I'd be willing to wager that every character on Lost was either different than envisioned or not even on their radars when the creative team came up with the idea.

Who else could have played people like Locke, or Ben, or Desmond, or even Hurley?

I also hope more shows in the future follow Lost's lead of not having to answer every question posed within a given season, or within a few episodes. It's ok to answer questions with more questions, and to throw the audience for loops every so often.
I really liked reading this coffee table book about Lost that, I guess, was published after the first season and it went over the changes in characters that occurred once they cast:

    Jack lived.
Locke was supposed to be thw Hurley character in that he owned a major corporation/
Charlie went from being an older, washed-up rocker to younger.
Kate went from being a housewife to a criminal.
Sawyer went from being a slick New York conman to a Southern faker.
  2. The Simpsons get in on the Lost mania. Bart's chalkboard gag:

According to Adam Horowitz, writer and exec producer on Lost, the last time a finale aired on May 23rd, it was "Through the Looking Glass!"
  5. I am getting a kick out of how all these different websites and print media are writing about Lost, its impact, fav moments, etc.

For a show whose mainstream popularity dimmed after S2, it is undeniably a part of pop culture now.

Of course... if Jack became Smokey, then he could be an even better protector for the Island than Jacob was.
Here's something to ponder: Jack, and by extension, Lost, has always preached "Live Together, Die Alone." Will Jackob ask other people to help him guard the Island?

  8. This is it, folks! This is “The End!” Both in the sense of that is the episode title and the end of the series known as Lost! Starting at 9 PM EST tonight (with a 2 hour retrospective before hand, and later, a one hour reunion show), and lasting for two and half hours, we will see what finally becomes of Jack Shephard, Kate Austin, James “Sawyer” Ford, Hugo “Hurley” Reyes, John Locke, Miles Straume, Desmond David Hume, and Benjamin Linus. And that’s just the main cast that’s on the Island! Will we see the final sideways fates of Sun, Jin, Sayid, and people we only briefly glimpsed: Boone, Charlie, Charlotte, Daniel? And where the heck is Juliet and who is she getting coffee with?

And what of that title? On the surface, it seems simplistic, as it is the end of Lost. But hark back to this time last year, when the Season 5 finale aired. What did Jacob say to the Man in Black? It only ends once. Everything else is progress. Will we see lots of progress in this episode? Will Jack survive till the very end or will he die in the irony of irony, since his character was supposed to die in the original script of the pilot? Or will Smokey be defeated? Is his victory what leads to the sideways universe? What is your bet for final scene of Lost? I place even odds on Jack and Locke, on the beach, having a similar conversation as Jacob and MiB did on the beach.

Of course, what I pictured as the ending scene of Lost changed with each season. After Season 2, I was sure it was going to be them being rescued. At the end of Season 3, I was sure it was going to be them returning to the Island and witnessing another plane crash, and having our Losties become the “Others.” At the end of Season 4, I thought it might be Oceanic 815 flying over the Island, the Losties fixing their timeline. And at the end of Season 5, I thought of the Locke/Jack parallel. Some of my guesses actually got incorporated into the narrative leading up to the finale. Some of them were way off (Though, come on, Losties becoming “Others” would have been cool. RIGHT?)

I want to thank everyone who has participated in these threads over the years. Some posters have come, some have left. Some have played “Bad Cop” (Det. Ford?) to my “Good Cop” (Det. Straume?) in discussing Lost. But, overall, I think these threads have been enlightening and fun. With Heroes we had fun gently mocking it. With Lost we had fun deconstructing it. Let’s not let Lost become like Fight Club. Let us talk about Lost even when it is done. And let us welcome those who join the party late and watch it on DVD and come here to share their opinions in the summer months and years to come.

Finally, I ask you not to spoil anything before the show airs on the East Coast, even if it only a sentence of a summary of a scene. A lot of info is going to break today, or at least, that is the fear of Damon Lindelof. So this is a personal preference of mine. I am in Lockdown mode and I do not wish for the black light of the Hatch to come on and illuminate a hatch map before I am prepared. As Damon said in his Twitter: Let us EXPERIENCE this episode.

So let’s discuss your final thoughts leading up to the finale. Let me hear it all. The highs and lows of watching Lost. How has Lost affected your “real life?” I have purchased Lost action figures, the Dharma jumpsuit, become somewhat of an oracle of Lost info and theories amongst my friends and relatives. I have been nearly (jokingly) thrown off a plane for referencing Lost and indicating I would know what to in case of a crash. Lost will forever be a reference point in my life, something I have used to bond with people and yes, even expand my knowledge (Lost Book Club, I am looking at you!)

Well, I am rambling, but let me close with the final line of the pilot. Spoken by Charlie Pace, bassist of Driveshaft, it sums up the series perfectly and this discussion: “Guys, where are we?”
  9. Grunberg has been cast for another show next season, so that's why he isn't too sad
  10. Adrian Pasdar busted for DUI:

He was promptly written off of Lost.

He then takes the name Ben Riley and sets out to take back the Spiderman mantle from the apparent phony. The idea was to make neither one a clone, but both of them Peter, just as part of a time loop.
Coincidentally, this is how Lost will end.

  14. Didn't Austen introduce the "evolved from wolves" thing into X-Men?

(Un)fortunately, I got back into comics and the X-Men during Austen's run, so I don't mind some of the things he did.

He can time travel, except it now it hurts him...

    SPOILERS FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON

The plot for next season has Hiro dying from some terminal disease (maybe related to his traveling) and writing a Bucket List where he goes back in time to correct his mistakes.
  17. Well, they established in S1 that Hiro can't save her, so he probably goes to her for advice or stalkerish activities.

BBM did you see last night's yet? I thought it was great, and 2 of my predictions true so far, Tracy and Daphne. You can totally tell Fuller is writing again.

I did. I thought it was great too. I will comment more on the main thread. Little miffed that they brought back Daphne just to kill her again, but I guess it was worth the emotional heft. Tracy is definitely coming back, wink and all.
