I tuned in but I'm probably off the comp soon
Anyways, I was hoping for a 10 song string of classic Seseme Street tunes... C is for Cookie, Rebel L, that kind of thing. -
Just want to remind everyone how I am tabulating... The first votes are all counted against each other to select a winner out of the first votes. Then the second votes are counted against each other to choose the second winner.
Doing a quick count there does seem to be a leader for the first place win but it's still only a 3 vote lead - definitely not insurmountable.
On the second place voting, things are much tighter. My count has only 3 votes seperating 1st and last... Just a 1 vote margin between first and second.
Still plenty of time left for swings in the voting...
(by the by, I cannot prevent anyone from counting up votes themselves before making their decision but I'm glad to see nobody has posted a running tally and I hope it stays that way. IMO a tally would influence people on who to vote for and/or wether or not to vote.) -
Quote:I still think a good compromise would be to have Sales & Deals be the final part of The Network.
I saw it as an extension to the Network thread when i created it. Like here are all these artists that take commissions and if you go here, here are the ones having a sale or a deal. Kind of confusing message to say that The Network is a valuable resource and tool to have resembling a "yellow pages" and then to say that the sales and deal thread isn't. They both basicly do the same thing no?
Tell you what, i am going to have a poll thread and put it to the community. If the majority of the community says that a "Sales and Deals" thread is not welcomed in the community then i will delete that thread and just keep it going on DA. Fair?
People go to the Network when looking for artists already, right? So they can then check out the current deals at the same time... So the info would be available.
At the same time, we wouldn't have the BBQ billboard in the food court problem. We wouldn't have the "impulse" buyers see the thread, see a sale and jump on it rather than look around at all that is available...
Honestly I can totally understand both sides on this one andthink that may work for both. -
Gratz Starwind!!
You may now permanently move to this thread: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...76#post2323776 -
The Daybreak Patrol went more for a similiar theme than a hard and fast uniform...
-
I sent several pm's asking people who used (or quoted) actual dollar amounts to please edit them out... Hopefully I hit them all.

Quote:I see nothing in that rule that mentions alive or dead... Answering the phone is just for style points.
The finish line will be the concrete slab of the building with the police phone. The winning racer must enter the chain linked fence area onto the concrete slab...go ahead and answer the phone for style points. I'd say if they made it onto the concrete slab they made it onto the slab. Corpse flinging for the win!

Still happening????
I really should DL the test thingy just so I can pop in if I ever am around for such... Probbly too late now. Either the DL would take too long or I'd pass out before it finished anyway -
If there were words after the picture of....err, headphones... I certainly didn't see them...

Quote:So far I hired... errr.. give me a second to count, it's not easy when drunk... 6 artists? Paid upfront with 4 and waited on the other 2 because that's what they wanted. Maybe it's naive but I've been trusting so far and figure I'll remain that way in this arena until I get burned. My biggest concern in this area is a) artists taking money but not delivering, and b) people commissioning but not paying. Other than that, it's all opinion.
Of the 6 I have finished product from 1, at least initial rough sketches from 3 and one of the last two was too recent a hire to expect anything from yet... The final one has been a bit quiet but I am not worrying - They've had distractions plus I'm a pretty patient sort of chap.
And though I am by no means worried... What does one do when stiffed on a piece? From either side of the hire? Is there a black list somewhere? A board where people could post their complaints? I kind of assume someone here ranting that they got stiffed on a commission on these board would be frowned on by the mods... -
-
I'd look now but I be drunk and I doubt that would help my looking abilities...

Missed a couple things I wanted to respond to earlier...
One of my favorite stories about was one I saw on TV about a guy who draws money. Cash. American currency. And buys stuff with it!
He does the art right there in front of people so they know it's not real... But it's amazingly detailed and realistic... He'll go into a normal store and try to buy groceries and stuff with it. Was very cool... Depending just how much he was trying to buy I just might let him if it was my place... (Saw this years and years ago... when US money was just one color. No idea on what artists name was...)
Quote:Originally Posted by SuichiroI personally charge only X-Y dollars for commissions, because I do not want to use it as a money source.
I see nothing wrong with charging less because it's something you enjoy doing. I say bravo for giving the less monied a chance at great arts!
I would consider suggesting charging more "what it's worth" occasionally... Maybe some months earn yourself some cash, others bring your art to the masses. I see problems with that but something could probably be worked out...
I wouldn't suggest that because I think you are undervaluing yourself or such but merely because most people need money and if you can earn a bit of extra scratch doing what you love occasionally I see nothing wrong with that.
Of course if you don't need the money/have plenty to spare then nevermind
Quote:Originally Posted by Eddy Swanas for something else FD mentioned in the other thread about folks who give free art to the community and earning respect before being fully embraced and promoted by the community I agree to a point but sometimes one can't resist the shiny toy's on DA sometimes. I think all of the artist's who actually frequent the boards have gifted art I'd love to have the time myself to gift more and do a second sketch a day thread but in my current circumstances its just not on the cards. but anyway, I'm getting sidetracked.
Nobody should have to give anything for free. Art takes time, effort and money (either through supplies or potential lost time working for paying customers.) It's great if they can donate occasionally but if not that's cool by me too.
ok, I think I'm caught up with all my inane comments -
Quote:I'll give you enough artistic license to only vote once I suppose...I can only vote for Jophiel's Lounge Crooner. I happen to know how fun this character is to work on, so want Foo to be blessed with him =)
Don't count it if you don't want to, but that's my opinion! -
Somehow I can easily imagine a big News Expose: The World Grows Tired, Who Do We Blame?
-
Hmmm, I may avoid any future contests where I have to make a choice personally. It's not easy! Not only do I have to consider what pictures I would most like to see but I also cannot help but worry about hurt feeling a bit.
Much simpler to leave it all up to chance...
I debated a bit with myself on whether or not to explain why I didn't choose those I left out. It was never because the characters weren't cool or that I didn't think thy could make a good scene... All were cool and had lots of artistic potential. So I had to make decisions on other factors... Some probably more fair than others. To be honest, the more active posters in this forum probably got a little extra consideration. These contests are meant to reward those who make reading this forum interesting thus I don't think that is totally unfair. Though I tried not to let that exclude anyone outright and I hope the "less known" entrants stick around the forums and enter if/WHEN I do another contest...
Screw it. I'll be a bit specific why some entrants didn't get chosen. Hopefully they can understand my thoughts and if they don't agree then I'm sorry but I had to choose somehow...
Psygon - I really like your entry but I couldn't help but think it would come off more cartoony than I was going for here. One of my future contests may just have to be on the more amusing side just so maybe we can get this one done eventually(by the by, I don't know if I ever posted in your thread but I do enjoy seeing the cutes!)
Thor's Assassin - Thor's_Assassin: Thor's Assassin & Daybreaker Alpha... I think this would make a good two heroes against all comers kind of pic... To be honest, you got cut out at the very last minute. I love the idea of the pic and was going to include it but I was limiting it to 6 and had 7 entries. I decided another reason I was doing these contests was to maybe bring art to those who may not have it yet and that became a deciding factorI hope you understand and I promise not to hold your collection against you next time.
Oathbound - I specially liked you're second suggestion with Oathy being kind of transparent and protecting Fenian even though she didn't know he was there... I can't give a good reason why you didn't make the cutMaybe subconsciously there just being a link to the pic instead of in the post made it stand out less? (Honestly didn't notice that there was a link until I started the judging...) Wish I had a real (or better) reason to give.
Bubbawheat - Part of the reason you didn't make the cut is that I like some of your other Matchstick toons better than this one... Not sure if that's fair, since I don't know everyone elses toons, but I was hoping you'd do a second entry with one of my more favorite ones before the deadline... Throw in the fact you won another of my contests and I'm afraid I found it a bit too easy to cut ya. Sorry.
Dark Shade - Your first entry didn't describe the scene betwen the two of them at all and the second only had the sig toons as reference (and no actual choice between 2...) It's a shame you were too busy to fully fill out the entry as I like the look of Spinette and I think I could have gotten into Tormentia battling Alpha. Unfortunately the lack of complete entry made it a bit too easy to exclude you from the final. Hopefully you'll be around for net time
Again, maybe the reasons aren't exactly fair... They're definitely biased to my personal tastes (which is unavoidable) and I'm still not sure if I'd be better off leavng out the explanations or not... But at the end I had to make a decision and faced with so many cool possibilities I had to decide somehow. Again, sorry if any feelings are hurt...
Ok, enough bad news... Let's list the finalists (and which of their entries made it) and then explain the voting...
Finalists:
VexXxa: VexXxa & Caemgen... Would have to modify the scene a bit, Caemgen's a hero and wouldn't be fighting Statesman, but I think the red with wings could match up well with the pink with wings
Suggested Scene: Well I must say that Caemgen and VexXxa would work together quite well fighting side by side against Statesman and Sister Psyche! I can just see VexXxa almost having Statesman down when Caemgen sneaks in a KS with a wink and smile at VeX. Such a rascal, that Caemgen!
Pyro_Nympho: Natrix & Fenian Girl... A bit of a cat fight with looks of potential naughtiness to come are always fun to see
Suggested Scene: I see Natrix paired with Fenian Girl, struggling to gain dominace over the other, while exchanging spankings...both of their little bottoms are glowing red, but they're both enjoying the battle, grinning, and coming ever so close to kissing.
Calash: Ocularu & Caemgen... hovering mid-air... both readying a strike against the other. Could be a very cool pic.
Suggested Scene: Ocularu and Caemgen in the air over some buildings, say Kings Row for background. Mistrust in each of there eyes the charge to strike. Ocularu has a fist of dark lighting and is swinging as Caemgen is countering with his own attack.
PeteyCat: Hex Sign & Fenian Girl... Two magic girls battling? What's not to love?
Suggested Scene: The middle of a fight somewhere over Paragon, say Steel Canyon or Talos. Hex, whose magic comes entirely from spells and symbols she's learned, throwing out everything she can think of to avoid being overpowered by Fenian Girl's more "natural" magic.
EnnVee: Trinity Jaded & Caemgen... Hero protecting hero is always a powerful piece... Throw in one looks like a demon and the other an angel and I very much like the concept...
Suggested Scene: I would love to see Trinity Jaded placed with Caemgen. The scene is nearing the end of an intense battle Trinity is laying on the ground with an injured wing, Caemgen is standing over her, slightly bent down, with his hand on her shoulder and his wings spread wide to protect them both from falling debris.
Jophiel: Lounge Crooner & Fenian Girl... This has hilarious potential. The sleezeball hitting on the young hottie... Her expression saying "Get me the hell out of here!" but her being to sweet to actually say it out loud... Heh.
Suggested Scene: FenianGirl should be at Pocket D, getting hit upon by the Lounge Crooner
Hmph. Just noticed I didn't include one choice using Daybreaker Alpha... *shrug* Guess he'll have to star next time...
Voting Rules:You CANNOT vote for your own entry.
And that's about all I can think of... Remember, vote twice (list as first and second please... And in the same post.) Good luck to all and thanks for entering and/or voting
Everyone gets two votes. The two cannot be used for the same entry twice. The first votes will be tallied seperate from the second. This is to make sure that the first and second most popular choices get picked rather than the first winning and second being passed over because it was everyones second choice but nobodies first...
Anyone can vote whether entered in the contest, a regular on the forum, or just a casual passer by.
Foo's votes count double - He has to do the art after all
I'll break any ties... But lets hope it doesn't come to that. My choices were hard enough already...
Voting will close some time Friday... Depending when I get to it.
I ask that everyone vote for the two they think would make the best scene and not make this a populaity contest...
I don't get a vote unless it ends in the previously stated tie... I'll be bound to whatever the masses decide
-
Are you so tired your seeing things or is that some wird Australian delicacy that I probably don't want to know any more about????

The Bills suck to bad at this point to ever leave...
Oh. wait a minute. You're not talking football... Nevermind.

So it maybe should have been sent via pm..I dunno. Sometimes I think it's worth it to throw comments like that out there in front of the community to see how people respond and get a sense of where the current community stands. Sorry if it rubbed anyone the wrong way.
Quote:Originally Posted by FrozenDeathNow let's use Foo's sale as an example. "Hey guys, check it out--my car died so I'm having a sale." What if I went on DA and found someone with a similar style, holding a similar sale because they broke their leg and came back and advertised it here ? I personally don't think that's an upstanding thing to do another member of this community. That's how I personally feel about the deal thread. I'm completely fine with people not agreeing with me, but I felt I should throw it out there.
If it was done as an aid to the community who want to buy arts (like I believe TA's is) then I wouldn't have a problem with it.
Personally, I would jump on Foo's sale first because he's a local. Similiar style and price, I'll buy in the community.
But I can sort of see the argument that TA is leading people away form local artists... But I guess I just figure freedom of choice is more important than keeping those who haven't found DA a captive audience.
Maybe it would be better if the Sales and Deals were made as an addition to the Resource thread... That way it would be available but wouldn't neccessarily be a huge glowing sign luring people to it... Yet at the same time be available to those actively seeking artists... Seems that it might be a compromise to me. -
Heh, took off tonight but still can't make the test run... Have tickets to the hockey game and even if it's still going when I get home I'll likely as not be inebriated.

Quote:As I was writing the above ramble I had no completed commissions... Though I did recieve Mr. Swan's brilliant piece before I posted. (I'd link it but it's linked in his thread already and I haven't yet put on my own DA page...)Edit: Also it's not entirely true that you have 12 pieces in the pipeline and nothing completed yet... you do have one finished piece (though it isn't full length or in color).
But, I do believe you're talking about the masterpiece I turned into my avatar...While I love that and think it would be tough for anyone to upsurp it's place as the definitive face of Caemgen, it is not a commission. That was a gift art and as such will always have a special greatness to it that a paid for work wouldn't
(ok, ok [/sappyness])
Maybe I'm being nitpicky? But you know I think it's awesome, I just didn't include that in the list since it wasn't for hire work.
And by the by, I didn't intend the comment about stuff in the pipeline but nothing done yet to mean impatience at all.... I've no problem with the wait, I just was thinking about how much I purchased in so short a time.
Juggertha - I don't believe there are many around who wouldn't recognize your right to call yourself an artist
As for perfection in pieces... I doubt anyone can claim to have achieved it. I'm sure there is not a piece of art that someone couldn't find some flaw or fault with.
Jophiel - I think the "mental budget" concept is very true. No matter how great the artist and how worth they are the price they are asking... There's only so much I will spend on art for a character in a game.
As for contact with artists, I don't pay too much attention to sigs either. I have them turned on and I enjoy seeing them... And they may get me to check out a gallery. But I'm more likely to notice a "local artist" through them posting to show off their latest or through the Fan Art Challenge or that kind of thing. Actual interaction on boards... Not that I have to chat with them but it's nice to see them active.
Eddy & CR - Double XP is over - you may commence your posting
Suichiro - You are correct. Every artist will be different just as every customer. Heck, every deal. I've already gone from "I want a pose like this" and providing examples to "Choose which character you wnat and have fun." I suppose it would be intereting to see why some buyers are so loose or strict with what they want and why some artists enjoy/deon't enjoy the freedom to cut loose... -
I've been stuck working the overnights for the last 10 years... I'm always tired!

Quote:+1That's why I think Rep is a ridiculous system. It's completely unreliable and has no bearing on anything real in the slightest bit. I mean look at me, I have positive rep? That's obviously no indication of the quality of content I have as a poster.
That being said, if you want rep, I'll give it to you whenever I can, though you can just go to one of the rep farming threads in the forum game section.
Except... err, there are Rep Farming threads????
Gawd, I'm glad I don't stray far from this forum! -
I think commentary got lost in the double xp excitement
I really like the moodiness of this piece... It's almost inviting you to write your own story as to what he's feeling and why.
