Don't get me wrong, I really like the Trio pic... My nitpics were just that. I find it helpful to occasionally focus on what I don't like so I know what to look for and emphasize in the future...
In fact I have no problem at all if anyone ever wants to criticise or point out flaws in my future (or past) arts... I probably noticed already but others commentary may just give me the phrasing I need to better explain what I want / am looking for in the future...
Point in fact, I think I'm going to be swiping CR's horn sketch above to put in Cae's references... It'll be much easier to point to that and say that's how the horns should look than to try to say they're not curved right or are angled wrong... -
Quote:lol, you didn't have to do that
But Woot!! I got two Foo originals for the price of one!! -

Quote:Neither, just giving you a cyber punch in the nose! MUAHAHAHAHAAAA
OW!!!
What I ever do to you to deserve that???
(Well, excepting all those leers, innuendo's and attempts to spank you???)

But go tell the artists!!All I did was rent them out for a bit of time...

Quote:Ah, I can see that... The looking down upon the city bit. Dunno, something about the moon had me thinking more mystical or somethingMaybe it's too dark to see, but I figured you were both looking down at the city below.
I actually designed the piece to work (I hope) as separate halves, with just one character and the moon.
I had no idea the cat face was actually how he's supposed to look!
As for the cat face... I suck with keeping events straight but I think I may have hired you on for these before I got the CR sketch I use as my avatar... I used the feral face in game more for the general look than the specific but once I saw CR's sketch I decided that that was definitely Caemgen's face to a T. But at that point I didn't want to go back and retroactively ask artists to change things after I had already sent reference pics... Maybe I should be more assertive but for the most part I try not to change things after the may already be mid stream... -

Ok, having finally seen full size I can officially say - That's pretty darn sweet art there!
I'm not sure if you intended for me to be bowing my head to her in reverance, or if we're supposed to be meditating together or exactly what but it's very cool... Great job Foomeister! -

Ok, was several things in here I wanted to comment on so I'll do it bit by bit...
Thanks!
Some are more hit, some maybe a tad more on the miss side, but there's not one I don't really like for one aspect or another.
Quote:Those inks by Tim Kelly have a cool exaggerated (almost caricature) grungy look to them and some of the details make me chuckle, like Alpha's jets puffing out little cute clouds, hah love it. I've drawn stuff similar to that in the past just for fun but didn't think anything about making it it's own style, it looks like TK has done just that and with great success.
Yeah, I definitely love the little puffs of smoke... Reminds me the early days of Alpha's being able to fly when it felt all he was doing was puttering through the sky!
But yeah, I definitely like the grungy/caricature type look here, especially how he applied it to my characters. Like I said, his work kind of reminds me of the old The Maxx cartoons... One sec while I see if I can find some examples...
Nope, can't find any good images I can just set in here but I have links!
http://www.oldmanmusings.com/2005/12/03/the-maxx/ brings you to a page about The Maxx and has a bunch of pictures from it...
http://timkelly.deviantart.com/art/The-Maxx-Mr-Gone-and-an-Isz-90104851 Apparently Tim Kelly has done some Maxx art before for someone...
http://wya.deviantart.com/art/1995-MAXX-102645846 Another DA artists take on Maxx
http://spasmaticgonads.deviantart.com/art/The-Maxx-6261053 yet another one, this one containing hundreds of Isz... I loved those little beasties!
Anyway, to me at least, the art of The Maxx was more about just having the right mood and feel for the characters without worrying overly much on silly things like anatomy, consistancy and suchIt was rough yet skilled art... Eh, I'm not an art critic and cannot describe it all that well but I always thought it was very cool... And when I stumbled upon TimKelly and saw how much his stuff reminded me of that I had to grab some no matter he's not doing typical "superhero" arts.
Quote:The trio by studio has a real cool comic art look to it and the poses are well executed and bonus it looks like Caemgens nose isn't human though it's too small to be sure (there is something not quite right with one of Caemgen's horns though). I am curious though that Daybreaker Alpha and Caemgen appear to have the same power FX on them... thought they were different sets or perhaps this is one of those artists you mentioned that is not familiar with CoH?
Did I mention something about people not familiar with CoH? I do not recall... I have no problem with those who aren't at all, that's for sure. I already went on about the powersets but I often think little of the powersets when it comes to the arts... How my characters would be ideally in my head and how the powersets let them be aren't really all that similiar so I have no problems with artists not taking CoH powersets or poses into mind when doing the arts... (I will admit though that Electric Melee for Fen's primary is winning me over...)
As for the StudioCultComics piece specifically...
I wanted a piece featuring my trio all together, studiocultcomics came on my radar, they were priced nicely and so I jumpedWhen I contacted them I told them I wanted a pic of my 3 mains and provided them with the following image telling them I wanted something like this but obviously much better done and cooler
And of course gave them reference shots...
I told them I wanted Alpha in the center, kind of powering for battle, and the other two on either side, almost partly using Alpha as a shield, while attacking unseen enemies around them.
Generally I really like the piece they turned out. I do think a few things could be a bit better (yeah, his horns are lopsided I think... if they went with one curve or the other it would be ok but it seems each has it's own curve.) but overall I like it.
One thing I missed was that Caemgen should really be kind of facing the other way. My idea was the three kind of creating a semi circle to face off against the oncoming horde but Caemgen instead looks to be heading more over to Fenian's side than defending his own. I should have caught that when they sent me the initial sketch so I take blame for that... Note to self - Check sketches out on real monitor, never ok based on just seeing on your iPhone!
But despite those two things I still think this is a pretty solid piece, and definitely more in the classical superhero genre than some of my other recent acquisitions...
As for Cae's nose... Heh, you have a thing about that!I actually touched on the topic in Foo's art thread so go read it there if you want my commentary on that, this is already getting too long here...
Quote:The real standout to me in this recent batch is Denby's Fenian (thought his alpha kicks a$$ too). The bolero is well done (almost hints at dragon wings) but her face is what really grabs my attention, exceptional work. Quote:I put him on my watch now as well. Cool find.
I don't think I can take credit for him as my find but I'm happy to be the one who brought him to youBut yeah, like I think I said previously in this thread, I like to occasionally just surf from peoples favorites to favorites, going further and further out trying to find people who aren't totally on the radar for this kind of superhero art...
Quote:P.S. Not to get ahead of the thread here but I went ahead and checked out his DA and he has another piece done of yours already of Caemgen and it totally made me LoL that the way he puts his row of "done" thumbnails right next to the recipients pic makes it look like my pencil sketch and his colored piece are staring each other down hahaha. Quote:
That came in like a day or two after the others. Was sitting in my Art folder waiting to be resized for showing here, uploaded to dA, etc... Guess I kind of got sidetracked.
He asked a bit about each characters personality before doing the arts and I mentioned to him that While Cae looks like a demon he's not and that truthfully he's more the shy, reserved, homebody type and only results to the whole "demon stalker" kind of mode when neccessary. I guess lukedenby went with the more shy side.I could almost see Cae reading a book in that pose... And there should at least have been an outline of a rock he's sitting on, he looks a bit uncomfortable hovering like that
Oh, and speaking of noses... He actually asked me if Cae's nose should be more normal or more beastly as seen in the sketch you did. I told him more beastly, definitely... That you're sketch had it dead on... *shrug* I guess even when they know they still can't get it right.
Still, can't be too upset... I think he did a great job on most other details... I really like what he did on the shoulder pads. Hard to see if you don't have the image large enough but he did a pretty good job on the detail work there...
Ah well, I've done my babbling on my arts for now... lol. I guess your comments gave me a chance to express a few thought that'd been running through my head anyways. -
Gahhhhh!!!!!
Been stuck on my mobile and been unable to properly see this yet!!!!
From what I can make out it looks pretty darn sweet though! Cannot wait to get home and really be able to check it out...
CR - at first I couldn't imagine what you were refraining from saying but now I'm thinking his nose?? Lol... Even when I point out your sketch as the definitive look most artists don't seem to catch the nose and I must admit I've been lax at pointing it out specifically and double checking the sketches (when ones provided) to check on it... Too often I'm too enthralled by the overall pic to check out the small details til it's too late. -
-
Kind of suprised you missed the one, I did include Daybreaker Alpha's eyepiece, antenna and some of his markings...
The other I made way too small and that also meant no detail but it was intended to be Nekko... For some reason I always think of her as tiny, imp sized... But I'm guessing she probably should have been more Amerikatt sized...
Speaking off, I find the idea of a clash between Feral Kitty and Amerikatt highly entertaining... I think the visual could be way cool but I can also hear Ameri chastising Feral for giving cats a bad name and Feral responding quite colorfully in return... It could be a great mini-series! -
Yep, like I said - just a personal preference...
And maybe more just an expectation since they were more "out front" in the sketch. All in all I wish I could hide them altogether on my tank and definitely wouldn't want them in art of his ..
They work great as is and the overall pic is very, very cool. -
Not as good as I could have done with my delux set of Crayola's... But still awesome!!
(note: one part of the above sentence is a lie. and not the part regarding it's awesomeness!) -
-
CR - I wanna respond to a bunch of things ya just said up there but I'm on the mobile while at work right now and it's not the best way to do lengthy posts which include diagrams, pie charts and power point presentations so I'll save the lengthy response for when I get home...
As for powersets... Alpha, Caemgen and Fenian were all originally dark/dark... Alpha a tank and the others scrappers. Cae and Fen both hit 50 and the new Fen (lass instead of girl) is elec/SReflex. Once she is done I am sure I'll move on to a second Cae (probably Kaemgen) with different powersets...
But, as far as the pic... I provided an example of what I was looking for which had the three all using powers... But I'm pretty sure the Alpha I used was a peacebringer version... I'll have to double check... The boots on my example should tell me, main alpha has rocket boots, PB not do much.
Actually just check, must have been PB Alpha...
So while I have a dark/darl of each, the reference shots for the studio pic were from 3 different powersets...
Anyway, this is getting lengthier than intended and I have more to say on that pic later so that's all for now... -
Very cool... Can always count on Taclobanon for great arts!
I'd have maybe liked the skulls to be just a tad more obvious but that's just my personal taste -
Quote:A challenge, yes... Truer to the genre? Errr, what superhero hasn't died and come back somehow or another at least once?
But I think it is both a challenge and truer to the genre ...
But it sounds fun... Unfortunately my time in game tends to be early mornings and I'm mainly a solo type so due to those I'll have to refrain from giving it a try for now but good luck and give us updates on how its going. -
I haven't kept up with the GR info besides what's impossible to avoid... I like suprises
But I think a Clockwork Sally would be very amusing!
I imagine Clockwork Sally would in truth be some kind of jerry-rigged submarine disguised as some ancient monster to scare locals away from peeking in on stuff they shouldn't see... And all would have worked out well too if not for those pesky kids and their dog!! -
-
It's an amazing pic as seen above...
But with the rest of the picture as seen on dA? It's a story.
Very cool and full of awesome. -
More arts! This time by Tim Kelly http://timkelly.deviantart.com/ His stuff is a bit offbeat, reminds me of the old Maxx cartoons on MTV... Anyway, here's his takes on my characters...
Ok, ok... he forgot to change the black dots on Fenian's bandana into shamrocks but I think I can live with that considering how much I love these -
-
Quote:all this love for Firefly.... Not that I blame you. I'm a big Joss Whedon fan. From Buffy to Angel to Firefly to Dollhouse... He's done good stuff! And it's fun how all his characters seem to intermingle between all his shows. heh
As for the monitors, I can totally understand having six... I would definitely not say no to having six.... But then again, my rig would probably implode and create a wormhole if I asked it to think about running two monitors. lol
Monitors are like women - More is better.
Also, I may not know what to do with six at once but I'd have fun trying to find a way to keep them all busy...
