I live in Richmond where the Skating Oval sits and I would love to do some skiing on the slopes too! Sadly, the IOC is rabid about their branding and IP, so if they started the Winter Event up again they would probably be sued blind

Halloo!
You mentioned you like Trollers and Fenders so I was thinking that red-side you would probably enjoy Doms, Masterminds, and possibly Corruptors. My fave 50 is a Troller and I solo'ed him (mostly) and loved every minute of it. When I was deciding on builds for my villains I had read on the forums that Doms were weaksauce but when I took my new Earth/Elec out for a test-drive I loved it. I gotta say Domination-building is a fun little mini-game unto itself.

Thanks for all the welcomes back ( or is that welcome backs? damn pluralization). It feels darn good to be back in a game that makes sense. Which reminds me, the rather slap-sticky humour over there was good for awhile but it just never let up, there was zero seriousness which certainly kills any tension or drama. Here if I want a serious mission there is ample opportunity, and if I want silly there's always the Spring Fling etc.
To the poster that mentioned they wanted to try STO, the real problem there is that it is missing the "feel" of Star Trek. Where are my "alien civilizations", my "strange new worlds"? And you are definitely going where many men, women, children, and aliens have gone before. To be honest if they had called it Babylon 5 it would have made more sense (and I would have definitely played it then).
-
Quote:Good point. Though wish I could have afforded to keep paying for this one at the same time (raising kids ain't cheap ya-know). Another funny story, when I filled out my exit survey for the game there was a question like "what would bring you back?" My replay was either COH2 or a new graphics engine, and now coincidentally...Hey, if you didn't try other products, you wouldn't be able to appreciate how superior this one is.

See what I mean about the tone of the forums here vs. there?
Thanks guys!
Too bad about the free GR rumour but I still get free character transfers for the rest of the month and a bunch of new-ish power sets to play with (YAY Elec Melee!). -
Thanks for that Zyphoid. Also a funny story, within 2 minutes of logging in the first time an old SG-mate msged me and turns out he left all my stuff in our base and all my heroes were still members *BG*. Now that's a community!

I was a fool. What was I thinking? I feel so tawdry.
I left here back in September for the brand-new shiny. I feel so soiled. That game...that game. It's like they took every gaming methodology in CoX and thought it would be a good idea to do the exact opposite. The commonality stops at the costume creator.
There was a reason that open power selection was dropped early in CoH's development because everyone ended up with similar OP builds. Hey guess what! That is exactly what happened in CO (I just wish I had realized it sooner, what a wasted 4 months....). There are a select few powers that work fantastic that everyone takes, ironically Regen is one of them (some things never change). But since its only a single power to nerf it would be to kill it. When a nerf hits a set here they can always balance with a buff to a different power in the set so the character isn't completely screwed.
Plus, they reversed the power dynamics so that to choose melee is to suffer constant defeats while range rules the roost. Here range is actually a defense because ranged attacks tend to be weaker than melee. But since heroes all gain health per level based off of their stats rather than their power sets you can have a melee-type that is significantly weaker than a ranged-type. It also doesn't help that the combat is twitch-based so if you are closer you get hit more which makes melee even worse. Thank god for the RNG here!
Most missions are open-world, the exact opposite of this wonderful game. I guess they wanted the world to look more active and dynamic, yet the missions become very samey very quickly because the environment and other heroes running around limits the mission structure.
Teaming functionality here is intuitive and very easy (barring a few minor tweaks). There its mostly just teaming with passing heroes for the occasional difficult encounter and then you go your separate ways.
Rather than a number of unique servers they have one server that is split into instances. This removes the flavour of separate communities since everybody smears together. I like the fact that Freedom is the busy server I can team on, that Virtue is a RP server when I feel dramatic, that Protector is my nice quiet west coast server for soloing. What's the difference between Instance #1 and Instance #2? Yeah I can't tell either.
And finally, the forums over there are sooo negative and toxic. There is simply no art at all to the debates. Whereas here I can read pages and pages of debates about XP curves, relative power comparisons, and the lack of love for villains (well at least until GR). Over there its hatred for the devs, hatred for the fanbois, hatred for the haters, etc etc etc. Funny thing is that the few forumites from here that I see over there are the most reasonable voices. And yes I mean even those that get harassed here (I'm looking at you Perfect_Pain).
I may not be able to run in UM mode with my 18 month old PC (only an nVidia8500 GT) but at least I can run at full graphics now with zero lag (and it looks damn good). Over there if I ran at full character detail I would invariably lag-die at least every few minutes, so the only way to run lag-free was to jack the graphics down to the point where it looked worse than running in low graphics here.
The finally straw for me was when it was decided that the first pay expansion was going to have very little to it. No point getting into details. But the only paid expansion here was an expandalone, and now I have read a few posts that GR maybe free?(Please correct me if I am wrong. I just gotta know!) I cannot think of a more opposite approach to promoting the health and popularity of your game.
I'd just like to apologize to the Devs here for the stupid decision to give my money to that lame game. I did pay for it by missing out on the loyalty badges and the 66 and 69-month badges *deep deep sigh*, that is my punishment and I accept it.
I never meant to rant on and on but after being back for 2 days I just had to get this off my chest. And I hope that I haven't broken any forum rules by mentioning "that other game".
P.S. STO sure seemed like just a re-skinning of CO when I played for a bit in the open beta.
P.P.S. Wouldn't it be ironic if I got flamed on these boards for hating CO? -
I have to pick one per side, I just can't narrow it down any more than that
. For heroes it would have to be the always reliable Captain Hit-Guy. His name says it all. He hits guys. A lot. 'Nuff said.
Villain-side it would have to be Professor Unusual, my Bots/Traps MM. -
Why am I getting flashbacks to Flash Gordon?
"Ahhhh! He's Flash!! Saviour of the Universe!"
Oh. That's why.
But seriously, that arc sounds seriously funny. And it makes me want to make a really laaaame arc just so it can be mocked in perpetuity. -

If you get the chance, check out the Rifftrax for Running Man. It's not done by Mike and the Boys, but it's still absolutely amazing. ^_^
Also, "Allow me to reference my previous contention that your weapons against me are without merit!"

Yeah, I did that last week. I had to admit it was damn funny though I didn't remember Running Man having such a bad '80s style infection (ugh). That and Die Hard were good, didn't like the Tron iRiff at all (they kept interrupting each other too much).

Ouch, I had expected JABOSTH but was surprised by the dialogue issues. I guess one man's joke is another man's lame pun
. On the issue of the bosses spawning out of order in the second mission I find that annoying since I had them spawning in the correct order the last time I tested it but that was about 3 weeks ago.
Regarding the use of 5th Column I suggested through dialogue in the first mission that they were simply hired guns for the Crushers (implying how far they have fallen since the Council took over).
It was also explained through dialogue why Enforcer didn't just deal with it himself in the first place; he wanted to make sure you could handle the assault on the Citadel by sending you after the first 2 groups and secondly because he was too out-gunned to do it himself (that's why you find him surrounded at the beginning of the 3rd mission).
And finally, on the issue of plagiarizing, I want to say that I did lift the plot beats but not the specifics from the module, as well as the villains and heroes. I also checked the date of publication and that was 1982... 27 years ago. I felt that since the publisher has been out of business for at least 20 years we weren't going to get a re-issue of the game or module so I thought of it as an homage and a piece of nostalgia for us older gamers ...my mistake evidently
Edit: Having said all of that I don't want to leave the impression of sour grapes. I do still appreciate the time you took to play and review my arc, thank you. And I will also add a story credit to the original module writers in my story synopsis as soon as able to help clarify my inspiration for anyone who plays it from now on. -
<QR>
I felt I better preemptively warn the esteemed Reviewer that my arc is both JABOSTH and also the dreaded 1st part of a 3 arc "arc". I wanted it be similar to well-paced episodic TV/comic so I have a self-contained story in each arc as well as the over-arcing storyline. Depending on your level of like/dis-like of this arc I will submit the next 2 parts for your perusal after you have recovered from this one.

My fave animation bug is the Wile E. Coyote bug: start autorun while in flight, then turn off flight and watch in amazement as you run in place as you plummet to the ground.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Lost yet. That series is using a modified version of Stephen Hawking's time travel hypothesis. Since whatever has happened in the past has already happened if you traveled into the past then you must have already caused what has happened (you know I think I need a new verb tense ;p ). Let me try that again... cause and effect stay consistent because if you travel into the past you are the cause of past events that effect the present (hmmm still doesn't sound right...ah well)
So far in the series I haven't seen any time travel related continuity errors but they do occasionally pass the idiot ball around. -
I got em to 50 in descending order in my sig
. Prime Minister was the 2nd character I made 2 weeks after launch and he hit 50 July 05. Captain was created a week after him and hit 50 6 months later than Prime. And then XP smoothing hit and half debt in mish and my 3rd 50 only took 6 months total. Most of all that was soloing.
-
Got mine on the 16th. I have sooo many lowbie villains that can use this (and yes I can use the temp powers...but this'll be cooler
).
-
I had the same map as the final mish in my 1st arc and was wondering why no one was playing my arc so I and a buddy tried to run it only to get an error message that I had too many Defeats, Ambushes, etc. So I decided to try to edit it but the Error icon was greyed out and I made the mistake of unpublishing and repubbing to try to fix it.
In the end, I lost my original Arc ID and only then finally realizing that the last map had been replaced with a SINGLE room.
Just a request to the Devs, could you please make sure the Error icon lights up when a map gets invalidated?
Ah well, live and learn I guess :/ . -
Good point. After all, why would a criminal want to remember prison?
-
The Zig map also transitions. Which has garnered me a couple complaints from players that couldn't find a boss. And this confused me since I thought most people would have played through Breakout at least once
.
-
On the topic of the side-switching missions I have a masochistic idea I would love to see implemented at the end of the story arc:
You exit the last mish in your original side and a zone-wide system message is fired off stating something to the effect:
"Captain Evil is a turncoat, Lord Recluse orders all villains to hunt him down before he escapes to Paragon!" (the reverse for heroes of course)
Then you have to race to the exit and escape. I'm guessing the last mish will occur in a zone with access to Pocket D depending on the level you run the arc so that you have an easy means of changing over.
There would be no XP for defeating you but there would be a Defeat 10/50/100 Turncoat badge of course. And of course if you do get defeated you would either wake up on the appropriate prison cell map to make the run again or if the Devs are feeling generous you will simply wake up in the appropriate hospital.
I would think its a great capper to the arc and would have a very "The Fugitive / Running Man" feel to it. -
It's my birthday so I thought being humbled by reviewers would be a good present to myself
. My 3 arcs form a trilogy mostly because my use of custom groups filled up my arc files too darn quick. The middle arc is a single mission but I warn that if you can't find all your objectives remember that there is an indoor portion to that map.
I tested the arcs solo with my Ill/TA troller and also duo'ed the first 2 with a L28 tanker and an auto-sk'ed blaster with no problems so it should be challenging but doable by all *crosses fingers*.
*points down at sig* I hope you enjoy 'em. -
