Very important to keep this in mind. I have a Katana/Dark that is softcapped to ranged and AoE (and melee with an application of Divine Avalanche), but it's very easy to get beat up by enemies with serious -Def. This would be doubly important for a toon that has some (but not capped) defense layered with resistances and active mitigation. A group of Romans or a couple Tarantula Mistresses are going to completely strip that away very quickly and leave you scrambling for Healing Flames.

I haven't had experience with /Elec at all, but I'm sure loving my new DM/FA brute. The combination is fantastic, and I'm glad you spoke up in favor of it when I mentioned it a few weeks ago.

Okay, leveled to 35 at this point and still really enjoying the toon. Here's a revised build that fits in Gloom (replacing Shadow Punch) and Consume (I'm finding myself lower on End than I was hoping). Soul Tentacles isn't ideal, but I'll give it a go. I had to drop Dark Obliteration to fit those.
The build should end up pretty inexpensive, but it's not particularly strong on paper. We'll see how it works once I start slotting sets over the next 15 levels! Any advice is welcome.

Thanks for posting all the test results and the numbers to confirm why it went the way it did, guys!
I tried some +0/x8 to start and it was doable, but not particularly easy in the way my Katana/Dark can chew up Rikti. I had a few defense failures in a row and trouble hitting packed Romans. Nothing unexpected there. I ran it a bit higher and gave up before I made significant progress.
It's not that the build is bad at all. It's just a bit focused. I'll pop up my final build from home when I get a chance. It was really fun to play around with Claw's build and tweak it a bit, and fun to test it out in stressful situations. -

Hmmm. I'll take a look at that. I wanted Darkest Night for survivability, but Mu makes sense too. I have Mu already on my SS/Fire brute, so I was leaning toward something different.
I suppose I could stick with Gloom instead of Shadow Punch, which I hadn't considered. -
I'm at level 30 and really enjoying the toon, so I thought I'd take a stab at spending some cash redside to IO it out. I went more for efficiency in slotting rather than tasty set bonuses with a couple exceptions. I ended up with some nice +Acc and +Rech from Crushing Impacts and a few +Recov, +Rech, and +HP buffs here and there, but overall it's on the low end of the global bonus scale.
Survivability at level 30 is really pretty good so far. I mean, it's not up there with my /SR's or /SD's, but it's fun and effective. Between the dark debuffs and my constant ability to heal, I'm pleased. Damage is really strong vs. single targets, mediocre for AoE- though better now that I have Soul Drain and Dark Consumption slotted. I get decent EndRecov between Stamina and Dark Consumption. My first shot at this left out Shadow Punch and had Consume, but I think Midnight Grasp won't fill the chain enough and I'll be left with gaps on a build without lots of +Rech.
I doubt I'll be slotting all this at 50. More likely I'll just pick up IO's from here on, adding them as I gain slots depending on BM availability.
Any advice? Or does this look okay as is?

It sure feels like it hits more consistently! I was in the middle of a group with three of them this morning and it was hard to keep my defense above 10%, never mind 45%. Thanks, Nih.

I'm terrified to do an ITF with her. It'll be a bloodbath with all those Defense debuffs. I ran the Rikti scrapper challenge thingy within the range of a pylon vs 54's without breaking a sweat. Then I got squashed on a radio mission vs +1/x4 Arachnos.
I suspect Alexei's build is much higher end than mine. My build is about as cheap as it can get for a Def capped DA, particularly if someone with more patience did the shopping.
Definitely fun to try something so different, isn't it? I'm still waiting for a moment other than those Rikti 54's that really impresses me, but I'm sure when it happens I'll be pretty darn happy. -
Mmmm. I have a Claws/SR scrapper and a Night Widow without travel powers and Ninja Run is just awesome. Pick up a jetpack for the times when you really need to fly and run about like crazy otherwise! No travel power is far more viable than it ever was a year ago.

I just finished (this morning!) a softcapped Katana/Dark build for my scrapper, Maya the Eternal. I ended up at 52% Melee (w/ two Divine stacked), 45% Ranged, and 44% AoE.
I sacrificed all my global +Rech to get there, so there were definitely some tradeoffs. My build was based on ClawsandEffect's BS/DA one found here ( http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=189427 ).
The build is very strong vs. some foes, but also pretty weak vs. others. For example, Rikti are really easy, but high difficulty Arachnos chew me up pretty good. In general, I'd avoid opponents with high Defense, Defense Debuffs, and -Recharge. I have no problems with some AV's (teamed, not solo), but Scirocco and Lord Recluse stomped me pretty badly during an STF.
I've got a whole bunch of 50's, and despite this being my most expensive level 50 melee build, I wouldn't say it's my strongest. It's partially due to a need for adjustments in my playstyle. I'm playing her a bit like a high defense toon currently, but it's really much more like a normal Dark Armor toon with a very nice extra layer of survivability. Unfortunately, I can't play it like I did pre-defcap as my overall accuracy and recharge are so far down from previous levels.
I'll have to come to a new comfortable technique at some point, but initial impression are that my Claws/SR scrapper, DM/SD scrapper, Night Widow, and SS/SR brute all deal more damage and have better and more consistent overall survivability vs. foes like Romans, Arachnos, and Nemesis, but the Katana/DA is more survivable vs. Rikti (in particular), Carnies, Malta, Crey. The damage is coming across a little lackluster compared to my other toons, though. -

It's not so much fun as it is hectic hyper-speed excitement. I get a big sense of accomplishment at having a toon that can do content like that very quickly, even if my fast times aren't exactly going to impress some of the crazy fast folks.
But anyhow, great TF at regular and slow speed. -

Thats an eternity in the speed-run world.
I'd say most average runs with a SG team or a pug are clocking at 30-40 minutes unless they are really pushing the clock. It's a far cry from the early runs! -
You really should try to make an ITF, TJ. Especially if you can find one that is run at a slower pace of 1-2 hours instead of the 30-60 minute rush. It's really a great TF.
