Those who have said the war's not over are correct. But if you signed a petition, sent an email to Congress, blacked out a website or otherwise spread awareness, you've helped win a battle. That's how wars get won.

If you didn't do any of those things, you'll get your chance. If the war never ends, then we'll have a lot of battles to win. But look around you, at all your favorite online games, communities, devices, educational aids, and so on. We own our Internet. For many of us, it is a substantial chunk of our lives. For both work, convenience and play, it's made our lives better. City of Heroes, a huge collection of original player-made content, thrives in this digital environment. The entertainment industry wants it to end.
  2. Samuraiko's additional ending cut scene, for those of you who didn't see her post in the multimedia fan creation forum. I think of it as what happened in the seconds before my team and I showed up (we didn't leave his body).

Also check out my blurry new forum avatar, I used MS Paint to make a glowing Arachnos symbol on the ground look like an American flag.

Just beware if you're an Android user, you can't read Marvel comics on your Comixology app (only on PC and iDevices). They'll never show up in your library if you're logged in with your phone/tablet. If you want to read Marvel comics on Android, you have to buy them on the Marvel Comics Android app-- a separate app that uses Comixology's UI but has Marvel's branding, look and feel.

I even have a feeling Marvel's app uses Comixology's same servers, and they're just arbitrarily making us split our collections up.

No big deal I guess, except for when sales like this come along. The other day, I absentmindedly bought a Marvel comic on Comixology with my PC, and then later in the day remembered I couldn't read it from my phone.
  4. Several other popular MMO news sites have also mentioned it.

Mr. Chairman, you and your cronies are ten kinds of wrong. And one day, the good guys will see to it that people like you are labeled as the criminals you are.

  7. From my perspective, Statesman was "hurling himself at the mothership again." The biggest trap was Statesman's own arrogance. And that's not smack talk, this is a loss for me, but I prefer my characters to be "real" to me, and that means flawed. Statesman did what Statesman does, till the end. Salute! YMMV. And I'm sad not everyone enjoyed themselves; I wish I could bottle it up!
  8. If you're an RPer and have the opportunity to do this IC, take it. It will be all the more epic. After a bit of fruitless attempts at revival, and shouting and yelling at the sky (just a little bit--we weren't that bad), and swearing murderous revenge, the eight of us came to our senses and committed to filling Statesman's shoes and upholding his principles. Years ago my namesake Captain-Electric was sort of "cursed" with a permanent sense of optimism after his science accident, so he doesn't often experience misery, but even he was grief stricken. One member of the team planted his shield in the ground where Statesman had fallen and laser-engraved a "last stand" message on it. Then Captain-Electric used his powers to solder it permanently to the earth and stone.

Then I took off my cape and draped it over the shield. Yes, I was prepared! Ha!

Some people hated it. I'm not speaking for them. I'm speaking for me, and what I observed in my SG's reactions. We were moved by it. Some members even became teary eyed! I don't know about epic, but I don't believe "epic" was the intention (that's for later ), but it was pretty damn moving. (DISCLAIMER: IN MY OPINION!)
  9. Constructive feedback is good-- which includes constructive criticism. I'm sure I'll have more constructive feedback as time goes on. But the game still feels new, fresh and exciting for me...I may as well have started playing yesterday in that regard. How am I supposed to feel about it? For several years before I came to City of Heroes, about a decade actually, I wasn't able to stick with an MMO for more than three months. Two years into my subscription here, and I'm still moving through new storylines (written years ago for most of you) and major story arcs, still finding new things to like about old ones (old to me means I did it last year ), still smiling at their punchlines, still stumbling into new mission maps, still looking forward to never-before-seen zones, still meeting the most awesome teammates I've ever had the pleasure of getting to know, and still being surprised and impressed by player creations (I came in because of Issue 14, so it's been there since the start for me).

If loving City of Heroes is wrong, THEN I DON'T WANT TO BE RIGHT!!!

The worst part of it, for me, is the skill I've had to develop for "treading lightly" on the forums, a landmine field filled with spoilers; like a kind of "peripheral reading" Spider-sense, I'm getting better at knowing when to look away from a sentence or paragraph before I've read too much. Interestingly enough, I've begun to notice that it's often the extreme cynics who don't mind spoiling the game for everyone else--and will even make a special effort to do so--almost like they're jealous of other peoples ability to find joy in something. They're probably Redside.

(Kidding about that last part, I have a few Redside characters now, even if I can't play there for very long stretches at a time. )

Pandora's Box obviously exacerbated Primal Earth's magical potency for its denizens, but it's established in some story arcs that Primal Earth sits at a nexus (if not THE nexus) of a vast group of habitable dimensions, and that as the core of that group, the abundance of magic energy on Primal Earth has always been pretty WTFBBQ.

(If I'm wrong about any detail, a fact-check from an old hand is always welcome/appreciated.)

I've never stopped to see things from that angle, but I'm not going to argue with it. Pandora's Box may have indeed unleashed a millennium of creative energy upon humanity all at once, BUT there had to also have been something within humanity that was capable of receiving and manipulating that energy--I believe that is the part that your interpretation focuses on. And in your defense, clearly, the lore doesn't tell us which was the greater portion of the equation--the power unleashed by Pandora's Box or our ability to channel and manipulate it. They key here is that the lore specifically refers to it as an unleashing of "creative energy," and that terminology implies a storehouse of human creativity, not some kind of energy that is normally external to the human experience.
  13. I know this is short notice but if you like to read Comixology comics on your PC or phone/tablet device, you've still got a few hours left.

The banner says "Marvel Mondays," so maybe they're doing this every Monday, but I'm not sure if the prices will be this low.
  14. P.S. I should add that if it were later and I didn't suspect this had too many readers, and if I hadn't received a phone call when posting this, it would have been one of the dozens and dozens of posts I've deleted right after making it. I really hate getting into personal arguments about personal opinions on the Internet. It always takes everyone's eye off the ball and that's never a good thing for a discussion.

I prefer to know when I'm wrong, because it's better to be on the same page with reality. So, as I'm likely to do, I went back over this page a second time and reread, and reconsidered all the main points being made against stuff me and others had written. And I'm honestly relieved to say I'm coming up dry this time. An elephant in the room needs to be necessarily large for people to eventually notice it, Scarlet Shocker, and I haven't seen many people at all noticing Matt Miller's hubristic love affair with Positron. I can say with a complete lack of sarcasm that I'm sorry you're not enjoying the story these days, but it almost feels like you're looking as hard as you can for things not to like. Well, you'll always find them, if that's your attitude. You're an eloquent writer, but it's not confidence-inspiring that you resorted to calling names when your worry about a classic redemption story was deflated.

It's one thing to tell the writers what you're looking for (feedback is awesome), but when the quality of your feedback has spiraled to the point of--

    Quote:
the content, the stories that make this game so great have crashed in quality.
Congratulations, you've now entered the realm of utterly unconstructive feedback. As much as critics like [CENSORED] and [CENSORED] and [CENSORED] are called big grumps around here (resisting the urge to name names, but it's never hard to guess), they back their criticisms up with "But how about this idea?" every single time.

I'm going to re-quote something you said earlier because it's something I can't argue with, the previous non-linearity of Origins compared to the restriction on creative freedom presented to us by the evolution of "The Well" storyline--

    Quote:

Hell, Scarlet Shocker is an all electric blaster of natural origin and after almost six years I still don't have a credible explanation for that one, but it just simply works! If you ask her she'll probably shrug and simply say "I somehow manage to harness the ambient electricity in the atmosphere and direct it in a meaningful way - I don't much worry about the science behind it." And during her career, she's teamed with aliens, barbarians from alternate dimensions, sentient goo in an encounter suit, mighty wizards and escaped convicts - to name but a few. Origin has been a really useful tool that you could invest as much, or as little, in as you like. But now, the Incarnate line nails you down to a very specific set of rules that limit the players imagination and ability to interact within the game environment - it's gone from the examples above to "I've got this insane puddle in my head that lends me some of its powers and though I don't trust it, or like it, I've got to go with it just to continue progressing."
YES, give us back the ability to stay within canon AND write our own godlike power origins.

We definitely disagree about the quality of the writing. I think the writing is great in older arcs (many of which are "new" to me, as I'm just now stumbling into them), and I love how the devs liked to build all the different storylines into BIG REVEALS. But I also think the writing is great in newer content. It's different, that's for sure, but in some places more mature. So I guess some people have one opinion and some others have another. Big shocker.

I'm seeing some interest in such a set, but overall, my read is that it appears to be a lower priority than "old school" tights.
I'm divided--one might even say I'm subdivided. But let's just be practical about this. Both sets need to happen. You know it, deep down, Noble Savage! The wild success of the Ultimate Marvel franchise and Marvel Studios movies is testament to the fact that you can make super heroes look good in any medium when you've got great design, even live action. On the other hand, over 75 years of classic comic book spandex is a nice little testament, too. Nuff said!

Wing Leader, I hate to argue with a fellow man in stripes (plus you're always full of awesome comic book-y ideas for the game ) but you know better than to argue an exception as if it were a rule.

And anyway, the Fifth Column got an issue in their honor (Issue 15, although "honor" probably isn't the right word for them hehe), which included two task forces! It's regrettable what happened to them back in the day (was before my time), but I've heard lots of rumors that politics (as in correctness) were involved, and sales in Germany or something. Like I said, rumors. Would be nice to have a fact-check, actually. But more to the point, content for them is demanded a lot and I think I remember hearing somewhere that more content was in the pipeline.

P.S. I didn't mean to gloss over your points about Rularuu, but I haven't gotten to that stuff yet. :P

P.P.S. Also not ignoring your post Scarlet [fellow] Shocker but I think GG said it better than I could.

When they made metallic parts more reflective during Issue 17 (April 2010), they removed the old metallic parts which looked a lot different-- and not in a bad way, just different. The metallic gloves and boots clashed so badly with the rest of an outfit, I had to completely re-envision one of my characters. Now, I made the whole thing into an opportunity and now he looks even better. But it doesn't mean I'd like that to happen every time these revamps occur. It can be great fun to re-envision a character, but being told you have to for such an arbitrary reason could suck the fun right out of it after several times. I can't speak from experience, but I'm sure there are some readers here who can.

On the other hand, I think of new costume parts as a fracking awesome gift when they come along, and if, for some reason, replacements had to occur, then I would definitely encourage the devs to do it-- and I'd gladly deal with it, and find ways to make the change a positive one for myself. Things change, that's life! But "stealth-changes" in this category put a frown on my [otherwise completely heroic] face, and if it doesn't have to happen, I'd rather it not!
  21. A few points that come to mind whenever I see these worries.

This also has something to do with limited resources. The devs can't work on a dozen top enemy groups at once if they really want to shine the spotlight on them. They have to decide what to spend their resources on. Resources include available artists and writers and programmers and team leads, and hours available to be worked. This isn't me knowing how the industry works, it's me using my brain.

It also has something to do with "darned if they do, darned if they don't." Would we all be happier if they solely focused on Arachnos for several issues? No. Would we all be happier if they focused on different "big-time" enemies for several issues at a time? No. So there you have it. They can't make us all happy.

It also has something to do with myopia. For me, Arachnos hasn't gone anywhere. Neither have the Rikti. And my namesake character is just now getting into the Portal Corp content for the first time. I love how I've been playing for two years and still firmly consider myself a newbie. There are seven years worth of content in this game, and it feels like it. There is still so much I haven't seen. I realize that puts me in an enviable position compared to some of you, but I'm not gloating. I'm pointing out that old content doesn't disappear when new content is introduced.

I've never had the impression that "OMG they're forgetting about the XYZ!" Unlike Marvel Comics, Paragon Studios doesn't have a gazillion writers and artists working on a gazillion interrelated and separate titles all at the same time. Of course, if NCSoft wanted to put up the money to make this game more like that, I'd be one happy paying customer. But that's not how the cookie crumbles, or something....

Noble Savage, seeing these super hero-y things being brought up for discussion probably makes me one of your top happiest customers. I'm watching and liking what I'm reading; But please-pretty-please remember that no one here is asking ya'll for replacements...we're asking for additional options. Perhaps that's what you intend already. But the word "revamp" worries me a little--I now know what it's like to have to redo a favorite character of mine because his parts have been "stealth-replaced" by shinier, newer [but different] parts. I know there are players out there who can't fiddle with some of their characters at all or else those characters will lose parts that are no longer available in the editor.

The costume parts that are available already are awesome. This game is aging well because its art direction is the finest in the industry, which is why you're still head and shoulders above your "shinier, newer" competition's eye-bleedingly exaggerated and inconsistent and non-immersive art direction (I could go on...).

IMO, it's all about respecting the other players leadership style. If we do that, more than likely they'll respect your style too and will follow that when you are leading.

There's the old saying, "When you're in Rome, do as the Romans do." In its original form it actually went, "If you were in Rome, live in the Roman way; if you are elsewhere, live as they do there." So thanks for the heads up about Protector. I know--from some experience--that on Virtue, if you run with the Action-RP crowd (as opposed to the Standing-Around-Bars crowd ), and you run over absentmindedly and click on a glowy, you're likely to find everyone on the team crowding around, expectantly asking, "So what'd you find in the box, Zaloopa?" Many (not all) team leaders will be impressed if you answer eloquently in a way that describes the clue you've picked up AND shows off your IC chops, and likely won't mind you clicking on glowies after that. But if you were to answer back, "stuff lolz, go go go!!" you'd basically be crapping all over the team's idea of fun, and you might not find yourself teaming with them again.
  25. GG is awesome, I saw her fly right through a wall of Hamidon seeds at the Praetorian invasion, destroying everything in a single bound. It was a moment that would have made both Statesman and Chuck Norris proud. The wall then fell on me and a dozen other heroes, killing us instantly. Later, at the hospital, I bought us all a round of ice cream and we watched the news unfold on TV from our hospital beds.

More on topic, I never imagined that Paragon Studios would use this as an opportunity to erase Statesman's iconic imagery from the game, not least because Statesman's death should make him even more of an icon. I would have been disappointed if we DIDN'T see his image plastered on Issue 22's cover! With respect to this, I hope he gets a statue not unlike Atlas Square's or Blyde Square's behemoth memorials. I doubt that will happen, but Statesman has earned that much. A meager statue in a quiet park, I think not! Likewise, I will be disappointed if NPCs across Paragon City simply fall silent about Statesman, as present-tense acknowledgements of his existence are gradually removed from the game. I hope, instead, that NPCs speak of him in the past tense with reverie-- or gloating satisfaction, whichever is more appropriate for particular NPCs.

Like others, I have wondered if Statesman's fate was wrapped up somehow OOC--in his relation to Jack Emmert. I wondered if this would eventually doom him even before his death became an issue, no pun intended. My roommate could vouch for me, if he ever came to the forums--I called his death several months ago. Of course, if this were the case, the devs would never tell us, so we'll never know. But me, I hope it's not the case, because it would be no different than killing off any long-lived comic book character simply because people disliked that character's original writer. Statesman has passed through numerous creative hands now, and because of that--and like any comic book character--he's had his moments, good and worse. To attribute Statesman solely to Emmert this late in the game is shortsighted. He is no more solely the product of Emmert than Spider-Man is solely the product of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

And I hope the above suspicions aren't true, because I hope he returns some day. Then I'll know we're really playing in a comic book universe. Though I'm a fan of Statesman (the character), I'm glad he's dying, from a story-telling perspective. If there was ever a time to do it, now's the time, right before it seems like the heroes of Paragon would need him the most. Why's that? The answer, I suspect, is because Statesman isn't the main character of this story (or collection of stories).

    That's right, folks. I am.
