It's one of several "super booster packs" available in the NCSoft Store, each has different add ons to the game and they're $10 each ($9.95 actually, but I call that $10). Buying and applying a booster pack to your account grants all your characters the perks in the pack, each one is different. Costume pieces, additional, usually minor, powers and so forth.

Put simply, is it possible to make a toon too big that seeing everything in a fight is hindered?

The easy answer of course is to just make him smaller but I made him wp/ss and I hate seeing the "average" built toon and trying to imagine him with super strength.
Well, I made the mistake of rolling my Peacebringer up as an 8' tall character; I found that a lot of missions were a huge pain because of that. Any cave mission was an irritation because of the character's size.

YMMV, but I really didn't care for the character's size, unfortunately by the time the problem really sank in to me the character was in his 20's so I just stuck with it and coped. He ended up as my 2nd level 50 character but once the Science pack with the super tailor was released I shrank him down to about 6'6".

If you have the Science booster pack then you can always change your character model so you could try it and see what your experiences are, I found anything much taller than 6'6" irritating in confined maps.

Of course, you won't have Physical Perfection when you exemp down below 39, but, come on, you're */Regen: QR and MoG (which actually nets you a minimum of 22.45 endurance per application) should be more than enough for anything you need prior to that level. It's not like */Regen has many expensive toggles it runs before the mids 30s.
You'll loose the considerably greater regen of Health that way, but you're right, it is an option. When I was originally leveling Gortak, my BS/Regen, I started to have to think a little about endurance about the time I got Disembowel; picking up Stamina at 30 totally eliminated any concerns.

Gor was a fun character to play most of the way to 50, I rolled him up as a kind of Conan type character and had a bunch of macros for him, things like "Come back stupid $target, Gor not through talking with you!" and "Gor not talk good, Gor let Sword do talking". I'd pull those type of comments out from time to time on teams.

    Thanks!
Well, you can outfit to the defense soft cap for under 50 million using my guide (linked in my sig)... that will give you lots of inf left to pay for extras that don't directly impact your defense. Extras like possibly a Numina unique and the like

Also, although yes this is regen and we would already have stamina and quick recovery, would it be worth taking physical perfection and conserve power? Instead of maybe maneuvers and weave. Also is there any particular reason as to why not take hasten? Would have thought it might go nicely with Broad Sword's signature slow recharge rates and regens for the matter.
Hasten's useful sure, and I had it until the last respec. I was looking to maximize my defense on that build however so I didn't have room for it anymore. That's why the Weave & Maneuvers, although admittedly Maneuvers could be dropped without affecting things much.

About Conserve Power... that BS/Regen has been 50 for almost 4 1/2 years now and in that time I've never had CP; I've also never found any need for it. Even on SO/HO enhancements prior to issue 9 I could attack non-stop for over 5 minutes before running low on end and I had zero endred slotting at the time; since IO's and getting basically free endred slotting in attacks my end bar never moves unless I'm facing Malta or Carnies with their end drains. CP is pretty much a waste on a Regen if you're taking QR & Stamina.

There's some logic to Physical Perfection but you're looking at a minor increase in regen, something you already have a ton of. I doubt you'd be able to really tell the difference.

Here's the build as it currently sits; there's room for a few improvements still but it works pretty well. Keep in mind that this IS a level 50 respec build and it was moderately expensive... although the power order is pretty close to how I'd do a leveling build. It sacrifices an APP to build defenses so there's no ranged attack. On the other hand, as a Regen it has no difficulty at all running the toggles and attacking full bore for extended periods of time.

Eventually I'd think about swapping in a few Numina's for the regen & HP bonuses; right now this is actually my second build. It would have taken too much work and too many respecs to clear the 50+ Hami-O's on the main build. (The character was 50 in issue 5, and I was raiding Hami 3 times a week from issue 4 until issue 9. HO's I have in abundance)

She's standing at level 22 right now and, following what I've gleaned from the forums, she has taken the following powers:

    Level 1: Rock Armor
    Level 1: Stone Fist
    Level 2: Stone Mallet
    Level 4: Earth's Embrace
    Level 6: Swift
    Level 8: Rooted
    Level 10: Taunt
    Level 12: Recall Friend
    Level 14: Teleport
    Level 16: Mud Pots
    Level 18: Health
    Level 20: Stamina
    Level 22: Stone Skin
This looks pretty solid; the only quibble is I'd probably have snagged EE at 2 and then Heavy Mallet at 4 but that's something that can be argued either way.

    Quote:

So far, I'm pretty happy with her performance. She can only defend herself against Smashing and Lethal damage, but taunting enemies and keeping them in melee usually means they only use attacks with an L/S component, which makes it ok. I'm finding it pretty exhilarating to run missions of say, Sky Raiders and not take any damage at all.

However, when I've faced elemental users who have no melee attacks or use elements that don't have an L/S component (mainly fire, electricity and dark blasts, the only psionics I've faced insisted on wasting time pointlessly trying to mezz me), I find I have to rely on my regeneration to get me through. This can go badly pretty easily if Earth's Embrace is not recharged and I don't have inspirations to help me. I haven't done that many CoT missions because I'm scared of their fire demons and ice and dark ghosts, who can probably overwhelm me.
COT can be nasty to a lot of builds; for the most part the regen in Rooted should take care of most of the problem. I've never found the Demons to be particularly dangerous but the Spectrals are nasty with their -tohit... you'll have to count on your team to kill them as once they get your tohit debuffed into subterranean ranges you won't be able to hit them. You should be able to survive them decently and Taunt & Mud Pots should hold their attention.

My Primary offers me three elemental armor toggles which would protect me in such situations. But should I take them? The general consensus seems to be that the answer is no, that I should wait for Granite to come around and then forget about armor toggles altogether. On the other hand, some posts advocate taking at least one or two of those powers and lead a more active life, attacking more often because the enormous -recharge of Granite is not in place, and only using Granite when my survival is at stake.

To be honest, the second choice sounds like a lot more fun.

But now I have to choose which powers to take between level 22 and 32, when Granite arrives. I wanted to take Heavy Mallet at 24, to complete my single target attack chain, which leaves 3 power choices open.
I've leveled two Stone tankers to 50 and frankly I really never saw a lot of need for Crystal or Brimstone. Oh, one word of advise on the Stone Melee side, don't forget to get Fault soon, it provides a huge amount of mitigation. Knock everything on it's butt and you've a breather while they stand back up... and all the Minions will be stunned. I'd probably get Fault at 22 instead of Stone Skin, or at least by 24.

    Quote:

Going full Granite would surely mean picking Boxing/Tough/Weave right now and Hasten later to counter the -recharge a bit.
You won't find much use for Tough/Weave in a Granite build... Tough will do NOTHING for you at all since Granite with Stone Skin (with only 1 resist in SS) will cap your S/L at 90%. The added defense of Weave looks good on paper, but Granite + Rooted is already unkillable by anything up to and including a tower buffed Lord Recluse.

    Quote:
Going hybrid would mean picking Crystal Armor (energies def + def debuff res), Minerals (psi def + delicious perception against Arachnos) and possibly Fault, for added mob control, and leaving the Fighting pool for the 40s. I'd only be open to pure fire attacks, but then I'd just run Granite all the time in fire-heavy missions.
Hmm, the debuff resist may be a reason to get Crystal after all come to think of it, but is ~40% debuff resistance (with Rock) enough to make a real difference? Mobs that debuff your defense generally hit it so hard that 40% is fairly pointless.

Minerals does have some uses, primarily against a few all-Psi baddie missions in the 40's. Offhand I can think of maybe 8-10 missions in the entire game where Psi damage predominates. If you get hit by a perception debuff eating a yellow insp. solves the problem nicely.

I'd have a hard time stressing enough just how important Fault is to you; it's one of the best powers in the entire set.

    Quote:
What should I do? I'm very scarce on inf so I can't really slot both builds at the same time.

Also, are there any powers in Stone Melee that are skippable? I'm thinking of ignoring Build Up and Hurl Boulder because I'm not aiming for Scrapper damage, and if I want a ranged attack with -fly, I can just pick up Stone Prison from the Earth Mastery pool.

Thanks a lot in advance for the advice.
Good call on skipping Build Up and Hurl Chunks... I mean Boulder.

In my experience if you're solo or on a small team (4 or fewer) you're probably ok tanking with only Rock Armor/Rooted/Stone Skin. With few exceptions most enemy groups aren't dangerous enough except in large numbers to need Granite.

The combo of Fault/Tremor works wonders for keeping a spawn on it's butt and with a little +recharge you can effectively keep them down permanently. My Stone Melee character is Invuln, but I don't have Hasten and only around 15% global recharge and that combo works nicely on him. Lead off with Fault, then hit a likely boss a time or two while the spawn gets back up then Tremor to knock them down again... rinse and repeat. That won't work in Granite of course, but it's a fantastic mitigater in Rock/Rooted/Stone Skin.

Stone Armor is about the only set I know of that really doesn't benefit much from IO bonuses for survivability; Granite Armor, Rooted & Stone Skin all slotted with SO's is plenty to tank nearly anything in the game; I ran my first STF with an SO'd Stone/Fire tank and had zero issues with Lord Recluse, even without any support from the team.

The advice you've gotten from some others looks sound to me; since I've only played one blaster to 50, an Archery/EM, and haven't ever rolled up an Ice blaster I don't consider myself qualified to give more than generalities. I generally play Tanks, Scrappers & Controllers... I know them far better than Blasters.

I don't recommend dropping Slice & Whirling Sword; they'll give you good service all the way to 50. Single target you have well covered with Hack, Disembowel and Headsplitter; Parry is just way too useful for the extra defense and Slice and Whirling Sword are your AOE potential.

Both of my Broadsword scrappers have and use the following attacks at 50:
    • Hack
    • Slice
    • Parry
    • Whirling Sword
    • Disembowel
    • Headsplitter
I know that Headsplitter is technically another AOE but it's such a narrow cone that I almost never use it as one... if I happen to get an extra mob in it it's just a bonus. Build Up, Whirling and Slice will take most of the starch out of a group of minions; focus on the boss/LT and simply add Slice & Whirling into your chain... by the time the boss/LT's are down the minions will be long dead.

On my current BS/Regen build I've ended up with 45% melee defense, 28% ranged and 20% AOE on top of ~560% full time regen giving me roughly 50 hit points per second of regen with Dull Pain active.

Furthermore, what set bonuses should each archetype ideally focus on?

    Zoner
You should focus on bonuses that best help your particular character and it's powers. For example, a character with a lot of defense generally gets the most use out of bonuses that boost defense, the closer it gets to 45% the more effective it is. A character who depends on long recharge powers such as an Illusion Controller maximizing the uptime of Phantom Army may on the other hand find recharge bonuses most useful.

There's no firm rule on what "each AT should focus on", it all depends on what bonuses will best complement a character's particular powers and playstyle. An Empath defender has different needs than a Kinetic defender or a Radiation defender; just because they're all the same AT doesn't mean they need the same things.

What character are you playing that you wanted to know about? That's what we'd need to know in order to offer you useful advise. A Broadsword/Regen scrapper has dramatically different needs than a Spine/Invulnerability yet they're both scrappers. A Fire/Radiation controller likewise has much different needs than an Earth/Radiation even though they share the same secondary.

The only difference between manufacturers is the sticker they put on the top. Also, each of the companies that has an "open fan" design also sells the brick version.

If it's a Sapphire, that would make it the most expensive and, from past history of the company, the best quality offering.
One of the images of the video card is a 3/4 rear/top view, it looks like the top view of the card in the system. Anyway, it was the only card on their site that comes close and that red top insert is fairly distinctive.

    <edit>

Just looked again, we have this image from the system
And this image from the Sapphire card

As to the rest of it (pricing things out from Newegg):

    i5-750 = $200
    ASUS P7P55D LE motherboard = 135
    4 GB DDR3 RAM = 100
    1 TB HD = 100
    DVD burner = 30
    Radeon 5770 = 165
    600 W (quality?) Power Supply = 100
    Win 7 install = 100
    NZXT Beta chasis = 40
    Aftermarket cooler = N/A

Total for self build = $970
    Cyberpower Price = $950

On the face of it, that looks like a decent value. However, the company can't be selling at a loss. So either they are getting very good wholesale prices, or they've shaved quality on some components. Of concern to me would be: the RAM, the HD, the power supply, and the graphics card. Getting low-timing or poorly rated ram would be annoying, but not crippling. A low quality HD is most likely to be a little noisy and may have a shorter lifespan. The powersupply in the Newegg pictures is "Cyberpower brand", so I have no idea of its noise, build quality, or even 80 Plus efficiency certification. You can get a junk 600 W power supply on Newegg for $40. Finally, from that picture I can't tell who's graphics card that is. If it's Diamond, they are the cheapest but also the poorest rated of ATI card makers. I have no personal experience with them, but je_saist says they're unreliable and they get rather consistently-bad reviews on Newegg.
Just did some checking, the video card appears to be a Sapphire with, it appears, 1GB DDR3. (It appears to match the picture anyway) The Newegg reviews seem to be fairly favorable... I've never used that brand though. Newegg prices it at $180

I'm not familiar with the manufacturer, but the specs look good... it should be good for COH Ultra Mode at least on mid-range settings. An Intel quad core CPU with that ATI 5770 should handle most anything you'd care to throw at it.

I tend to buy Asus or MSI for motherboards myself; I've always had good luck with them and they're consistently rated among the top brands. I'll confess to being a bit behind the times on knowledge of chipsets... I usually only study up on them when I'm ready to upgrade equipment and my last major upgrade was a year ago.

I did notice an i7 based machine with an Nvidia 250GTS for roughly $100 more than the unit you mentioned; maybe someone with more current hardware knowledge can say if it's enough bang for the buck better.

Now, though I am a little concerned with where I am going to purchase the rig from. I have been looking at CyberPower and a couple others. Where do you recommend purchasing a pre-made rig from (I do not have the skills or patience to assemble my machine)?

Cyberpower looks like it is around $200 cheaper than most other sights but their forums are littered with unhappy customers (true it seems to be people who buy higher end comps). Also looking at iBuyPower and seeing many of the same comments from people. Are any of these sights trustworthy?
I haven't bought a pre-assembled PC in so many years I'm not sure of the players, but you'd have a hard time finding a better company to buy from than Newegg. That's where I've bought about 90% of my computer parts over the last 10 years and they're extremely reliable.

I'd probably look for a machine intended for Gaming. I'd want at least 4GB of RAM and a decent video card, check out the thread on graphics cards for the upcoming Ultra Mode for thoughts there.

Should I run both at once? Do I switch constantly? Do I pick one and roll with that? I'm not too sure, and any help would be appreciated.
Defensive/Resistance toggles are generally a fire and forget; typically you turn them on when you log in and then leave them run. Deflection provides Melee defense and Smash/Lethal resistance while Battle Agility provides Ranged & AOE defense so they protect you from different things. Attacks are generally flagged as being Melee attacks (punches, kicks and so forth), Ranged attacks (blasts, gunfire and anything from range) and AOE attacks (Area of Effect, attacks that can hit more than one character. Things like Fire Ball and the like)

Because of this Deflection protects from punches, kicks and the like but doesn't protect you from a mob tossing energy blasts at you from 20' away. Likewise Battle Agility protects from those attacks but doesn't help you against punches & kicks. Once your build matures you'll be running both shields plus other toggles as well to maximize your survivability.

HOWEVER, I'm going to guess that your brute is still low level? Pre-20 and Stamina? In that case endurance will be an issue for you... I generally don't get the Ranged/AOE shield until level 22 and deal with the Melee shield only until then. The reasoning is that as a Brute you'll be fighting mostly Melee mobs and before Stamina endurance is tight, particularly with a brute constantly chasing Fury.

My suggestion for the early levels would be to slot endurance reduction in your shield and mainly slot accuracy and endurance reduction in your attacks. If it were me I'd probably start a SS/Shield brute something like this:

    1. Punch & Deflection
    2. Haymaker
    4. True Grit
    6. Hurdle (Fitness pool)
    8. Knock Out Blow
    10. Active Defense (eventually 3 slot for recharge)
    12. Combat Jumping
    14. Super Jump
    16. Against All Odds (endurance reduction, one is probably enough)
    18. Health (Fitness Pool)
    20. Stamina, 3 slot for Endurance Modification.
    22. Battle Agility
  19. Invuln got hit hard by the nerf bat in two consecutive issues, but those issues were # 5 and 6, roughly 4 years ago. Since that time Invuln has seen several BUFFS, the first was the overall defense change in issue 7 which made the defense in Invincibility and Tough Hide much more effective. Then we got a fairly major series of buffs in issue 13 about a year ago that RAISED our resistances by about 1/3 and eliminated the -defense in Unyielding among other things. This was absolutely, unquestionably and unarguably a major increase in the sets effectiveness.

In NO way has Invuln been reduced in effectiveness since the nerfs of issue 6.

If I had to guess I'd say that the OP has a build that needs improvement... oh, and it's perfectly possible to tank the ITF without support on a SO enhanced Invuln... it can be done without Tough also; I did it several times on CMA prior to respec'ing into my soft capped build.

OP, please look at your build. You should have the following powers from Invulnerability with this SO slotting:
    • Temporary Invulnerability with 3 resist/1 endurance
    • Dull Pain with 3 recharge/3 heal
    • Unyielding with 3 resist/1 endurance
    • Invincibility with 3 defense, 1 endurance & taunt/tohit buff optional in the last 3 slots.
    • Resist Physical Damage with 1-3 resist
    • Tough Hide with 3 defense
That should handle the majority of the situations you'll find yourself in. Other powers you'll want to consider are:
    • Fitness pool for Stamina, typically I have Hurdle/Health/Stamina from the pool. 3 End Mod in Stamina, the base slot for Hurdle/Health.
    • Resist Energies from your primary with 1-3 resist.
    • Either the Medicine pool for Aid Other/Aid Self (the selection I had prior to IO's, Aid Self slotted 3 heal/1-2 interrupt/1-2 recharge) or the Fighting Pool for Boxing/Tough (3 resist/1 end) and possibly Weave (3 defense/1 end)
That should leave you plenty of room for the vital powers in your secondary with a little wiggle room to allow for a few selections from an Epic power pool and your travel power.

Invulnerability is, and always has been, a hybrid set mixing resistance, defense and healing/HP boosting (in Dull Pain). That's always been it's strength, the layered protections. First, an incoming attack must beat your defense or you take NO damage, so Defense is your first line of protection. Second, an attack that beats your defense has it's damage reduced by your resistance so attacks that hit do less damage. Third, Dull Pain is a massive heal AND a (slotted) 60% hit point buff so you'll have more HP to back up your first two layers.
  20. You can always keep a finger on the spacebar while you're rotating your viewpoint, that will keep you level or going up instead of down, depending on your viewing angle.
  21. A fast solo'er... well, I've played the following to 50:
    BS/Regen
    Spine/Regen
    BS/Shield

All three were solo'd a fair amount of the way. Early game the BS/Regen was, by far, the most survivable. Mid game the Spine/Regen started to really take hold... probably around the mid-20's or so. Unfortunately both of the Regens got much squishier (comparatively) in the 40's. From around 35 on the BS/Shield was far more survivable than either of the Regens and a considerably faster killer. It was a slow starter though; it didn't come into it's own until the mid-30's.

My only WP character is my 48 Fire/WP brute... my impression is that overall it's a decent secondary but it has struck me as being somewhat squishy. Maybe it's that I'm trying to play it like a tank or my BS/Shield but it isn't as tough. I know it's apples to oranges but I think a decently built BS/Regen scrapper is tougher than a decently built Fire/WP brute.

My vote really depends on if you want something that's good from the start and still decent late or if you're willing to suffer a bit early for an incredible late game performer. If you want to be good early and still decent late then the BS/Regen might be up your alley. If you're willing to suffer until the mid 20's and become awesome in the 35+ game then BS/Shield is an excellent choice.

It would also depend somewhat on your budget for IO's... on straight SO enhancements the BS/Regen will be the strongest all the way to 50. Toss IO's into the mix and things change.

Remember, this is just the sets I've actually played to high levels... lots of other combinations would work equally well or possibly better. I've been considering Fire/Shield lately... and I'm currently working on a Shield/Fire tanker.

    Make me a !!!

I can see people wanting everything handed to them, particularly new players who may not have a good understanding of the game. Typically I offer suggestions though instead of an outright build. I will frequently provide a framework, such as my first 20 levels of Invulnerability guide but it's rare that I'll do everything for someone.

Things like "You'll want power X, Y & Z as soon as possible and you'll want power W sometime but it's lower priority than power A." or "Power B is generally skippable because ________" That approach gives them the information they really need to avoid gimping themselves while helping them figure things out. Giving them a complete 1-50 build complete with slotting doesn't help them nearly as much.

I've pretty much given up trying to suggest things to PuG players with absolutely terrible builds; generally even something like "You'll have an easier time if you take Unyielding on your tanker" frequently aren't well received. I actually mentioned that to a tanker playing a level 40 ish Invuln on a PuG awhile back and was told that HE was an uber veteran and knew everything there was to know about tanking and Unyielding was a crap power. Obviously I couldn't know anything about Invuln, he was the tank; I was only playing a dark defender. Ah well, I just had to go ahead and handle the tanking myself... as a dark/dark defender.

    Unstoppable?

When issue 13 rolled around and changed the rules on IO def bonuses and buffed Invuln I'll admit I was a bit skeptical about just how effective a soft capped build would be so I hung onto Unstoppable for awhile. Well, I tanked probably 20 ITF's, a dozen or so STF's as well as many other missions and TF's for several months and never once needed Unstoppable.

With that experience in mind I dropped it when I respec'd again in issue 14, I still haven't missed it. I'd found it useful in the issue 6 - 12 era, but once you get your defenses up to significant levels it's fairly pointless. I carry a few inspirations for the very few occasions where incoming damage overcomes my defenses now, many times they'll sit there in my tray unused for long periods of time. About the only time I really use much in the way of insps is tanking Lord Recluse on the STF before the red & blue towers go down.

I'd toss it into Stamina and forget it, it'll have a chance to fire every 10 seconds so on average it'll fire once per minute. I believe mathematically it's very slightly better than a 3rd end mod IO in Stamina, if you have slots it can go into a 4th slot.
