Quote:I also think that they, the developers, wouldn't want to be seen as copying "that other game".
Anyway, I need more popcorn.
You mean the one made by people, who used to work at this company?
The one that actively sort to not have the issues with that game, that this one suffered?
Such as unique names and power customisation?
That other one?
Or the other one that uses unique names, and made every other MMO 101 mistake they could make and crashed into free to play, so fast the Flash stopped and said "Did anyone else see something blur past?" -
Quote:Doubt it given the term Iron Man existested before he used it, hell they even play the ironman song by black sabbath. One other amusing thought I had.
The current Marvel movie verse Tony Stark wouldn't hesitate a second to send a "Cease and Desist" order to anyone who tried to use the name "Iron Man" without his permission. I can see those Stark Corp lawyers in a tizzy now...
Ah.. moar popcorn.
Then you've got Iron Man competitions going back as far as people liked to show off by doing impressive feats of strength to tump other peoples feats of strength. -
It's not going to change for CoH, but no doubt CoH2 will use a global identifier instead of a character name as a unique ID.

That day...
Shed been shown how to trigger the surge, concentrate her attentions on the amulet, grasp it between her hands and concentrate. After two minutes the central stone began to glow, like the emeralds around it, and then brighter still.
The surge came seconds later, it was the worst experience of her life, it was the greatest experience of her life. A wave of overwhelming pleasure, body trembling and mind numbing, it seemed like she was unable to think, to act for an eternity, there seemed to be nothing but crushing rolling waves of pleasure, pleasure that filled her entire universe.
Then it grew bearable, she could think and act again, though lessened the pleasure remained in the back of her mind, her body revitalised in the afterglow of the mind shattering experience. As her mind returned, the central emerald ceased to glow, as did one of the outer gems of the amulet, leaving ten more charges in the device. -
That morning...
Princess of the Hades Empire, and dedicated heroine of Primal Earth, the young woman known as Tomb woke to a strange longing, a wistful feeling that filled her with melancholy as she washed and dressed, a longing that was cured as she put on the gift that her gracious host had given her.
Once more a vast web of golden lights filled her senses, greeting her, welcoming her, making her feel wanted, safe and treasured. She felt content, for the second time in her life, the physical presence of her gift faded from sight as she placed the second gift she had received around her neck. -
Quote:As i recall they're generally called something more than just Superman or Flash or Batman when there's more than one unless they're deliberately trying to obfuscate who is actually using the name at any given time. Also, in most cases they're actually from or on different Earths when using the same name. Almost like the names were being used on different... shards? servers? dimensions? On the same world at the same time they tend to have other adjectives/identifiers added or be called something else while on the world (server?): Red Superman, Blue Superman, Cyborg Superman, Green Lantern (Earth), Kilowog (Green Lantern Alien). Probably because it would otherwise become incredibly confusing in very short order. Something that is occasionally played with for the sake of drama or humor when more than one character uses the same name...
Actually no.
You've got the The Flash (Jay Garrick), The Flash (Wally West), The Flash (Barry Allen).
And The Green Lantern (Alan Scot), The Green Lantern (hal Jordan), The Green Lantern(Guy Gardener), The Green Lantern (john Stewart), The Green Lantern(Kyle Rainer).
Recently we had Batman (Bruce Wayne), Batman (Dick Greyson) and Batman (Jason Todd).
Recently we've also had Superman (Clark Kent) and Superman (Clark Kent from Kingdom Come) -
Quote:You don't get to be first by being fortunate, you get to be first by being creative.
No you don't.
For example, if you were an EU player and now wish to play on a US server. No amount of creativity on your part will ever prevent another player having an additional X amount of years to claim that name before hand. -
Quote:Not to nitpick but CoH is not a comic book. Yes it is based on super heroes; who are mainly in comic books...but it is not a comic book mmo.. it is a super hero mmo...hence the title of the game: City of Heroes - not City of Comic Books.
I'm sorry you can't get THE name you want, but what right do you have to take away my individuality that I have had on a character for 5-6-7-8 years? CoH is a SOCIAL game...and truth be told I do not want Joe Schmoe out there in Broadcast with a duplicate of my name saying things that I would never say. Sure my friends may know it's not me because they know my global... but Player A who sees I BURNT THE TOAST screaming profanity or racial slanders in broadcast.... will probably react negatively to me if they saw me 15 minutes later. I'm sorry but I have little faith that scenarios like this would not be a daily occurrence as there can be quite an immature player base spouting off in various channels. I can see duplicate names being used to harass more well known players in this game...sadly. There is nothing to stop me from creating a new Forbin Project, Arcanaville, etc... and doing my best to ruin their reputation in game.
So no I am not for duplicate names unless their is a clear indicator that the duplicate is just that...with some type of preface such as @OtherGlobal: Duplicate Name .... otherwise... thanks but no thanks.
Yeah, given that, that doesn't happen on the other superhero mmo with a none unique character name system?
I think you're scaremongering for no reason. -
Quote:Personally, I'm against the idea of allowing multiple uses of the same name on a server because doing so would break the genre this game is supposed to be emulating. In comic books, a character's name is their identity. With a few very specific exceptions, there is only one person per comic universe using any given name. When someone says, "I saw Superman today!", everyone knows exactly who they mean. Nobody has to ask, "Which one?"
In that world there have been two Supermen at the same time, three Flashes at the same time, umpteen hundred Green Lanterns, four of which are on Earth and recently three Batmen. -
Quote:That is actually based on one of the ebtter marvel comic events.
Though in that one, the son of Reed Richards creates an entire new world, because he's bored and so OP. -
Quote:Two of those are mutants whose very existence is meant to be scary and hateful to Marvelverse inhabitants and totally not an out of date reference to apartheidnow matter how retarded it is for Marvel to keep milking it.Wolverine? Nightcrawler? Batman? All of those sound more "scary/villain" than "heroic".
And Batman killed people when he was first written. -
Quote:*Points out that only sounds bad with a literal translationtion since.*... I wouldn't use a manga or anime for this argument. >.> Everything from "Science Ninja Team" (which sounds like someone sneaks up undetected and explain's Kepler's laws to you) to the utter word salad of some series/titles/names/powers.
*note, yes, I'm purely poking fun at it.
Gatchaman is another name for it.

Quote:And that means none of them are in comics? All of those names are "genre" appropriate as far as I can tell.
As far as I know, other than Nick Fury, none of those characters had a comic by those names.
Luke cage had the comics Power Man and Heroes for Hire.
Jean Grey? X-men
Black Tom? Never had his own comic.
Or to put it another way, if you can't see the name being on the front of a comic book, as the title of the series? Probably not a 'good' name by some peoples standards for the genre. -
Quote:Black Tom Cassidy is a supernatural/mutant villain and Black Tom, is his costumed name, Thomas Samuel Eamon Cassidy is his 'real' name.Break genre, eh? Like Black Tom Cassidy? Like Jean Grey? Like Luke Cage? Like Nick Fury? Like... you get the idea.
Jean Grey had I belive the super heroine name Marvel Girl, as well as Phionix.
Luke Cage, has the name Power Man.
Nick Fury isn't a super hero he's a spy. -
The kick one works as a sudden burst of speed and violence.
The fire one works as well as a molotov cocktail/pipebomb thing. -
Quote:If you have to change your origin story to match a name, that isn't being creative that compromising to a sucky name system.Feuern Sie Werfer isn't word salad, it's German.
Vider Le Lanceur isn't word salad, it's French.
Licenziare Il Lanciatore isn't word salad, it's Italian.
Surely you don't consider those obscure languages that no one knows.
Very few people born in America have a family tree that didn't originate from somewhere else in the world.
Why wouldn't someone want to honor a revered ancestor by naming them self in the language that ancestor spoke? Perhaps that ancestor was a hero as well and the brute is carrying on the family hero tradition and honoring that name. Perhaps it's for some other reason.
That's not a kludge. It's called a back story. Or part of an Origin story. -

Sunday Night, A mansion somewhere....
The woman screamed, almost silently, she had torn off the sleeve of her shirt, desperately balling it up and shoving it into her own mouth to silence the pain born sobs that leaked from her pretty pink lips, the reason for her pain, the cruel rusted teeth of a bear trap, that had savagely closed around her ankle, biting bone deep and resisting stubbornly each of her desperate attempts to pry it open.
Nearby on a thick brown leather chair sits a man, his fashion sense could be described as new romantic meets post nineties goth, or in a more timely manner, Johnny Depp in any Tim Burton film ever. Despite the young woman’s obvious suffering he was simply reading the paper, an article about the heroine Tiger White and her seemingly manic slip into to chaos.
A smile curled his lips as a wicked plot snuck into his brain, a way to hit two birds with one stone, no, he corrected himself, three birds with one stone. He peered over his paper at the terrorized young woman.
“One can survive almost anything in a dream...” he paused in brief thought “Well except death of course Katarina.”
The young woman’s fingers were white with strain as she desperately tried to open the trap, from outside the door came heavy footsteps, prompting her to squeal with terror, as a deep sound like Rumdiggerdiggerdigger started up, the library door lurched as the blade of a madly spinning chainsaw burst through it, a crazy looking, bug eyed bald and probably inbred redneck peering through the gash in the door and loudly hollering.
“Wooooheeeee lookie boss I done caught a sweeeeeeeet piggy!” he capered around before attacking the door again.
The dandy dressed man slid from his seat to give the woman, who now tried futilely to drag herself and the bear trap across the floor, a florid bow.
“Do try not to die Katarina...” he shook his head ruefully “Really now Mansion Maniacs Five, just before bed? You’re disappointing me young lady.”
With that said the man faded, forming into black smoke and disappearing like a dream in the morning light. With a lurch, the door broke open.... -
The little image thing, isn't very good.
Instead of the heroic dashing towards each other for a fight, they are both fleeing from each other.
Unfortunatly that means they are both fleeing the City of Heroes sign.
I'm suprised marketing didn't pick up on that little PR flaw. -
*Covered more tastefully in some papers than this one.*
Interdimensional Lesbian Love Tiff!
World renowned skirt chaser and fashion designer, Stoneberg, also known as the heroine Tiger White, went on a drunken rampage last night, after allegedly failing to seduce the Russian ambassador from a parallel world.
After insulting the patrons of Pocket D, the heroine challenged the ambassador and her aide to a fight in the popular arena system, unfortunately we could not cover the actual fight itself, but Tiger White appears to have lost badly, as she later wept about it being unfair, while being the worse for wear.
*Pictures are included showing a rather drunken Ellie glaring and shouting at the crowd and ambassador Vyera, in this article and some other sensationalist rags they included the photos of the vomit covered, sulking and weeping Tiger White too.* -
Quote:There is nothing to say that DirectX *cannot* use OpenGL for 3d outputting... infact, that is an advantage. Direct3D though does not render OpenGL stuff.
DirectX though *does* open up other areas to ease things through (controller/sound support etc etc).
Brink was one of the 1st OpenGL 3.1 titles though... so it isn't all that surprising that there were problems with it (not to mention as well that you needed a driver update for the 8xxx range of Nvidia cards and up to get proper OpenGL 3.1 support).
*Note* I would like to point out that DirectX is actually the *complete* suite of API's from Microsoft. Some parts of which are "Direct3D", "DirectPLay" and so on. It is actually up to you which parts you which to use (if any).
The advantage of DirectX *suite* is that you can add nice controllers/keyboards etc and at least have the *basic* functionality of them working (remapping of keys/macro recording/stupidly high number of mouse buttons requires more driver support as well) without having to reinvent the whell each time you which to do something.
If an openGL game *didnt* use this advantage then it is making it harder for them to do it.
You *CAN* use OpenGL for rendering, and have DirectSound and DirectInput (and others) running the rest of the stuff necessary to make the game worthwhile (or you can use OpenAL or something else for Sound rendering... etc etc)
((Remember, CoX is OpenGL, so why did i get the same, if not better performance swapping from XP to Vista with the same hardware and driver setup?)).
To add even more confusion to it, a game engine suite can support both openGL and Direct3D rendering (the Unreal Engine is an example of this)

Personal fave engine for MMO's? Unreal engine (3) even if it does suffer from its own little hiccup of texture pops, it tends to run fairly well and look good on low end systems, while still looking eye poppingly nice on the higher spec systems. -
Since Vista OpenGL is now done through Direct X, massivly impacting on the performance. A pretty sneaky way for Microsoft to scupper people who won't use Direct X.
You just have to look at all the QQing done when games like Brink come out to see its effects. -

Quote:My question is why would you want to keep a copywritten name? The EULA isn't there just to screw you over, it's there to protect the company from the crap that Marvel tried to pull.
Because there are so many superhero names it will remove, due to god knows how many years of comics, I mean your forum name, could easily be the name of some DC or Marvel comic character from say the sixties. -
Quote:Except well...True, but sometimes the first name and the look is all that are needed.
Or the name and background.
Sakura is a real name.
Sakura is a real name, and at least one of those Sakura's you mentioned wears a sailor uniform, aka a school uniform.
That would be like trying to copyright a character called Jim, who wears slacks and a t-shirt or any other combo of clothes that real people wear.
For you to copy wright something like a character, it has to be the combination of look, name and backstory.
I mean there was a short, hairy canadian wrestler who for some time was labeld the Wolverine in his career. But since he didn't have the name James Howlett and didn't wear yellow, black and blue spandex....
