You will be missed! -
Quote:Since many people will be voting for their nominations, I would like you to make two votes for each category. Your first choice, and your second choice.
[[*]Each category vote should contain a first place and second place vote, and please make it clear which arc is your first choice, and which is the runner up.
[*]There's nothing wrong with voting for your own arc, just be sure to add a second vote as well.
First I want to say thank you to Bubbawheat for running this contest. What a great idea! I have found from events I ran at work that pleasing everyone is nearly impossible.
That being said, I strongly feel that based on the contents of his initial post quoted above people do need to vote for a 1st and a 2nd. I don't think it is fair based on the above to count votes in a category from a voter who voted for only 1st or only 2nd.
As an aside, being allowed to vote for yourself poses an interesting and difficult choice. People are very concerned with perceptions of others and yet most want to win. This is a personal choice and assumptions shouldn't me made about the people who made it based purely on this choice. -
Quote:I am also curious about the process, but first I have a specific comment about your arc. Two of the arcs that won were arcs that had an emotional impact on me. CoW did as well, and in my opinion if the contest judges played both parts 1 and 2, CoW might have made the finals, as it impacted me as much as the 2 winners. Commenting just on the first Cow, for me it was very well written and most definately 5 stars, but without part 2, judges would be missing an important part of what you created. That said, am I the only person that submitted an arc that's really curious about what went on behind the scenes? For instance, there were several technical aspects to the submissions -- making certain certain files were submitted, for example. Were arcs immediately rejected because a file was missed, or files weren't sent in directories? Were close contests won simply because the images a person submitted were bigger or crisper than others? What was the elimination process for arcs that weren't rejected on technicalities, and what was the voting process.
As to the process, I wondered how many arcs were submitted and if all were played. This curiousity is what led me down the path of looking at star ratings and number of plays. I had wondered if the judges would use in game ratings and number of plays as a way to narrow down which arcs they played. Obviously, they did not and perhaps this answers another of my questions. I was wondering why we had to submit our arc files instead of simply the ID. Perhaps this was because the judges did not want to be biased by in-game ratings or number of plays?
I am very curious as to whether or not all arcs were played. As another poster pointed out there is a difference between having had your arc played and rejected and having it not been played at all. When the players awards contest is over, I plan to play the arc of the year as that will give me an idea as to what they are looking for. Based on the winning arcs I have played, I suspect that it was what they felt was a good story as opposed to a fun to play type arc.
I am hoping that they post the number of arcs submitted and whether or not each and every one was played or if they weeded some out without ever playing. -
Polar Emergence Neutral Government User Interface Network (PENGUIN)
ARC ID: 29205
Author: @Tubbius
Reason: This arc was like Christmas come early. I was a lot of fun to play. I loved the allies and PENGUINs make me smile. -
Quote:Again I agree! There's a stroke of timing, given that LaserJesus is the perfect example of what he just said. He was actually the first person to review my arc. He gave me a 3, which all but crushed me given the fact I was quite sure CoW was a gift to the MA at the time. His critique, however, was mostly spot on, and the changes I made to CoW - Part 1 as a result (he hasn't reviewed part 2, yet...) have been among the most significant.
Not once did he attack me or demean me, unlike the *second* person to review my arc.
Painful as it was (likely the second most painful review I've had), it was still personable and unbelievably helpful. That's the way negative critique should be handled.
LaserJesus rated my arc 2 stars (one of only two 2 star ratings I received). I hated the rating of course, but because of the way it was written and what he said, I was not upset at all. Honestly some 3 star reviews upset me more.
He is absolutley right when he said "Criticizing and critiquing are two different things. I personally take the critique approach, since MA arcs can be continually updated unless they become Dev's Choice, and thus always have a chance of becoming better."
His review was insightful. He looked at the whole arc and did not focus on one detail or lack of detail. I really appreciate his approach to reviewing. Despite the low rating, it was clear to me he understood the intent of my arc. His criticism was not "redo my arc to fit his logic". He gave me specifics about what dragged the arc down in his eyes and not once did he threaten to shoot me.
Naturally, I would have liked a better rating, but after all I did submit my arc to a thread entitled "LaserJesus' Crucible of Unforgiving Criticism ". -
I would love it if you would play my arc:
In Pursuit of Liberty - 344916

Quote:Did I miss something? Where was it that Police Woman was compared to Simon Cowell? I can see a couple of other reviewers earning that honor on occasion, but PW... No way!
Not at all.
Check out her review of the Most Important Thing and the author's reponse.
Because PW is so skilled and so detailed, a 3 star from her really hurts and the author said he was going to pull his arc after her 3 star review. I felt that way when she gave mine three stars as well so I understood how he felt.
Her review of the arc picked out lots of details and her comments were very valid. She rated based on logic. For me personally the power of that arc was the feelings it evoked and I couldn't base my rating on logic.
The point I was making by mentioning PW, was don't let even the best of reviewers discourage you. Take all the value you can but don't give up. -
The Official Award Results send a message that should encourage us all. Do not give up on your arc because of a bad review from a board critic or because you are stuck at 4 stars with few plays. These results send that message loud and clear:
Best Hero Story Finalists:
• Teen Phalanx Forever! - 67335 – PW – 682 votes 5 stars
• The Most Important Thing - 266877 – Aisynia – 41 votes 4 stars
• Escalation - 6143 – FemFury – 211 votes 4 stars
And the winner was The Most Important Thing
This arc trashed by some board critics and the author was so discouraged by a 3 star review from PW he was going to pull his arc. (I feel his pain there as she is awesome and honestly I felt the same way)
Best Original Story:
• Sabrina's Tale - 1237 – Redbone – 148 plays – 4 stars
• Death to Disco! - 84420 - Wrong Number – 362 plays 4 stars
• Ctrl + Alt + Reset! Aka Time Loop - 137561 – Bubbawheat – 238 plays – 4 stars
I did not play the winning arc but I thought both of the other 2 were awesome. Note that all of the finalists for Original Story are sitting at 4 stars in game.
Sarbrina's Tale won arc of the year with a 4 star in game rating and 148 plays.
This post is not meant to express negative feelings about board reviewers. In fact I want to thank each and every one that took the time to review my arc. Every review was helpful and the process, though sometimes painful, made my arc better.
What I want people to take away from this is, use the board reviewers as much as you can. They have great insight and provide perspectives which are different from your own.
Just don't let a negative review make you give up. Arcs that are hated by some can be really loved by others. -
Quote:Hero Arc: Most Important Thing by Aisyana
Villain Arc: Internship in the Fine art of Revenge by Twoflower
Canon Arc: Tales of Croatoa: A Rose by Any Other Name by @Silvers1 aka Hercules
Original Story: Sabrina's Tale by Redbone (almost broke my refresh button for those 20 seconds)
Villain Group: Blight by Witch Engine
Arc of the Year: Sabrina's Tale by Redbone.
That's a little disappointing, I think Arc of the Year shouldn't have won both categories. But congratulations to all the winners. I've only played Hercules's but I will definitely play the others. All but twoflower's are also nominatees in my Player Choice Awards, so good luck to them there as well.
Gratz to all! This goes to show you that people appreciate different things as 2 of the 5 arcs here were trashed by some board critics.
Tales of Croatoa and the Most Important Thing are 2 of my favorite arcs I have played.
I will most definately play the others when I have time. -
My votes for Best TO Range Arc (1-15) are:
1st Place: Mercytown, the one with the fish #6017 @Tangler
2nd Place: 15+ Minute Tutorial - Knowledge is Power: Architect Entertainment #28470 @Paula -
Quote:Thank you for posting this!I'm not copping out at all, Jesse. My name's Steve and I live in Texas. I've been a cop for almost as long as you've been alive. I've seen many things worthy of making people feel bad about. This game, and a person's attempt at creating something they're willing to put their heart into isn't it.
I'm not saying you're opinion is invalid. If I'm saying anything is out of place, it's how an opinion is acted on. There are people in this forum that use their opinion as a bludgeon, without regard for how that bludgeon affects the real person behind the creation. If the shoe fits, and you feel the need to continue being defensive, have fun with that. I simply believe that a person can have a negative opinion of someone's work without being durrogatory to the person, and if they choose to be ill bred, then at least we know what we're dealing with.
Anyone who submits their arc to this board has either put their heart and soul into a creation, believes it is good and is seeking affirmation, or is pouring their heart and soul into something and seeking help on this board to make it better. In either case, what purpose is served by bashing the arc?
What people like in art, literature and movies is so subjective. Just because a board critic dislikes something doesn't make it bad. Especially in this format, there are all sorts of arcs that I find enjoyable and for many different reasons. I have enjoyed arcs because they have a story I love, because they are funny, because they are fun to play, because they have an emotional impact or because or they make me think. Some board critics have tunnel vision. If an arc does not meet their concept of what is logical or their model of what makes a good arc, they bash it. Or worse yet, they find one detail (or lack of detail) in an arc that they find objectionable and they label the entire arc as bad. They can't look past a flaw and find what might be good in an arc.
We are all human and are bound to like different things. No one is asking board critics to like everything or 4 and 5 star everything. Just ask yourself why you need to bash something that someone else poured their heart and soul into in such a nasty way? Is it to help the author or to make yourself seem important? Are you trying to provide input to make an arc better? If so, do you really think that most people whose arc is attacked, will look past the nastiness and take away anything of value?
Dalghryn said it perfectly. "I've seen many things worthy of making people feel bad about. This game, and a person's attempt at creating something they're willing to put their heart into isn't it." -
Quote:This arc was well written and at just the right difficulty level.Well, since you still appear to be doing this, feel free to check out my arc [B]Something comes to Yarmouth[b] (#58812) whenever you get a chance.

I would love it if you would play and give feedback on my arc:

Thanks -
I played all of these arcs and the quality of each was excellent. It was very hard for me to compare the Audition with the others. I know it is Multi-Part but it has such a different experience. That being said my votes for Best Multi-Part Arc (2+ arcs) are:
1st Place: The Audition Part 1 #221240 and Part 2 #221241 @MRCaptainMan (because his sense of humor works so well for me that I couldn't stop smiling)
2nd Place: The Consequences of War Part 1 #227331 and Part 2 #241496 @Dalghryn (this arc is awesome and I wish I could have two first place votes) -

Reason: This arc had a really nice story and for me the perfect difficulty level. I wasn't bored for a minute. A perfect arc for lowbies to play and level! -
Thanks so much for taking the time to review my arc. I am glad you enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed your arc. It had a nice story that kept me wanting to play.
I love how you mixed up the maps and tasks and I was never bored! I played it on a level 10 with the easiest difficulty setting. For me your difficulty level was perfect. At a few points a small challenge, but easy enough for me to enjoy your story.
I found one typo (I think). In the mission 2 NPC intro: Should be "this bank comes with a twist" instead of "this bank come with a twist". Other than that I didn't notice any errors.
So bottom line is a really fun arc which I would definitely recommend. It is especially good since I was able to level my lowbie and have fun at the same time.
In return I would like you to play my arc: In Pursuit of Liberty - Arc ID 221702
It is a light-hearted arc that is intended to be fun. I attempted to create a small mystery where the player participates to help a heroine find her destiny. The NPC will not tell you everything and that is by intent. It will auto level you to 45. I recommend play on lowest setting on someone with a travel power. Level 50 works but actually 46 and below gives you a better variety of opponents.
I hope you enjoy mine. I really enjoyed yours -
I am posting this arc here because Sumerian played my arc and gave feedback. In return I played:

If that's OK, send a tell to @Gypsy Rose some time when you are on.
Great idea
