I haven't played regularly in a long time, but was there for a good 6 years from beta. Feels like the end of an era and hard not to feel a little saddened.
That's an interesting angle. The initial announcement was November 7, 2007, so it'll be pretty much 5 years when it closes.

I would have thought that NCSoft would have made that part of the announcement though, it would blunt the bad press they are getting.
  2. I'll be playing more LOTRO.

I'll probably pick up SWTOR again once they fix some issues.

    I've been dabbling with TSW.

I may get back into CO and STO.

Borderlands 2 and Torchlight 2 are coming.

I've no lack of entertainment options.

But I'm still going to miss CoH.

They can likely do it for a fairly cheap bargain of 10 - 25 million and it is likely that NCSoft would take that.

It can happen but again I wouldn't count on it. Though Perfect World did sweep in and grab Cryptic, STO & Champions from Atari when they decided to close things.
Unfortunately, this normally would have to happen *before* today's announcement. After today, the team will be dispersed, looking for (and hopefully getting) new jobs.

Without a team in place, the value of the franchise goes down dramatically. So much so that you have to think that NCSoft looked around for a buyer before making this decision, and didn't find one.

I think it's better to say "I did something." Rather than "I sat back and watched it burn."
Well. I don't think it's appropriate to fight at a funeral, so I'll just say that there are more than the two alternatives you state, and your premise is flawed.

    Carry on.
  5. Unless someone like Zuckerberg is a closet CoH fan, I'm afraid all the talk of Kickstarters and petitions is moot. This is something it would take millions to do. (I'm aware that some Kickstarters have raised millions. This would not be one of them.)
  6. Tutelary - you're being way out of line. Basically, you're saying that since the game is closing, you've decided to come settle some old scores. Try just letting it go - you'll live longer.

Forbin - seriously, what does it matter whether Tutelary is getting it right or not? Let him have the last word, in a week no one is going to remember anyway.

Let's have some respect for the people who just got unemployed in a miserable market.
  7. This is a bit of a surprise. I knew that the franchise wasn't making big money for NCSoft, but I figured, at gross revenues of ~$10M/year, it was around break-even.

    But enough about business.

I want to take a moment to thank the members of Paragon who developed a great game and provided me with a truly frightening number of hours of entertainment. My best wishes to all of you and I hope you find good landing spots in the near future.

  8. Well, hello again, Noble Savage!

Big news - our very own David Nakayama has signed up to be one of the artists for the game!

    Umm. <shifty eyes> He wasn't exclusive, right?

Also some additional artists have been signed up, and there's now a way that your own art could be featured in the game. (Hit the link http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...building/posts and scroll down to Update #18). Now you can all throw down (artistically speaking) with one of Paragon's finest! (Not me, my talent tops out at "recognizable stick figure.")
  9. Another art update - the team has added two more artists, Tyler Walpole and Sam Flegal. I think many of you will recognize their work, particularly Tyler's...

  10. Just an update - the Metro City team has signed up their sixth artist, Alayna Lemmer. For anyone keeping track, that's six so far - here's who they are and links to some of their work. As always, you can go to the Kickstarter page (http://kck.st/Q4RcXy) for more details.

Yes, at a high level, the game play is quite similar. There are some significant differences in the details, for example, Heroes has you managing three resources (plot, energy, damage) vs Ascension's two (power, runes), and Heroes has a timing system built in (cards are removed by enemies) which makes it possible for everyone to lose.

In the case of this game, additions to your deck are permanent (until the next game).

The general flow of gameplay is:

    1) You deal yourself a hand of five cards from your personal deck
    2) You play cards from your hand - this may allow you to draw additional cards from the deck
    3) Based on the results of step 2, you add cards from the central stockpile to your discard pile (improving your deck)
    4) All the cards from your hand, played and unplayed, are put in your discard pile (there's an exception for energy sources, which stay played.)
    5) Go to step 1 (when your personal deck runs out, you shuffle your discard pile and keep drawing from it)

Yep - that's how this one works as well. You start with a deck that is pretty much the same as everyone else's, then as you play the game, your deck becomes more personalized by selecting stuff from the piles in the middle.
  14. What is Heroes of Metro City? It's an upcoming superhero-based card game that I figured would appeal to some folks here... You start with a basic deck of cards, which represents your hero, and as you play the game you increase your deck (increasing the power of your hero) in order to defeat enemies, which builds up your hero, etc... However, as you're defeating enemies, they're destroying Metro City (the card 'stock'), so it's a race.

There's a really sparse 1-page website at http://www.heroesofmetrocity.com/ but for a better look at the game, you can check out the short video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHt1ymjbkSI

There's also a much longer (12-minute) gameplay example video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6N6OUbCWPr0

The creators of the game are demoing in GenCon this weekend, so if you want to check it out in person and you happen to be there, they'll be in Sagamore 6/7.

You can also find more information on their Kickstarter page: http://kck.st/Q4RcXy

If you have questions about the game, you can ask them via a link at the bottom of the Kickstarter page (this will require that you set up a Kickstarter account), or you can ask them via the email posted on their homepage. Or you can ask in this thread, and I'll do my best to answer (or get an answer).

By the by, since I've pointed you at a Kickstarter page, I need to say something - Kickstarter is not a pre-order system. Kickstarter is NOT a pre-order system. It may look like a pre-order system. It may often behave like a pre-order system. But Kickstarter is not a pre-order system. If you want to know more about Kickstarter, I refer you to their FAQs

This is absolutely true that at the current time, Pando doesn't do anything bad.

  17. I sent the file to Kaspersky and they confirmed it was a false positive, they say they'll fix it in the next DB update.

Careful with that one. SLC (single level cell, or 1 bit per cell) SSD's have endurances in the hundreds of thousands to a million write cycles.

Pretty much all consumer-grade SSD's these days are using MLC (multi level cell, 2 bits per cell) technology. MLC has a much shorter lifetime, in some cases as low as a thousand write cycles (but usually estimated at up to ten thousand cycles). This is still better than a hard drive, unless you're running an enterprise database or streaming storage.

Manufacturers have started playing with 3 bits per cell (TLC). The best estimates I've seen for TLC is a thousand write cycles and it could well be lower than that. TLC scares me at the moment, I personally wouldn't use a TLC drive.

(The reason why the drive companies are stufffing more bits per cell is because it allows them to offer larger drives for lowed prices.)
  19. This is an absurd bug to make it to live. It's even more ridiculous that this wasn't hotfixed the same day.

Every Paragon Studios employee should be ashamed they're drawing a paycheck for this kind of garbage.
  20. Since we've wandered a bit off the track, I thought I'd throw this out there.

If you're in the biz, you've probably read it already, but if not, it's an interesting read on the importance of Platform by a former Amazon, current Googler

By pasta, I hate the "oh, my job gives me special insight" line. Here's a counter for you. I know from being alive that if you want to encourage a behavior, you give positive reinforcements (i.e., fixing bugs and responding to bug reports.) If you want to discourage behavior, you give negative reinforcement. The PS team have been doing far more of the latter.

Do you know what a false dichotomy is? Because you've got one right there.

If, by some miracle, all the feedback isn't being ignored, some QA person (not a developer) should be checking the feedback and logging issues into PS' tracking system.

If you're going to say it's unreasonably onerous for that person to post a boilerplate "Logged as bug #736222," or "Duplicate of bug #288237," or "Unable to duplicate, please provide more details," then you've got awfully low expectations.

Me, I play a bunch of other MMOs. Pretty much no dev team excels at communication, but there are some that are way better than this.

Getting outward facing communications is difficult, but it's essential if you want to foster a constructive relationship with the community. I congratulate you on illustrating my point with your snide remark.

No one is talking about paid beta testers. However, the point is that only a fraction of the population of any beta server for a game is going to be interested in filing bugs. If Paragon wanted higher density feedback, they could simply run closed betas with people who file lots of bugs.

Sadly, a 30-50 person beta isn't likely to do much good, so they fling open the doors to occasional filers and even people who just want to see the new shinies. Because even those people can unearth bugs.

But you can never lose sight of the fact that none of those people have any obligation to be testing and filing bugs.

And when Paragon consistently falls down at communicating and fixing bugs, it's even more ludicrous to be taking the stance that the problem is due to bad beta testers.
  22. Considering that 'back in the day', unsubscribed accounts got freespecs, I see no reason why Premiums wouldn't get them now.

    Just a thought, y'know.
Oh please. There are numerous instances of bugs that have been reported in Beta and still made it live. And honestly, I don't think the total silence from Paragon on most bug threads is at all helpful. If people feel their feedback is falling on deaf ears, they're going to be less inclined to give feedback in the future.

Finally, players are not QA. Beta tests exist in order to get feedback and bug reports, true, but depending on a beta to do your testing for you is the acme of arrogance and futility.

On your first go, your chances are 6/205 for each card. Now lets say that first pack is all costume pieces. Unfortunate, as you don't want those, you only want those 6 enhancements but, as you cannot repeat costume pieces, the chance per card are now 6/200, not 6/205.

    <snip>
I'd just like to point out that you're making a fairly big assumption here. All we know is that you are guaranteed not to get repeat costume pieces, the mechanism by which that happens it unknown. You are assuming that costume pieces you already own are removed from the 'pool' before randomization takes place, where it's just as possible that instead, substitution takes places after the fact, and there is no guarantee that said substitution is random.

In plain language, it's perfectly possible that if you get a rare costume item in a pack, on further packs, that item isn't removed from the 'rolling table', but is instead replaced with Windfall.

This is why I've repeatedly insisted that transparency in the numbers is essential. Paragon seems inclined to disagree.
  25. Will the odds of getting specific items (such as ATIOs) out of the Super Pack be revealed?
