Quote:This is one of the main reasons I have no interest in CoH PvP - yet still PvP in other games.People want their flying AR/devices to perform at the same level as a fire/em blaster. That is doesn't work. It doesn't work in PvE it doesn't work in PvP.
There's always going to be some imbalance, some powers or combos that are more effective than others. However, in CoH we get a much higher volume of powers and potential builds than the majority of other MMOs (and *way* more than most PvP dedicated games), and the powers/spells/skills tend to all be running at much higher power levels here than other games. So when imbalance does occur, it tends to be of a much higher magnitude than I've found elsewhere - and probably less likely to be fixed/addressed.
That doesn't matter so much in PvE because a) we only need to be strong enough to defeat the mobs and that's easier to keep to a certain level, and b) CoH's PvE is pretty easy so even the weaker builds can thrive.
When I play FPS games there tends to be less choice (in some, no choice at all, though that's less common these days), and the choices tend to be less significant. So while imbalance still exists - because perfect balance is basically impossible - the impact of which class and weapon/skill loadout I've selected is far lower, and my skill (or lack thereof) in the actual combat is still usually the determining factor. This is usually true even of other MMORPGs because they usually have much more restrictive choices, and a spell or power in those games tends to have far less impact than one here (especially in areas of mezz and buff/debuff). It's part of why I generally lose interest in the PvE in those MMOs and come back to CoH, but it's also why I usually do quite a bit of PvPing in them before my interest drops off.
So yeah, perfect balance isn't really achievable, but the imbalances tend to be a lot more manageable and lower magnitude in other games, so that's where I do my PvPing. -
I'm 110 points short just now
My stipend is due tomorrow -
I tried CoH PvP and didn't much enjoy it. It's not that I dislike PvP in general - I've enjoyed PvP in some other MMOs, and play my share of online FPS games - nor is it the issue of trash talk and horrible attitudes - I'm used to just tuning out that part of internet behaviour - but in CoH the PvP experience just didn't grab me (fwiw, the same was true of PvP in CO when I was still playing that).
I haven't given a huge amount of thought as to why - I guess a mix of the balance issues inherent in having so many build choices (doesn't matter as much in PvE where you don't need to be stronger than everyone else, just stronger than the mobs) and that the combat and gameplay in CoH just didn't seem to mesh well with PvP to me (though I'd struggle to explain exactly why).
To be honest I don't really feel inclined to give any more thought to it than "nah, didn't like it" - I have lots of other games to go to when I want my PvP fix so I'm happy to just accept that I didn't enjoy it in CoH - no matter what (if anything) they do with it, I'll likely not bother trying it again. -
Quote:Disclaimer: I'm not 100% sure if this'll all work. One of my biggest annoyances with CoX is that the game remembers your UI settings based on the resolution of the last system you used. I have four machines I might play on and each of them has a different resolution - 1600x900, 1920x1080, 1920x1200 and 2560x1600.
So my bars move around. I leave some of my machines in windowed mode just so I don't have to deal with stuff moving around.
Something that might help ease that inconvenience are the commands /wdwsavefile <filename> and /wdwloadfile <filename>.
Basically /wdwsavefile lets you save your current UI layout to a file, and /wdwloadfile will retrieve the UI layout from a file.
So you could set up one wdw file for each PC you use and set up a keybind or macro on all of your characters to load those files in an instant.
i.e. boot up in 1600x900, set up your UI, then go "/wdwsavefile 1600x900.txt" and repeat that for each resolution. Then something like "/bind <key of your choice> wdwloadfile 1600x900.txt" and repeat that for each wdwsavefile you made. Set up those binds on each character and, in theory, when you play on a different PC from last session you just hit the keybind that loads the relevant wdw file for that resolution/PC.
The only potential issue might be if you use different layouts for each character, in which case you'd need to do separate wdw files for each one (which could get messy). -
Here's mine. Some characters will have an extra tray or two in the same configuration as tray 4, depending on how many temp powers etc they have (that they use).
I'm mostly a clicker, but if I lose my cursor I'll switch to keybinds until I find it again, and location powers I usually bind to shift/ctrl/alt + lbutton. Also, a couple powers get to sit in my mouse side buttons.
And since it was mentioned: I use popmenus, but can't screenshot those (hitting print screen with one open just closes it, instead of screenshotting). All of my characters have one for the various teleporter powers, and my MMs get one for summoning pets and another for commands.

$15 plus subscription (which I buy yearly).
The only things I'm really interested in are powersets - I 'buy' every one they release - and costume pieces - at a very very rough guess I 'buy' about half of them. Buy in inverted commas as my stipend has covered almost all of it so far. -
Personally I've "bought" all the powersets with my stipend alone, because those are what matter to me most. I've only made a single payment outside my subscription, to pick up some costumes (1200 points worth).
The way I look at it is the stipend isn't really having to pay extra for the items, it's just giving me some choice about what is and isn't included free to VIPs these days - if I wasn't interested in Beast Mastery I'd be able to pick something else to be free instead. -
I'm seeing 25% recharge resistance in the tier 1 pets' resist power. I've not been paying attention for a while, but aren't all pets inherently immune to recharge debuffs anyway? I thought that was a side effect of also making them immune to recharge buffs.

I'd be very, very surprised if they hadn't thought of this on their own. I'd expect absolutely *everything* they're developing or have on the wishlist/backburner these days will be given consideration regarding its viability as a Paragon Market item as a matter of course, forum thread or not.
-
Probably they want to ensure a full team too, and don't mind waiting longer than the LFG system would to get it.

I finally got to make Biowraith as a Dark/Dark controller. Now I just need to be able to make him a Dark/Dark/Dark controller...

Just to add myself as a datapoint:
I'm very much an introvert. I'm also shy, struggle with social interaction, and I generally don't form friendships easily, especially not lasting ones. Indeed, I don't really have any friends in-game, besides a couple people that'll show up for a week or two a couple times a year.
When it comes to preferences: I dislike soloing, enjoy teaming, and dislike multi-team leagues.
I do run the incarnate trials a fair bit (got one char T4'd out, a few T3'd, and a swathe of alts in various states of incarnateness below that), but I run them in spite of the multi-team leagues, not because of them.
All that said, most of my reasons for disliking the multi-team leagues do not stem from my introversion or those personality quirks/flaws that inhibit the social aspects of my life (in-game or out). -
Quote:It's been at least a year since I last looked at all this stuff so I might be misremembering (or it might have changed), but my hazy memory is that for the tier 1 bots only their heavy single target attack can knockback - their light single target and their cone cannot. I definitely remember trying the proc in them and being disappointed with it.I haven't played Robots for a long time. I thought tier one Robot has two attacks that can knock back? If it's just one, then use it for pet unique.
As for Grave Knight, I find that they don't use broadswords enough. It's a shame that they didn't give GK Accurate Tohit Debuff because they use Dark Blast attacks way more often. I would put negative proc from ATD set.
And for Grave Knight, although they maybe don't use the broadswords quite as often as Jounin use their Katanas, I find they still use them enough to make it worth slotting that extra Lady Grey - it's not like there's a lot else to slot that'd be more useful (maybe the buildup proc I guess). -
Quote:Agree with most of this, with a few exceptions:Merc - put both Negative damage and -resistance debuff procs, and put chance for smashing knock back in Commando (he can trigger with 3 aoe attacks and slug)
Ninja - put both negative and -resistance in Jounins and slot Genins with purple build up proc (since Genins attack the most frequently of all MM pets)
Robot - put chance for smashing knockback set in tier 1 and assault robot
Thug - put both negative damage and -resistance in Enforcers
Demon - put chance for smashing slow set in Demon Prince
Necro - put chance for negative damage in Lich and -resist proc in Grave Knight
I'd give Grave Knights the Lady Grey negative damage proc as well as the -resist one.
The chance for smashing knockback in tier 1 robots only has a chance to fire on one of their (three?) attacks, which although not useless isn't as attractive as most of the other proc slottings mentioned here - you may have other things that would be more valuable in that slot (e.g. one of the def or res aura uniques).
I'd be torn with Enforcers as to whether to slot the procs, or use the slots to enhance their defense (Maneuvers). It'd depend somewhat on my secondary. -
Er, Reactive's -res definitely does stack the effect, even from the same user. Just tested it to be sure using a Bane (so I could Surveillance to monitor the target's resistance buffs/debuffs) with the tier 1 25% chance of -res version and got 3-4 stacks going.
Pretty sure the DoT portion still works as described in the rest of this (old) thread too. -
Quote:Ah right, thanks.ALL TFs/Trials in the game [with the exception of the CoP] are added to the TuT, also you can now use it while inside a mission so you can simply Que up for the selected TFs/Trials you wish to take part in and carry on as usual.
That just reinforces my confusion at what the devs are aiming for though; Those changes are further encouraging us to use the TUT to form leagues, but leagues that by design will be PUGs (and probably sub-optimal, even for PUGs).
So the system used to access the trials - if we use it the way the devs apparently envisage - will generate leagues that aren't actually intended to be able to complete (some of) those same trials. That seems a bizarre approach to me.
I don't suppose it'll really affect me or most others, since I'm sure the vast majority will continue to pre-form leagues for even the now-routine trials, but it does leave me scratching my head a bit.
Oh well, I guess there's no point dwelling on it further - cheers for the info. -
Quote:I'm unfamiliar with the changes - does it alleviate the issues it would have with non-PUGable trials? Not everything is designed to be PUGable. Majority of content ingame is able to be completed by a PUG, some parts arent.
This same rule applies to iTrials. Most of them can be completed by a PUG, two cannot and need some form of preperation beforehand.
[Also the TuT is far more useful now in i22 in its new state]
I don't have any particular stake or strong opinion in this, it just seemed really odd that the devs would be adding non-PUGable trials to the TUT when previously they've given the distinct impression they were very disappointed that we don't just let the TUT form our leagues for us - and were pushing to encourage us to do just that (a method that would obviously result in PUG teams). -

Customization in terms of costume/appearance - yeah, there might be a lack of detail in some areas, and some features missing that are in other games, but overall there's a heck of a lot of choice, with so many concepts that you can represent with it.
Customization in terms of build etc - as many ATs as most games have classes, and then the second layer of all the different Primary/Secondary(/Pool/Ancillary) combinations. And that's before even considering enhancements and IO set bonuses. I find CoH superior to pretty much every other MMO when it comes to the number of alts I find myself wanting to make, and the amount of time I (happily) spend planning out potential builds.
Teaming & Sidekick/Exemplar - one thing that really makes CoH for me is that almost all content is potential team content, and almost all content is potential solo content. It doesn't matter what level you are, where you are in your quest chain, or even necessarily what 'class' or 'role' your character fills; anyone can team up with anyone at any time and the game'll scale things (tweaked with difficulty settings) to make it worth your while.
The teaming is probably the thing I miss most when I take a break and play other MMOs for a while (as I'm doing just now). I can put up with the limited appearance options, the handful of generic classes with only a few viable builds, and even the rigid group roles and requirements. But I really miss seeing a friend who's not been online for the last couple weeks log in and be able to immediately jump in and team with them, without worrying about level differences, or whether we're on the same quests, or that maybe two dps will struggle when we hit the elite/heroic/whatever quest (such that we'll probably end up just soloing our own quests and restricting our interaction to chatting only). -
Quote:And apparently "girl" used to be the term for all children, male or female. You had to qualify it with "knave" or "gay" if you wanted to be more specific.Just had to throw in my two cents on this once, since I'm a massive nerd when it comes to "Altered English". Over the Centuries, many English words have shifted from their original purposes and acquired vastly different meanings. This process is a continuous one, as can be seen in today's word "bad, " whose meaning is now its own opposite: "great." As another example, consider England 500 years ago. Then, "improve" meant "to make progress in that which is evil." And there was no romantic "tryst" with a man or woman; then the word meant "a fair for black cattle, horses, and sheep"!

I don't really mind either way. I mean, having everything earnable in-game is my default preference (I'm already paying a subscription here after all), but for convenience type items like this I don't mind if they're cash shop exclusives.
The only time cash shop exclusives really bother me is when it's stuff that is part of a character's progression - the obvious example being enhancements (and new versions thereof). -
Dark Miasma.
It was the first powerset I tried, back in beta, and it was my main for release. I played through the journey of it going from actually being kinda sucky right through to the relative powerhouse it is today. I still play my original character, along with various DM alts created since then.
2nd place goes to Crab Spider (so it's both an AT and a powerset-pair). I don't have quite the history with it that I do with Dark Miasma (obviously, as it's not been in existence as long), but it quickly became my favourite character, possibly even surpassing my Dark Miasma characters - both for its power and the aesthetic. It's definitely my main character redside. -
Quote:Zwillinger HITS you! Placate power was autohit. Now for the new stuff:
- ATOs (Archetype Enhancements) will be purchasable from the Reward Merit Vendor, for a combination of Reward Merits and Inf, and from Astral Christy, for a combination of Astral Merits and Inf. There will be a cooldown timer on the purchase of these items. The amount of Inf and duration of the cooldown are still being discussed and will be evaluated once all of this hits beta. This is in addition to their availability in Super Packs.
- Enhancement Catalysts will be added to the game as rare drops from enemies defeated during Incarnate Trials and in the upcoming newly Incarnated Dark Astoria. Like ATOs, this is in addition to their availability through Super Packs.
-
They've been doing that for a while now - I've had two of them try it, well before the $0.99 VIP offer was available.
