Quote:When I heard Disney bought Star Wars my hope was for a new, better, SW MMOWait a few more years (if it takes that long) and just have Disney make a single MMO that has every single thing they own in it.
I want to make a Force Sensitive Poke'Master from Toonville that travels with Dr Who to help Asterix The Gaul beat Ceasar's top guards from obtaining a Borg ship that crashed in the ancient Mediterranean... -
Quote:But wands would be gear, so everyone can make the wand as they wantThat garbage will happen in any game that has stats. If it wasn't bickering about houses, they'd be bickering about wands, which CANONically have affinities for different kinds of spells. And any other rare item in the game that you can get.
Just imagine the real story as an MMO for a moment and imagine a player argument about Time Turners, Liquid Luck, Invisibility Cloaks, the Marauder's Map, etc.
Keeping the Houses (fractions) equal and letting gear be the factor isn't a bad thing. Spell selection and gear can be what makes one different. -
Quote:Now that could work.If Voldemort comes back, that can be one of the epic pieces of content that calls for co-op zones where the factions can work together.
Keep the faction-unique powers out of it as well. Though affinities for certain things should perhaps be kept in. If they go with a Hogwarts-based game, the personality traits the sorting hat uses for assigning students to houses would provide some nice modifiers for base stats.
A small, but not really game changing, bonus to certain spells.
More for flavor than "OMG! You're main offensive spell is that?! You have to be Ravnclaw!"
Though, I'm sure there'd be players going "But you you're .02% better and that means gimped if you don't" -
Quote:I was thinking a bit further than Harry's kids, but still in time to see Harry Potter and the signature characters.Yeah... probably best to get as far from the Harry era as possible.
And if they want multiple factions, the "bad guy" can just someone with a different viewpoint instead of a devil character. Might have a better chance at not having horrid faction imbalances that way, and nobody going around acting like they already know the end because "The horde is supposed to lose!"
You have to have the fractions, but really, they could have all the skills be the same for every fraction. No need for special skills if you're this group or that group.
All work together while working against each other
Possibly have some big bad who can bring Voldermort back! -
Quote:I LOVED CoX's art style. Was it the highest quality of MMOs now? Nope. Would i consider it the best? Probably not. But did I love it? SURE DID!I wouldnt mind seeing this style in a superhero game myself. We have a american comic book style game (CO). An american styled game that tried to take it self too serious but still ended up fun when ya dont take it serious(COX), how about one that mixed both Asian style and western style? That would be cool. IMO of course. not trying to convince anyone else.
My suggestion for what I would go with for a MMO wishlist is based on what I would like, and what I think would get mass appeal. -
Quote:Exactly. It wasn't like I didn't get my own fair share of tells asking "Want to ERP" or even more blantant "Want to cyber." You know...in the T rated gameI dont know. I've seen plenty of half dressed characters running around in COX, many with the usual cat ears and tails. This wasa rated teen game and seen many characters push that limit with some costumes where it seems some people's kids play. With all the big boobs here in this game and ERP and etc, B&S is no worse, nor better in that regards. I mean ever since Desdemona came out and been plastered over plenty if COX artwork with her buttcheeks hanging out. Not sure how that is family wholesome.
Truthfully though, in my experience this is just popular in MMOs period :/ I was in TOR (I can make a Chiss Force User now...^_^ So, you know, it's worth playing for me now) and just standing around in the Catina in a popular enough area I sighed to myself.
Not that I'm not used to it, but I just wasnt expecting it. I guess I should have. Slave Leia after all. -
Quote:Really, my idea of a mixing of western and asian styles was int he style of art itself. While no, not wanting it as cartoony as Teen Titans animated series, that would be an example of mixing asian and western styles. As someone who agrees with not wanting a game that looks like B&S, this is just a damn stupid thing to say. There are both plenty of skanky-looking boobtacular superheroes (of which I do not personally approve) in Western comics, and Asian-centric superheroes that are pretty friggin' awesome.
There's no reason a spiritual successor to CoH couldn't have more and better Asian customization options than the game we're playing now. ... I just don't particularly want to play a game where those are the only options.
But really, just need an artistic style that can appease both sides (and it can be done). For artwork for the game, Id stick with the same thing you see in superhero comics now. *shrug* The point is a superhero game.
Hell, there's superhero comics that go realistic looking. So it's not like that's not a possible style for a superhero mmo. I jsut wouldnt care for the art style (hated it when Gary Frank did that in Gen13...think that's the artist who did it). -
Quote:I played on Virtue. Went to the D often enough. Every day I logged in, I saw at least one bikini and heels character (okay, maybe they wore a coat too). Some of the combat looked interesting to me, too. I'd prefer a much more realistic martial arts game, but for something in the fantasy context, the over-the-top, arcade style stuff makes sense.
Seriously? That makes me wonder if we played the same game, frankly. Nothing in CoH even comes close to B&S's level of hypersexuality, as I see it. But this takes us back you your earlier comment about subjectivity. It's an "eye of the beholder" thing.
I should point out that I'm doing my best to assess Blade & Soul without letting my unhappiness with NCSoft color my perception. I'm probably failing in that to some degree. I think I'd still be somewhat aghast at how the female characters are in B&S if the whole CoH closure had never happened...but I'm fallible.
B&S does have higher graphics (it is newer after all) so that could likely be a factor in someone thinking of it more in B&S. Myself, I see the intent of the outfit.
And mind you, this isn't me encouraging people here to play B&S. I know I'm going to try out the game. But even before the CoH closure, I didn't expect many players here on the forums to check it out. Even less so after it's closure.
But I do see B&S having a lot of things asked for by the players here. Greater customization being one of them. Individual fingers being another.
Can make a character without being hyper sexualized. Will everyone do it? No. But I think the amount that do that will be the same amount who do it here (percentage wise anyways). It's either, you will or you won't. -
I regret not having bought that melee defense set that was a perfect mixture of regen/positional defense/self heal!
Oh wait.

Quote:And what is it? To this player it looked like a fun MMO with things people asked for here. Like grappling. Throws.I was just making a bit of a joke (rather obviously, I thought), but please don't presume to tell me what I have and haven't looked into. I have in fact taken a look at the majority of Blade & Soul information available in the West, including dozens of videos, including character creation and gameplay. I "bothered" to look at plenty, thanks.
I stand by my characterizations of Blade & Soul (here and elsewhere). I particularly stand by my description of the female character models, some of the costume options, and animations as absurdly hypersexualized. Some of the female walking animations would embarrass a stripper. I suspect someone's already worked up a tutorial on how to configure the controls to play with one hand...
Hey to each their own...but let's not try to pretend this game is something it's not, m'kay?
Hypersexualized? Yes. But again, nothing I didnt see in CoH (and I saw less a lot more in CoH than I've seen in Aion or B&S) -

Quote:Do I need the fanservice? No. Do I like the art style? Yes. But then I liked the art style from CoH too. I like the art style from WoW. I like the art style in Forsaken World. As long as that cue is "never, ever make anything remotely like the shameless fanservice softcore of Blade & Soul, even with a Sharpie on the back of an envelope on your lunch hour," then I wholeheartedly agree.
And as you say, art is entirely subjective, so YMMV (and clearly, it does!).
By cue, I meant put in a bit of an asian flare. I'd hope for a good mix of a western meets asian style. I think that would give the game more of a mass appeal to all regions.
You see the artwork and think that's the game. You see the fan videos and think that's the game.
What you never bothered to look at (by the sounds of it anyways) is they have outfits that cover up the whole body.
And if I kept to the superhero genre, it would be the player who decides the outfit, as I'd keep the costume customization too. Sooo...any revealing outfits would be because of the player. Just like in CoH where you saw it all the time.
Or if you meant the body type? Well, you really havent bothered to look into the games and see you can make characters who aren't barbies! -
Quote:I'm curious as to this poor record of closing MMOs. You mean the MMOs that just flat out failed miserably? We will hate them until the end of time, and beyond - because even when this universe is no more, the power of our hate will still remain, and become the spark that fires the next universe into existence - and then every atom of that new universe will be born of our hatred of NCsoft, and exist only because of that hatred, and be filled with it, so that all of existence is bathed in the eternal force of our undying hate for NCsoft.
Or we might just decide to avoid purchasing anymore of their products in the future, based on their poor record of MMO closures and the way they handle them.
You mean those MMOs people point at (including you...but not everyone doing the pointing) didn't even bother to play anyways?
You mean how NCSoft closed down MMOs, but Sony has closed down at least two MMOs I can mention to RL friends and they at least knew of them (Matrix Online and SW Galaxies). Mention Exteel, TR, DR, hell for some of them even CoH, and they're "Never heard of them".
Now, I'm not saying don't go ahead with not purchasing anymore NCSoft products. They closed your favorite MMO! But don't try to use the record of lack luster games as the reason for it. You didn't care when those games where closed down by NCSoft untill they closed down CoH. Before the closing of CoH, you were thankful for NCSoft and where more than willing to support them, at least in the "YAY NCSoft!" sense, if not in the actual playing of their other games
And some of the posts saying "BOYCOTT!" are coming from posters who are the types going "What? There were other MMOs? CoH is and will be the only MMO for me."
So, hell, you'd be saying it even if CoH was down to you and 799 other players.
I love CoH! See my forum reg date? I've been playing it sense end of DEC 2004, beginning of Jan 2005, when I saw the box at Wal Mart and was all O.O OOooooo!!! My account lapsed once in all that time, for all of one or two weeks as I waited for my paycheck. I stayed after being banned for three days and they didn't reimburse my three days of paid time.
I have no idea why NCSoft decided to close it. I don't like that they did. But if I was going to boycott NCSoft, it wouldn't be because they closed down a few other MMOs that were failures. And yes, they were failures! They flopped!
At least own up to it. You're boycotting NCSoft because they shut down the MMO you played, not because of their track record, or you would of started boycotting them long ago. -
NCSoft's mistake is not releasing their games across the globe all at once.
Blade & Soul was rated Korea's #1 MMO of 2012, is, last I checked, the number one played MMO in Korea, and what does all that hype do for everywhere else? Nothing
Players now have the attention of a gnat. They'll go back to WoW as soon as they see the no-life, get to max level in two weeks and then leave the game, players leave. Because it's a sign!
Make it so everyone can get to max level that fast, and people complain!
Make it so there is some time investment involved, new players complain!
Don't copy WoW. Take lessons from WoW and other big MMOs, and you can make a world wide hit.
Star Wars had the fanbase. It could of been so much bigger. Seeing as how I doubt they'll make a new Star Wars MMO anytime soon, and likely unable to really adjust TOR to be better, I think the next big IP to really get a huge player base built in, would be Pokemon. -
Quote:I'm curious as to what you mean by "not evolving" The storyline kept getting added to (whether we liked where it was going or not).I really liked a ton of stuff in CoH but it didn't keep evolving and the new issues seemed to be just stale. So, my wishlist would be not to have Miller lead dev on another MMO I might be into. Have him on the team but not as the lead.
What exactly is evolving? New types of missions? Changing the game mechanics constantly? Changing powerset numbers all the time so people didn't flock to them? Making more resistant to a specific type of damage enemies, so people would say "I avoid them because they resist my damage to much" or tougher enemies so people could just not run the content, you know, like how most people avoided Rularuu because they were tougher and not as easy to beat as those Council enemies? -
Quote:Art style is subjective. I really don't care for what people kept telling me was the best graphics with Elder Scrolls. With only 1 good idea out of 6, I don't think you'd make a suitable developer for a Paragon game
Bit of grind. Obviously helps keeps many games more likable through out the regions and not just America's "OMG! I have to beable to level to max level in two weeks and then ***** about lack of content" You know, like we saw in CoH with people complaing the same day of new contents release that they had done everything, so now what do they do?
Superhero game. If you can't build to be the level of Spider-Man, Spider-Girl, ect to solo AVS, it's not a superhero game. Unless you like prefer playing Power Pack level.
And putting IOs, Auction House as game lore was lame. Oh! Look I picked up an inspiration! It's game loreLaaaaaame. Saying badges was in lore too was stupid.
Some things should be left purely as out of character game mechanics versus in character story telling. -
To take a cue from Aion and Blade & Souls character creators!
Take a cue from those games art styles!
Keep it superhero!
Add a bit of grind!
No soloing AVs unless one actually gears up for it (much like many had to do now anyways).
Don't put stupid things like the invention system, auction house, ect as part of in game lore. Leave it purely OOC!
Hire me! -
Depends on who bought it and what they were planning to do with it.
-
Quote:Yeah. Kinda suckie. But being close to an 8 year vet myself, and having a few good IO builds, I'd be okay with it.If it's the same game, I'll be very disappointed if the characters are wiped. Not saying I won't join again, but disappointed. And the loss of all my veteran rewards/paragon rewards would also reduce my enthusiasm.
Even more okay with it if it was just the IP bought and then totally revamped and improved and *droools* Oooooh, the things they could do to make it so much better! -
If someone bought the game, wouldn't it just be better to have everyone start from scratch, if it's shut down for a good length of time?
That way new players can come in and level up with the masses who are now leveling up? -
Quote:No matter how they said it, players would be upset. Also, it could just be habit.Except why did NCSoft resort to PR-speak? Why no clarity?
And the idea that we need to parse it from PR-speak proves that, for all the claims to the contrary, NCSoft hasn't said why they closed the game and fired everyone with no notice and no indications that changes were necessary, and those who say "we know why they closed it" are saying "well, I've got some speculation about why they closed it and I'm presenting it as fact.
Maybe they're planning to make a CoH2 with a new engine, and much more likely to be popular in Western and Asian markets (Of course, I'm in the belief CoH wasn't popular in the Asian market due to game mechanics and not because of genre). -
They even made a popular play about such money making schemes! I think Uwe Bowe even made lots of money doing just that with terrible movies!
