Hola neighborinos. Awhile ago, I asked for villanous volunteers for a series of Bayani-related commissions called (aptly) the Rogues' Gallery. Thank you everyone who volunteered. There were lots of great concepts and characters to choose from and ultimately decided on four characters: Midnight Trader (Eddy Swan), Kim Paler (Firebrandi), Blackthorn (Thornster), and Massacre Melanie (Suichiro).
I've determined the next series I wanted to pursue, however, I have one commission in mind that I'm hoping to kick off soon, which will serve to close out the Rogues' Gallery and segway into the project called "The Highlight Reel". I'm looking for volunteers, either villain or heroic, to use in this piece.
Bayani's personal archenemy is Crey Industries, for reasons stemming from the short story, "Closure". I'm leaning towards using one villain and one hero for this commission. The instructions are the same as other projects I've done in the past. Please provide clear references, a concise but well written background story of the character, and make your case as to why/how the character would be involved (as a friend or a foe) with Bayani and/or Crey Industries, for that matter.
The artist I have in mind for the project is looking to start in two weeks, so I'm hoping to have a final decision on the additional characters over the next 10 days or so. Thanks! -
I guess now is a good time as any to start voting. Lousy Day.

Quote:So let's say we start gathering at 6:45pm PST, then. That's 8:45 central time, and 9:45pm eastern.I don't think I'll be on earlier than 8 Central. Gotta take the family out for dinner tonight and then run my cable. Maybe running it along the walls works in YOUR house, but my wife ain't gonna let that fly
In fact, I can't even promise 8pm but I'll be trying for it. Don't let me stop you all from starting if I'm late.
I mean...It's Friday night...I've got no date. I've got a two-liter bottle of Shasta and my all-Rush mixtape! Let's rock! -
Quote:If Swanzy slapped a Vanguard logo on the character, that could tie in the CoH/CoV theme more closely. At least there wouldn't be any grey area.I don't think that'd fly. It'd have to be something depicted inside the image.
Apologies for the late edit:
I didn't mean to be dismissive of your thoughts if that's how it sounded, so I apologize for my wording there. It just seems your interpretation of the rule is ignoring the spirit of it. There's a difference here between Shia's situation and what you're pointing out.
Wassy posted in the FArt competition announcement thread that it wasn't just signature characters that could be used, so having a drawing of something that looks like it could be a hero/villain is A-OK unless otherwise forbidden by the rules, it would seem. -
Quote:I work until 6, to I'll be no help.
Bayani, you said the 'h' word.
And it shouldn't matter what server you play on, transfer to test, that way everyone can play with their favourite charater.
Well, my character is a Filipino medicine man (empath) who does heal...dunno what to tell you. =P
Well we did form an SG on Virtue and transferred characters over to it. So....yeah. -
Quote:Bummer, man. But I'm always down for some TF action so if you're on at some point this weekend, I'll be game to thrown down a task force with ya.
I've still never done Eresto Hess and never finished a Statesman (we couldn't defeat Recluse). And never done any of the Shadow Shard TFs (clear your calendars!).
Hess is a pretty quick TF. could squeeze that in before the Reichsman TF. -

*uncomfortable laughter* Not that uh...she's done that. Right? (don't shoot me plz) -
It's the Filipino Sun, yes. Each ray of the sun represents one of the 8 provinces that declared rebellion against Spanish occupation.

Quote:Amen to that. Ended up using 100 ft of cable to connect the XBox 360. to the web. Thankfully, no one ever comments about the random cables zig-zagging up and down the walls. However, last night I got sick of it and ordered 100 ft of CAT5e cable and informed my wife that I shall be poking a couple holes in the walls and running it through the attic. Hopefully a wired connection will solve my woes and, anyway, $16 worth of cable and an hour of my time is a cheaper solution than buying and trying more wireless adapters.

Sorry, didn't have time to clarify my statements...I'm knee-deep in a revenue analysis project. What I meant was the thread's gotten a bit off-topic and the crux of the discussion has for the most part been explored (and summarized by the "i respect what you do, I like my own way" statements). And while I wouldn't mind exploring the subject further, I haven't got the time for it really and the general tone of these forums being what they are, it'd probably be wiser to just let it go. *shrugs*
*trudges back to Microsoft Excel* -
There are comparable elements across different galleries, though that's a discussion which probably would be best left unexplored. This thread's getting pretty long in the tooth as is, especially because the general view is that folks just don't care about those elements...*shrugs* It's easier in my pursuits to set a target and go for it. I'm aware that other people don't share that sentiment and that's fine. =) I still don't think it hurts to have some discussion over the matter.
Quote:The comic was more or less a one time thing, just to see if I would be able to put together a bigger project and execute it properly. (It worked more or less...I learned alot about the process). The direction of illustrating Bayani's adventures has been my primary focus for the better part of a year now, the Rogues' Gallery being the start to it with Massacre Melanie, Blackthorn, Kim Paler, and Midnight Trader showdowns. There's also the poster commissioned for the Story Arc I published in AE. I still continue to get pin-ups and such to accomplish a few things...showcase/shout-out to other players who I've come across in RP and "test" a few artists I'm less familiar with. And as a final note... Through these discussions, through reading the comic you had made, and through various other things... I am now considering aiming at least part of my future commissions towards telling a story. I don't think I'll go the comic book route per se, I'm thinking more along the lines of writing a story and the commissions being the illustrations for it... But just goes to show that discussions and other people galleries and such can influence other people and give them ideas... -
Quote:I think competition, debates, and critiques are healthy, leading to new ideas and ultimately more impressive art. It's a ultimately a win/win for artists and collectors, bruised egos aside. I feel there could be a better balance of all those things along with praise, but from what I've seen over the past few years, folks have been avoiding everything aside from praise out of fear of starting a flame war.Sometimes, we've just gotta' stop the jabbing, and focus more on the enjoying.
To me, it is partly a competition, because when the artists I've been following for a long time open up small commission windows, it's the other collectors I'm jockeying for a spot in line against. Which can be a bit fun, minor aggravations aside. I feel that by making my collection and approach look more polished is what opens the door with artists who are closed for commissions or have full lists. I'd say a third of my collection is from artists who made exceptions because of the way I conduct my process. If others don't feel it's a competition...well that's ok. I'm still going to strive to build the better collection, because I do still think about transitioning into the field of illustration in some manner some day. I do respect the other collectors here as the quality stuff gathered on their ends pushes me to improve my knowledge and find more art. And while yes, there's no one way to build a gallery (and to each their own), I personally believe that some ways yield more positive results than others and the galleries that speak for themselves.
*edit*
I disagree with the idea of being competitive over it being nonsense. The gallery considered as a whole, can say alot about the collector's history, efforts and knowledge about art. It can also play an important part in selling the character(s), emphasizing certain elements of a particular character (or collector) to make them ultimately more compelling or appealing. -

re: Quality over Quality & elitist art snobbery
Well, one of my personal goals when I started commissioning original comic book related art is to build what I would consider the best collection around. It might very well end up being a race of one, I'm not sure how many other people are competitive about it. I consider a very strong collection/gallery to be one that's looks professional, well-organized, and ties together a range of different techniques & themes in an aesthetically pleasing manner.
There are a number of different things I've done in an effort to achieve those ends...model sheets, networking, writing/finetuning backgrounds and stories, visiting museums, taking classes on art just to name a few. Senor Robin pretty much hit the reasons why I do what I can to discourage gift art. I prioritize quality because over time I know that if I continue to do what I do, I'll end up with a quantity of quality. Quantity came over time through patience. If that rubs people the wrong way, oh well. While I don't have the most gallery views or the largest collection of art, I feel that the collection on my dA account is arguably the best around.
Some may say that this approach isn't terribly supportive of artists. *shrugs* I personally think that you can support and encourage amateur artists through means other than simply buying their work. -
Quote:I make no apologies for my quality > quantity approach.
Lol not by anything I've said yet... *rescans his posts* nah just pointed out a small flaw in the pic and that you and Bayani have different way of building your gallery in that you support any attempt to draw TA and Bayani is more of an elitist art snob...

Quote:Brilliant! Poor Bayani! I hope he can remember what's in all those pouches. Only bad thing though is his head is unprotected, he should consider getting one of those boxing trainer helmets.
/e nods vigorously. :P
Honestly though really nice drawrings! And nothing much, I'm off being a Gray Warden recently and doing terribly at it.
Dragon Age I take it then? Neet. =) -
Hiya, Rook and VexXxa!
*swings Rook up onto his shoulder*
What's new? Just got a neat new pic done. Bayani, as imagined by Thor's Assassin and Rob Liefeld! *creeeepy*

Keep up the awesome work. =)
