  1. Today the Fashion Police demonstrated their new high security Fashion Jail...

If I am a winner, I permit NC Interactive, Inc. and NCsoft Europe Limited to use my name, likeness, photograph, hometown, and any comments that I may make about myself or this contest that I provide for advertising and promotional activities. 2. Unfortunately I'll most likely be unable to join
  3. No Swanzy Goodness nor CR orangeness yet so you still have time not to be last
  4. What's a TF???

(us soloists miss out on all the fun! But nope, only ever did 2 and that wasn't one of 'em)
  5. Well even I didn't think the newscaster herself was good enough to qualify the pic But as a disclaimer, I should point out that no actual chicks were harmed in the making of the drawing.

Oh come on PowerStream! Let me put your butt that near a Zippo that's almost half your height and we'll see if you're warm or not!!

  8. No problem, was totally a selfish suggestion

I just prefer to jump right to their DA page and check out the new people rather than first having to click over to their place in the list...

Definitely want them in the list though for when I am just idly browsing...

Thanks for the change, tis appreciated.

Hmmm, no idea then unless whoever did thought you would want to see Bayani's latest art and/or that you'd be interested in a discussion which has basically been declared over *shrug*

Still, always nice to see ya

What? You didn't get the memo announcing that Bondage Battle has been made an official event in the 2010 Super-Olympics???

    Edit to add:
Scoots - why can't you just put pencil to paper? That is a totally acceptable art form and the one I'll use myself if I manage something not too embarassing...
  11. I'm going to give one last whack at my idea tommorow after work... That'll give me 17 whole hours to act like I have a modicrum of skill if I go without sleep

Someone has to be first eliminated next month, may as well be me
  12. The cover up until 12:01am to avoid just such BS confusion Airlines also do it that way... But all in all I don't think there was any confusion - Liek I said, I was just bored at work
  13. Midnight stopped meaning the middle of the night somewhere around the time people got watches and learned to tell time

Back when it did mean the middle of the night it was a variable time anyway since it meant midway between dusk and dawn... and that occured at different times depending on the season... So unless we're pulling out almanacs to check sunrise and sunset... Pfffffffffft!
  14. Midnight Friday January 22... The thing I hate about using midnight as a deadline is that technically it is vague... Are we reffering to the midnight that ends the day of Thursday the 21st and begins the day of Friday the 22nd? Or are we meaning the midnight that signals the end of Friday the 22nd and the beginning of Saturday the 23rd??

Common usage would generally dictate that we are talking about the very ladt instant of Friday and not it's very first... But since the date (and thus the day) changes "at midnight" wouldn't friday's midnight really be the one that signals the end of Thursday?

As you can probably tell, I am very bored at work right now...

Anyway, artists have 18 hours and 35 minutes... Ok, ok 42 hours and 35 minutes left.... (I presume)

  16. Hmmm, just how much forcing would the one you like take? Considering that you don't have to show a specific event (or any event) I would think almost any pic could be adapted to the Olympic theme with just some background changes...

To people fighting? Show a building with the rings logo behind them and you have a qualifying pic of a hero preventing a villianous attack on the games...

Posed shot? Again, Olympic logo somewhere and they're doing guard duty...

Two hot chicks making out in the dark? A simple thought bubble from one ranking the other in terms of gold, silver or bronze and you probably qualify...

Ugly male hero sitting in a dirty stall of public toilet? Throw a sports illustrated at his feet with a hot chick on the cover doing an Olympic pose...

A woodchuck eating the entrails of a dead deer? Shame someone littered the forest with an olympic flier...

Seriously, it shouldn't be too hard to adapt anything to the theme since it's actually pretty wide open how you include the theme... If you still can't think of anyway to adapt it give me a sneak peek and I'll come up with something for ya

Then again, if it's a question of not wanting to disrupt the purity of an art to adapt it to fit... Well then, I got nuttin.
  17. Please, there is 23 hours left... Almost. I haven't even started my entry yet!

(actually I started 3 different times but they all ended up crumpled up and in the waste basket...)

Busy at work? What's that like??
(thing that keeps me busiest at work is finding a way to stay awake all night ..)

Anyway, when you do have the time for it I'd be interested in discussing just about any topic regarding art, collecting it, comparing it, whatever... Just start a new thread when you're ready

As for the tone, did you really think it got that bad in here? I don't think anyone was ever intentionally disrespectful or combative. Just seemed to me that since people had strong beliefs and held some things closely that things may have gotten a tad touchy... But for the most part things seemed civil enough to me. If anyone feels differently then I do apologize for any role I may have had in it.

I'm aware that other people don't share that sentiment and that's fine. =) I still don't think it hurts to have some discussion over the matter.
Err, those two comments seem contradictory?

Anyway, I'd be all for a discussion on comparable elements. I'd be all for a discussion comparing artists. Heck, I'd be all for a discussion about why the Ewoks considered C3PO a god but not Chewbakka... I'm all for discussions!

However, I do think the discussion may be more fruitful if it was brought down to the certain elements you leave unnamed rather than the larger overall "goodness" or "betterness" of one gallery to another. It's generally unconstructive for an American and an Brit to talk about which of their countries are better... They're both probably pretty entrenched in their view and unlikely to be willing to change their minds on the subject. However if you get them to discuss the elements of each country, which has a better health care system, school system, welfare system or whatever... Well then you can get lively discussions which may actually change minds and/or influence people...

I'd love for their to be more discussion on these board... Be it elements of galleries, best ways to find new artists or get in line for established ones, how much one can expect the artist be willing to change things after the "final" piece is delivered, if inkers are really just tracers or not, the ethics of having someone else alter a commissioned piece, or whatever topic suits anyones mind at the time... Throw out a topic and I'll discuss it

If someone takes my character on a spin, and they do something that I haven't thought of before and I really like it, maybe I'll head in that direction with what I want.
Not with style per se, but Caemgen is definitely evolving through a similiar process.

Because of old run down comp I have to run game on the second lowest video settings... When I first designed Caemgen I didn't fully realize just how animal/cat like the face I chose was. If ChristopherRobin hadn't done his sketch of Caemgen (my avatar) I probably would have allowed a lot more art to pass before I realized people were doing him way too human and that I much preferred CR's more game true version...

Then when I got Eddy Swan to do a piece of art for Caemgen we talked a lot about the look and stuff we both saw for the character and through those discussions Eddy decided on putting the Celtic Knotwork on Cae's gloves, shoulder pads and boots... Those are now must have's for any future art on Caemgen because they just fit so well...

I'm still kind of looking for Caemgen's wings... Various artists have done them in various ways but none in a way that screamed out to me that they were the definitive look of Cae's wings. Hopefully I'll find that soon as I continue to tell artists to feel free to experiment with that part of him...

But yeah, I can definitely get what you're saying about evolving a characters look and style through a kind of trial and error...

I have no disagreement with this at all... And that's partly why I encourage people to speak their thoughts about the art in my little commission corner. Frankly it was through people critiques that I am now more forceful about demanding certain things be present in the art I buy... Mainly regarding Caemgen but without the critiques I probably would have continued being less vocal about my specific wants...

    Quote:
To me, it is partly a competition, because when the artists I've been following for a long time open up small commission windows, it's the other collectors I'm jockeying for a spot in line against. Which can be a bit fun, minor aggravations aside. I feel that by making my collection and approach look more polished is what opens the door with artists who are closed for commissions or have full lists. I'd say a third of my collection is from artists who made exceptions because of the way I conduct my process. If others don't feel it's a competition...well that's ok.
Well no worries about competition from me, I pretty much only approach those who are obviously open. I'm just not pushy enough (and I don't mean pushy in a bad way) to try to get artists to make extra room for me... I'll just wait patiently and strike when I can and/or find alternative artists. Then again, I'm not seeking to get art from "name" artists so I think waiting patiently will work just fine for me.

    Quote:
I'm still going to strive to build the better collection, because I do still think about transitioning into the field of illustration in some manner some day. I do respect the other collectors here as the quality stuff gathered on their ends pushes me to improve my knowledge and find more art.
I have a small problem with the idea of a "better" gallery because, in my opinion, the goodness of a gallery is solely determined by the purpose of the gallery. My gallery is for art of my characters that I like... Feel free to try to build a better gallery than mine in that regard but it would require you having lots of art done of my trio of characters

Now if you want to say "build a better quality collection" then that opens us up to debates on what defines quality...

"Build the most professional collection" would maybe cut out a lot of debate, specially if you qualified it as "comic book style professional" or such but this being art there is still room for debate...

    *shrug*

    Quote:
And while yes, there's no one way to build a gallery (and to each their own), I personally believe that some ways yield more positive results than others and the galleries that speak for themselves.
And again we run into the stumbling block of what you mean by positive results... Positive results for me and my gallery is arts or my trio I enjoy. Get the most respected artists you want to draw Bayani and my gallery will still have more positive results for me... Hire them to draw Caemgen, Fenian and Alpha though and I may just concede your gallery has more positive results

    Quote:
    *edit*

I disagree with the idea of being competitive over it being nonsense. The gallery considered as a whole, can say alot about the collector's history, efforts and knowledge about art. It can also play an important part in selling the character(s), emphasizing certain elements of a particular character (or collector) to make them ultimately more compelling or appealing.
Again... You are going on the premise that the owners of other galleries care what they say about their history, effort or knowledge about art. I could care less. My gallery is for my enjoyment. If others happen to enjoy it as well then great but I certainly am not building it for their pleasure, to express my knowledge of art, artists or to prove I worked hard at building it...

I have plenty of respect for your goals for your gallery and I wish you luck in your goals and look forward to watching as you build it... It's just that my goals for my gallery are entirely selfish and independant from what other people think of it...

Still, compete all you want. If having that view of the process is what drives you, what gives extra joy to it for you, then you would be silly not to continue viewing it that way. I just kind of look at it as if you were a runner on a treadmill... Try to beat someone elses time in a 10k if you wish... The fact that they're not racing against you has no bearing on your ability to race against them...

(And for clarities sake... While I "made this personal" I am not making this personal. I referred to my aims, goals and gallery in a basically general way to just express that others have different goals, aims, desires, etc... I just used myself as an example for the ease of it...)

And as a final note... Through these discussions, through reading the comic you had made, and through various other things... I am now considering aiming at least part of my future commissions towards telling a story. I don't think I'll go the comic book route per se, I'm thinking more along the lines of writing a story and the commissions being the illustrations for it... But just goes to show that discussions and other people galleries and such can influence other people and give them ideas...

  24. Err, I just used debate because I wanted to avoid the word arguement, which I didn't think was going on but felt it was near the edges of? I suppose I should have just said discussion...

But ya, pretty much everything I have read so far boils down to "I like the way I'm doing things. I have no problem with how you are doings things." As such I'm wondering how this even evolved into a discussion

To each their own and all that jazz...
