  1. Oh whoops. One more update.

    Enter: The Bayani

Linework and inkwash by Mike Lilly. The colors were done by Tom Ziuko.

    Happy Juggy Day!

Too bad that guy with the really awesome movie trailer voice passed away. I could hear him doing it.

"Coming in August. He's big. He's barbaric. And he's HUNGRY. No birthday party is safe when JUGGERTHA is here."
  3. Yo hablo un poco de espanol tambien.

    New Commissions

Pssh. Tantrum's a Yankees fan? Bleh.

Nice work. Though with a name like "Futalia" I don't want to know what she's packing. >.>
  5. Alright, I'm just going to start tossing all the new updates here. The colored commissions I've gotten are starting to trickle in...I was planning on purchasing a laptop and having it custom-painted with a Bayani design on the front, so I had this piece commissioned. Instead though, I ended up getting a laptop from work and so it ended up just being a wallpaper.

Sorah also just finished coloring a lastscionz sketch for Planet Girl.

    Psst!

There are some pretty kick-butt artists who do amazing color originals. Nakayama's sketches for instance are really sweet. Charlie Vess does some crazy good stuff with colored pencils too.
  7. Heya, Firethorn. I suggest contacting some of the other artists privately and getting their feedback about where to price stuff. =) Pricing/commissions is sorta the elephant in the room around here so it might be wiser to hold these sorts of discussions over at dA. Artists and collectors alike are there.
  8. Ok, I know you're upset Sassy and I know Jomaro's not completely thrilled at having to air out this much "dirty laundry". In the interest of keeping things civil here could both parties take this to a more private venue? I'd rather not see the mods step in and get involved.

lol. You're slipping. You weren't the first to respond.
  10. Yeah I use to do that too, Soul but the thing was those other details frequently got lost or omitted. Bayani's shades use to actually have a red to yellow gradient tint to them, but after the first 5 colorists made his shades completely yellow, I switched to that. Then folks started giving him a full jacket instead of the sleeveless vest. Then they started tucking his sleeves into the gloves and making Bayani more ripped than I liked. Then people started coloring Bayani as a white guy and well, I had to draw a line some where.
  11. Well an artist-drawn model sheet isn't suppose to be heavily rendered or precise. Whoever does the model sheet sketches and outlines the important details, knowing that future artists will be using creative liberties and interpreting the model sheet itself in their own styles. I commissioned a model sheet because albout half the artists I've worked with misinterpret details in screenshots or forget to look at the notes I attached; the artist-drawn model sheet just points out the details that an artist might miss in a screenshot: in Bayani's case, the sun emblem should be the sun on the Filipino flag and Bayani's complexion should be somewhat dark. Anyways it's another idea to consider investing in as it can make commissions easier for both parties involved. Less revisions to be done if the piece isn't just right etc.
  12. Hey folks. Just an update with regards to the little "Volunteer to be in a Bayani" commission contest. I know it's not the end of December but the thread fell off the front and I didn't want to bump it.

I decided to end it early because after discussing possible layouts with a bunch of different pros, it would be very tough to both showcase the villains and throw in epic Steranko/Kirby/Kane like action. I didn't want the piece to be just a bunch of people holding poses...personally we could just tape all our pinups together to do that. I didn't want to have villains with their backs turned or somersaulting after being struck by Bayani etc.

Instead, moving forward, I'm going to try to do a series of commissions with at least 1-2 other player characters involved...heroes or villains... that I could see being in a story arc of a Bayani monthly title (if there were ever to be such a thing). Anyways, I did promise I'd get something with Juggertha done first so he's up in my queue and have a wicked good artist lined up for it. I contacted the players who's characters I'm planning on incorporating in future commissions already. If anyone else is still interested feel free to toss me a private message and we'll talk. Same criteria as the contest do apply...I'm looking for characters with great costume designs (not too simple, not overly accessorized) that tie into a well thought-out background history. In the mean time, keep posting your characters around here, everyone. I'm always "scouting".
  13. I see what you did there. *swats Brandi for groan-inducing puns*
  14. A tradesman is a professional with a high degree of practical and theoretical knowledge in his/her specialty. An artist is a tradesman, regardless of the quality of his/her work. Overwhelmed, undermotivated and in a bind...every professional is going to have to deal with challenges regardless of the industry they're in. No offense, but your argument makes it sound like jomaro should get a free pass because his job title is artist. With all due respect to you and other artists, I don't believe that should be the case. But clearly something isn't going right and those issues should be addressed in a fair manner, especially if the clients involved also consider him a friend.

It is very difficult for an artist to constantly be motivated, even when hey are at the top of their game. It is very LONELY work, and while he may have a partner in life, that partner is not "doing" the art along side him. In a perfect world, the artist will continually put out work and never change, never burn out, never want to do work other than what the fans or excuse me clients demand.

I can't speculate on Jomaro, but I can understand that if he's behind, the end doesn't get any closer, no matter how much you want it to... the art has to be done, plain and simple, and that will sometimes sit in limbo for a variety of reasons. My main work stop is my wife, I cannot function if there is something wrong between us... thankfully that is few and far between. Regardless of the reason, motivation is something that can't be turned on at the flip of a switch...

I wish him luck with the monumental task he is undertaking, and to all of the clients, I empathize with your frustration. I have days where I wish my queue would disappear, but "this is the business we have chosen", so I try to re-motivate myself, and hope the guilt will somehow get less and less with each pencil stroke... okay back to work!

No offense, but that kind of self-indulgent dilly-dallying has no place in the professional world. Making someone wait 3 years for work that was paid for is irresponsible. In some states it's criminal. Any of my employees who tried to pull that would be fired without references. Once you take on work for hire, you're no longer an "artiste" but a tradesman -- get the job done or else.

If the wait is too long for your clients (and I would suggest that anything past a couple months is far too long a wait), you do what any responsible, professional adult would do: you stop taking orders until you're caught up and you bust your hump until you *are* caught up. And you deal on a first-come, first-served basis. Just because Client B is willing to pay twice what Client A will shouldn't give them the right to jump the line.

If it takes you 6 weeks to do a piece on average, then communicate that, and don't overextend yourself to the point where people are waiting for you a year later.

That's just common sense and ordinary respect.

Ironik's response might be a little cold, but I have to agree. Business is business. While I sympathize with Jomaro's extenuating circumstances, he was paid for the work he was suppose to do. Motivation shouldn't be relevant here. People with non-creative careers also suffer downs where their motivation is pretty low but many still punch in on the time clock and somehow find a way to get their work done whether it's teaching a class, building a house, balancing a 58 million dollar portfolio, or treating patients.

I really don't like the idea of rewarding the people of the Forum Games section of the forums lol

Yeah. At least keep it to nominating Art Forums folk.
  20. Yeah, I don't think he gets enough credit really for that sort of thing. Pinups are nice and all but what's really bad-[censored] is being able to tell a smooth flowing story with sequential art. He worked really well with the 8 page Bayani story and I'm pretty pleased with the way it came out.
  21. Heh, storyboards is far more prestigious. He's telling the animation grunts to follow his vision.

Brandon should be in animation. Everytime I see his art it's like seeing a frame from a cartoon!

He has been...he did storyboards for Batman Beyond, Static Shock, JLA, JLU, Batman, Teen Titans and pretty much every other DC property. You can see them on his website.
