Quote:When you say it almost fit, did it not physically fit, period, or did it just make contact with the fan shroud while still inserting properly? If it just contacts the shroud but otherwise fits, you might actually be ok. If the contact is fairly trivial, allows the card to insert and doesn't much impact the airflow of the card or CPU, you're actually fine. If you still have the card, and it will plug in and all, get us a pic of that. I'd like to see it.The saga continues... I got a smaller video card: a single slot with a decent heatsink: the HIS HD5770 from a local supplier only to find that the tail edge of the heatsink hit the fan assembly by 15mm or so. It only just contacted it too. It almost fit!
I was so annoyed.
Thank fully I'm getting a store credit.
There are more pictures and further measurements of my computer internals here.
The tech support identified the case as a BTX case and suggested a 5670 card.
Here's the dreaded $64 question. Will it run CoX/UM? Or should I switch to nVidia card or just forget it as a joke and sell the blasted system? -
Quote:Well I wouldn't say I necessarily recommend using such a service but if the data was that important and you foolishly had no backups, well... So I mention for completeness if nothing else.Yeah, they overcharge for not doing much. Data Recovery Places will nevar get my moneis!!!
Seriously, though, due to their (IMO) retardedly high costs, I never consider a data recovery place as an option.
Ah well. The HDD is dead. Time to start scouting out a replacement, for when we can afford it. Only problem is that it's an EIDE and not SATA system...
Here's hoping nothing else goes kaput and GL with the replacement shopping.
And while I have no idea how good they are, there are such things as add-in SATA cards if such would be of interest. Probably still better or at least cheaper to get IDE but it's an option. -
Yup. Check your version. Check your fans to make sure heat isn't it. You could also try running the game in Safe Mode. (Not the windows kind). When the updater comes up to the EULA, look for the Safe Mode checkbox. That forces the game to run at minimum graphics settings. If you can't run that, you've got a big issue. Does the system otherwise boot and run fine? Desktop look ok and all that?
-
If the drive motor is shot or any of the other mechanical bits are dead, no. Only way to get anything from it then is to take it to a professional drive recovery place. And that's not generally cheap. They'll basically take the unit apart in a clean room and pull the data directly from the platters. Hence the $$$. Hope you have backups!
-
There any info on when they plan to have a full driver out? I may go ahead and pull the preview but I'm curious to know.
-
Odd, I can have Firefox maxed and not have that problem as you do. But I also have two monitors so if FF is up, I tend to have it on the second screen so I can see it.
-
well I'd consider it unusual but yes I do believe that the HDD could be at fault depending on just what is wrong with it. I have seen issues like that before. So you could try your suggestion and see if it comes up. You don't even *have* to have a drive if you want to see if it will just POST. Just plug it up and go. If it does more than it did before, like POST, then you know you're on the right track. As for going back in time to shoot the inventor of the computer, you'll probably need a computer to compute the time jump...
-
One other thing to try is this, unplug the system and then press and hold the power button for 10-15 sec. Then plug it back in and see what happens. It's possible the system had a small power surge. Doing that will clear the capacitors and may allow the system to come back on. If that doesn't work, you may have a dead PSU or issues with your power strip/UPS/whatever it's plugged into.

Ever try just clicking the mouse somewhere on the screen? Mine does that some but all I have to do is click, say, on the password box and it comes to the fore and works fine.

Quote:Well it should run CoH fine if that's the question. As for UM, I'd tend to doubt it based on what is publicly known. Mobile chips just aren't as good as their desktop brethren. Even if they do share model numbers. Depending on what the final UM specs shake out to, you *might* get minimum UM but I really couldn't say with certainty. A 280M or 285M is the best Nvidia you can get right now I think and I'd expect they could get minimum to maybe low UM performance. But until the NDA lifts that's the best anyone can tell you.If I was looking around for a laptop specifically (I travel a lot), would an NVIDIA GT200 series (maybe 260x) be ok, paired with 4 or 6gb of ram and Intel dualcore?
Quote:Thanks for your replies - kind of insight I was looking for before getting something that won't work
I'm a little leary of piecing together a rig. The one I've been using was pieced together - and I've simply had frequent problems with it (hard drive crashing, overheating...). If I were to have one pieced together, I'd want someone that was a true professional doing it, and I don't see much of a bargain there.
The model in my OP is going for $450-500. I'll look for options on increasing the specs mentioned, along with other machines as well. If I find something promising, hope I can post here for you guys input again. Thanks again -
Quote:Yeah, I'd definitely not take this as an absolute endorsement (or lack of) concerning whether you can run UM. The CB is still ongoing and the OB is yet to come so changes are entirely possible if not likely. Those with good cards can almost certainly rest easy about doing UM at some level. Those on the edge (whatever that is exactly) may find themselves getting a 'no' today and a 'yes' sometime later as things shake out. (Or vice-versa). So take whatever you may see with a big grain of salt.Would suggest that people try to log into the Test Server. Although you won't be able to actually log in, it seems that CoX auto-detects your graphics card and notifies you if it can use Ultra-Mode and at what setting (at the login screen).
It also seems that this notification will only appear after applying the current version/patch; so I'm assuming that any further changes would have to be done from within the game.
Hopefully, this is WAI.
Finally, this 'detection' may not be the end-all. Just because it says you can doesn't mean that there won't be levels of 'can' and without actually being able to get in and test... -
Quote:Yes, run some monitors and check your temps, fan speeds and the like. I'd also make sure everything is properly seated and such. It might be nothing more than a loose connection you created while poking around in it to do your cleaning. My recent experience is nearly identical to Soul Storm's. Been running CoH on my system for 2 years with nary a glitch, but the last two weeks it's been 'Locking up' during missions. Screen freezes and then nothing works, requiring a power off/on.
I cleaned out my PCs innards last night and it was pretty dusty, but I was thorough. Even so, soon as I logged in and attempted a mission...Lock Up!
And like Soul Storm's, nothing else I run causes any problems...
Could be my card's going bad. I'll try some of the monitor things you guys are suggesting, and hope I don't have to buy a new video card. Swapping one out to test isn't an option. -
Well an unstable CPU can cause issues. So I'd imagine it's at least possible that is the root of your problem. Run it at the lower or even stock speed for a bit and see what happens. As for why it is unstable, the stock cooler being insufficient could be it but also it's possible the BIOS profile used is not quite right for your chip. Overclocking is not an exact science. Tweaking the profile might render it stable at that speed, or it might fry the chip altogether. OC at your own risk.

Quote:So, got a spare room I can crash in while I visit?Yep. Thing for me is I do live on an island (Maui, Hawai'i) that's mostly reliant on tourism (come and visit us!). <snip>
I might be able to scrounge plane fare if I had a place to stay...
"Psyte's Paragon Hotel: The perfect tropical place for the wayward gamer. Ask about our beach LAN parties!"
And now, back to your regularly scheduled thread.... -
My immedite suggestions would be to check your memory and HDD for issues. There might be a problem there with file corruption or something. You could also try a full wipe and reinstall of just the game and see what that does.
Does it do this for any other game or program? -
A new card isn't necessarily the solution. If you want to try and eliminate the card as the issue, I'd suggest seeing if someone you know has a comparable card you can borrow for testing and try using that in CoH and see what happens. That way you don't shell out $$ for a card only to discover it's something else causing the problem.
And you could try rolling back the BIOS as you've considered though I'm not sure that will do anything. I'd try a card swap first though.
Also, I'd tend to guess you can't take the card back to where you got it. But if it is still under warranty from the manufacturer and you can show that the card is faulty, then you may be able to get the maker to do something. -
Quote:Hardly a helpful post, Eislor.Replace mouse this a wired mouse or any brand of wireless mouse except Microsoft, and CoH will be fine again.
To answer the actual question, it is *possible* you have lost the binding. I can't recall if or what normally shows for the camera distance bindings but a check of my keybinds.txt has MOUSEWHEEL "+camdistadjust" as one of the entries so you could try doing a /bind with that and see if it doesn't fix your issue. -
Good to see you seemed to have fixed it. Here's hoping you truly have.
-
Well something that regular would almost have to be a program or something similar. I can tell from your screenshot you have at least iTunes and what I take to be Yahoo chat open. Try running the game all by it's lonesome. Shut off everything extra you can and see what happens.
Further, are there other machines online with you? If there are, perhaps the spikes originate from them somehow. They might be running something that is putting out big bursts of traffic.
Also, check for viruses and such. Perhaps you've got one 'dialing home' and causing your issue.
And finally, try running the Resource Monitor or similar and watch your network activity while the system just sits idle to see if the spikes are truly related to CoX. If it starts having big bursts of activity while doing nothing, you know it's not CoX and is something else. -
Well "IGPs" and "raw power" are rarely if ever used in the same sentence. Unless it's to tell you the first lacks the second.
Keep in mind that IGPs are really never meant for gaming. It's budget video for folks who don't need much because all they do is web surf and use Office. Doesn't take a huge card to do that. -
Quote:Ah, Well you do have a problem then unless you're up for some serious case modding. Yikes. Poor design (or intentional) on the manufacturer's part. Onwards...
Judging by publicly known info, I'd think a 4850 could do UM but at minimum specs while the 5850 ought to be able to hit the max or near to it. So there's that difference. Also, the 4850 is older tech so it doesn't support the newer DirectX and OpenGL specs like the 5850 does. It's DX 10.1/OGL 2.1 while the 5850 is DX 11/OGL 3.2.
As an alternative, you might have a look at this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161317 It's a single-slot 5770 I found in a bit of searching. Not as good as the 5850 but better than the 4850 and it does the DX11/OGL 3.2 specs. I have no experience with HIS brand stuff but this card does have a good rating on NewEgg at least. You'll want to do your homework to see if it will fit but it might be an option for you. -
Well unless the two integrated boards offer you something *overwhelmingly* fantastic compared to the board without, take board #1 and reuse your card. Both of those chipsets are a step down from what you have now.

Quote:Well as I see a mention by you above that it has failed on you at least once while sitting idle, I'm not sure I'd call it fixed just by that. Besides, the PhysX (I think) only really comes into play when there's lots of misc. stuff about from things like exploding objects, Gravity folks using Propel, etc. So while it could certainly affect your gameplay, I tend to question it being the cause of your problem. Too high PhysX would tend to mainly drop your FPS I'd expect, not crash your system.Yeah, I'm not going to be doing that. I don't need my own personal electric aura. ;-)
I've cleaned it out a couple of times, and will probably check the mobo for acne in a couple of days. I'm using cpu-z and gpu-z to keep tabs on the status, too.
While it may be a coincidence, when running for a bit today I noticed something odd. The Particle Physics Quality was set to "Very High (Not recommended without PhysX card)". I certainly don't recall making that change, and since I don't have a PhysX card I can't imagine why I would. At any rate, after changing it to High I played for a couple of hours without a problem, even during a fight with Babbage.
Any thoughts?
Hmm. Yeah I'd tend to think you're right about that. Hadn't occurred to me previously but that does make sense. That likely is it. -
Did some searching on your error and while my search was hardly exhaustive, a common issue I did see was with the audio drivers causing this. In some cases, updating them fixed the issue, in others, they had multiple apparent audio drivers that were conflicting with each other. Disabling the extras seemed to fix the crashes.
In the first case, the common denominator seemed to be with Realtek audio and a search of your mobo indicates it has a Realtek audio chip. This may be your problem.
In the second, it seems at least some ATI cards have some sort of audio driver with them (not quite sure why) and disabling it fixes the conflict. As you have an Nvidia card, this may not be relevant. Not sure if Nvidias have such as well. In any case, you might look for additional audio type devices and try either updating or disabling them as well.
Keep in mind the above only *may* be your issue. It could easily be a HW problem of some sort but those seem to be common solutions that I found in short searching.
Interestingly, I run Win 7 and would technically fall into both categories (Realtek + ATI) but fortunately I'm not having your problem. (And I hope I never do.) Something to check out and see what you find. -
You can also check the Event Viewer (Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Event Viewer). Error messages from past crashes ought to be recorded there as well which might point a bit to what is going on.
