  1. I'm sure everything will be just fine: I covered my computer case with tin foil!

  2. As the warning of the Coming Storm hangs heavy in the air, Back Alley Brawler calls upon you to investigate growing reports of a doomsday cult in Galaxy City. Who are these "Followers of Shiva?" And are their predictions the rantings of insanity, or a sign of things to come...?

Arc Name: The Final Days of a Galaxy
    Arc ID: 517875
    Morality: Neutral
    Author: @Neon Rider
Difficulty Level: 1-54 (Story arc may contain archvillains and enemies with custom power selections.)
    Length: Medium

Neon Rider, the author, is a regular teammate of mine. His story arc writing is enviable, and his knowledge of canon make his arcs as good as official in my mind. So I pleaded with him to create something leading up to forthcoming events in Issue 21. I also offered to advertise it on the forums if he did, so here it is! Neon Rider's story arcs are challenging (but rewarding if you're up for a good story), and generally designed for teams. This one is no different. And if you like to role-play, consider giving Neon Rider a shout before starting the mission. "The Final Days of a Galaxy" was definitely more memorable with the storyteller there to help guide the team along through the story.

For an added experience, meet up with your team at the Galaxy City AE building. After the mission, walk (or fly) around Galaxy City for a few moments, reflecting on the final events of Neon Rider's story arc. You might just feel a chill run down your character's spine.

Edit: If you like to read every detail in a story arc (and who doesn't?), then stop to read everything in this arc; even the villain descriptions feature important story details you might not want to miss!

    Server downtime

This is the usual time of day for downtimes, always has been. Yes, they are normally scheduled for Thursdays. I have only been around for two years, but that is long enough to notice how downtimes grow more numerous when a new issue is approaching; especially if it's a big one. It's a necessary inconvenience.

Stuff I've done during downtimes when I was in a City of X mood:
    • Read Virtueverse profiles for characters and teams, or create my own.
    • Browse comic book characters, teams, and story arcs from other franchises.
    • Read City of Comic Creators comics.
    • Visit the Paragon Times archive.
    • Visit the official Timeline.
    • Visit the unofficial Timeline. (It's big, really, really big.)
    • Read the official City of Heroes comics. (Note: This is the new place to read these. Paragon Studios just recently removed the comics from the official website.)
    • My Marvel Digital subscription grants access to a massive online library including back issues ($60 annually, but there are a ton of free comics every week).
    • Buy single digital issues of comics at Comixology. DC, Vertigo, Top Cow, Image, Wildstorm, Dark Horse, Marvel, and so on. This is the iTunes of the comicverse.

By the time you log back in to City of X, chances are high that you'll have some brand new character ideas.
  5. I doubt I would do this, but I'm curious also. I'd like to hear something from someone who has both done this, and had fun with it. Either from a gameplay perspective, or a conceptual perspective.

I have 23 characters. Many of them are truly effective in combat. Some of them aren't. Some nights, all I want to do is play one who isn't. Why? Different reasons. Sometimes for the challenge, other times the concept is entertainment enough.

A couple of examples: I have a pure archer defender who isn't powerful at all, but is fun to imagine as a "non-super" natural origin while playing. I also have an Earth/Kin controller who I purposely gimped. No AoE slowdowns. Why? Because combat is more frenetic, challenging and tactical (i.e. fun). He is often forced to react quickly to all incoming opponents. Gimped is a strong word actually, because he's very playable, and it's great button-mashing fun. I actually discovered this fact after I took Quicksand. Soon after, I spent a respec to get rid of it, because I realized the power had resulted in an easy--and boring--character to play. Now he's one of my funnest characters to play, and I never hear complaints while teamed. (I use Repel when he gets in a bind.)

On the flip-side, a few of my characters are well-planned and well-IO'd, and rarely go down. And yeah, it's a not-so-terrible feeling when your tank is the only one standing after a good team wipe. It's a really nice feeling when you finish the fight for the whole team, and then start passing out wakies (that you knew you'd brought for them, not you). But if this were the only type of character I could play, I would have quit long ago.

One last thing. Surprisingly enough, one of my rarely-defeated characters is the weakling pure archer mentioned above. It's true. After much practice, I play him well. Granted, I usually solo him or team with friends who are okay with him. But you know what? Every time he's the last man standing in a nice, long, bloody conflict, it's ten times more satisfying than when one of my tanks accomplishes the same in a fraction of the time.
  6. Happy Birthday Noble Savage. Thank you for putting your mark on the City of X universes. They (and we) have awesomely benefited from your awesome talents of awesomeness.

Would explain a few things. Y'know, most of the RLSH community loathes him. They call him a vigilante, not a super hero. In the interview, Jones called them all Real Life Sandwich Handlers or something like that; I laughed. (He's tackling real-life bad guys while they're making sandwiches for homeless people--in their spandex).

I'll keep an eye out for it in the future though. Writing comics must be a lot of fun. I have the big $40 Civil War edition with the full annotated script after the story. It was SO cool reading through the process. Looking back through that stuff has inspired me to start planning out some Mission Architect stories. I know AE is not the same at all; but still, I feel like I have a few tips and tricks to start out with, for moving my stories along.

To me, it appears BAB worked his way slyly into the ranks of the Freedom Phalanx without anyone really knowing who invited him. And what difference does it make?

Question: "What kind of super group does Back Ally Brawler join?"

Answer: "Any super group he wants."

I pity the fool who says BAB must submit to a SG's interview process.

Very cool article. I kind of think this was inevitable, life imitates art and all. I've been following all these stories over the past couple years, and I've been doing a lot of face-palming. Not so much with Phoenix Jones though. He isn't the first "real deal" citizen crime fighter--Dark Guardian and his team put themselves in tough spots all the time, confronting drug dealers in NYC--but Jones is the first to really capture this much mind-share (his totally awesome suit probably helps). It's getting increasingly difficult to look at Phoenix Jones, stab wounds still fresh, and the rest of the Rain City Superheroes, going back out to kick dealers off corners, and go, "Oh, they're just pretending."

Still, awesome or not, it's dangerous, very dangerous, and these guys and gals aren't Batman. Most of them have way less training than mall cops. Phoenix Jones is getting his training in the worst possible way: trial and error, out on the streets. Maybe in 10 or 15 years he'll have criminals quaking in their boots, that is if he lives that long.

I had always hoped real life's first vigilantes would be unsatisfied police officers, CIA operatives or Navy SEALS, or something. People with an abundance of skills and tools to keep our cities safer at night. Instead we have average citizens putting on masks. It's pretty bad when you think about it, but I'll draw a comic book comparison to make it clearer. Think about all those ordinary citizens in the comics, the ones who aren't prepared to defend themselves, who are always saved in the nick of time, when the super heroes swoop in to beat up the bad guys, when 911 isn't good enough. Well, what if those super heroes never came? What would those ordinary citizens do then? This is what. In cities like Belltown, and New York, some of them would start to go crazy. They'd start putting on masks. Frail fists shaking, they'd leave their homes and families at night, against any sound mind's reasonable judgement.

Would make a cool comic book.

Okay *seriousface*, I think for my own sense of lore/cohesion I'm just going to go with Positron's explanation, "Even Arachnos is confused!" BAB has a heart of gold, and in a city like Paragon, the guy can't seem to stick to the "retirement" side of his semi-retired status for very long at a time. With the Regulators probably no longer active, he tends to team up with the Freedom Phalanx a lot because he knows he can trust them, and vice versa. If something ever happened to Manticore, I'm sure BAB would end up replacing him. Even if the Regulators ARE still doing some work, they were never about the biggest, most high-profile super-powered threats. For BAB to tackle that stuff, he probably calls his pals in the Dawn Patrol, Midnight Squad, or Phalanx. The guy has been around and he's worked with all those groups.

Yeah but what if you take both at the same time? Because I'm thinking you'll either look like:

    A) A striped, holiday-themed troll.
    B) A big, mean poopturd.

Edit: Okay, for anyone scratching their head, green and orange/red would make something approximating brown or black. :P

I read the Comic Vine site almost every day.

So now we have a conundrum! Do we take Positron's word over all the mounting evidence to the contrary?

THAT, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN AND ZOMBIES AND ROBOTS AND ALIENS, IS THE QUESTION PUT FORTH BEFORE US THIS VERY DAY!!!

Well, to every fan's credit, this really depends on who you run with in-game. On Virtue, even many of the most light-hearted RPers I know read and loved the comics. I know this because the subject comes up every so often while discussing the lore. Over a nice cup of tea, of course. /emote teabag.
  17. Just wanted to add that the subject for this thread isn't very descriptive, Riptide. "Confirmed: BAB not a Freedom Phalanx member" will get you more clicks.

Interesting thought. What are the differences between the two forms of dyne?

The Regulators may not exist anymore. But that's something else that may have been an assumed fact, I don't know.

As long as you're at it, take a look at the Wiki's page for the Regulators. Scroll down to the "Present Day" section, which states that BAB has become a member of the Freedom Phalanx, and that the Regulators are believed to be dead or disbanded by now.

The post here summed up my thoughts on BAB's super group status, until now that is. I stand corrected (along with a few other people). Thanks for the detective work, Riptide.

It's better to know, I guess....

The journey is more important than the destination.

If you put all of your focus on "leveling up" then you will miss 90% of what makes this game special. There are only so many opportunities to have a "sovereign experience", meaning a first time to experience something in the game.

Treasure them. Take your time. Talk to your contacts. Read the mission text. Don't jump into 8-man groups clearing the sewers and power-leveling to level 50. There's nothing there waiting for you. Well, nowadays, there are incarnates, but even that won't actually mean anything except a whole lot of grinding if you have ignored the entire game in order to get there.

Do your missions. Follow the story arcs. Do your task forces at your level range when you are the right level to do them. The story of Paragon City is YOUR story - the story of your progress from new hero to Hero of the City. Make the most of it and learn the stories of the city. Later, you can make alts and do farming, or bank missions, or whatever. On your first character or two, savor the experience of earning your first cape; completing your first task force; defeating your first arch-villain.

You only get one chance to have a first experience. Make the most of it.
Awesome post. This has been the most important thing for me. It's why I'm here. I'm a sucker for a good story. City of Heroes has lots of good stories. Oftentimes my characters play the central roles. Sometimes I'm more in the mood to play a supporting role, letting other heroes feel like the stars. Sometimes I'm the architect of the stories. This game is full of unbelievably entertaining and engrossing experiences, but you've got to let yourself experience them. Just want to hop in and grind to 50? Okay, it's your loss. (It took me a year and a half to get to my first 50, and I know I had a heck of a lot more fun on that character than any one-week power-leveler.)

This is why I have been snatching up all the packs over the past few months, usually one or two packs per pay period. I work it in alongside my comic book budget. Don't laugh, but previous to the announcement of Freedom, I always lagged behind on Booster Pack purchases, because I sort of enjoyed knowing there were always two or three more packs if I got in the mood to do some fashion shopping for my characters. I didn't want to be caught up. I guess I felt it'd be like walking into my local comic book store one month and not seeing anything new to buy. That would suck more than knowing I owned everything in the comic book store.

Anyway, as of a week ago, I now own every booster pack, expansion, and even a few rarer codes from collector's editions on Amazon (and some contests and giveaways). I've only been playing for two years, but I love this game so much. So today's Paragon Market announcement made me very happy. Very cool to see all the new stuff waiting for me to click on it and buy it, especially the Time Manipulation set and extra costume slots.

People around here can be a bit snippy. Don't let it discourage you too much. Don't let it turn you snippy. I've been in your shoes, oh boy, have I been in your shoes. I tell a lot of jokes, bad jokes mostly. People laugh (mostly), I attribute it to timing and delivery. But there have been plenty of silent stares, and some awkward, embarrassing moments. Not all in the same week (not this week anyway), I mean just throughout my life. There are certain moments from my life that still make me cringe ten years later. (I'm of the opinion that you haven't lived enough if you don't have a few of those.) You can usually save yourself with a little self-deprecation, if you do it before they dog-pile you. Telling good jokes is a valuable skill, but recovering from poorly delivered jokes is a fracking art.

FYI, I emboldened the most important part.

Basically, heh. Except there's no Atlas High School, however I did see a Steele Canyon High School, but it's in California. (Not sure if you can "create" new institutions in the listing.)

I set up an email account for Captain-Electric on Gmail (for added security, I used the name of another pseudonym I have used in MMORPGs). Then when I signed up on Facebook I proudly told it my first and last name (Captain Electric), to which it promptly called shenanigans. So I opted to use Captain-Electric's in-character secret identity, Elliot Warner. (Shhh. Don't tell anyone.) According to its friend recommendations, Facebook has no idea who the real me is.

Do I see this as gaming the system, just for a code? Heck no! If any of you have City of Heroes characters with Facebook pages, feel free to add Ellio-- er, Captain-Electric! (However you do that on there.) I've always kind of wanted to play around with Facebook, but because of privacy concerns, this is the perfect occasion for the perfect compromise.

    Edit: A deluge of Captain Picard-inspired characters in 3, 2, 1....
