I am intrigued based on the story reason about how the Rikti broke through the barrier.

Well, I was sure that Inobtanium was a reference to something, what I wasn't sure of was what, if anything, its two components were in reference to, other than a fun play on words.

Though not an "inside" joke or a reference to anything in particular, as far as I know, I did get a chuckle out of the Scanner mission which has you going after Inobtanium. The joke about that name has been widely reported. But I really laughed at the alloys that made up Inobtanium: Nonsuchium and Yeahrightium.
