Quote:I do agree that the hip sway is a little bit too exaggerated.I definitely agree with this. It's such an exaggerated catwalk/music video/ladies of the night sway. On female characters wearing stilettos, I still find it a bit silly. On my punk cyborg in flat boots, or my barefooted insectoid character it just looks ludicrous.
I have a slightly similar issue with the huge walk -- it has a lot of attitude baked into the animation, so it's only applicable to a subsection of characters' personalities.
The male walk is pretty darn nifty, though. It's nice and neutral, just walking.
However, I do not see a need to change it. I think it capture the "comic theme" nicely. In general (and that's a very vague generalization, I know), comics portray super heroes and super villains with a certain flare as far as appearance goes. Walking style is part of that appearance. The females all have extremely lady-like qualities and physical attributes, the males have usually have gentle-man-like styles, and the 'brutes' have a very "Imma gonna kill you!" attitude.
Personally, I think as far as this comic theme goes, the animations do fit, and they are as generic as they can be.
The moment you make the female walking any less 'shaky', you'll get complaints from people whose characters are all pretty ladies who could be models as their day jobs. And trust me, the population of those characters vastly outweighs other female types. Same with most other 'builds'. -

Can anyone post a video of male/huge walk cycles?
And maybe a video of the idle post when you stop walking but the power is still toggled on?
My test server thingy isn't working for some reason. -
Quote:You're right. I should have elaborated on that point.I apologise for quote-snipping, but I'd like to interject here. If you don't involve opinions, it's not a debate. It's proof of thesis. A debate is inherently based not on facts, but on the interpretation of such facts. To expect that a debate has a single, universal solution that it must invariably reach if all parties act properly is unrealistic. Reaching a deadlock where all parties disagree and no party will concede and budge from its opinion is also a perfectly valid conclusion to a debate. As long as it's handled fairly and without malice, I don't see why a debate cannot simply be a statement of opinion and a defence thereof. You don't have to be right as long as you have a point.
Yes, debates ARE about opinions. But you can't justify/prove opinions with more opinions. That's what I was trying to get at. You cannot say "God exists because I think he does exist! And that's my opinion! End of discussion." Edit: Well, you can. It just won't be a debate with a non-trivial conclusion. -
Quote:First of all, quote snipping is not a good idea in a debate, Mr. McDebate. If this isn't the pot calling the kettle black, I don't know what is.
You've never actually debated, have you? If all we had were facts, there would be no debates. And, might I remind you, art is a subjective thing. There are no 'facts' in the sense that you're trying to push forward. You've just been basically screaming real loud because I'm saying something you don't like to hear. Well, kid, if you don't like it, why don't you do yourself a favor and put me on ignore? I know it probably tears you apart to know that there's someone out there who disagrees with you, but trying to resort to such 'fundamentalist artist' tactics (to coin a phrase, har har!) just makes you appear foolish.
Wrong. He disagreed with me. Go back and read what he wrote. A developer's opinion is not the word of God, no matter how much you might want it to be.
I mean I know this is probably why you feel like you've been some devs' champion and that's kept you fighting your valiant fight against... well, yeah I don't know what you think you've been trying to accomplish here. Certainly it's not any kind of rational discourse. It's not even "I'm right and you're wrong!", more like "I'm right and SHUT UP!! (because God is behind me)". You can maybe see why I've been rolling my eyes at this and pretty much gave up trying to actually argue with you. Well no, you probably don't. I'm rather certain that ready to come up with yet another dogmatic response. It must make you feel better to make pariahs out of heathens, or whatever.
So, yeah, agree to disagree? How about you try and keep your little holy wars to yourself for a change? You don't like it, you don't have to listen. But don't try and come off as being some knight in shining armor... armed with a paintbrush and a paintboard, no less.
Second of all, as I stated previously, I really do not care at all whether or not you think video games are art or not. I just get bored enough to try and counter your "arguments". Sorry. My mistake.
Third of all, I never stated that the developers are gods. However, I think it is safe to assume that they have spent much more time thinking about video games are forms of art or not than me, and definitely you; so they probably are basing their so-called "opinion" on something more than just the "voice in their head".
I'm done with this. Have a good day! -
Quote:Debat?! Since when did this become a debate?!My bad for actually thinking you were interested in a debate. I should have realized you were more interested in strutting 'round and showing off!
From what I see, this is just you claiming your opinions to be facts. A debate is a setting in which people argue maturely over a certain topic using logic, reasoning, and facts.
Opinions have no room in debates.
From what I see, we gave you facts. A developer of the game stated that your argument is wrong. I, a game design student, gave you non-Wikipedia sources for my counter-arguments (which is really rare on the forums!), which was a University-level text book written by professional game developers and software engineers, along with a whole bunch of people explaining to you in ridiculous detail and very sound logic why your opinion of whether or not an art is good doesn't have anything to do with that thing being an art.
And even though all your arguments have been countered very formally, much more formally than needed for a stupid forum, and you have had no sources, no references, and no logical basis for your "facts", you claim that you will not fall to our "group thinking" and refuse to jump a bandwagon?
No, that's not a debate. That's just you expressing your opinion, which happens to disagree with that of a whole group of people who have spent more time researching and studying such things. Which is fine. That's your opinion. But don't pretend it's a fact.
And as long as there are opinions involved in a debate, I don't think there is much point to the debate as there are no conclusions. The only viable, trivial conclusion is that we agree to disagree. And that's where I am. -

Also, just FYI, Crayon Physics is a game that looks like drawings of a 6 year old, and it's still so incredibly fun, at least for me. But it's still a video game. And it's still art.

Quote:Why is it that all your posts start all nicely with proper grammar and spelling, and just gradually, in a very steady pace, they turn into troll-speak?!If you really read what Frecks worked his butt off repairing u would see i said i MISUNDERSTOOD get off the bandwagon
This really puzzles me... -
Quote:*patpat* We've been trying to make him understand this for a long time now. He thinks it's cool to be defiant cause apparently we're ganging up on him. Just let it go.For cryin' out loud, we're still arguing about this?!
Art is everywhere. Whatever someone wants to call art can justifiably be called art. There is an entire category called found art which requires practically no design intent by the artist and relies almost exclusively upon context set up by said artist. Regardless of one's opinions of whether that piece is worthy of display in a gallery, it is a category still widely accepted as art.
Whether it's any good is another matter completely. This is arguable, as the formation of opinions can either rely solely on the individual or solely on the collective criticism of those most educated on the subject. More often than not, it is some nebulous combination of the two.
Video games are, and always have been, art. Art is not always good art. The stuff a 6 year old does with crayons and cardboard is, technically, art. It's just not likely to sell for $1,000,000 in an art gallery. Then again, some of that stuff looks like the scribbles of a six year-old. -
Quote:...wut?!HA lets see and keep in mind these are my opinions n some from sg/vg

Seriously, what are you smoking?!
I don't think it's these points that are ruining CoH for you. I believe you want to be playing some other game...like, WoW or something. You just seem to think every aspect of CoH is silly.
Of course, I could've misunderstood your points entirely. But in my defense...you really need to either stay off the keyboard or the booze...or whatever it is you're smoking. -
Quote:Honestly, I stick with Windows' default drivers for mostly every device other than my graphics card. It keeps my PC from being bloated by unneeded driver softwares.Win 7 comes with default drivers for a lot of cards, but those defaults are usually missing things that CoH needs to run. For example, it'll automatically install the core drivers for my nVidia 9800 GTX+, but those drivers are an absolute minimum and don't include things like the nVidia control panel. The drivers that Win 7 installs are, by default, the most current that nVidia has submitted to MS (at the moment they would be the 191.07 drivers), but it's missing just enough from the nVidia downloaded drivers that it won't run City.
A software such as nVidia Control Panel is rather essential, though. -

Quote:I already cut down on my food budget for CoH. How sad is THAT?The only thing I take issue with is the whole $15 a month thing as a crutch. It's a pittance in today's economy really. Buy two less packs of smokes. Don't go out to eat once less a month. Commute to work. Watch the game on TV once a month...etc. The way I see it, we're paying for nearly 24 hour a day entertainment for cents on the dollar. It's a bargain really.
Now...don't get me wrong...I came from poor white trash. There were times when we could barely afford basic things like FOOD when I was growing up. If you can't afford to play the game, then don't friggin' play it. If you can, look at what you get before using that $15 month as a negative. -
CoH has nothing to do with DirectX. CoH is an OpenGL game.
-
Quote:That's perfectly valid and reasonable. Some users on this forums need to know and probably understand that every user of this forum and every player of the game is different from eachother and likes the game in a diffferent way. Some are very fond of this mmo some play it casual and some stopped playing at all. Its one of the many that we bought to play for particular and individual reasons. Further more regarding upcoming products of any sort , expectations are built withing the consumer based n the products marketing. SOme will be dissapointed and some wont.
The only thing i like and enjoy about CoH is the character customization. I like playing it with my friends still. But also keep in mind this game is based on a monthly subscription that adds up every few months to the full price of a stand alone game or another mmo. I dont want to seem cheap about it but its true. I'm not expecting massive content aditions every few months to equivalate (not spelled right i think) another game but i do have my own expectations upon what i want to spend my money on. I do understand the massive workforce and focus behind going rogue and that it probably be a big hit but lets face it, there are so many topics about the same old boring mission maps, and other things that were requested over and over. I dont find it fair to have an issue lie i15 being released with that costume and pattern and have to pay for a booster pack for some better looking pieces. I find it fair to constantly update your game's heart and core considering you have anime fans, fantasy fans etc. I would take an issue with costumes varying multiple themes any time over the 15th issue. Same thing with weapons. Or mission maps. Anyway, tons of thing i expected and still expect. But thats just me and what i like. I also like blasters but they feel more like a hero wannabe faceplanting so often. I still hope to ge able to get some defense without trading offense and somewhat in the early levels.
I don't know about others, but I have nothing against -you-. I do disagree with you, but that's just a difference in opinion.
What I -am- complaining about are people who take their opinions to the next level, and pretend like simply because THEY don't enjoy GR as of now, GR will be the final nail in CoH's coffin for ALL of us. And when people oppose them, they hold their heads up and go on and on and on and on about their "evidences" and "data" to try and justify why CoH is dying to them.
I.e. They want to blame the developers for not personally liking CoH, not themselves. Why? Because, god forbid, they are NEVER wrong! -
-
Quote:Well of course that's the case. People who are on the forums with high post counts are people are genuinely love this game, me included. Why would someone who DOESN'T like this game be on the forums to begin with to agree with your negative opinions?I see a lot of those posts as well, but the typical poster of such things has very few forum posts and doesn't read the forums much. Many of the, uh, "high post count" folks tend to have a ridiculously positive, almost blind view of the game. I've been in lots of heated discussions on the forums before, usually with people ganging up on me when I disagree with something the devs do or express dissatisfaction over something in the game. Such behavior is neither mature nor constructive, but it happens. Look at the guy who made this thread, and how much negative rep he got as a result. And it's not like he was trolling, or being inappropriate or rude. He just expressed his disappointment, and he was bombarded with negativity, name-calling and just immature, destructive responses in general.
Personally, I try not to bash on people who disagree with me on something. But a lot of people do; it's a natural theme on internet forums. So...you go into a forum full of people who love this game, post a negative opinion regarding a change a ridiculous portion of the community is super-excited about, and you expect to be handled maturely? It's called "party pooping". Of course you'd get a negative reaction, mature or otherwise.
Sadly, people who want to express their negative opinions in the middle of a group of people who are partying happily over the said opinions don't even try to make it subtle. If the original poster of this thread didn't attack Going Rogue so bluntly, maybe he would've gotten more mature, serious responses.
Regardless, that still don't provide justification for your example. This very same crowd who are partying over GR aren't as blind/stupid as you put it. At least not most of them.
Speaking for myself, I'd have paid $20 for CoH: GR even if the only feature they included was a graphics upgrade. As of now, I'm more than satisfied with GR, and logic tells me that I can only be more and more satisfied about GR as months go by. But I'm not someone who'd pay money for a genuine piece of crap (i.e. City of Heroes: Bag of Poo). I actually told a lot of my friends that if GR doesn't come with a graphics upgrade, I'm leaving the game.
I just think you're generalizing and exaggerating too much. -
Quote:Alright. Seems like I misunderstood your post. It sounded like you were accusing me of something. I'm sorry for that.I did not say Going Rogue was a bag of crap, nor did I suggest anyone else thought so. I was merely expressing how I view many of the elitist members of this forum, who have a tendency to defend the game and the developers even to the point of pretense, and give a ridiculous example in which that kind of attitude would be extremely unhelpful. I did not make any accusations, nor did I ever say I was disappointed personally with this game. You crack a joke about my supposed inability to comprehend classical debate techniques (something I admittedly have no interest in), but your inability to even read my previous posts in full before commenting on them is obvious. I did not come here to debate. I did not come here to make accusations. I have not done either, at least not intentionally. I was merely trying to offer another perspective to those who are unable to comprehend the idea of disappointment with the new expansion and its announced features. And someone DID say that the opinions of anyone who is disappointed with GR's announced features should be "disregarded", in fact it was on the very last page. What was also on the very last page was a post by me, in which I expressed my own personal excitement over some of Going Rogue's features.
Back to the point at hand, however, it's just a matter of exprience. I'm honestly shocked that you think the elitist members are defending the game. I've seen countless people with the "I'm a veteran in CoH. I don't like how CoH is doing. My opinion is better than your opinion! And if you don't listen to me, I'm unsubscribing."
I just think your examples back there was extremely over-the-top, and that you're having a biased view on things. And as I said, anyone who believe the opinion of their opposition should be disregarded is really just plugging their ears and screaming "LALALALALA!"...which is not really something mature human beings generally do.
Edit: Fixed a typo. -
It's not Windows 7 that's causing issues.
Me and a vast group of people have had Windows 7 since Beta and we've never had any issues with CoH.
I suggest you start by checking your drivers and windows settings. -
Quote:I don't remember ever doing that. But I do believe that opinions don't matter in a debate over something, such as the earlier debate over whether or not games are artforms. I think you should go research some before accusing people.Staying positive is one thing. Telling people who disagree with you or who are disappointed by some things that are announced that their opinions "don't matter" is not staying positive, it's being totalitarian.
No one here stated that those who thing GR will be a "Bag of Crap" are stupid or their opinions are worthless. If they did, then they have invalidated each and every single opinion/argument they've brought to the table by refusing to listen to the opposing side.
I really don't give a crap about whether or not you like GR or not. But if you come to the forums to discuss whether or not you like GR and try to announce your opinion, expect others to announce their opinions as well and question yours. That is true for both sides of this "argument". If everyone always agreed on all things, the term "debate" would be meaningless. -
Quote:I neg-repped you? xDYes, let's all talk about classical debate techniques instead of the topic at hand. A classic maneuver on these forums that I've seen used countless times in some bizarre effort to try and show everyone what an intellectual you are. And then, neg rep me and tell me to get out and call me stupid. That will teach me to express a differing opinion, or rather, simply to express how I can see things from a differing opinion, won't it?
See you in game.
I should go change my account password... -
Quote:From the looks of it if anyone expresses any agreement about anything and tries to stay positive is immediately shot down by doomsayers. Biased much?I'm not arguing, just stating my opinion. Maybe you don't notice it, but I do. Anyone who expresses any disappointment about anything; new issues, new expansions, whatever, is immediately shot down on these forums. That's not helpful to the game in the long run.

See I wanted to give him a link to an article that describes that fallacy, but I thought it'd be too much for the poor guy to handle.
