  1. I realize that your job is to attend to the forest and not each tree. I also think you do a fantastic job. I spent a few years writing for public relations departments, so I also understand how such a granular approach to the game's public image would have all the effect of one tree being petted in the Amazon (everyone picture Zwillinger petting a tree ).

What surprised me was having new knowledge that there is zero communication between your realm and theirs. I'm getting the image of an NCSoft CS manager, who has little or no experience with City of Heroes, making a decision that creates a small mess on your side of the street; a mess like now.
  2. I love teaming. I love soloing. I team up to hang out with friends, for more epic action and rewards, to feel like I'm taking the fight to threats that no single hero should face alone. I solo to slow down, to clear my head, to explore the world and its stories, and to immerse my characters in their own adventures--things which are their own rewards. Sound familiar? No? Then maybe you don't read comic books. Because that's kind of how a comic book super hero's life often plays out.

Some of my characters are street-level crime fighters. Others are near godlike. It's normal for me to solo a big story arc with a godlike character, when I might grab a team for that same arc on a crime-fighter character--even if the crime-fighter character was the more effective build mechanically. So, I can hear someone asking, what if I feel like teaming on a godlike character, on an minor arc? I'll find an excuse, smartypants.

People who see City of Heroes as a just a fun pile of rewards and game mechanics will not be able to relate to what I'm getting at. I understand what kind of game I'm playing, and I understand why they've prioritized raid-style mechanics for Incarnates. But Paragon Studios knows that me and others like me are here, and they're throwing us a bone. I'm satisfied with the pace at which they seem to be doing it. It's none of my business if a small portion of the playerbase is actively opposed to about 50% of the way I approach my gameplay. We all have a right to our opinions, but it doesn't change what I like, and it isn't preventing Paragon Studios from delivering it shortly.
  3. I think some Google wizards were working on face recognition algorithms that could spot more attractive faces according to a bunch of polls.

Since I don't think that's in the cards, Codewalker would have to put a clickable hotness 1-5 rating on every picture, so that we could then sort by hotness according to the polls. He could make a page listing for hot people and hide results for anything below a 5, so that hot people would feel flattered if they were totally hot, but would not be included in the ratings at all if they were not.

    I'm joking.

Virtue. I clicked like 50 pages back in the latest updates for Virtue, before giving up. And admittedly, I didn't do searches for every global friend; mostly just those that wouldn't be creeped out if I sent them a link to a picture of their face with a twirly mustache, or a third eye or something. I don't want to ask my friends if they're on there, I want to surprise them. Hee hee.

And I disagree with Zombie Man, when I was clicking back, I saw a few attractive faces. But come on, this isn't Hot or Not. I'm not going to be friends with someone based on that.

This has sometimes been something I've wondered about: How much of Community Relations actually involves matters related to the in-game community? I've mentioned before how, out of my big global list of very active friends, I've never seen any of them on the forums. And many of the most vocal forum posters have occasionally admitted in their posts that they rarely log into the game during long stretches of time. Do you know where most of my friends find out about upcoming issues, new items on the market, and other new content? Me.

Zwillinger, player petitions are a customer service issue, but the fact that you have no involvement in that process from a community relations position, is a fact that ought to be changed. The game servers are the REAL community.
  6. You calling me ugly, you smelly zombie?!
  7. No one I actually play the game with has a Faces account, sad face. I had my Photoshop readied with an arsenal of twirly mustaches!!!

And my only Faces friend is Maverick X. I have no idea who he is, or how he got on my friends list, but he seems like one popular dude. For some reason I want to call him Tom.

Right, it's just that I'm not sure if that's the case anymore. Without giving them something to file during this new process that's been added, I'm concerned that the incident might not get filed in the proper way. Maybe someone with inside knowledge could speak up about this part.

I'm not arguing, I know this is frustrating. But I fully intend to get around the problem of encroachment it might present us with at times, if it means filing a helpful petition.
  9. Just want to add, the idea behind my suggestion is to "hit all the marks" of a successful petition, allowing it to be forwarded on. The in-game GMs most likely aren't reading your answers anyway, unless it's a harassment petition. You just want to make sure your petition gets filed. Without scrolling back through your own chat logs, your opening statement could still briefly reiterate the incident in a sentence or two. After that, each answer could just be a simple form response, made to satisfy the responding GM's requirement of 'VIP answered my text with some text'.
  10. The degree of your participation in the petitioning process is entirely up to you, as the player and VIP. So this is no reason to fully stop participating in a collective process of reporting that has improved on the game for years. It only makes you sound just as unreasonable, and it prevents your protestation from ever being heard.

It is entirely acceptable to create a form response of your own for these situations, as long as that form response is informative (generally speaking) and polite. After all, you may be in the middle of a trial when a GM responds to a simple IP violation petition. Or you may simply have very limited time to play that day. Save any passive aggressive childishness for General Forum posts, and email a polite form response to your global email so that you can copy and paste from it.

Kindly remind GMs that they have access to your chat logs, and invite them to use that valuable resource, if they choose. Politely decline to participate further in the petitioning process, and thank them. Cut off responding after pasting something like this, "I trust you'll respect that my playing time is valuable to me, and thank you for allowing me to assist you in a limited manner this evening."

If any staff read this, please understand that I characteristically wouldn't suggest head-butting the policies of GMs that have worked so well with me on countless occasions. However, my fear in this case is that you may be unintentionally warding VIPs away from filing petitions whatsoever. To the contrary, I do not plan to cease filing petitions, especially if I think I might be helping to improve the game. My suggestion above provides a way for us both to communicate with each other politely and efficiently, but with as little real human interaction as possible.
  11. Yay I finally have a Faces.

Just want to add, the big plus for me, when it comes to sites like Amazon On Demand and YouTube Movies, is that I can rent movies and shows piecemeal. I don't like to subscribe to services, because I don't watch much TV. I read books and play City of Heroes for entertainment usually.

I love watching a movie or digging my way through a season of a good show occasionally, but if I subscribed to some service like Amazon Prime Instant Video or Netflix, weeks or in some cases months might go by when I was simply throwing away money. By the way Prime Instant Video has a free month trial.

I'm thinking about getting Amazon Prime as that sounds like an awesome deal... $80/year for access to their library, but I don't know quite what that means. Is it all their stuff they have that they can stream or just a fraction.
Go to Amazon and click on Prime Instant Video in the top-left, then look over the vast black hole of inescapably awesome entertainment waiting to suck you in. You want to check and make sure your favorite shows are all in there, but given Amazon's wide reach, there's a strong likelihood they will be. Amazon is usually my first stop these days if I'm renting a movie on my computer (Click on "Learn More" at the top-right of the Prime Instant Video page to figure out how to get it on various devices or your TV).

Hulu has commercials but I watch some TV shows there.

And there's YouTube Movies, a much unsung department of YouTube, but always chock-full of lowered prices for some movies, and you can expect good quality.

There's also the movies section of your Android market if you have a phone or tablet.

Oh, almost forgot, there's also Vudu.com--has a good reputation, but only provides movies, and I've never personally tried it (I hear the prices are good).

Oh, and there's iTunes, if you love being gouged.

Hulu is legit. It's a joint venture of network giants like Universal, Fox and Disney. Really something quite extraordinary--something I expected to see, but not as soon as I did. I've been using it for a couple of years. Hulu Plus offers you a larger collection of shows and movies, and deeper backlogs.

If you don't mind paying for your entertainment, there's also Amazon on Demand for shows and movies. The prices are great.

I stopped pirating entertainment a few years ago. I had promised myself from the beginning that if the corporations ever made their offerings as easy and convenient as the pirate nodes did--and stopped trying to take overzealous liberties with my personal property--then I would start playing fair with them. I stuck to my word, and pay for my entertainment now. Generally, I'm happy with the pricing of entertainment via the web, too. I've never even been a TV cable subscriber.

    Grapple Swing

I would settle for a grappling-hook gun emote.

Fire your fake grappling-hook gun. A fake swing line shoots off into the night or blue yonder (a special effect that fades after a second or two). Toggle Super Leap and "be pulled away by your grappling line, nudge wink."

As people have illustrated for me, it's the closest you'll likely ever get to a swing power in this game. So I've asked people in-game if they'd buy this silly emote. People tend to say yes. Wipe that surprised look off your face. People bought the dance party pack. They will buy this.

Its only potential drawback is that it could backfire--in the public relations sense. Magazine reviewers might mock the feature while comparing and contrasting it with the competition's genuine offerings. It might be something to poke fun at. Or, I might just be over-thinking it.

I am subscribed to many global channels on Virtue and haven't heard a negative word yet in-game (I played for 3 hours tonight). Heard lots people talking about what they got in their packs, happy about the costume piece drops, and especially freaking out on some of the enhancements. Not too different from late last night when they hit the market.

    Baseball Cards

Posi said in one of their morning talks not to expect something like this, after "islands of content", separate from the bulk of the game, like the arenas, didn't see as much action as the devs had hoped by their huge investment. Some people are calling the super packs a mini-game, but it's a mini-game that feed directly into the bulk of the game.

Not to shoot you down, I was one of the first people to shout out with this idea in an earlier thread; but I understand their position and agree with it.

  19. Inspired by the OP who is OBVIOUSLY having her brains eaten!
  20. One time on a crowded weekend night, me and some pals saw a woman slow-walk from one end of Pocket D's dance floor to the other, and then leave. She looked completely naked. As naked as a Barbie doll, anyway. Naturally, we were all flabbergasted and I did the only thing a guy should do in that situation. I ran to Trina the Body Sculptress and messed around.

I never actually appeared in the game naked, but I could. Knowing is half the battle.

    Anyway, carry on.

The night before Galaxy went away, me and my friends RPed through an AE arc one of us wrote as a lead-up to Issue 21 (we even got a dev to join us and they loved it, but they didn't RP ). At the end, everyone was real sad. During the course of the arc, we all ended up with IC knowledge of the impending strike, just a couple of hours away. There was only time to evacuate our own loved ones who lived or worked in Galaxy, so that's what we did ICly. (Mass district-wide panic and limited War Wall exits don't mix very well.)

But later on, I invited a few of those teammates to come to Atlas. I showed them up to the domed garden, and explained to them how one of my characters (Gravity/Force Field controller) had strained her powers to the limit: she had bubbled a gigantic chunk of Gemini Park, and teleported it into the specially prepared dome.

I don't normally take such liberties with the game world (in your version of City, something else happened maybe), but this was isolated to my circle of friends, and it was fun and therapeutic for them. So I did it.

Somewhere deep down, you know that it takes far less development time to port male costumes to females; and you know that making some pathetically correct stab at equality (i.e. a matching number of completely new parts for us guys) would amount to a greater strain on resources. But that wouldn't actually happen. What would happen is that the devs would simply take all of our toys away, and go for homogeneously equal options for both genders. It almost seemed like things were going to swing that way, if you were keeping up with that Gunslinger thread, according to Zwillinger's initial comments before Noble Savage stepped in. You should be glad they didn't.

Think about this. If men could run around in women's clothing, I guess none of us would be arguing right now. Now, if you're not exactly into that, then I'm with you, bro. But at least I'll be open and honest about why women have the advantage here.

P.S. Don't forget about that second body type we have.

Don't feel that way. I have a theory that subsequent packs are going to contain more ultra-rare vanity items. That way, everyone who buys super packs will likely end up with something that not too many other people have. I think that's great (hint devs hint ). My only suggestion for the devs is to allow ultra-rare vanity items to be traded for other ultra-rare vanity items of the same degree of odds.

But beyond that, you played the game, just like the rest of us who bought super packs (considering the testing you did on Beta, perhaps fate is smiling on you. ). Personally, anyone who seriously calls me a jerk for using an ultra-rare vanity item won't get a single reply, they'll just be placed on /ignore.

Subsequent posters have delved into this question more than I wish to (I hate arguing on the Internet). My personal opinion is that this isn't about the costume set's merits. It's about the amount of money on CoH: Freedom's real, actual price tag. You're talking about the trees, I'm talking about the forest. The two big factors here are, (1) They've got to find ways to encourage us to pay the full amount on that price tag, or the consequence is having resources taken away. And, (2) No one but Paragon Studios knows exactly what that price tag says.

If they slapped the full amount of that price tag solely onto the Elemental Costume set, trust me, you couldn't afford it.

It should be no surprise that many players reacted unfavorably to their announcement and are still dissatisfied with them after the devs compromised on a couple of points.

Implementing games of chance in the business plan only five months after CoH Freedom's launch suggests that early on Paragon Studios was planning how to maximize revenue from big spenders, what casinos call "whales". (The players who were consulted about pre-alpha Freedom have confirmed Super Packs were part of the program.) It has nothing to do with how profitable Freedom's launch was or how well Paragon Studios' fourth quarter performed.

As long as F2P is synonymous with "soaking the players" under the pretext of fiscal responsibility, the business model is going to have a bad reputation.
