  1. Hobbit Up just didn't have the same ring to it... Sounded like he'd go skipping down the lane or some such.

And I must shamefully admit I was thinking Bilbo, not Frodo... The hockey game was on and I was distracted. Frodo generally took on what he had to much quicker than Bilbo. Sorry Frodo.

And TA - Nice job of editing the Network. One thing you may want to consider (not that you need even more work to do) is to indicate who the local people are on these boards. Maybe those who aren't as much as a newbie around here as I am recognize who is who... And maybe they'd rather their CoH screenname not be attached... But I'm thinking that when I'm hiring local I'd like to have some clue who they are Just a thought...
  2. I'm even lazier than Crescent...

Plus I'm kind of thinking of actually taking a crack at doing something good... but who knows, I may end up with a slow day at work again soon
  3. All in all, when I started this thread, the hope was that it could turn into a discussion about commissions, the commissioning process and the like. Possibly turn into a place where people who have never bought art before could look to find out just how the process goes, what to expect, etc...

    That obviously didn't happen.

As it became more and more a debate thread I was enoying it - I like a good arguement from time to time so long as it doesn't devolve into personal attacks and sniping at one another.

    That obviously did happen.

Ah well, it's the internet, what can you really expect? Anyway I'll not be participating in the more argumentative portions of this thread again, I just see too much potential for hard feelings and grudges to develope at this point. If it happens to sway back into more gentile discussions the grand... If not, hopefully the thread can wither and die before anyone gets too badly offended by anything or anyone else...

  6. To try to keep this thread from just becoming an argument thread, I have a question for the artists:

When you've been commissioned and send out a rough sketch for approval to the buyer, how do you feel about them sharing the sketch with others?

I'm thinking more sharing with a couple friends privately rather than posting publicly but I'd be interested in whatever...
  7. Alrighty, since voting seems to have dried up and it is Friday I guess I may as well end this.

    The winners are:

1st vote winner - EnnVee pairing up Trinity Jaded with Caemgen

2nd vote winner - PeteyCat pairing Hex Sign with Fenian Girl

    Congratulations to both!

If both winners would contact the Foo with a link to some good reference pics to their character and let me know once you have it would be appreciated You can PM the Foo here, hit him up on Deviant Art http://evilmark.deviantart.com/ or email him... err, don't have his email off hand but I believe he mentions it in the other contest thread... o.0

    Minor notes:
For those at home who are counting themselves I wanted to clarify how I handled Wassy's vote. Wassy only voted for Johpiel/Lounge Crooner and I said I'd allow it due to their artistic temperment I never quite decided how to handle it though... A first place vote? A first and second place vote? Well, as a first place vote it had no effect on the standings so it didn't matter. As a second place vote it put Jophiel into a tie with PeteyCat... Blech, I hate dilemas... But I did say I would decide ties and the easiest way to solve the dilema is to side on the side of PeteyCat.

Gray Huntress voted via DA before she returned. Her votes didn't end up influencing the winners otherwise I would have screenshot it to show or made her post before I ended thing...

And that should be it... Congrats again to the winners and please send those references to Foo!

But frankly the artist doesn't know what I do for a living and thus doesn't know. Just as someone who doesn't do art doesn't know how much time, effort, etc is spent at that. *shrug*

The point is that the artist gives up time to create the art. The buyer gives up time to earn money to purchase the art. If both agree on what they consider a fair trade then... well, it's a fair trade. To suggest one persons time is more precious than anothers, to me, is wrong.

It gets worse when you see that there's quite a few artists that freely give away their art here. Do you freely give away your money? I don't see free money threads here on the forums. If you really wanted to compare the two, then that's what would need to happen to make it equal.
I have given money away on more than one occasion. If you wanted to limit it to instances that had threads on this board then I'd point at my several Caemgen's Commission Contest threads. I it's equal after all? (I suppose one could nitpic that it wasn't straight up cash involved but *shrug* whatever)

Besides those, I have given money away plenty of times... Generally it has been to people I have known in real life, to what I considered worthy charities, to political campaigns, to bums on the street... But there has been a few times I gave money to people I had never met who I believed needed it. (I'm a freaking saint, come to think of it...)

The thing about those times I've given away that money... It never made me think my time was more precious than anyone elses, that I was better than anyone else, or that I deserved extra consideration... When I make a gift of something, be it cash or otherwise, it is a gift pure and simple.
  9. I suppose if I was a deep, insightful person full of wisdom and depth I'd say something about how the fear of something is always worse than the facing of it or some crap...

But deep down inside I'm basically as shallow as a dried out wading pool so I'll just say Nice Job!
  10. What I'd like to most see is it all in TA's Network. I'd love to see the very first post dedicated to local's and then somewhere in there the latest deals as well... I agre that too many ad stickies isn't the best option.

Anyway, I've been posting too much Three days off in a row has got me chatty... Maybe I'll go level for a while
  11. Caemgen

    Buy This

I'd buy your finali book at the end of this project based on that sketch alone...

Now excuse me while I go drool...
  12. I see the idea as less about advertising and more as just stating availability.

I, for one, wouldn't presume to just contact someone I saw was good at art and inquire if they took commissions... I'm just not that outgoing/pushy/whatever... but if there's a link or such somewhere that says they are then coolio.

Anyway, Gray, what's you're next step? Meaning are you going to contact the artists and see if they want inclusion or should the artists contact you or post here?

And when you are making it, a new thread may be better... Something nice and clean and without my chatter all over it
  13. Caemgen

    Epic Screenie

Very cool works... I'm tempted to try to get some shots and see what you can do but except for grabbing pics of my characters in the costume creator I suck big at getting screenshots worth seeing.

True and that is a big, welcome benefit...

Assuming it either gets stickied or topped.
  15. Not sure if it's better as a seperate thread or if maybe it would work better if Local Artists were the top part of the Network?? But either way, I will be keeping an eye on it!!

And WOOT! on you being back!

Similarly, I wouldn’t want any of my appreciator friends to view artists as vending machines of art, where the transaction is as simple as dropping in some spare change. (Don’t worry, Caem and Suichiro, I’m not pointing you out as guilty, I’m just using your quotes to help build my case).
No worries But at the same time I will point out that since they are not vending machines they do not all drop the same products. If they all distributed Ho-Ho's then there would never been any reason to go outside here... But sometimes you just want a Little Debbie...

Keeping community in mind, I might also suggest not immediately declaring a sale if they’re in need of assistance due to a string of bad luck that has financially crippled them. Just sending out the emergency signal is sufficient enough for me to lend a hand, and I think others would as well. If some people have noticed the queues of LJ and John Printemps (externally, rhardo as well), then they’d notice I had purchased a significant portion of both their lines (10 from LJ, 15 from John). This could be interpreted in two ways:

1). I’m a savage art collector who rabidly assaulted both artists when they declared their sale because I’m a selfish individual who is severely addicted to collecting art for myself. And now they’re bound in my chains as I siphon away their time and energy.

2). I saw they needed help. As such, I offered as much assistance as I could spare to grant a significant portion of financial aid. In the process of this transaction, I made sure to inquire if they were absolutely sure they were ready for what I was purchasing, I was also concerned about how far they had lowered their prices and how large of a queue they had opened. Similarly with Foo, I told him we’d be willing to pay his standard fare without the sale. I let them know I wasn’t setting a deadline and I wanted them to take as long as they wanted, and if they needed a break to take it. I wasn’t going to disappear off the face of the Earth.
Heck, just being clear on when you're open for commissions would probably get people a bit of a line People may buy more if it's a sale but I don't think I've seen anyone announce they were open and have to beg for customers.

And depending on just how she went about siphoning, if I was an artist I just may pick option 1

    Quote:
The answer is option 2 by the way. The reason I went into that story was because I wanted to assure our local artists our community isn’t here to take advantage of the fruits of their labours. For the most part, I believe we recognize you are indeed a human being (still confused about Foo), your time is as precious as ours, and most importantly…
And our time is as precious as yours... Not all of the non-artists may understand just how long and how much effot it takes you to create the arts but then again the artists cannot know how much time and effort went into the buyer to making the money to purchase - how many hours they may have worked for it, what they may be scrimping on that month to get it. Can we just all assume everyones time is precious whether it be spent doing art, working some job they probably hate or spending time with family and friends?

    Quote:
Sorry for going on for so long…I’m just concerned. I wouldn’t want a rift to form between community artists and appreciators because suppositions were allowed to take hold and tear everyone apart. We are not separate…we are intertwined, moving amongst each other rather than standing along borders…like a pit of serpents…or an orgy.
Errr, I'll be in my bunk....

But seriously... have you seen my rambles? You do not have to worry about the length of your post at all!
  17. I, for one, have no problem with her not keeping them one...

And quite frankly, at the VERY least, anyone recieving gift art does owe the artist a thank you. Heartfelt would be preferred but the least they could do is fake it...
  19. Ok, a few topics that I think could be discussed... Comments below not neccessarily my view but rather to spur the discussion.

Do we non artists owe anything to the artists around here?

If the artists play the game I assume they like the game. If they don't play the game but rather pay the fee so that they can post on the boards and be a part of the community then really their being part of the boards is either because they like the community that much or because they see it as part of their advertising budget. Does any of that require the non artists to give them extra consideration?

If local artists are given (and/or are owed) special consideration, are the non artists owed the same by the artists?

If we non artists should give preferential treatment to the local artists, can't we expect the same back? If we were to not allow such things as the Netweork resource or the Art Deals then can we demand the artists don't work for anyone outside the boards? Or that we at least get cheaper rates or bumped up the que or something?

If an artists is doing free art to get customers then is it the same as gift art?

Not referring to the one who was named earlier (or any specific person) but if Artist X does a bunch of free art to show off their skills with the hope of gaining customers then it's not gift art, is it? It's advertising. If it's advertising then they should take into consideration how much time they have to spend on their ads to draw customers when setting their commissions rate just like McDonalds takes advertising budget into consideration when setting the price of a McFlurry. If it is indeed Gift Art then they shouldn't consider time spent on it in any connection to their commissions nor should the rest of us... Should they?

If a local artist isn't open for business do they have the right to complain if outsiders hired or advertised?

Not to make this personal at all but of No voters in the poll thread at least one was on break when I was looking to hire out work, one had a large prject in the works and it was unclear if they were open for other work and I think two others I'm not really sure if they're open to commissions or not? (If they are, be more obvious people!) If people can't hire local are they supposed to wait?

Are we creating a divide in the community between artists and non?

Writing up the above it almost seems to me that I'm on the offensive against artists (I totally am not!) and I can also see how some could take some previous comments the wrong way... I'm always for lively discussion and heated debate but, specially on the internet between people who don't REALLY know each other, that can quickly lead to misunderstandings, offense taken and turning ugly... Are we getting close to that in this part of the discussion and is there a way to avoid it other than just shutting off this part of the topic? (there were other topics at one point in this thread, weren't there?)
  20. Very cool...

But I'm wondering if you have the same secret ingrediant as KFC... Cause the more I see your artz the more I'm liking them. It's kind of addictive like that.
  21. Come home to The Time Warp... oddly disturbing.
  22. Heading out to go see Zombieland....

When I come back, if you're still on, I'm gunna want a bunch of zombie-ish songs... No idea what they'd be but you can come up with a few I'm sure
  23. Xzero45 gave me this:
    Quote:
At a young age Sirus Flint had always been a bully. He used force and persuasion to get what he wanted, causing him to get into trouble numerous times. His superhero father, who had the ability to create and control fire, was hardly around and his mother had passed away when Sirus was 6. This caused him to feel very detached from his family, to the point that he left home at the age of 14 and snuck onboard various ships until he found himself in the Etoile Islands.

He joined a gang, but that was short-lived as an Infected thug attacked him in an alley way one day. The thug, having more strength than Sirus, nearly killed the young teenager until his hereditary powers inherited from his father had kicked in, allowing him to easily burn the thug alive. The Longbow that were stationed in the area heard about the super-powered threat and proceeded to arrest Sirus before he could make it back to his gang. He spent two years in the Zig, until he became a part of a small breakout and managed to escape.

Sirus traveled the world, gaining power and notoriety until, at the age of 24, he returned to the Rogue Islands, promising to stir things up a great deal. Now 27, Sirus, a.k.a. X-zero, has become an incredibly powerful super villain with a wealth of items and money gained from his various criminal exploits. Like all good villains, his goals involve global domination and a new world order.

I decided to take the history of the character and turn it upside down...

At a young age Sirus Flint had always been a target for bullies. At a young age he learned to use wile and persuasion to overcome his tormenters and get what he wanted, often tricking his former tormentors into taking the fall for plans he masterminded. His superhero father, who had the ability to create and control fire, was hardly around and his mother had passed away when Sirus was 6. This caused him to feel very detached from his family, to the point that he left home at the age of 14 and snuck onboard various cruise ships, using his guile and wits to pass as a rich, pampered customer until he found himself in the Etoile Islands.

Sirus didn't find the denizens of Etoile as easy to influence and trick. For his own safety he joined a gang and after studying the unique hierachy and politics of the group he positioned himself to be the brains of the operation, pulling the strings of the operation through the puppet the old leader had become. This new life was relatively short lived as an Infected thug attacked him in an alley way one day. He spent two years in the Zig, until he was swept up in a small breakout and managed to escape.

Sirus traveled the world once more, gaining power through his wits and brains and avoiding notoriety. Once more he set himself up as the brains behind powerful figures. The few times his wits and trickery did not allow him to achieve the results he wanted he had no qualms about resorting to a more physical form of persuasion.

At the age of 24, he returned to the Rogue Islands with plans of stirring up the power structure once more. Now 27, Sirus, a.k.a. X-zero, has become an incredibly rich and powerful super villain with a goons and henchman at the ready to carry out his various criminal schemes. Sirus believes that real power is the control of others but accepts the needs to occasionally get his own hands dirty. Like all good villains, his goals involve global domination and a new world order.

Quite simply I decided to re-imagine the character as super villian more akin to a Kingpin or Lex Luthor. Why get down in the much when you can convince others to do it for you? Still, he remains quite capable of handling thims himself in a pinch. As such, I went for a simplified business like image but with a bit of edge. The work boots are handy to have sycophants kiss or to kick in the head of one who angers you (after your henchman have beat them down for you.) The hands show a bit of jail tats which are a constant reminder of the power structure he strives to overthrown.

Sorry if this isn't quite the take you were hoping for on him...
  24. Schoolhouse Rock did indeed rock... But I always had a dream of a punk band doing cover songs to Sesema Street - Maybe subtly adjusting the lyrics a bit as well.
