I used a very cheap carving kit ($4 at Walmart) and printed a design off the Internet. Not at all "mad carvin skillz". Just took a little research, a little bit more patience and a lot of dedication..

. In all seriousness though, the effort was still there, and it did take me time to carve. However I will accept whatever Foo decides.
I could trace someone elses art to get the pose and body right and such then modify it to my own vision of costume and such... I could even think it way cool and put on my wall... But I wouldn't enter a contest with it. Personally, for myself and myself only, I would look at the pumpkin pattern the same way. It's probably cause I do have some meager art skills and it's my own darn fault for not polishing them up and getting as good as I could be... but since I know I could do a semi decent job on my own on such things, that I'm just too lazy to do it, I wouldn't feel right taking "shortcuts" and entering it into a contest.
And again, I really do not mean to cast any aspersions... (is that the word? a bit drunk and fuzzy atm...) As I read the rules you are totally valid in your use of such so I have absolutely no problem with you doing so...
I was just saying that I knew some people would come out with some kick butt Jack-O's, whether through singular effort or through use of helping tools, and I further knew I wouldn't really put in enough effort to even come close to competing... So anyway, instead of entering I had a bit of fun with the contest with doing my amusing little during work doodle up there somewhere... If I wasn't going to put in the effort to actually enter I figured I could at least participate in an amusing way is all...
Even using a pattern you definitely did use more patience and dedication than I was willing to and for that, win or lose, I definitely applaude you. -
These show exactly why I didn't even consider entering... Some peeps have mad carvin skillz and creativity. I am not those peeps

Very nice piece... What I find most impressive is that even though I can right away see a couple things I think should be better I know you're just getting started at this and that they will get better. And while it's a very good work to begin with it only promises better to come.

If you haven't already, go check out Swanzy's critique on DA on this piece. He said what I was getting at in ways I just couldn't since I'm not an artist or user of the tools but he did a fabulous job showing just how much greater this piece could be than it already is with more work put into it with the right tools.
And Eddy, great job on the critique and example both on Starwind's piece here and the one you did on the VexXxa piece! -

Pfft, it's not an entry. 1) it's not a Jack-o-Lantern but rather a poor drawing of one... Ok, three. 2) if it was an entry I would lose to whatever last minute carver out there does enter and I hate losing. 3) I didn't provide a description of my concept as required. (trying to suck up by using Foo's avatar and the Soul Kitten hardly seems like winning concept material...)
but hopefully it will spur those who aren't risking life and limb by carving into doing so! -
I'm at work. Bored. I got to doodling and eventually it turned into what is below. Unfortunately I am limited by my poor skills and lack of many art type supplies at work so this is the best I can do for now...
If the pic comes out too poorly I will scan and re upload once home but I'm still enjoying playing with new iPhone so figured I would snap a pic and figure out how to upload to photobucket
also, I know this doesn't quite qualify for the contest (but I would seriously risk digits if I tried to carve a pumpkin) so just consider it a meager thank you for the contest... Plus I couldn't think of anywhere else to post it

Eddy, she looks great and wether intentional or not there seems to be a sadness about her which really kind of fits the character - awesome! -
General knowledge - can ya make it peanuts at least? I like peanuts.
Starwind - is brown closer to original character? I was pretty much just going by the art. Plus, this was merely a test of costume creator and not for something I am actually playing... If it was for a real character though, I think your suggestion would probably work better than what I did.
Cash - create away, my dear. I'd love to see if you could wrangle the costume creator into a closer approximation.
Swanzy - hmmm, that would likely fall within my perv limits... They are close to limitless after all...
