Thanks Carnifax
I like the steampunk idea, it really fits. Mind control appeals but Grav does draw me.

Do temp inv and resp phys dam work at the same time? If so it's a strong defence, agreed?
Thanks

Where do you get the percentage figure for the effectiveness of powers?
Thanks

Thanks
I started the thread because i spent a lot of time playing Champions, D&D and other games from the age of about 14 to 19, then beer etc took over. Ever since then I've wanted to recapture the experience but life being what it is the opportunities and contacts aren't there. The solution seemed to be in the direction of the pc so I played Baldur's Gate, Freedom Force and other similar titles. Obviously, there's nobody there to interact with so fun was limited.
When I first played coh I loved it for the world and charcater generation but this was limited. i quickly realised I was still playing a single player game really so I got involved in teams. I've had a lot of fun doing this but I'm still not in my rpg world and that's something I miss. I can even remember now, in my late 30's, a Champions character called Primus(I know all the jokes, forgive me I was young)who died shielding a civilian with his body when a bomb went off. I wasn't even sad when he died; it's what he was there to do. Now to some that might sound stupid but to me it's what roleplaying is all about. i want some of that from Coh and happily, there seems to be a fair few people willing to help me achieve it.

This all sounds very promising to me, good luck. Hopefully I'll be part of it soon.

thanks for replying, it's the longest I've had to wait on this busy forum. More to the point, thanks for explaining your technique. Considering I'm interested in the rp aspect of the game I should write a background first. I write a serialised story over at The Metahuman Press, it's about a Brit superhero group called The Militia. Sorry about the advertising but i thought you might be interested.
Doctor Universe, my controller is a grav/rad controller(I made a mistake when i said emp)as i was trying to create a believable power set. Thanks for sharing your ideas though, I'll do the same.

I like the idea of the mace but I'm not keen on the model.
Generalissimo_2 I'm surprised to see that you soloed for 75 percent of the time. I soloed a lot when i first played the game but try to avoid it now. Is your approach common?
Doc -
Extragonk
I think I'll plan it ver loosely in reference to your advice. I'm not into the long term high level idea yet.

I like Dull Pain, my lev 7 has it. I've seen people use it before a difficult battle but I like to keep it as my safety net: healing's not enough or not there, and I haven't any insps to help. Even in my limited experience it's saved me a hospital visit several times. I know I wouldn't get debt but it's the principle.
Thanks

Thanks ExtraGonk--great avatar by the way.

Thanks but I'm sticking to coh for now, if I was playing a villain aswell time would be a real problem.
This sounds like a sound approach to me Lotus:

Just in case anyone is wondering, by the last 2 % I just meant that I e.g. would have no trouble (without OOC-brackets) going "AFK 30 secs" during a mission or doing Frostfire twice with the same character and things like that, whereas things like complaining about XP would be out of the question

After being advised to change from Defiant to Union in order to get more role play opportunities I'm considering reinventing my controller. He's only lev 8 so it's no big deal and this time I thought I'd see if anyone would be good enough to give me some specific build advice.
I like gravity as my first power as it seems to be the best for control. Agreed?
I have Empathy for my secondary because the healing is useful for me; it's good for teaming, and I'm only reallly interested in the healing to start with so I can really concentrate on my grav powers. What do you think of this way of looking at it? Should I look at a different secondary?
Thanks

After being advised to change from Defiant to Union in order to get more role play opportunities I'm considering reinventing my tank. He's only lev 7 so it's no big deal and this time I thought I'd see if anyone would be good enough to give me some specific build advice.
My character's Inv and super str.

Thanks all
It looks as though I'm going to be fighting crime in Union now. The down side is that I'll be starting my characters from scratch again; I've been trying to get out of the habit of creating, creating, creating. The plus side; however, is that hopefully I'll get more attatched to my character if he interacts in role.
Now I just have to decide if I want to recreate Doc Universe(controller) and Battleflag(Tank). If I do I can make them better with help from the advisers in the forum. All in all, not a bad deal.
Thanks

It looks as though I should take the time to read instead of just charge around. Thanks for the info.

I've just noticed your posting; it sounds like you have the right idea too. It loooks like a brilliant team option is emerging.

thanks for sharing the suffering, it makes me feel better. By the way, is Union more RP than Defiant?
Coile
I think your team and it's approach sounds excellent. I especially think the slow growth idea is important, as is limiting the numbers. Your efforts can only improve the game in my opinion.
I would love the opportunity to play alongside your team but my two main characters are on Defiant and I'd have to start again(not that either is past lev 10). I have no problem with that and if Union is more of an rp experience I'm sure I will.
In the meantime, the very best of luck! It's good to know there are like minds out there.

I made an effort to roleplay last night. All I did was suggest that we get to the next mission quick before the Clockwork had time to complete their plans. I was told this wasn't a timed mission. I then replied that I was trying to rp. This was greeted with: Union's that way!
Maybe I should have just stayed in character and ignored the criticism, I don't know. To be honest I felt a bit of an idiot. I haven't given up on the idea but rp players seem to be in the minority. All things considered, it's pretty strange that anyone who really likes the superhero thing and playing a character isn't prepared to give rp a go.

Yep, tamking's much more my thing. My character's level 7 now and I'm looking forward to seeing how he develops. When I was scrapping I wasn't too interested. It's strange really because I'm less actively involved in the action but I like the sensation that I'm supporting the team. It's the same reason I like being a controller but in a very different way.
Doc -
Thanks for all of the great responses everyone. I posted on Friday and over the weekend I created a broadsword regen scrapper. I enjoyed playing him up until lev 6--it looks as though the AT isn't for me at the moment. Your posts have made very interesting reading though and it's all helped.
The plus side is that I've realised I like the toughness of scrappers more than the attacks so now I'm giving Tankers a serious try.
As a new member I would like to say how impressed I am with the community overall. You're a good bunch!
Thanks

I'm a bit puzzled as to how this works in gameplay. Can you actually configure the mechanics of the game as a modder would to create a custom mission?
If not, would you for example just put a different story to the Frostie mission and call him something else etc?
Doc -
Thanks Maximillion
Just the kind of info I was looking for.

I've recently created an inv super str tanker(lev 4) and would like any advice people have to offer. Here are some questions I have:
1. I have three slots in resist physical damage because it seems like a solid choice. Am i right and should I add more next time?
2. At the moment I'm concentrating on defenses with a plan to look at boosting my attacks later. Good idea?
2. What should i get when the power pool appears? I usually get concealment to help get around the Hollows.
3. What travel power is advisable for this kind of character? I'm thinking of flight or leaping but would appreciate any comments.
My characer is a tech armour wearer and any choices i make will try to fit in with my concept of the hero. I don't really rp as such but I try.
Thanks

After reading a few posts in this section I get the impression that there's a marked difference between people who play the game and people who roleplay the game. I'm an old pen and paper rpger(D&D, Champions, Traveller, Runequest etc)so I know what roleplaying is, my questions are as follows:
1. Are there known roleplaying players?
2. If that's a yes, how do I join the crowd?
3. What's the basic or not so basic difference in gameplay?
I love the idea of playing the game in role(my characters would mean a lot more to me) but have seen only limited opportunities so far,
Thanks

Well I never knew you could speak to Wincott and return to your old contacts, I'll do that for a change.
I've always liked the spines idea but the animation doesn't appeal; I would prefer the option of a more metallic/robotic appearence for the attack and it doesn't look like there's an option.
The animation/model has put me off both the gun and claws in the past. I know I'm being picky but when I get an idea for a character I like the actual model to match it pretty closely.
Thanks for the help
Doc -
Well that's it, I'm going home to crack a can open and start scrapping; a great start to the weekend.
As for Steel Canyon and Kings Row I've been to them both but I've had limited experience of missions there. I didn't think The Hollows was avoidable. Is it?
