I am really excited about this show. Been looking for something to pick my interest up in television again, and I think this is the one.
Plus, it's cool that the graphic novelist that made the original is from my hometown. -
As a long time supporter of the Dragon Ball property, and having grown up on it, I can honestly say that seeing the franchise plummet into the abyss of GT made me genuinely sad. ;(
Although, I did enjoy every filler episode. -
I for one am thrilled that they are rebooting the series like the Ultimate comics. I LOVED those comics, and have every graphic novel compilation.
Also, I would love to see Lizard finally.
...With minimal CG, please. >_< -
...Have you ever SEEN the show? She might as well be Hitler for how evil she is. O_O
And also, yes, this chart was incredibly accurate. And if you understood all the references, incredibly funny as well! -
The only way this could be more epic is if they added X-Men, Justice League, Godzilla, and the entire cast of the classic novel, "Heidi!"

Has anyone else ever attempted to RP with somebody who is firmly convinced superpowered people don't exist anywhere outside Paragon City of The Rogue Isles?
Quite a long time ago, I started a new character and found a sewer team, which happened to be an RP team. We were all having fun, and it was all good stuff. But this one guy on the team (who was very much new to the game, BTW) was RPing a transferred cop from the NYPD. He was supposed to be a new detective for the PPD. He stated several times that he had "never seen anyone with super powers before." This is just as ludicrous as any time a citizen states that "they've never met a hero before." Yeah right, lady. But his whole concept revolved around his character's strong opinion that heroes shouldn't be "wandering the streets like a criminal, using violence against people at their whim, without any sort of license." Which as we all know, is not true. Heroes (at least in Paragon!) are very much licensed, and even paid for what they do.
Anyway. The team didn't berate the newbie... but we did subtly try to convince him that his character was both a bigot to superpowered people (which to be fair, he did rather seem like it), and somewhat blind to the world. I mean, in a city like New York, there has to be SOME powered individuals, and there's nothing that says someone that can fly wouldn't decide just to be a lawyer or grocery store owner or head chef at a fancy French restaurant. How could he NOT see a bright blue mutant walking down the street, or some alien hero beating off thugs in any given alley?
Have any of you ever found people like this, and if so, how did you manage to RP with someone who was not only convinced there were NO powered people ANYWHERE but Paragon, but also refused to act otherwise? Personally, it aggravated me, but I had fun basically making the guy re-conceive his character traits from a street-smart detective unused to heroes and biased against them, to a racist, somewhat stupid cop who hated even the concept of a superhero. -
Awesome story! I am really impressed!
Please keep writing! -
You must listen to the THREE M'S OF METAL
Metallica's "Ride The Lightning"
Megadeth's "Rust In Peace"
Motörhead's "Another Perfect Day"
With these three albums you will have speed, anger, heaviness, and melody. You will have vocals ranging from the nasal to the chain smoking. They are all MASTERPIECES of metal.
Also, I cannot suggest Clutch enough. They are like... heavy funk-blues. It is truly awesome to listen to. Makes you want to start dancing and head-banging at the same time. A must-listen album is "Blast Tyrant."
And for longevity and importance to all of metal, I would HIGHLY suggest Dio. Anything at all by Dio. His Black Sabbath years have some of the best Sabbath albums of all time. His time with Rainbow produced some of my personal favorite albums and songs of all time. And of course, his solo career has some of the coolest classic metal songs ever made. Even his blues-rock with Elf is inspired and amazing!
Must listen to albums should be, in order of being made...
"Elf" by Elf. "Rising" by Rainbow. "Holy Diver" by Dio. "Dehumanizer" by Black Sabbath.
(Warning! Although all things by Dio sound somewhat Metallic, the bands that he was in range from piano-driven blues-rock to classic rock to doom metal! Dio is only consistent in his song writing ability, not in his style of songs!) -
-
Captain Vaserbeam, a Rad/Dark Corrupter whose powers are all recolored to the same nasty, dirty greenish brown. It's supposed to be that he's taking all of the pollution in the area and redirecting it in a condensed form. Which is why all of his powers weaken, slow down, or damage the enemy in some way.
In contrast, his costume is incredibly bright and silver agey. -
Nerdocracy.
Where WE rule! And every country would be based off a certain fandom! If you are a fan of something, you MUST move to the country that represents that thing, to not disturb the people around you!
Star Wars, for instance, would have a huuuuuuuge population.
Cottage Cheeseland, however, would be much smaller. Hard to find many die-hard fans of cottage cheese. -
All of these are very interesting opinions!
I had never thought of the fact that Recluse basically encourages the insanity that goes on every day. Like someone mentioned, he's less a full-on dictator, and more like just some bored god, watching as his subjects kill themselves. And not caring.
Quote:I'd say that this a perfect idea of what the citizens of the Rogue Isles tend to act like. Good work.As to the culture of the Isles, I imagine the stereotype for a Isle's Citizen is that you can't trust them, but they are tough and survivors. Probably because the only people to get out of the Isles are tough and too independent to be crushed under Recluse's heel. They're streetwise and the kind who keep track of who enters and leaves a room. They don't trust anyone until they've shed blood together, (metaphorically perhaps) or they might never.
Quote:But I don't know if this music would be punk though. Considering the close proximity of the Rouge Isles to the Caribbean, I'd expect this music would be some form of calypso (Long a music of current events and protest.), one the many off-shoots of reggae (Again music long associated with protests.), Cuban jazz and salsa or perhaps something Haitian-flavored.
Considering the highly distinctive culture of the Rogue Isles and the fact it is a kind of global cross-roads, I think they'd invent something very distinctive from the rest of the Caribbean. There'd be influences from Africa, Central America, the colonial powers of Europe (France maybe?) and the United States and this would emerge into a musical genre we haven't heard of here in the real world.
Make up something, is my advice.
Unless, of course, you just mean that it has had a lot of Pirate influences over the years, and THEY brought it with them. Which is possible. -
Tanks. They used to be my ALL TIME favorite AT, but for some reason, every time I try to make one nowadays I just... stop. It's weird.
-
An interesting question arose in my head the other day as I was thinking about making a punk-rocking villain in the Rogue Isles that was going to be extremely patriotic about his country, and hellbent on getting both Arachnos AND the Longbow invasion out, to set up a beneficial anarchic rule.
My first question was, "Is the genre of punk even is EXISTENCE in RI?" This one I didn't quite have an answer for. We know that Johnny Sonata is their most popular artist (due to selling his soul, but still). He seems to be a sort of singer/songwriter, probably writing mostly lounge tunes. My guess is that any up-and-coming artists in RI would be trying to imitate him as much as possible, so the RI pop scene probably consists of a LOT of old fashioned lounge singers and jazz groups. This is also probably the kind of music that Recluse likes, being from a time period where this was quite popular in America.
And that brings up the fact that Recluse is a dictator. Would he regulate music? It's almost DEFINITE that he would not allow any rebellious music to exist, and I find it unlikely that he would even allow music genres that are against his tastes in any way, or could possibly be used to incite rebellion. So does that destroy rock music?
Anyway, back to the original question. Would punk music even exist? If so, how? RI has stayed away from a lot of outside influences on their culture since the 1950's, according to their history page. Was the music culture in RI influenced at all by American rock 'n' roll and blues? Did the islanders shun outside culture in any form, including music? Did they have some sort of native style of music that was popular? Are there any traditional instruments in use on the Island, possibly throwbacks to the days where sorcerers ruled the island?
But what would punk even LOOK like, then? Would it even be the genre of punk? Or would it just be rebellious? Logically, it would have to be extremely underground. Their musical instruments would have to be anything that is easy to just pick up and run with. Possibly marching band-esque instruments, but with the speed and aggression that tends to spring up wherever people are angry. Possibly totally acoustic, to defeat the need to carry around any amps, unless they can carry them on their backs.
And all this raises yet ANOTHER question! Would this style of underground music, or ANY underground music, even be popular? Would the populace be too scared of getting caught to even want to watch music like this? Or would it be INCREDIBLY popular, fueled by the downtrodden masses wanting change?
Marching Twotonecore?
Second topic.
What about other aspects of RI culture? Their food would have to be heavily French-influenced, due to their time being a French colony. Would any traditional dishes have lasted the years? Possibly some sort of Seagull or shark-based dishes, since it seems like there a LOT of both of these animals. Very few vegetables seem capable of even growing in the environment of the Isles, so most dishes are probably fish.
What about the people? What is their thought process? My guess is they are a very naturally secretive, paranoid people. Afraid to look anyone in the eye, afraid to even have any friends. Or maybe I'm wrong? Maybe they collect friends, act as if they are family, and then try to stick together and protect each other as much as possible.
And that's all I got. It was written straight from my head, with many questions and answers springing up as I was writing, so if it seems a bit disjointed... it is.
Anyway, discuss! -
It would seem that it is basically Providence with completely different geography.
-
If you're looking for something hiphoppy, I cannot stress Gorillaz enough.
If you want someone that does a LOT of sampling (but well!) I would go with DJ Shadow.
If you want some really cool, ambeint, eclectic, and/or operatic music, but the Starcraft 2 soundtrack. That music is straight-up incredible.
And if you're into something more progressive and metallic than all of the above, check out Ayreon. Great prog metal band, and usually leans a bit more into the prog than the metal. Uses a lot of sythesizers, keyboards, and ambient noises.
And those are my suggestions. -
Cyclops, hands down. I mean, I open my eyes. A lot, believe it or not. I would hate not being able to do so for fear of chopping the head off of the girl I'm checking out from across a room. It would REALLY ruin my night.
-
In the words of Tony the Tiger.
"This looks grrrrrrrrrrreat!" -
Although I love just about everything they make, I wish Ghibli would make another Princess Mononke or Grave of the Fireflies. Something dramatic, visually striking, and with great characters'but also containing a substantial amount of physical danger present. I LOVE a great story and am more and more concerned every day with how much people want to see movies only for action, but... can't we have a LITTLE bit, every once in a while? Please? >_>
-
I would, but my iTunes tore decided to stop working for me, so I can't update my genius. Or my Itunes. Or buy any music on it. Or have it automatically know what CD I just placed in my computer. Or really anything useful at all. >
PS- Does anyone have any advice to fix this? Might as well ask it here. >_>
PS AGAIN- Nice musical tastes there, Friggin Taser. I approve. -
Quote:I do the same thing. When I buy music I usually buy a LOT all at once. I then spend about a week keeping all of the songs on Shuffle, and listening to them, and rating them. Thus, I never get bored with one genre or one style of music or even one album, and get a large variety of things to listen to, while at the same time rating them all so that I only listen to GOOD songs when I put my Top Rated on shuffle. Very useful.Me, I rate all of my individual tracks on a 1-5 star scale (which most music programs conveniently support.) Anything below a 3 never really gets listened to... and really, that's about 40% of stuff on most albums, unless I particularly like the band. Hell, there are albums by bands I love that have a whole one or two songs worthy of 3+ stars. This cuts down on the effective size of my collection quite a bit, and it means I never have to listen to that one song that isn't very good and was just put on to pad out the album.
Quote:The downsides that I've found are, well, you need to spend the time to review all the music, first of all.
And speaking of listening to a bunch of music, I recently helped a friend move out of his house, and as a gift, he gave me a ton of music. So I now have 41 used albums, most of it from artists I enjoy, for completely free. Gleeeeeeeee! -
Quote:Personally, I would look at each song to decide what is and what isn't metal. For instance, Immigrant Song is pretty darn hard, but Nobody's Fault But Mine is a very, very soft song. Same goes for every other band.[font=Garamond][size=3]
All of the stuff I thought was metal when I was young isn't metal anymore. AC/DC: not metal, according to professional metalheads. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple? Zep was the canonical example of a metal band when I was growing up. Their records are not metal anymore.
Quote:I also enjoy bluegrass and traditional Americana, especially murder ballads and other stuff that's actually just our inner Celt coming out. -
Another great story! And it's so cool to meet a member of an awesome new band whose CD I plan to buy.
Speaking of which, do we have any other musicians reading this, professional or otherwise? Personally, I play drums, both a full set and various hand drums. I play a full set by myself just practicing, and play a pair of congas for my church's band, which is really more like a jam band than a worship team. Lots of improv going on, and how we play a song and/or the song itself changes a lot while we play.
I also recently went to Nicaragua and was taught how to play Latin beats on hand drums... a skill I have promptly forgotten and have struggled to remember. Ah well. That's what Youtube is for. -
Quote:Hahahaha. This actually made me laugh. Although I don't HATE Owl City, I certainly dislike them and can feel your pain here. The only musician I can think of that I loathe is Owl City. Cheese and rice on a cracker. I literally get headaches when his music pops up on the radio and the lyrics are so stupid that they make me want to punch things. I'd stick to the country station for the next 5 years if I thought it meant I'd never have to hear him, but my wife occasionally listens to him when she's showering. Always the most irritating 20 minutes of the day.
Quote:Originally Posted by Friggin TaserFor reasons I'm can't fully understand yet, I've been in love with the music of Medicant Downline for a while. A mixture of industrial rock and video game music that seems to go along with any CoH play session? Yes please!
Thank you SO MUCH, Taser. Thank you for showing me this band. They are the PERFECT mix of electronics and guitars, a beautiful mash up of dance and technical prog. You sir (or madam, I'm not sure) are my hero. I have been looking for complicated, difficult electronica for a loooooong time.

Second, that's not derailing the thread. It's talking about musicians, which is what this thread is for. Stories of all kinds are welcome, as long as they have some sort of tenuous connection to music in some way.

Anyway, to continue where others seem to have gone...
My musical tastes don't reflect me at all. I am a very laid back, kind, and honestly very nice and helpful person. However, I listen to a whole lot of super aggressive metal. It takes a lot of people off guard. I seem more like a pop-rock or easy listening guy to a lot of people.
My favorite bands at the moment are...
Black Sabbath. Not really "aggressive" per se, but awesome. Dehumanizer is an underrated album, BTW.
Megadeth. Endgame is SO GOOD
Tourniquet (So very, very, very unknown. Needs more advertising.)
Alice Cooper! Everyone knows School's Out. Does anyone know anything ELSE by the master of monsters? If not, YOU SHOULD
Motörhead. Although famous, it seems like nobody under the age of 30 knows who they are. This is very unfortunate.
Clutch! A fairly new band with a great sound. Sort of occasionally Zeppelin-esque heavy blues metal. Deep voiced vox. Great sound, I highly suggest looking them up.
Honorable mentions to Metallica, Ozzy, Dio, Voivod, The Mars Volta, Alestorm, Anthrax, Ayreon, Danzig, Flotsam And Jetsam, Kamelot, Living Colour, Carlos Santana, Overkill, Primus, Queen, Queensrÿche, Pantera, Testament, and Wolfmother. And a slew of other random people that I like but do not actually own anything by.
As far as listening to music while ingame, I usually go with fast, energetic, and occasionally cheerful things. Although with my AR/Fire Blaster, I seem to listen to exclusively slow, calm songs. No idea why.Doesn't even fit the character.
And as an afterthought, I must add that in my hometown of Taylorsville, Kentucky, NO-ONE besides my brother, my best friend, and I like any of this music. I will roll down the windows to my car and play something fairly popular and commercially loved like The Who, and STILL get funny looks. I live in the land of country music. Sigh.
Speaking of country, at work today I was in the back just working and tuning everything out. My coworkers had the radio out front. I wasn't even paying attention.
Then, suddenly, the music caught my attention. A ska beat with lots of steel drums and horns was playing. I hear ska so little in this area that I smiled and kept working. Then something WEIRD happened.
The singer came in. It was a COUNTRY SINGER.
In a ska song.
I'll let you process that for a moment.
And it gets better. As this unholy mashup of ska and country continued, and I just sat slack-jawed, a GUITAR SOLO happened. A rather fast, heavy, distorted guitar solo. In a ska song. Sung by what sounded like a man from Alabama.
What was this bizarre freak of nature? I have no idea. I didn't catch either the name, or the band that made it. My only question is HOW did this find its way to the local pop/country/soft rock station? And what do you CALL this new genre of music? Skountry? Skountrock? Skantry? I honestly don't know.
Anyway... continue the conversations, everyone.
EDIT- Holy crud this was a long post. I probably killed the thread.
