Quote:And there's the occasional force divider like a Fire/? blaster I teamed with a while back... he was kind of like a ferret on a sugar high with "ooo, shiny bad guys!" "Ooo, MORE shiny bad guys!" "Hey, here's another group!" "I found a nice shiny Paragon Protector over in this room, he's nice and purple, he and his buddies are coming to meet us, I think they want an autograph"Welcome to the game. I have been here 5 years now and still login almost every day.
I find I like solo play as well as teaming. Teaming is usualy more fun and certain characters come alive with teams becoming vertitable force multipliers.
All kidding aside those players really are few and far between; that's why they're so memorable. In the case above the rest of us were actually starting to get a kick out of seeing just what kind of trouble Sir Blastsalot would bring next; we were generally perfectly capable of handling his, um, exuberance. -
Quote:Well, the bare drive is just that, the drive. It'll come wrapped in bubble wrap containing a drive in an anti-static bag. If your machine has a free 3.5" internal hard drive bay it will mount directly; all you'll need is a spare SATA cable and some screws. The brackets are only needed if you're mounting it in a 5 1/4" bay (CD ROM drive bay). I'm assuming your power supply has a free SATA power connector? If not you'll need an adapter to change a 4 pin power connector to a SATA connector. Thanks, guys! I appreciate the information. Though I may be back when I have the drive in hand for some last-minute installation support--I've never installed a hard drive before.
Speaking of which, I'm guessing that if I buy a 'bare bones' drive from NewEgg I'll also need installation brackets. Is there anything else I'll need?
Did your computer come with spare cables? If not you'll need a SATA cable long enough to reach from the motherboard to the drive... which depends on the size of the case and where the HD bays are. Usually 18" is plenty long enough unless you've some monster case.
The drive mounts into the bay with screws of course, a hard drive uses the same screws that hold the expansion cards in your case so you may have spares of those as well. Technically you use 4 screws to secure the drive... unless you're going to be transporting the case via air freight two is usually enough to keep it out of trouble, particularly if you're just going to sit the case on the floor and leave it alone.
Mounting a drive is really almost one of those "a monkey could do it" things, slide it into the bay, screw it in place, attach the power connector to the drive and the SATA cable to the drive and motherboard. Really nothing in putting the hardware of a computer together is very hard for anyone who knows which end of a screwdriver to hold. It's much easier than configuring software.
I was apprehensive before I built my first computer from scratch but it was easy; just a case of tab A into slot B. -
A halfway decent 500W ps should well able to handle your needs... hard drives just don't burn much. My case has an Antec 500W pushing an Intel quad core 9550 cpu, 4GB ram, 8800GTS vid card, 2 DVD burners and 4 hard drives; a pair of them 1TB models. According to the power calculator (a web page that Father Xmas posted a while back) I'm burning around 400 watts.

Quote:Ninja Run is about half the run speed of Super Speed and about half the jump of Super Jump. Turn on Sprint + Ninja Run and you're running faster than the Raptor Pack and jumping about half as high/long as super jump... and you get it at level 4.What is the Ninja Run power that's part of the new "Martial Arts" booster pack? Is this just another sprint power or is it something better?
It's well worth it. At level 50 Sprint (unslotted) + NR is about the base speed of Super Speed. -
Quote:My only purpose in the zone is to obtain Shivans. That's what I'm there for, that's the only thing I'm there for. PvP is a risk, yes, but I have zero obligation to engage in it. Because I, and the vast majority of the playerbase for that matter, have no interest in PvP there's no reason at all why we should engage in it. Simply being in the zone only means we accept the risk of being attacked, it in no way means we're there to PvP.If you don't want PVP and are unwilling to participate in it, you have no business being in the zone in the first place. You're consenting to PVP by entering the zone, explicitly and implicitly, and then if you change your mind you're essentially going back on that agreement. You're tipping over the chessboard rather than lose your queen. It's poor sportsmanship to agree to play a game and abide by the rules of the zone then refuse to play the game when it doesn't go your way.
So again, your wants do not equal an obligation for anyone else to oblige you. I frankly don't understand why you have such a difficult time understanding this. -
-
Quote:You have an extremely unusual definition of "sportsmanship". Someone is in zone for strictly PvE purposes and while yes, they run the risk of being attacked they aren't there for PvP. You're saying that avoiding or escaping from unwanted PvP is unsportsmanlike?Does the term "poor sportsmanship" rankle your hide any less? Because I'm willing to sub it out.
Come on.
Just because you decide to attack someone in no way whatsoever obligates them to oblige you in any way. They have no interest in PvP at all so quite rightly they leave. They're there for the temp power, not to provide you with a free kill. Sorry to disillusion you. -
By definition I am a PvE'er... I do go after Shivans on occasion but by no means am I even the slightest interested in PvP; if I encounter a villain I simply avoid them if possible and leave if not.
I accept the risk of running into a PvP'er as the cost of getting Shivans, and I don't seriously object to their being there IF THEY BEHAVE IN AN ACCEPTABLE MANNER. I'll simply leave if they try to engage because I dislike PvP. It doesn't matter if I'm running a level 50 IO'd out scrapper or a level 15 squishy I will not engage in PvP because I do not enjoy it.
Where I have a major problem is the trash talking juvenile delinquents who seem to predominate in zone PvP. In my opinion that behavior has no reason to exist, it's the kind of thing you see between 8 year olds arguing on the playground. I don't put up with it from children in real life, I'm damned well not going to put up with it in a game. -
Quote:You have got to be kidding here, the CoX boards are, by a HUGE margin, the least flame-prone I have ever seen. You posted a fairly poorly thought out statement to the effect that "bases are useless" and you received several calm, rational rebuttals to your statement. At this point you decided to start hurling insults, such as:Leblanc, It's the idiots out there that try to flame a post which makes posting opinions on the boards a bad idea. This is a forum, a place to voice your opinions and find out what others think about the topic. That is what the boards are for, information and conversation. But if someone has an opinion that is different than others, or a question that is unknown to the original poster but someone thinks it's so easy....thats when the flame starts instead of people just posting with common sense and civility.

Guys, if your gonna bash someone, try to not make yourselves look like the moron. Think before you type.

Quote:Dull Pain is a critical portion of your survivability; in my opinion it should be your level 2 power. On SO enhancements it should have 3 recharge/3 heal... for IO sets the Doctored Wounds set is a very good choice and allows you to cut it down to 5 slots (skipping the End/Recharge). Dull pain acts as a huge heal AND as a massive boost to your hit points... with the recommended slotting it adds ~60% to your hit points. At level 50 you'll have 1874 hit points... hit dull pain and you'll have 2,979 hit points.I'm a tank newbie and I have a level 28 tank without Dull Pain. I then started reading a bunch of the forum posts and it seems that I must include Dull Pain. So my questions are:
1. Is Dull Pain a necessity for Inv tanks?
2. If so, how many slots and how do I slot it?
Thanks!
It sounds like you're probably working with a build that could stand improvement; I'd suggest you take a look at my Invuln Tankers first 20 levels guide (linked in my signature) for a "framework" on the critical powers in the set and suggestions on when to take them. If your current build differs much from that guideline you may want to consider a respec.
Built correctly Invuln is second only to Stone in durability... if you decide to build towards the defense cap (my advanced guide, Invuln Tankers and the defense soft cap) then there's virtually nothing in the game that can really threaten you. -
We appear to have a conflict with the PvP mindset being unable to comprehend that for the vast majority of the playerbase PvP is something to be avoided. Just because someone is running a PvE mission in a PvP zone doesn't mean they have any interest whatsoever in PvP. Yes, they run the risk of PvP, but most will actively avoid it.
Here's my question to the PvP'ers... just how is your constantly chasing and ganking players who already have no interest in PvP advancing your cause? You're creating an unpleasant experience for them which isn't exactly the best way to encourage them to want to PvP.
Personally I absolutely DESPISE the PvP mentality that I see in the zones... in the time since issue 6 I've run across only a handful of zone PvP'ers who wern't there simply to gank anyone they saw. (That doesn't count the players who were only there for the PvE missions.) All the rest have been trash talking gloating gankers. Over 4 years in game on 2 servers and that's been my experience.
I won't put up with that attitude in real life and there's no way I'll put up with it in a game. Because of this experience I REFUSE to participate in PvP. I'll run the Shivan mission simply because the vast majority of the time Bloody Bay's empty... or at least only populated by other players solely interested in Shivans. I avoid Warburg and Siren's completely because of the prevalence of this attitude.
People in this game, by and large, hate PvP and the behavior of the vast majority of zone PvP'ers is the reason why. -
Well, Amazon.com has the COH DVD Collector's in stock... but they want $99 per copy
. Other than happening to luck into finding an unopened copy in a bargain bin somewhere that may be your only option.

I've leveled a couple of Stone tankers to 50, one a Stone/EM and the other Stone/Fire so I've acquired some familiarity with the Stone Armor set.
I can see what you're going for here; it looks like you're sacrificing a good chunk of survivability to do it though. Granite really needs to be slotted for resistance as well as defense... as it is you're way over the soft cap defensively on Granite but well under where you should be in resistance.
The Miracle unique in EE will only work for 2 minutes after you click the power... I'd certainly suggest moving it to Health. In fact I'd suggest 5 slotting EE with Doctored Wounds instead, it'll be much cheaper and the bonuses you're getting from the Miracle really aren't that useful to you.
Somewhat the same reasoning applies to Rooted and the Harmonized Healing; that's a lot of slots invested for minimal return. Personally I simply frankenslot end/heal IO's there and call it good in 3 slots.
I don't suggest spending the inf on the KB proc in the Blessing of the Zephyr set, it really doesn't do anything worthwhile for you and it's extremely expensive. Along the same lines I'd pull that proc out of recall & TP as well.
Taunt is probably better with the Mocking Beratement set for you, particularly since it offers a cheap 7.5% recharge bonus.
As a stone tank I find that Swift is MUCH more useful than Hurdle... 3 slotted Swift helps offset the -run in Rooted and Granite.
I realize you're going for AOE/F/C defense with Stamina but that's a lot of slots to invest for it, I'd pull the last two slots from there, you've other places that can better use them.
In your armors slotting I'd consider the Gift of the Ancients set instead of the Luck of the Gambler; for one it's cheaper by a rather large margin and it'll give you some very tasty recovery and +endurance bonuses. The +runspeed proc is an added benefit for a stone tank. That LotG +recharge proc is mighty nice, but unless you've several hundred million inf to throw at the build they're in the "luxury" category... last I saw they sold for 80-100 million.
Oh, one missing piece is the Steadfast Protection unique, it's worth 3% defense to ALL and would go nicely into Stone Skin. It's a bit pricey, but nothing like the LotG +recharge... last one I bought was around 15 million. They're not too expensive if you're using Merits; around 120 merits if I remember correctly. Ah, scratch that previous comment, I see it slotted into Tough... Stone Skin is still a better choice IMO.
Hope that gives you a few ideas; there's a few things that are different than I'd do but it should work. For one I never saw the need for Tough/Weave... if I was facing more than Rock Armor/Rooted/Stone Skin could handle I had Granite available. Fully slotted Granite (ED cap resist & defense, possible even on SO's) was always the "you can't hurt me" button; even Lord Recluse buffed by his towers can't kill my stoner, and I don't even need team support. Ghost Widow on the other hand with her MAG 100 hold of doom..... -
Quote:No action of yours? That sounds like there was something running in the background; I know I've been playing late at night when my scheduled antivirus scan kicks in and nukes my framerate... I switch over and kill the scan and all is well again.I'll try some of your suggestions, but it has returned to normal, apparently through no action of mine.
I swear, I think the system is dying. No shame to it, it's 12 years old...
I'm planning on getting a new PC over Christmas.
Thanks all for your advice and input, I'll let you know if I have further trouble...
Still, your settings looked pretty high; some of them were higher than I run on my machine and it's a good bit more powerful than your specs. Of course thanks to my "real job" in video production it really bothers me if a framerate drops below 30fps and I can see the difference between 40fps and 60fps... I try to make sure I never bottom out below 40fps and stay as close to 60 at all times as I can. -
Quote:If you need a coalition for teleporter usage let me know CMA.Quote:Same here, yer welcome to coalition to my VG and use the Porters if needed.
. Last I looked we were up to roughly 250k... it'll cost a bit more than that for a full base.
Hmm, I just realized that so far I've built 3 fully established SG bases worth over 5 million prestige, one of them approaching 20 million and am now starting a fourth. Does this mean I've been here too long??? -
Quote:Your graphics settings are REALLY high, particularly for a 1.6 Pentium 4 and 7600 vid card. Try something like this, I've highlighted the changes I'd make with your machine:Physics Quality: Medium
Maximum Particles: 50000
Max Particle Fill? 10.000
Physics Card Enabled: No
Anti-aliasing: 4x
Anisotropic Filtering: 4x
Texture LOD Bias: Smooth
Water Effects: High Quality
Bloom: 1.000 (turned on)
Depth of Field Enabled: Yes
Desaturation Effects (Sepia) Enabled: Yes
Shader Detail: High
World Texture Level: Very High
Character Texture Level: Very High
World Detail Level (Vis_Scale): 1.000
Entity Detail Level: 1.000
Shadows Enabled: Yes
Gamma Correction: 1.000
Geometry Buffers (VBOs) Enabled: Yes
Suppression of Extra Player FX Enabled: No
Suppression of FX When Camera Close Enabled: Yes
Close Suppression Range: 3.000
Show Advertisements: Yes
Anti-aliasing: OFF
Anisotropic Filtering: OFF
Texture LOD Bias: Smooth
Water Effects: OFF (this is a huge performance hit)
Bloom: 1.000 (turned on) (Yikes, this is another huge perf. hog, turn it off)
Depth of Field Enabled: No
Desaturation Effects (Sepia) Enabled: Yes
Shader Detail: Low (bumpmaps)
World Texture Level: Medium
Character Texture Level: Medium
World Detail Level (Vis_Scale): 1.000
Entity Detail Level: 1.000
Shadows Enabled: No (This is a noticeable hit on my 8800GTS/QuadCore Intel 9550 CPU)
Give those settings a try and see how it works, if it still isn't enough consider dropping things a bit more. Once you get good performance experiment with turning up settings until you find the quality/performance level that works best for you. Oh, you can also step down maximum particles and particle fill, those can also be major hogs. -
Well, so far Bill Collector has only hit 5 so it's a bit early to tell, but he's playing rather like a claw scrapper... I'm kind of making things up as I go along since I haven't really studied the SoA sets as of yet.
Wouldn't you know that the villain I get to 50 is one I rolled up on Infinity... BC lives on Guardian with the rest of my characters. Starting over again with an empty base and no money; although that should change quickly with a little marketing, or since it's redside is that racketeering?
-
After 5 years playing this game and 12 level 50's blueside I finally leveled a villain. Fyrepower, my Fire/WP brute, hit 50 tonight. Unfortunately the moment of the ding wasn't exactly... epic, a Longbow Eagle pushed him over the top. I'd been hoping to hit it killing Ms. Liberty in an Abyss mission but my timing was off
.
Anyway I'm now officially one of the dirty rotten redsidersI'm not sure what my next project may be, but I did roll up a Widow. I picked the most evil, nasty and disgusting name I could think of: Bill Collector.

Quote:I never said it couldn't hold aggro, just that it was a lot harder than with better tanking sets. Pair it with an AOE heavy secondary and it'll be adequate in the hands of someone who knows how and works at keeping aggro. These problems can be avoided by always taking and using Taunt. As well as picking a secondary that puts out AoE damage, like Dual Blades or Elec.
My WP/DB Tanker is a beast at holding aggro. I love the compliments
I'm afraid I just can't get enthused about it personally as a tanker set, my number one criteria for a tank is the ability to hold aggro and by that measure WP is the worst tanker primary. -
WP is a decent scrapper/brute set, although it seems weaker than some. My 49 Fire/WP brute is certainly much squishier than my 50 BS/Shield scrapper... both are IO'd heavily. It seems comparable to my Spine/Regen scrapper in durability, or about middle of the pack in late game.
Now my main complaint with WP as a tanker set is it's nonexistent taunt aura... WP tankers have a much harder time holding aggro and most I've teamed with don't even try. The terrible aura is the main reason why I haven't had any interest in playing a WP tank; I feel rather strongly that a tank is supposed to hold aggro. -
As has been said, if you're only going to be able to build one defense to significant level then S/L is certainly your best option, it protects against considerably more attacks than any other defense type.
I'd certainly recommend focusing exclusively on S/L... having that as high as practical will be more useful than getting all of your defenses to moderate levels. -
Quote:That's a very good question and it depends on what level of challenge you want to take. Tanking for a small group with a few buffs available? Your base, SO level performance of your primary alone is perfectly adequate for this. Tanking for an 8 man team running normal missions facing +1 or +2 mobs? Unless you've def/res buffs on the team you'll want to be a bit tougher, adding Tough/Weave would handle this; possibly with a few set bonuses.
- - - How much Resistance and Defense is 'enough'?
I'm not asking how much I need to solo Ghost Widow, or to tank a 8++ spawn of Bosses in AE without back-up. I want enough to be Comfortable, no matter what I'm doing, in an 'average' situation. I want to be able, with some quick thinking and perhaps an Inspiration or two, to survive when the randomblaster accidentally pulls an extra spawn-group. Then high-five the def/troller who spammed lots of green numbers.
I'm not looking for enough protection to 'Not Die' regardless of the situation, I just want enough to Have Fun Playing and not ruin it for my teammates, by dying too soon.
When 'Heraclea' goes to work, how much Resistance is she carrying? When Ironblade's Tanker herds a pull, how much protection is he comfortable with?
Yes, 'The Maximum' is a fine goal - we all want to be Invulnerable - or as near as we can get. How much is 'enough'?
For most normal tanking you'll be ok with your ~70% S/L resistance and 25% or so defense provided you've at least minimal team support. Tanking the STF without significant team support buffs? That's the kind of thing you'll want to build up the defense/resistance for. I know CMA can tank anything Granite Flame, my Stone/Fire can tank. Sure it's overkill for 95% of the game; but that 5% is where you really need everything you can get. Tank Lord Recluse buffed by his towers unassisted while your team takes down the towers? Can Do... it just requires some thought beforehand and a decent inspiration layout. The only difference between CMA and Granite Flame is that Granite can do it without inspirations... and could do it on SO's. -
Well, I'd certainly go with SS over EM; while I haven't played SS to a significant level I HAVE played an EM tank to 50 and it was fairly painful to level even in issue 7.
Another thought might be a Shield/Mace using one of the custom weapons... how about a manhole cover in one hand and a shovel in the other? Your basic construction site sledgehammer? Mace as I understand it has some decent AOE and packs a wallop nowadays. -
Quote:Nope, 45% defense protects against the same number of attacks on a tank as on a blaster, in both cases it reduces the mob's chance to hit you as low as it can go. PFF is an excellent panic button defense for a blaster; you simply had a mob or two get a lucky hit in.Well yes, knew that had different caps and why Def is superior to Res on low HP AT's but that still doesn't answer if there is a hidden base multiplier in there somewhere that we are not seeing.
If I have PFF on a Blaster and walk into an 8 man group alone, I will die.
If I do the same with a SR scrapper in Elude I am untouchable.
Or at least that is the way it feels, it could be purely placebo and probably is... but it always made me wonder.
Now, a scrapper has more hit points than a blaster, so he can survive more of those lucky hits. There's no modifiers on resistance or defense though, an amount of defense that allows only one in 20 attacks (on average) to hit a scrapper will do the exact same on a blaster.
Resistance works by reducing the damage that an attack does when it hits; if you have 20% resistance to smashing damage and get hit by a punch that does 100 points of damage you take 80 points. That's the same no matter what AT you are, 20% resistance means you take 20% less damage. Obviously this is more effective the more hit points you have.
What ARE different on different AT's are the CAPS to resistance or defense, the point at which you cannot increase the statistic. For all AT's the defense cap is way, WAY beyond what you'd have any purpose for... on the order of 300%. Since 45% will floor the baddie's chances to hit you having a higher amount of defense is, with a few exceptions, pointless. (Those exceptions would be either mobs with tohit buffs such as Rularu or Devouring Earth once they drop the Quartz emanators or mobs with significant -defense in their attacks) The Resistance cap is reachable with buffs and does matter, for Tanks & Brutes it's 90%; Keldians are 85% and everyone else is capped at 75%. -
Well, in my opinion on the Invuln side, once you've softcapped, Unstoppable is skippable as you have done, Resist Elements is likewise skippable... it's minor resistance to a rare damage type.
I've leveled a couple of Fire Melee characters and obviously you're stuck with Scorch. Skippable powers in Fire Melee, I'd put Build Up first on the chopping block, then Breath of Fire. I consider Combustion/Fire Sword Circle the cornerstone of the set and should come ASAP, and I'd also fairly strongly recommend Greater Fire Sword and Incinerate. If you're getting tight on powers Fire Sword would be my next choice to drop.
Boxing/Tough/Weave are part of the defense build so that's one pool and 3 powers. Hurdle/Health/Stamina are a given; another pool and 3 powers. Finally you've your travel power and prereq for a third pool and 2 powers.
Let's see, we're up to 7 powers from the primary, 6 or 7 from the secondary and 8 pool powers. That leaves you with room for 2 or 3 choices from your APP. Picking Pyre Mastery if you get 3 powers then I'd suggest Char/Fire Blast/Fire Ball... if you're stuck with only 2 then I'd probably be tempted to get Ice for Block of Ice and Ice Blast.
In order of selection, I'd build like my first 20 levels guide early and plan on sliding Boxing/Tough/Weave in the late 20's to 32, Incinerate & Greater Fire Sword at 35 & 38 and your APP selections at 41,44 & 47. I'd put Resist Energies at 49. Squeezing in Hasten would cost you (in my opinion) Fire Sword and your third APP selection. Is Hasten worth that trade? That's your call, I'd probably skip it myself and just make up the recharge with conventional slotting; CMA is Inv/Stone and has no difficulty with his attack chain without Hasten; my good attacks come back fast enough with my attack slotting.
I generally slot PBAOE attacks with 5 Scirocco's Dervish (all but the proc) and a common recharge IO. That ED caps damage & almost recharge with over 65% in accuracy... that slotting brings Fire Sword Circle back in a little over 10 seconds with no IO recharge bonuses. Combustion comes back in a little over 7 seconds. Hasten would cut roughly 2.5 seconds off of those times.
