    This shouldn't be a fear!

You have the internet! Use it if you have to!

Sure before coming in the middle may have been a problem, but not anymore.

Also, I came into the middle of storylines when I started reading comics. It's really not that hard to catch up.

Also, don't dismiss the big two companies. You may actually enjoy their stories. As a new reader, you may in fact enjoy their stories more, since you're not bogged down with knowing the past ones.

Also, do you watch television? Have you ever watched a show and said "OMG WTF DI THEY JUST DO TO MY FAVORITE CHARACTER NOOOOOO!"? If so, be prepared to do that with comics as well.

I say they're separate because while I think both of those thoughts, I don't think I'd want Ryan Reynolds to play the main character in the Highlander reboot. Ryan Reynolds is, I think, primarily perceived as a humorous actor. Green Lantern had him in "funny" moments, and I think we all know what kind of character Deadpool is/will be. And most of his non-superhero roles are romantic comedies. While I'm not advocating a super serious grimdark interpretation of Highlander, I think Ryan Reynolds would end up making it a bit lighter than it should be.

I don't really want a Highlander reboot to become a wacky misadventure through medieval Scotland and modern-day New York. And I'm somewhat afraid that if they cast Ryan Reynolds, that's what it'll be.

It wouldn't necessarily be his own fault - the writers and director and producers would likely want to play up his comedic aspects in the film, because of what kind of roles he's had. It's not that he can't be a more serious actor in this theoretical Highlander film, it's more that I'm not sure the filmmakers would let him be one.

But I guess time will tell if this even happens. Even if they do cast Reynolds, I'll still go see it. I love me some Macleod action.
I picture them keeping more in line with the series, but he'd be the Macleod who gave more witty oneliners during a fight than the others.

And roughly 30% of the English language derives from French, so....

In any case, you don't have to like the name, it's mine.

We've established your preferred MO is to covet someone else's name and contrive a way to take it away from them rather than expend a bit of effort to come up with an alternative, so I'm comfortable disregarding your opinion of what constitutes a 'good' name.

I have at least 50 characters I play more or less regularly. Some got their names right off (Nethergoat, for example, or one suggested by my nephew, Bad Guy Controller), but many were the result of trial and error.

I have another Moon themed character, a villainous dominator based on a character from my Champions pen & paper campaign many years ago. In the campaign her name was Lunacy. That was taken. So I went for Lady Lunacy, which wasn't taken.

My fire/rad controller went through a gamut of names before I found the right one- Three Mile Isleman.

    etc etc.

I don't know what point you think you're making here and suspect you've lost the plot yourself.

But to sum up my position:

jacking names other players have already taken = bad

coming up with names other players haven't taken = good
Wow. Hmmm...where have I ever covetted a name? Because I agree with the suggestion I covet names now?

I just think it's a good idea to free up names for people who have been gone for a long time and chances are they're not returning.

If I coveted names, I'd likely go the route other players have gone, reported the person as a copyright infringement when they weren't and then snatch up the name, because the GMs just took the word of the people for it.

Or are you afraid you might go inactive for 3+ years and then return?

As to why people prefer blueside there are many reasons one of the most common ones is that they want to play a hero. Which is fine, go be a hero and do those heroic deeds.

Another common one is that people don't like/are sick of how the zones look.
I've heard many people complain about the lack of SFs. Heck I myself rant every time the WST is announced and we get Ice Mistral x2.Some people have complained about the lack of rewards though AMerits has largely reduced this.

These complaints are fixable but the Devs don't seem to have a response for them. The only comment remotely addressing red side problems is the one about Heroside having more players so more focus is going to go there. Which makes good business sense but is also a horrible Catch 22.
Having played redside and gotten multiple villains to 50 (more heroes I admit), I still don't get behind the more rewards blue side.

Sorry. If you're just running TFs (and believe me, I have nothing against that) and it's just about the merits, run em, get em done, wait...repeat. So blueside has more and some with bigger rewards.

Untill rather recently, Doc Q's bigger reward was due to most people taking over 5hours to complete it.

It's also something I find that is just full time redsiders way to complain about something. Truth is, I doubt redside would be as popular as blue side even if the merit rewards and SF matched up perfectly.

Even the Shield connection was more tightly wound and more personalized in the Downey series (probably the only reason that Coulson's death had the impact it did).

Outside of the Downey cult (as opposed to the cult of Iron Man); only the Hulk managed to position himself as a contender for a cult following. IMO.
I was only commenting that Captain America and Thor were not one shot's who's sequal rided on Avengers. They were already said to have sequals coming, not dependent on Avengers.

Would the world be a perfect place is businesses were all about the integrity of their art (or craft or whatever their product was) and not concerned about the bottom line? Yeah, sure... And it would be great if my farts smelled like roses. Still, ain't going to happen.

*shrug* I just never "buy into" the complaints or publicity stunt or selling out or such because... Well yeah. Obviously.

ANYWAY, as to who it will be...

My guess is they will stay away from villains for this "big announcement" outing as it may rub some advocates the wrong way... Even if just cause advocates like to make noise and have their own publicity stunts so denouncing DC for saying homosexuality is villainous would get them a lot of play.

My guess? Blue Devil. Once had his own book so they can claim he is prominent but yet fringe enough that I don't see any outrage over it being him.
    You're right of course.

My porblem with it though, is it seems like it's going to be an already established character, and one who never showed any signs of the change.

Now, they can easily say "it's a new universe, so he's different in this universe" but then if people don't treat it like they treated new Starfire (since it's a new universe, so she's different in this universe") and don't give it flak like they do with Starfire, it would just be wrong.

Or rather, add spiked collar to detail 1 and keep it in shoulder options as well. that way we can decide if we want to use it as a shoulder option or a detail 1 option

It seems like we've had this conversation, no amount of discussion is going to arrive at any new point, and the devs have already stated that theres no point in running it.

And please dont cite CO as an example...I played that game, unlimited naming options and still found too many "XXxWolverinexXX" "Deadpools Mom" and "Flameguy" s to have any faith in MMO players to name their character in an in-genre acceptable manner.
The devs have said many things then changed their minds.

Also, the one they ran was limited in nature. What is being asked for would open up many more (or so goes the thought).

Of course, even if it did open up a flood of names people do want, FP and HS are correct, you may still not get the name you've been wanting as someone else could beat you to it.

And this isnt even me trying for some name for myself (though...I can think of three I wouldnt mind getting on Virtue), I was actually thinking of others.

I'd rather see a name that seems out of a comicbook over a name that reads as some D&D Fantasy Furry.

It's there character name to do with as they please (well exept the offer to sell it, isnt that against the ELUA?). Suckie, but, look on the bright side, they're not making Spider-Man clones!

  15. I think Leo makes a good point. While I wouldnt care if they did raise Tanker Damage Cap, it's a change that would help only a few tankers.

I like some of his suggestions. Makes for helping out Tankers as a whole, rather than just JB's INV/SS Tanker.

Red side is for the most part a ghost town.

The story line of these "epic archetypes" is fine, for those that choose to immerse themselves in it. I choose not to.

And, I could pl myself to 20 in rwz AE and jump through the necessary hurdles to go blueside. But why? It's completely unnecessary.

I do not think that it is a coincidence that blue side is far more populated than red side. Red side - the devs did such a good job with it - that it literally makes me sad to be there. Spiders and snakes? Why would I want to immerse myself in that environment?

It is not the content I object to - but the depressing environment.
Boomtown is pretty vacant on blueside as well. Small wonder.

Dark Astoria was largely vacant also, except for occasional Adamastor and BP mask hunts.

I'd rather do my zone traveling - if I have to do it at all -in a nicer environment.

But, you all disagree, and you're allowed to.

But I still make the suggestion. There is no VALID reason not to. Not valid to me, anyway.
You're level 20, and tip missions equal xp

They made the announcement for one. These suggestion seems to imply multiple. Unless you're saying only one will come out.

But seeing this list. Haven't all these made an appearance in the new 52 already?

Though, I can imagine them doing it Robin, just to say "Oh hey, look gay superhero in new superhero movie"

Yup. For sure this is nothing more than a publicity stunt. Sadly, it's one that'll get eat up by the gay community. While likely being nothing more than a retcon of the character.

I can care less if a character is gay or straight. But to throw it in as some sort of PCness, or publicity stunt reeks of garbage.

It's like reading a webcomic that throws it in, because oh hey, it's somehow the new cool!

I cannot imagine any super heroine saying to herself "I am a SUPER! I will do great and amazing deeds! The eyes of the entire WORLD shall be upon me!

"...Now, what can I wear that will make my thighs look really, really fat...?"
And yet, we have players who seem to think being in the business of the extremely phsycial (you know, being a superhero) means lots of overweight heroes!
  20. Let's look at it another way.

If the devs did do this.

    1) Those against it, in the end, would most likely shrug and not really care.

    2) Those who were for it, would be happy and continue playing.

    3) Those who lost their names wouldn't likely notice to begin with.

    Might there be exceptions? Hmmm

To 1? Sure. Extreme minority. And likely just to be anal about it.

To 2? Not really. They'd keep playing just as much as they were going to anyways. For some, that's A LOT.

    To 3? Sure. Again minority!

And to those minority in 3? Who cares? They quit. They're not supporting the game at all. They're not even playing when it's free to play, and supporting it just by giving other people more team members to team with.

Last night I had made a character on Freedom to check out the new dark control set. Made the character female, came up with a costume I liked, a typical black/purplish number with a hood. Had in mind some sort of moon/lunar themed name and unsurprisingly my first few choices were taken.

Mulled it over a bit, and came up with Lunette, a word of French derivation meaning crescent or moon-shaped.

    Bingo, not taken.
It's a great name, I'm very happy with it and I didn't have to jack it from another player.
Yay! You used french! Which oh yeah, is what every other player wants to do! Use a foreign language to name their character when they speak english and hell, the character is likely english!

Good thing you know to look up words in other languages to get a free name! *thumbs up*

Which, you know, is what I mentioned as not being what people want to do.

I thought maybe when you said this you picked an english name, it was taken and you some how came up with an equally awesome name that was also in english!

No it doesn't. The name "Forbin Project" can't be used in the game because it is a copyrighted/trademarked IP belonging to a third party. They can only get away with using the name by staying under the GM's radar and hoping they don't get petitioned for copyright violation.
*sigh* You obviosuly didn't read the part where I said "just using your name as an example"

I could of just as easily used Hyperstrike, Golden Girl, Arcanaville, some other forum regular.

But did all those name claimers do it to sell them or did some do it just to do it and keep them, maybe even use them? If the later, then totally original according to those who say "you're original if you get the name first, but not if you try for it and it's taken"

    Sometimes.

And if they keep coming back with ever more selfish, outrageous demands?

When does the foot get put down?
You're right. But this isn't a selfish or outrageous demand. This is pretty reasonable. No one is saying make names available being used by an active account.

Hell they're not saying mark names available from recently inactive accounts. They're saying mark names as available from 3+ years of inactivity.

    That is reasonable.

Do I know some of those names would likely get use? Yup!

I thought your use of "original" in this thread was baffling.

Which was pretty much this, "You're not original if you tried for a name someone else grabbed before you".

That was exactly how it read.

    Have a nice day.
That trial account I made 3 years ago, that still has it's names on it because I leveled up characters on it, and now it sits inactive and I couldnt get back on it because I forgot not only the password I used, but the global name and email addy I used with it.

I don't care if my especially awesome names that were on there get taken by someone else. I would however like them freed up so I or others have a chance at using them, instead of them sitting there unused forever.
