  1. To be fair I doubt many people who play the LOTR mmorpg, have read the Silmarillion so they don't really know how powerful Gandalf actually is.

And in WoW I have less problem with the dragon role players, after all any dragon older than a whelp in that game can assume humanoid form in that universes law, my major problems comes from the people who play Paladins as some sort of Warhammer inquisitor/witch hunter, or people playing their noble characters as dark ages lords and ladies, despite the human religion being about forgiveness and respect for others...

    But I'm digressing.

While the setting of CoX, is pretty awesome it does leave a few things unsaid, are the only vampires in the world the Council/5th ones, same with werewolves.

If there were no super powers before Recluse and Statesman released them into the world, does that mean the maximum age we can set our characters to is within one lifetime previous to that event?

Did Pandora's box affect just the Earth or the rest of the universe?

Do Portal Corps only travel to alternative Earths, or have they encountered radically different universes with completely different rules of physics and differing landmasses?

    Gah, digressing again.

Why people want to play cosmic level toon's?

I'm guessing kinda the same reason they play games like God of War, some people like being the center of attention, an unstoppable force.

There is also the Superman effect, people want to play some of his level.

Personally I use game mechanics, if my character is capable of doing it in game, then I'll think of a reasonable explanation for it out of character, hence Twi and the Harkon cannon being an explenation for the Warburg nukes that was more in character than nipping over and stealing a few WMD's.

In cannon though Statesman and Foreshadow, have been best pals and worst enemies several times in the past. Plus who else could they do an attractive swishy haired close up of? All the heroes were wearing masks and helmets.

As for Spark Blade and Rose being in the game.

Rose as far as I know is just a super strength tanker type, Spark Blade however would require a new power set, which as long as the players got it too would suit me fine.
  3. True a lot of the time Superman is written as plot dumb, but more often as not he takes the smashy role because well, the rest of his team are much squishier than him. Likewise Batman takes the sneaky role in those encounters because well if he doesn't he'd die, plus well his costume is better for sneaking in than Superman's Red and Blue.

As for Cosmicman, surely that's a problem with the role player behind the character, rather than the character or concept itself?
  4. A figure stalked across a room, hidden by the shadows it climbed into a bath tub like dip in the floor, laying back and placing a cage of metal and blinking L.E.Ds over its head, fingers brushed a series of buttons, with a low whirr a lid slid forward, leaving the figure laying in its dark pod.

Liquid began to flood the pod, and the figure struggled briefly, unable to suppress its panic, as it had to take a lungful of liquid, luckily the fluid was oxygenated and designed to be breathed, the figure settled down suppressing instincts that were screaming how wrong this situation was.

The pod pulsed with lights, and there was a moment of separation, as the figures awareness leapt from the pod, travelling digitally across Paragon City, a moment of darkness, then light filtered in, cold mechanical sensors replacing flesh and blood senses.

The figure checked its new limbs, all twenty eight of them, mentally setting a switch that changed inbuilt weapons to none lethal settings. The figures awareness filled with a series of charts, listing the current status of its new bodies.

“All systems green. Giant Killer ready for deployment.” The figure said through six vocal units.
  5. Thing is Birdy it still works in comics.

Superman, an alien being capable of destroying the world in seconds, hangs out with a crazy man who dresses as a bat, same with Marvels Thor, he hangs with Captain America and Spiderman as often as he does with the other 'God' characters of the Marvel universe.

Heck in most encounters it's the street level heroes who solve the problem, the cosmic level heroes end up more or less being a tank, and just slugging it out with the current villain. Meanwhile Batman/Spiderman/Who ever, sneaks around and comes up with the last minute save, discovering the villains weakness or disabling their source of power.

However, bringing out a bunch of new characters, declaring them to be super-awesome and especially doing so by having them save the lead of a series is the classic way to introduce a Mary Sue. To me, they felt really tacked on and quite alien to the game, probably because of the over-the-top special powers. I mean, they gave Foreshadow pleeenty of screentime on the City of Villains trailer.
It's also the way they introduce pretty much every new hero ever in DC or Marvel comics. Heck in any super hero comics ever.

If I understand correctly, the four characters were brought out when they opened some servers in Korea, and were meant to appeal to a Korean audience who were less familiar with the superhero genre. In true self-centered Mary Sue fashion, they went completely overboard with adding "impossible" signature powers (like the sword+pistol+lightning or Mirror Spirit being able to melt into liquid metal) as opposed to the Freedom Phalanx who all have somewhat clear archetypes and power combinations that can be recreated in-game, so as to make our own heroes feel closer to them. I would have been disappointed if Statesman and friends were all clearly more "special" than any character that I can make, and I'm really not surprised that CoH flopped in Korea with WISDOM as their main anchormen for the game's commercials.

Still, I'm always for more content, even if I kind of wish the characters could be retconned into being less Mary Sue-like and closer in power to the rest of us. Make the sword and pistol guy lose the pistol and just go katana/elec armor and we're talking.

Edit: To add to that, according to the wiki Mirror Spirit is "destined to one day become the most powerful mystical force ever known" and just take a look at the ammount of detail on Foreshadow's and particularly Rose Star's costume. Tights with a bare shoulder and a special rose tattoo? I'll only want to see her in the game when Jay gives us the same options for our characters.

Ummm... all the signature heroes have their own super moves, Statesman has his massive thunder punch that strikes down with a rain of lightning bolts for example.

Likewise most of the signature characters have costume pieces that aren't available to us.

Mirror Spirit may one day be the most powerful mystic in the world, but up until Faultline got revamped, Sister Psyche was the most powerful psychic in the world.

Also how can they be Mary Sue's when they are created by the company that owns the property?

It'd be like calling Luke Skywalker a Mary Sue.

  9. Police file on the man found holding the crystal.

    Name : Chester Bonifer

    Age: 54

Place of residence: 17 Rodeo Drive, Steel Canyon suburbs.

    Previous convictions: None

    Summary of Interview and Investigation:

Suspect was at the centre of a riot located at The New Paragon Bank, 82 Witherstreet, Galaxy City. We have confirmed that Bonifer, is a regular at this branch despite living in Steel Canyon.

Security camera’s show Bonifer waiting in line to see a bank cashier, gradually becoming more and more agitated as time goes on, after a certain point those around him began to show signs of agitation too.

After ten minutes a fight broke out in the rear section of the line, quickly spreading into a mass brawl, at this point Bonifer began to show pyrokinetic abilities. There are no indications, that he has ever had such powers previously.

Once subdued by a team of meta-humans, a red crystal (Object A) fell from his pocket and began to hover. Bonifer said he had found it on his way to the bank, and was intending to hand it in to a police station on his way home. Given Bonifer’s history of returning lost items to the Police, we currently are taking his word at face value.

M.A.G.I reports indicate that Object A, is some form of emotional focus point, created by some unknown being or beings, to magnify and spread a particular emotions. M.A.G.I report that this crystal is attuned to Rage, heightening the holder’s feelings of wrath and then spreading it to others around him or her.

Since Bonifer was affected by an unknown magical artefact he will not be charged. Once psychological and M.A.G.I reports indicate there are no lasting effects to the incident, he will be released.

    They were both great!
  11. After the IC mission of 03/05/2010.

Current clue is being processed by M.A.G.I

    Red Crystal

It is a deep red in colour, like a drop of crystallized blood, and opaque enough to see through, however when looking through the crystal people around the observer would seem to be filled with rage, their expression twisted into grotesque masks of anger.

Physically the crystal is two inches long and a half inch thick, someone with knowledge of how to cut gem stones, would notice that it appears to have been cut, all the way down one side, as if the crystal had once been half of a bigger gem stone.

Just touching this oddly faceted gem, would cause those susceptible to magic to begin to fill with an intense rage and hatred of those around them, every negative thought would be magnified, every slight would demand blood as repayment. Eventually the magic would spill over, infecting others near the holder.Once the person lets go of the crystal the magic fades, and people quickly return to normal.

Carrying the crystal in a container, such as a bag or jar does not cause the magic to trigger, however touching it directly, even while wearing gloves does so.The crystal itself seems to be a focus point, as if some being had spent millennia focusing their hate and rage on one point in space and time, it is clearly some form of magical artefact when given even the weakest of "is it magic?™" tests.

    Advanced puppetry.

Control them through gravity manipulation, electrical control, dark magic, cybernetics etc, etc,

Said player is not being brought back from the dead, or from near death instead you are using them as a doll.

Hmmmm I would say an AI could make a logical leap to believing in a divine being, the AI after all knows it is created, if it found it's creator to be lacking in worth, it could come to a pseudo logical decision that it's creation is due to something greater than its human creators.

The personality conflict is a little annoying, how can you not care how you act or speak around others, and yet be a shy person?

    It doesn't make sense.

It may slightly annoy me because I know some one who claims to be like that.

    Really don't like that person.

Then there are basically no names at all we can use, as I can guarantee unless you're going to make up a nonsensical string of vowels and use that as a name, it's likely there has been some fictional creation with that name. Particularly hero names.
