I have to admit, when I first read Positron's reasoning of why they can't tell us where the line is because people would play right at the line it made sense to me.
Then I read some of the speed limit analogies and it made less sense. If there is a level speed limit, why not just come out and say it?
The reason they can't is the same reason we have entire books on traffic laws. It isn't just the speed. It's all the other things that are unsafe.
If you drive the speed limit but weave in and out of lanes, drive on the wrong side of the road, taligate, or hit pedestrians, you still get a ticket. It may not be a speeding ticket; it might be reckless driving or a myriad of other less well defined violations.
They could very easily define what the speed limit on leveling is. For the sake of argument, let's say they defined it as 1-50 in ten hours. But if someone found a way to press a clicky to get 1-49 in 10 minutes that would still be exploitive and would need to be addressed.
Don't misunderstand me. I don't think they handled this well. I thought the tone of Positron's post was wrong, I thought the punishments were too severe, and in several cases punished innocent individuals. But I don't think they can define "exploit" . . . at least not without having entire volumes of books dedicated to all the different ways one could exploit. And then having to amend those everytime someone found a new way.
I play City of Heroes because it's fun. I don't think I'd find City of Lawyers to be as much fun. -

Wow. It's fun to see Flea stoop to such depths.
It makes me smile.

Fleas don't have to stoop. We're born low. -
I just wanted to post on behalf of LazerJudads, who left but never said goodbye. He doesn't play anymore. He just posts a lot of his opinions.
He likes to argue. He doesn't give a FRAK about your opinion.
He's badder than Leroy Brown and hopes that you threaten him so that he can tell you how he can beat a squad of Navy Seals and a grizzly bear with his bare hands and a knife he carved out of a pine cone with his canines.
Bye Judads. -

I can't win. -
I'm still pissed over how things were handled, but I'm not ready to hang up my superhero tights . . .yet.
I did cancel my second account as a protest. If they weren't willing to listen to me complain on the boards, then maybe they would notice a loss of subscriptions.
I'm not even sure what the remedy should be. What do we want them to do? The mistakenly erased characters have been restored with an apology and [WillSmith] a lil somthin somthin [/WillSmith].
They aren't going to apologize to the folks they believe were exploiting the system, nor do I think they should. I do think that Positron's angry post was a bit too stern. And I do think that banning AND deleting was a bit too much. But you don't apologize to the lawbreaker for getting too stiff of a sentence.
I feel that I should get an apology, but honestly and objectively, I don't deserve one. The worst thing that happened to me was a couple of my posts were deleted.
Maybe it's not so much an apology as a statement of recognition that they have made mistakes, they have heard our pleas and will be less punitive in the future and NEVER, EVER, run a ban script again. -
Can I hug you while hula-ing, or would the hip action kill me?
I hope things turn around and you can stay, Manoa. If not, best of luck to you. -

3)Call CS.
4)Write the dev's mail.
But yelling and ultimatums and threats, well, they just have the opposite effect and make people like me talk on the forums. You don't want that now do you?
[/ QUOTE ]
I have done all of the above except for #3. I'm not sure who I would call and what that would accomplish beyond what I've done. I'm not petitioning to have something on my account changed. I'm petitioning for a change to the way I and others are being treated.
But I also want to post about it. It helps me to vent. Someone might convince me I'm wrong. Others might show support and state they feel the same. It was very frustrating during the first few days not being able to do that.
I don't think that I am yelling and making threats, but I am still upset about it (admittedly less as time goes on). But maybe it seems that way . . .
I dunno . . . It's hard to judge how you are coming across to a digital audience.
Thanks for your response. -
MrDead,
What do you think that we, as players, should do if we disagree with the service or treatment we have been getting from a game we play a monthly subscription for? -

My Scrappers:
DM/Regen - 50
MA/Regen - 50
BS/Shield - 50
I think the rarest primary is Dual Blades or Fire Melee and Dark Armor and wins for secondaries.
I had seen more DB when they first came out but it seems to have died down quite a bit. It seems to me that only a few people that run in my circles played their DB to 50. -
To TonyV:
I appreciate your last post more than your previous few on this thread. It shows more thought and less rage.
I can also appreciate the Devs clamping down on the "Meow" farms. It seemed like the only thing going on for a few days to a week and it was getting to me too.
I have no problem with the Devs shutting down loopholes like the Comm Officers. But I do expect them to show some discretion and restraint when dealing with paying customers.
In your example, Starbucks has a posted no solicitation policy. To extend the anology a bit: it's one thing to shoo the panhandlers away and quite another to gut punch a hobo that walks in with the money to pay for a cup of coffee and then kick out all the other customers that speak up against that treatment.
If Starbucks wants to keep my patronage they need to serve good coffee at a fair price in a pleasant atmosphere and treat their customers with respect. If they ask a rude customer (or panhandler) to leave, I'll applaud. But if they gut punch the innocent, I will walk away and take my business elsewhere. -

I don't have any fancy facebook or mamby-pamby myspace.
When I was a kid we used the phone to keep in touch, or wrote letters. Sometimes we'd just open the window and yell to the other kids in the neighborhood. AND WE LIKED IT! -
Dueling in zones is like having sex in the park.
Sure, it's fun and exciting. But don't be mad and surprised if someone catches you with your pants down.

I vote no.
Which of your characters are you offering up? -
Bye. Don't come back now, ya hear?

Room for a farm arc? Why? Just to get gobs of whatever with little to no risk? Play the damn game already. Farming isn't playing, it's City of Veruca Salts crying, "don't care how, I want it NOW!"

Do you think battling large mobs of lts or bosses is no risk?
I do play the game and I have for almost 5 years. I probably play too much. I was excited by the prospect that the MA provided to do something different, something challenging.
But recent events have soured me on MA.
If you disagree, that's fine. Does it threaten you in some way that I post my opinion? -
Impressive. Like Horton, you said what you meant and you meant what you said.
-
I won't say that I didn't set foot in a meow mission, because that would be a lie. But I did find it terribly boring and left.
I did run other missions that contained only bosses or only lts that gave very big rewards, but I was not hovering from safety. I was fighting melee characters in melee and getting great rewards.
Not all my characters can do that, but some of my sturdier ones can. I didn't find it much different than running a Dreck map or the demon map that so many people have used to farm.
I just think they should close the loopholes and not punish people for doing what the MA allowed them to do. If there's some kind of hack or coding invovled, then yes, punish them.
You state that the MA should be for "players to show off their creativity and storytelling skills." Fine, I agree with that. But I don't agree that that is the only thing that can be or should be done with it. I don't mind the ocassional vanity arc, or challenge arc, or farm arc. I think there is room for all of it.
But hey, it's the Devs game and they can decide what they want it to be. If they think it should only be for story telling and creativity then they did a terrible job putting out what they did.
