threat to my "street-level" character Time's Arrow, than Lord Recluse is to Captain-Electric. Because of the game's built-in graduation to higher levels of villains, I had no way of expressing this reality for Time's Arrow until Mission Architect came along.

The point I'm making is-- well, to put it a better way, the hope I'm expressing is that the signature story arcs will give Paragon Studios an opportunity to flesh out ALL KINDS of underdeveloped villains, and give them much-deserved attention.

Some enemies (like the Trolls) may not need to be unnecessarily overcomplicated. But on the same token, many people I've teamed with in-game seem to view the Council and the 5th Column as uncoordinated goons who pose no substantial threat to Paragon City. This is absolutely not the case according to the fiction, so I'm hoping the signature story arcs will allow these villain groups to teach our characters a valuable lesson about the consequences of complacency.

Don't even get me started on Nemesis. He's jokingly been reduced to an in-game meme (though perhaps this is by his design LOL). But go read this bit of history on the official website, and you'll see why I think this villain is capable of doing more harm to Paragon City than Lord Recluse.

On top of all this, I'm hoping that the signature story arcs will introduce us occasionally to smaller threats, "villains of the week", the kind you see in comics in-between standard arcs, or who sometimes serve to kick-start bigger plots (think of Tracer). And as I said previously in this thread, I think the signature arcs pose an opportunity for well-known comic authors to do guest work for Paragon Studios. It would be neat. Maybe an IP cross-over could even happen. Hey, I can dream. Certainly not between CoH and "the big two" publishers, but maybe other franchises like Top Cow, who have a positive history with Paragon Studios.

If alone time is what people desire, then it seems odd to post the reason for alone time on a public forum with the expectation that people will leave the post alone? I don't think Im crazy for saying that.
I don't know Samuel from Adam, but I can't argue too much with the rant in his OP. The problem is less about him, more about PUGs or what-have-you. I don't think we need to psycho-analyze Sam in this case. Have you done any PUGs lately? Your average PUG is filled with people who think City of Heroes is an arcade game, not an RPG made up of stories that you're supposed to play through cooperatively. I didn't subscribe to Street Fighter online.

I've been lucky here, I've discovered great joy in running regular missions with people who like to stop and read all the clues and mission texts along with me, people whose playing styles aren't a complete (and nasty) surprise like in PUGs; People who like small teams like I do, who take the time to play strategically on missions, and so on. I was lucky enough to meet some of these people on the day I joined. So to be fair, I almost wonder if Samuel hasn't made the right sorts of friends in-game yet.

In the MMORPG I played previous to CoH, I went for three years and never made any real friends. Most of the people I met there were so obsessed with XP and mashing buttons, they had barely any clue as to what the game they were playing was even about. Sound familiar?

I feel almost like I'm interrupting a private conversation here (even though it's a public forum). I don't really know anyone on these forums, but over the past couple of years I've made some good friends in the game. IRL I am social and easy to get along with, but because my hobbies have always been solitary (like writing, reading), I can't recharge my batteries around other people. There are nights in City of X when I feel like I've had way too much human contact at work or whatever, and I just type /hideall and spend time with my characters, doing my own thing, and sometimes it's the best cure in the world for all my ills.

Some people, inversely, are literally scared to be alone with their own thoughts for very long. People like that generally don't have an inkling of understanding for why I need to go and be by myself for stretches of time. What used to really irk me was when friends like that [rather selfishly] seemed offended when I needed time to myself--as if I was doing something wrong to them. These days I am pretty quick to let people know, this is who I am, and I owe no apologies for it.
  16. I started playing City of X in March of 2009. That's how I think about it, anyway. But ACTUALLY, way back in December of 2004, I bought City of Heroes and played it for a month. I haven't touched that old account since, but it is still tied to my master account. I remember thinking this game was AWESOME, but I was invested heavily in another MMORPG at the time. This was also a few years before I started reading comic books again, so maybe I wasn't feeling it as much as I do now. The only character I remember making was a classic fedora-wearing detective with radiation powers. Don't ask me why. That experience was a long time ago and short-lived, so I don't really consider it to be part of my CoH experience. But it will be interesting to log into that account with City of Heroes Freedom and see what happens.

As far as my "real" account goes, VIP all the way.

I really hope that's what we get with the signature story arcs.
I hadn't thought of it this way, "a monthly comic book that we can play". But yeah, it seems like maybe they're aiming for that, considering the new multi-loading screen technology that will allow us to flip through several "pages". I also seem to remember in one of the recent interviews, it was mentioned that this would get more use than just in the new Galaxy City tutorial.

I enjoyed the CoH comic books, and all the comics being produced by players. But THIS is a fracking cool way for them to take it to the next level. Unmoving storylines and underdeveloped signature characters are a common problem in MMORPGs. For a comic book-themed game, this sounds like the perfect antidote: monthly installments, just like the comics, pushing stories and characters forward. It could also present an opportunity for new or well-known comic book authors to come on board for some guest contracts. Would be cool. (I bet someone's thought of that.)

Of course, our characters are the REAL stars of this fiction. So I hope this will also inspire some of our more popular Mission Architect authors to start cranking out some episodic arcs. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has played through a great story arc, and wished the author had kept going with the world they briefly introduced me or my team to. (You can buy extra arc slots in the in-game store from the character roster screen.)

As for who will be dying (or "falling"), I have my ideas, just like everyone else. But I hope I'm wrong. When it comes to these kinds of story arc teasers, the best writing is always the kind that surprises.

Just to add some details. Golden Girl is correct, but you can't blame someone for not knowing, what with Back Alley Brawler being a semi-retired super trainer, no task force, and all those plaques tying him to the Regulators super group. He actually founded the Regulators, they were a big thing through the 70's and 80's. BAB went into retirement sometime after that (he made a comeback to help with the Rikti War). The group had completely fallen apart by the end of the Rikti War, maybe because, like every other SG at that time, many of its members were unaccounted for. But the SG's significance had waned long before the invasion. To my knowledge, there's no mention of them after the 80's (someone please correct me), so for all we know they could have disbanded before the war even started.

The Regulators had previously focused their efforts on the "war on drugs", eventually taking on the Superadine problem. After the war, Back Alley Brawler joined the Freedom Phalanx. He knew Statesman already, as the two had teamed up in the mid-eighties for the first big bust of a Superadine lab. In his time, BAB has also worked closely with other high profile groups like the Dawn Patrol and the Midnight Squad. If you're thinking "the dude is a big deal," yep he is; but believe it or not, he's a natural origin. Kind of like Batman, he learned training techniques from all over the world to toughen himself up. Unlike Bruce Wayne, he was a police officer beforehand. He's also connected to Blue Steel, who has been one of his friends since childhood and who was also a member of the Regulators before it disbanded.

There's your history lesson for the day. :P

I have a LOT that I could add to this discussion, opinion-wise. (I know, I know, who am I, right?) Fortunately for all of you, I have to sleep for work tomorrow/today. I sympathize massively-hugely-enormously with the OP. But (BUT!!!), people in our camp would do well to learn our lesson, and realize that the Incarnate "WE'LL TELL YOU WHERE YOUR POWERS COME FROM, WE'RE IN CONTROL OF OUR LORE, YOUR LORE AND YOUR MOM'S LORE" fiasco is what happens when writers, overeager, step on the imaginative portion of their audience's toes instead of meeting us halfway. This game is all about creative freedom, but Incarnates is a flop in exactly this category; though it is impressive and wildly successful in other ways.
  20. If you're posting vehement arguments and rebuttals in this thread, you're dorking out bigtime. That's bad coming from me. I'm one of those "internal RPers", often cognizant of the way my characters fit into this world as if it were real. But on the same token, it is a comic book inspired world. It's far more enjoyable if you can separate serious story content from brief comic relief.

Those two characters make a funny joke and punchline. The first time I overheard them was in the Ski Chalet, I'm guilty of chuckling. Maybe it'd be funnier if she actually punched him one of these days. Like, on Valentine's Day. In the face.

It's true that today's adult-oriented comic books handle hot-button topics occasionally. True to form, some of City of X's story arcs are surprising jewels in this regard. But Turndown Girl and Desperate Guy aren't meant to be representatives of anything substantial. Those who see something more are only here as representatives of their own experiences (and biases or frustrations), not Turndown Girl's or Desperate Guy's.

Maybe the only thing that separates Desperate Guy from romance (with someone other than Turndown Girl) is a better shirt and a better attitude. He may need a completely new personality too, and body and face. It's pretty hopeless, but who knows? Turnup Girl, a plant controller, could be waiting right around the corner. Actually IN the corner, talking to the plant. She's so shy! Wait, where was I going with this...? Oh yeah. Deep psychoanalysis of two punny NPCs.

When I was reading this I had to scroll down after "Do I regret it?" to continue reading. I was pleasantly surprised. You are living proof that players should approach the game in their own way, that there's no better way to play.

There's a link in my signature, "Guide to Altitis" that describes my evolving playstyle, focused on carving out an engrossing--but not tedious--fictional world for my characters (while close, this doesn't always translate into RP). It was written a year ago. It's nothing like your set of rules. But like yours, mine has evolved, becoming more complicated in some ways and simpler in others, always with the main goal of fun in mind. Players have thanked me for writing that guide, either for validating their playstyles or giving them ideas.

PvP in this type of a game is not skill related as in a fast twitch FPS game. It is auto hit and all you need is a target. Then after you work the numbers the auto hit portion is sorted and defense and resistance and other buffs/debuffs sorted.

If you can click it and you are in range you have attacked it.

But the game play could be altered - Flags are Temp Powers on a timer. If you die they drop awaiting the next click for x seconds until they return to spawn.

Escort mission we already have! But they could be built into PvP quite easily.

I know I once played in a Dustbowl league in Half Life. We could recreate this mapstyle very easily. Stalkers are the Spy archtype. Tanks are the large gunners, defenders - medics, Blasters - soldiers, Master Minds - engineers.
Infernus Hades, this is a genius proposal--Yes, yes! Provide options that allow the players to create their own rule sets; TONS of options and ways to mix it up in new and unexpected ways. Popular rule sets would gain a big audience quickly, but niche rule sets could also entice players who are harder to satisfy, need bigger challenges or whatever. And if you couldn't find the type of PvP missions/arenas that fit your tastes, you could CREATE it right in Mission Architect. If the system was innovative, and if you put your mind to it, you could create varieties of "combat" that felt more like puzzles, battles of wit and intellect. In-your-face combat is all fine and good, but imagine for instance a controller's paradise; an abstract dimension where physical damage is somehow nullified and the only way to win is by using the environment to destroy the opponent's interdimensional phasing device (a type of flag).

... Or they could just stick a few hack-n-slash PvP options in there for us, hee hee. If you'll please excuse my imagination, it's a bit excitable....
