And sheesh, pretty soon I'll need a DVR for the forums so I can skip the ads
There are other ways to support the arts without simply tossing money at folks. Steve's been very helpful to me in the past and I thought I'd try to drum up a few customers. It was either this or start a serious art discussion thread in a veiled attempt to create windows of opportunity to snark/flame people I don't like in the 606 forums. I figure the former is a bit more friendly and productive.
  2. I'll go. I don't think there's any question as to who my signature character is.

Thanks, and yes it's Sal Velluto. I'm good friends with his favorite inker, and he introduced me to Sal.

  4. Bang, zoom. Right in the kisser!
  5. No problem. He's fun to work with and is very prompt. Very professional so I think he deserves a good plug, especially since he's done so much great stuff regarding my own requests.

...and he's done already. He said it'll be posted today. That is a turn around time with Acme rocket rollerskates. I told him you referred me.
Just saw it. Gotta say, it looks pretty bad-@$$. I hope you get it colored! That's make for an awesome avatar for yourself.
  6. I think for the duration of the FArt competition, the rules should stay the same: once you're eliminated from the FArt competition, you should be out for the duration of the contest. As far as I can tell, the people who were removed from the competition (aside from Bindweed) are people who quit of their own volition.

Moving forward for other FArt competitions, my suggestions would be to hold two per year. January through May; July through November. A shorter run might allow people to fit them into their schedules better. It's less of a commitment, plus there are built in breaks. Plus if a new artist joins the forums and wants to participate, they dont' have to wait til next year to join.

I'd also suggest that there are no eliminations in either FArt event and have a point system installed similar to Nascar; voting occurs for the top 5 pieces of the month. Every participants' votes are added and final rankings for the month are determined. Then the participants are awarded points for their ranking. Whoever accumulates the most points by the end of month five, wins.
  7. Updated layout to the two-page splash/throwdown in the works.

I met up with the artist at Boston Comic Con. Hilarious guy as is his other artist friend. Definitely going to have to meet up at another con down the line. Bayani, Clockwork Cadaver, and the background's all set for the most part. the artist, Shaun, did an thumbnail overlay to sort out where the rest of the other heroes and villains will be in the piece.

  9. Steven Sanchez has re-opened his sketchshot commissions with a limited time offer. Check out his journal for more details!

He also has a few copies of his 2008 sketchbook, packed with 200 pages of his awesome art left for sale. I picked up a copy of the book a year ago and it's a pretty cool addition to the collection.
  10. Thanks. =) I thought it'd be fun to do a few "crossing worlds" type pieces, so I started off with my two favorite superheroines from the Big 2.
  11. I think VexXxa's running a Numina TF Friday night at around 8pm et. Maybe if the Costume party was pushed to Saturday or Sunday? Or even one day earlier, Thursday. Since it's split into two TFs it'd be hella shorter and easier to tackle.

I've approached her a few times about color commissions through dA and she declined all of them. Did someone refer you to her?

I still think a three point stance (his left hand resting on the Skiff) would be more stable, even more so now that he is returning fire, and considering the speed you want to depict (i.e. when things are going really really fast you grab onto whatever you can and hold on tight). Also and if is chi blasts have an equal and opposite reaction effect on him in his current pose I think he might topple... other than looking cool what purpose does having his left arm up in the air serve?

CR, while your points may be valid concerns if we were talking about a normal man, we're dealing with Bayani. He's a character in a fictional story. While your ideas would make the picture more realistic (as realistic as an illustration of a fire manipulating martial artist battling futuristic space soldiers across a cityscape can get), I think it would make for a less dynamic picture and story. All of the rules that apply to you and me don't necessarily have to apply to a superhero. I don't think a two point stance here takes anything away from the illustration.

I was very impressed with Red Valkyrja's commission from BAKArt and had to see for myself if he was for real. I decided to give him a shot at coloring the She-Hulk/Bayani piece "Contempt of Courtship" to color, which was penciled by Yvel Guichet and inked by Joe Rubinstein.

So uh, to say he passed was an understatement. I'm very pleased with the results and look forward to seeing him tackle a few other pieces in the future.

I'm impressed that you got Nei Ruffino to color that last piece.
  15. Maybe he means that he likes seeing art from people who've never had their art posted around these parts before? Irregardless, thanks. =)

    Updated Revision:
So, I decided I wasn't completely thrilled with the way things ended up, meaning I should've paid closer attention during the thumbnails section. I ended up having to go back a few steps and get a major revision in order avoid Bayani's not-so-cool expression and still relatively passive pose in the above pencils.

    Proposal Revision:
So while I like the idea of Bayani deflecting incoming bullets, I liked the idea of him projecting a retaliatory fiery blast of chi more. The dynamic pose is maintained, and now the interaction between the parties goes both ways, with the added pop of a Sky Raider taking a Bayani Ha-Do-Ken to the face.

    Ooo, Dr. Who reference.
  18. Hm. I think that'll get my vote this month.

They're not super-involved but they are the standard for concept art. Usually a three point turnaround, and maybe a front and side bust shot and voila, done. Any complicated details can be pointed out or highlighted, but a picture's worth a thousand words. As McKinney said after he finished mine and Planet Girl's a few years ago... "If the artist still get the details wrong with the model sheets as references they're either lazy or dumb."

I had mine done a few years ago and it's been a small investment that's saved me alot of cash, time, and headaches. Brandon McKinney did mine and Planet Girl's. I believe Comrade Hero got his done by Graver.
  20. Was it the Graingnome piece? I saw that posted on his page; he does take alot of liberties with character designs. He did it to Planet Girl and Terratonic, if I remember correctly.
  21. I'd say Fenian came out looking Amazonian, not butch per say. Very Wonder-Woman in terms of physique. The linework in that piece looks nice, but the composition could be better. The dude in the foreground has a strong reaction, as if he's ready to punch something, but the other characters don't really have any reaction or emotion. As a result, the characters don't look like they're in the same picture; it feels more like each character and the background were drawn separately and then layered in photoshop.
  22. Hehe. Well, Bayani does have impervium armor weaved into his outfit and can use his internal energy to form a Fire Shield around him, so it's not like he'd be too worried about surviving shots. I think plummeting out of the sky is the more imminent danger so staying balanced would be the best course of action. He could've reasoned that it's unlikely that at their speeds, the Sky Raiders could be super super accurate, and he doesn't have a lot of space to dodge and maneuver. I think some dialogue would add to the piece; there's some room on the right for word balloons. I'm still pondering possible exchanges there.

THe picture is suppose to accompany a story that Mae-Day's player and I have been working on to detail how they met. One of Bayani's weaknesses is that he can't drive. At all. (Even flunked the driver's test 7 times). Bayani can't really chase after Sky Raiders using a grappling hook so when Mae-Day shows up with a "borrowed" Sky Skiff...well...hi-jinks ensue.
  23. I'd say keep it simple. Cleavage secondary would be three powers. Tier's 1-7 would be upgrades, that manipulated mob reaction from "Double-Take" to "Complete Focused Attention". An increasing To-Hit Debuff and Recharge Slow. Tier 8 could be AoE Disorient and Tier 9 would auto-defeat every mob in the room. Mob animations would be Looney-Tune-ish...telescopic eyes, jaw dropping to the floor and tongue rolling out on the ground like a carpet, accompanied by a "awooooooga" sound.
