This arc had a nice story and it was lots of fun to play.

What I liked best: The customs were very well-balanced and fun for me to fight. The story kept my interest. In short the arc was fun for me all the way through.

I'll be PMing you momentarily regarding "In Pursuit of Liberty." REALLY good stuff in that arc!
This was a very well-written arc that was lots of fun to play.

What I liked best: WADDLE! Playing this arc made me smile. The story was fun and the writing was excellent.
  3. When I created my first MA arc, I had no idea what a challenge it would be. I played so many arcs that were really bad that I assumed getting 5 star ratings would be easy. How wrong I was!

My original goal was to create a Hall of Fame Arc, but in today's MA environment that is unlikely, especially with my arc topic. So my current goal with this thread, is to get as many plays as possible for my arc from people who might actually like it and have fun.

In return for playing my arc, I will play yours.

My rules for the thread are as follows.

    - My arc is about time travel, and while it is not really an origin story in the traditional sense, it is about you helping someone find her origin. So if you hate time travel or do not care for origin stories of any sort, please do not play my arc.

    - This arc was at 5 stars before it was griefed by an unknown player who left no comment. I would like to regain that rating. I am most definately not requesting that you 5 star an arc that you don't feel deserves it, but I would prefer that if you don't feel it deserves 5 stars, that you not rate it and instead PM as to what you found lacking.

    - In return for playing my arc and sending me a PM about what you liked or what you feel needs to change, I will play your arc. This is where the "do no harm" comes in. I will not rate your arc any lower than the current in-game rating. If I cannot rate it at least as high as the current rating, I will not rate it at all and I will PM you with the reason. If your goal is 5 stars, tell me and I will not rate your arc unless I feel it deserves 5 stars.

    So in short:

    - Play my arc: In Pursuit of Liberty - 344916 @Gypsy Rose and rate or not as specified above. Send me an in-game comment on the arc.

    - After playing my arc, post your arc Name, ID and author here and specify if your goal is only 5 star ratings.

    - I will play your arc and rate or at least comment as specified and post in this thread what I liked best about your arc. I will not post anything negative about your arc here, nor will I rate it below its current rating. Hence I will "do no harm".

My criteria for rating 5 stars for arcs submitted here is as follows:

    - Your arc must either have some plot I can follow or be somewhat funny.
    - There must be text that I can understand in the mission introduction, send-off, still busy and return success dialogs.
    - Your contact must have a bio.
    - I must be able to complete the arc on easy settings without extreme frustration. If I repeatedly die because your villains are so extreme or spend hours on a kill all or looking for a glowie I will only 5 star your arc if it is otherwise awesome.

If you have any questions about my arc or this thread, feel free to PM me.

    Enjoy
  4. Today I played "A Little Night Music".

I played on the easiest settings and was able to solo it without too much trouble, but I did need to use inspirations. For me it was slightly too hard for the easy settings. However I was playing on a level 35 with no fancy IOs.

That being said, I really enjoyed this arc. It had a nice story, but for me its strength was the customs, the mission titles and the text. It was so full of music references from Phantom to Caberet. There were tons of details that made me smile. In short, I loved the arc, and the reason I wish it was slightly easier is so I could fully enjoy all the great details.
  5. My votes for Best Author:

    2 points = @Sister Twelve

    1 point = @Celestial Nemesis
  6. I really enjoyed all the entries for best new arc and I gave them all 5 stars, but my votes for this category are:

    Best New Arc

    @Jail.Bird - The New Paragon Society Reborn #355351 - 2 points

@Lazarus - Breaking the Barrier (and Putting it Back Together Again) #347029 - 1 point

    Arc Name: The Greater Good

    Author: ArrowRose

Character Used: Level 50 Dual Blades / Willpower Scrapper
Thank you so much for taking the time to play and review my arc. Below are some responses to you comments:

    Quote:
the beginning of the arc seems unnecessary. The author mentions "Captain Courageous", who introduces the player's character to "Dr. Allura", who in turn introduces the player's character to the contact for this arc. Why? Neither of these characters are seen or even mentioned again throughout the course of this arc, and it seems like their only purpose is to introduce the player to Angela Goodheart. But the arc description states that the player's character might be doing things they don't normally do throughout this arc, so why not just have the player's character decide to check out "The Greater Good" organization from the outset? I've played several other arcs which have the player's character do much more "out of character" actions to begin an arc, and none of those had warnings in their descriptions
The part that you reference above, was added in response to some comments I received from others expressing concern that their character did not have enough motivation to do what he or she was doing. Your visits to Dr. Allura were in fact brainwashing sessions and thus an explanation as to why you would commit acts of evil with so little justification. Perhaps I can rework this to leave out the mentor but maintain the reference to the fact that you have visited the doctor.

    Quote:
Finally (and probably my largest point of confusion in this arc), Angela Goodheart. I found Goodheart to be somewhat of a double-edged sword in this regard; on the one hand, I definitely found her to be the most interesting character in this arc (even though she never appears in any mission), but on the other hand, the player never really finds out anything about her. It's stated in the final mission that there's no cure to Worthington's brainwashing, yet Goodheart seems to free herself from the brainwashing with no help from the player's character. It's heavily implied that she's the one leaving the player notes throughout all of the missions, yet she seems to happily hand the player's character all of the Greater Good's assignments until the final mission. And neither her contact bio nor the final mission outro give any indication as to how or why she wanted to destroy the Greater Good. From what we learn, it can be assumed that perhaps she broke free of Worthington's mind control and wated to see the organization destroyed, but again, how did she break out of the mind control in the first place?
I wanted her to be a bit of a mystery, but I will think about how I can add a bit more about her as she is my favorite character as well.

    Quote:
In the end, this was a very hard arc to rate; I was going back and forth between 4 and 5 stars for some time, but in the end, the final mission won me over. The final mission really pulled this whole arc together, and while the execution wasn't perfect, I felt this arc really exemplified the theme of "doing evil for the greater good". For any players who like running through entries into Dr. Aeon's challenge, I would highly recommend giving this arc a try.
At the momement my gaming computer with the arc and critter files is dead, but when it is fixed I will address some of the points you raised.

I am glad that you like the arc overall. Thanks again for your review!
  8. Thank you so much for taking the time to play my arc yet again and giving me such a detailed review.

Sadly my computer where all my custom files are has died, and in the past when I edited and republished an arc on my laptop, I had problems because the customs are not present.

Hopefully the computer or at least the data can be saved and I will fix the issues you pointed out then.

I am so happy that you liked it better
  9. I agree completely. There are definitely lots of people out there who are in AE to farm. Many times someone asks to join me and as soon as I tell them I am playing a story arc they loose interest.

I think it should work as a toggle where an arc would need to be designated as farm vs story. This should help farmers find farms and help people looking for story arcs find stories. The default search should not include farms.

Anything reported as a farm should be tagged as a farm and if the author feels that it is a story rather than a farm, they can report the mistag.
  10. Batteries Included
    ARC ID: 193760
    Author: @Lazorman

Reason: This arc had a really nice story and was full of details and clues that made it lots of fun to play. The contact was interesting and there were lots of funny things mixed in that made me smile. A great way to start my day!

    Argent is French for money.
I am still working on a new name for Mr. Richman. So far I have thought of Winston, Goldman and Silverman. I really like Winston, but I am not sure having both names (Winston and Worthington) start with W is a good idea.

Any suggestions/comments from Bubba or anyone else would be welcomed.

What I am looking for is a name to replace Mr. Richman, which is in some way symbolic of wealth, but a bit less literal than Richman.
  12. Thank you for agreeing to re-review my arc "In Pursuit of Liberty". I played your arc Talos Vice and posted my comments in your thread. I loved it!

I want to explain about my intent for this arc. I had several goals in mind when I created it:

The first, was to create a fun play experience by avoiding long walls of boring text, inserting some humor (or attempts at humor) throughout the arc and creating an arc that was very playable on easy settings.

The second was to create a small mystery that the player unravels as he or she plays. (This is why I did not have my contact spell out everything for you).

The third goal was to make the arc themed. This includes the red, white and blue coloring in the contact screens, the many people with Liberty in their names, the Followers and the fact that you the player are "pursuing" liberty on mutiple levels.

I have come to realize that I was very unfortunate in the choices I made for this arc. I was not aware that many players hate time travel. I was not aware of the great need many players have for arcs to be about them and how much "origin" stories are hated. Lastly, I was not aware of the need for any arcs that include "canon" characters to portray them in a way that perfectly matches the players perception of them. So my first arc, which I have poured my heart and soul into since June 2009 was "doomed" from the start.

I made many minor changes to the arc since you last reviewed it, but the most major change was to replace my contact Ms. Liberty with a custom Mendor, Helena Gail Wells. Her bio reads: "Mendor Helena Gail Wells is one of the newest Mendors of Ourobos. Like Mendor Lazurus, she has traveled through time so much that she has lost her sense of continuity and has been known to ramble."

I did this for several reasons, but it was your last review that ultimately caused me to do so. I really wanted Ms. Liberty to be the contact because of the arc's theme, but no matter how hard I tried, I could not make her true to many of my arc's players canon perception. Also, it was hard to refute your logic as to why given that Ms. Liberty was a relative, she did not do more.

Since my arc is about time travel, I decided a mendor made sense. I chose a custom mendor because I did not want to again fall into the trap of being unsuccessful in portraying an existing canon character. For now, I recolored an existing Mendor because I do not have space to make a new one. When we get space, I will replace her with a custom look as well.
I chose her name as a tribute to H. G. Wells. I wanted her to be a bit vague and I felt that making her a Mendor allowed that to make sense.

The other main change I made to the arc since you last played it, was that I attempted to convey that the arc is really meant to be about you the player, and what you do to help a hero achieve her destiny, as opposed to a traditional origin story.

There are a few minor things that you did not like in your earlier reviews that I did not change because other people had specifically commented that they liked them. These were my "attempts" at humor. For example, I kept "Hurry you don't have much time", when you were going back to the past. I also kept the swords in a coffin, both because I felt it matched the dark mood of the map and because some people commented that they enjoyed the interact bar text.

I carefully considered all the feedback that was given to me by you and the other board reviewers, and most of it is incorporated in the current version of this arc.
I hope that you like it better. I really appreciate your willingness to look at in again.

    Thanks
  13. I really loved this arc. I have no heroes who are level 12-20, but I found a level 11 scrapper Sandy Beach, who I created for a beach themed SG that never quite got off the ground.

She was a perfect hero to play this arc and the difficulty level was fine even though she was not level 12 yet.

Below are some notes I made while I played.

    Mission 1:
Contact: I loved that the contact interaction was a in a different format!
I enjoyed the still busy dialog.

Loved the troll in the bright pink shirt.

I am not sure if I missed it somehow, but I did not see any text when I lost Croquette or when I went back and got him.

    Mission 2:
Contact dialog: The postage stamp comment made me smile

Loved that you recolored the villains to fit the theme.
Kitty was a nice touch – actually sad truth behind her bio
    Libby too

The comment about the Statesman doll actually made me laugh.

    Mission 3:

    Entry pop-up made me smile.
    Good level of play.

    Overall impression:
For me this was another one of your arcs that was near perfection. The arc was so themed and so full of little details. I love the small bits of humor that are sprinkled throughout it! In my book this is up there with Teen Phalanx. I enjoyed it that much!
  14. I loved this arc. It was very well written and easy to solo. I especially love the Grinch-like last mission and the souvenir. The arc really touched me without going over the top. Great job!
  15. Gratz! I love time travel and I really love this arc. Seeing this made my day
  16. In addition to my firm belief that we should not give in game low ratings to people who submit their arcs to this forum for feedback, I am in complete agreement that the MA interface should be changed.

I think that a separate tab for the Dev's Choice, Guest Author and Hall of Fame arcs is a great idea. These arcs have already attained what many of us may be working for. It will still be easy to find them and it will give more exposure to other arcs.

I like the idea of random arcs showing initially on the first page, with some 4 and 5 star arcs, and some completely random arcs as well.

A way to identify griefers would also be great. Perhaps if a rating was more than 2 below the current in-game rating, the author could get an alert. So a 5 star arc that got a 1 or 2 rating could trigger an alert and a 4 star arc that got a 1 rating would do the same thing. At this point the author could choose to report a potential grief rating for investigation. A different implementation of this would be to not allow a vote that is more than 2 below the current in-game rating. This would prevent accidental 1 star votes on a 4 or 5 star arc and give griefers less impact. They could still 3 star a 5 star, but that would make it easier for a quality arc to recover. If the arc wasn't truly 5 star quality, over time 3 star and 4 star votes would lower it.

Finally, I think archiving stale arcs would be great. However, I consider the fact that an author refreshes an arc as a more important criteria for keeping it in the active search results than whether it was recently played. An arc from an author who no longer even plays the game could get a random play, and keeping that arc in the system instead of an arc from an author who cares enough about his or her arc to refresh it would be unfair.

Hopefully the devs will consider at least the new tab idea presented in this thread.
  17. To be sure to be fair I will nominate @Jail.Bird's arc The New Paragon Society Reborn (arc id 355351), for "Best New Arc".

I will nominate @Sister Twelve author of The Long Road Back (arc id 340454), for "Best Unknown Author". At this time this author has 2 arcs with a total of 10 plays.

  19. I'd like to nominate @Jail.Bird, author of The New Paragon Society Reborn (arc id 355351), for "Best Unknown Author". At this time he has 2 arcs with a total of 19 plays.

This arc was a great follow-up to the Golden Age Secret of the Paragon Society (by another author). It was a lot of fun to play, well-written and I loved the customs.

As an aside, I wanted to comment that I spent a bit of time attempting to find a great new author by looking at recent arcs with 4 and 5 stars and found nothing. It finally dawned on me that people who post on this forum care about MA and were likely to write quality arcs. I looked at many posters here who I knew had not won anything to disqualify them, but most of them had too many arcs or too many plays.

I found this arc and really enjoyed it and so I chose to support a valued member of this community with my nomination for "Best Unknown Author".

I am in complete agreement that all feedback is valuable. I took something important away from every review I got, both positive and negative. Additionally I respect the fact that a person may not want to 5 star an arc that in his or her view does not deserve it.

But PW I ask you what purpose is served by you giving a lower than 5 star rating to the person in game before they tell you that their arc is final? The fact that a person submitted an arc to you means that they care and want to make it better. Could you not perhaps withhold your rating if it is lower than 5 stars to give them a chance to do so? What harm would that do?

I honestly believe they are speaking on opinion rather than actual personal experience. I agree with her because I've seen exactly that happen with my arcs.

My arcs that currently have five stars get an average of a play a day (once they pass a threshold, which seems to be about 20-30 plays). My arcs that currently have four stars get fewer than one play every six months. That's not opinion. That's is, in fact, exactly how it's happened for me, and, I'd suspect most other people.

I've had three arcs go from four star ratings to five star ratings (and yes, it took months for that one play that bumped it up to five stars to even happen). For all three arcs, the instant they hit five stars, they started getting about a play a day.

Two of the arcs maintained that rating. One of them lost it after a few days. The ones that maintained the rating get about a play a day. The one that lost it hasn't gotten a single play since it lost it - that was a few months ago.

I agree completely with Wrong Number. A rating of 5 stars = you are voting that the arc is worth other players taking a look at. A rating of less than 5 stars, EVEN 4 stars = you are voting that the arc is not good enough to ever get played again. And if your vote actually takes it to less than 5 stars, you have *ensured* it will not get played again. Heck, that's why even my scoring system is so strongly weighted toward giving 5 stars in game; there almost always has to be a major technical issue (like XP issues, an ubeatable foe) or the writing has to be TERRIBLE, not just average but actually very bad, before I'm willing to risk voting a five star arc into oblivion. And yes, in the rare cases where I did notice that my vote caused an arc with more than about ten plays to lose five star status (which is vary rare because most of the arcs people suggest that I look at really are good enough that I think other people should play them), I have changed my vote to return it's five star status. I'm not cruel, and I will not be the one responsible for condemning an arc to never be played. Heck, there's been times were the arc was 4 stars, and I ended up giving it 4 stars (again, rare - much of the time I've thought it was worth 5 stars) - and almost every time I've checked just to make sure a 5-star vote wouldn't bump it up to 5 stars. And if it would, I've just gone ahead and given it 5-stars.

It may not be the intent behind the rating system, but, as I've said, I agree completely with WN's assessment of the effect of the rating system.

What I don't know is if the effect of the system is exactly what the Dev's intended - if they wanted to ensure that the system was set up in a way to make sure that very, very, very few arcs actually got regular plays. That's always something you have to consider, because if its true - or at least if the effect of the system is acceptable to them (and, frankly I think it is), then the odds are very good no attempt will ever be made to overhaul the system.
I agree with all of the above 100%. I had an arc sitting at 4 stars and 74 plays that got no plays in months. I made some changes to the arc and republished it under a new ID to to test the waters and see if people liked it better, before I unpublished the original. People seemed to like the changes I made, and it was sitting at 5 stars for a while. This arc, that was basically the same arc with the same title, the same key words and the same story got played every few days while it was sitting at 5 stars. Yesterday, a random person played it and knocked it out of 5 stars without even leaving a comment. I am betting that unless a board reviewer is kind enough to play it, or I personally contact someone in game and ask them to play, it won't get played again.

I understand that some people are not comfortable with giving 5 stars to an arc they don't feel deserves 5 stars, and I would never ask them to. Message board reviewers should certainly rate an arc whatever they believe it deserves on the board, but I ask you what purpose does it serve to give an in-game rating to an arc that will severely damage its chances of being played?

The MA community is shrinking fast. Why would anyone who is interested enough in it to post here or read these boards want to do something that could cause it to shrink more? Any rating that is less than 5 stars, is discouraging in an environment that is filled with 5 star farms. There will be a percentage of people who get low ratings who will become discouraged and quit. This is because a single low rating can drag down an arc so much, that no matter how much an author improves it, it has very little chance of attaining 5 stars.

What would be wrong with providing honest comments and an honest opinion of the star rating of an arc, but refraining from giving an in-game rating that would lower its current standing? Who exactly would this hurt? Why doesn't a person who pours his or her energy into creating something deserve a chance to improve it based on your feedback, without you damaging its official rating? If you knock down its star rating, you are significantly hurting the chances it will be played, and perhaps discouraging an author who had the potential to improve and become great.

In the end, each person needs to do what he or she thinks is fair. All I ask is for each person that reads this to think hard about the impact of an in-game rating before they give it, and to ask yourself what purpose is served by knowingly knocking down an arc's rating. Who are you helping and who are you hurting?

    Motivation:
    - I am really saddened that a review from me appears to have driven an author and contributor to these forums to quit using Mission Architect. This is not what I want to be about at all.
    - I would really prefer my reviews to be used as constructive criticism to try and improve people's story arcs.
    - I'm getting more and more requests to "re-review" story arcs, with the author hoping for a better rating. I don't want to discourage this; I believe story arcs have the capacity to improve over time, as a result of player feedback and author edits.
    - Of the last 3 "re-reviews" though, I gave two story arcs exactly the same rating and one story arc a lower rating. This makes me think that my reviews are not clear enough at communicating what I think needs to be changed.
    - Also, as I get drawn more into the "MA Arc" community, I find I am more and more often reviewing story arcs of people I've actually encountered in-game and interacted with. Seeing a player's disappointment at getting a low rating is painful to me. However, I cannot justify giving every story arc 5 stars. But perhaps I can re-shape my reviews to explain how people can get a 5 star rating from me.

Therefore, I'm changing review format as follows:
    - At the start of each review, every arc will start with a score of "5.0" in my mind.
    - I will deduct varying amounts of points for various infractions; generally "-0.5" or "-1.0" for something I view as a serious problem, "-0.1" for a minor problem, and "-0.01" for typos and nitpicks.
    - I will award bonus points for anything I see that I think is especially cool; generally "+0.1" for each "cool" item.
    - "Sense of immersion" is especially important to me; this is not easy to do, but if your story arc can achieve this, I will give it "+1.0" bonus points.
    - At the end of my review, I will total up all the points and round nearest to calculate my star rating, with a maximum rating of 5 stars and minimum rating of 2 stars. I reserve 1 star ratings for arcs that are actually farms or include an obvious farm or non-story-related mission.

Under this system, you can totally get a 5 star rating from me without doing anything that I award "bonus points" for, so they should truly be "bonus points" -- basically, countering bad stuff.

On all future re-reviews, I will limit myself to only looking at problems I previously identified (unless the fix to one of the problems I identified actually generates a new problem). With each problem clearly identified with a point value associated with it, I hope it will be much clearer what you need to do in order to get a better rating from me. With that in mind, please ask for a re-review only if you believe you've addressed enough problems to make me increase the rating by at least 1 star.

My hope is that this more transparent system will let everyone have the potential of getting a 5 star rating from me on re-review.

I know some reviewers already use a point system something like this (only the details of the calculation are not public). I've previously resisted doing this because I tend to calculate the final star rating more by "gut feeling" and didn't want people to challenge each and every calculation and/or try to "game" the system. But the things I listed above under "motivations" now outweigh those considerations in my mind. So, feel free to try and "game" this system.

I'm not quite sure whether this new system will result in my average arc rating going up or down, but going to try it for a bit.
I am so impressed that you are doing this. Your reviews are so detailed and your feedback is incredibly useful. It is very clear to me that you tried to be fair, but I feel that it is almost impossible to be fair with a gut-based review. All of us have things we like and dislike and many of these things are not a reflection on the quality of a work, but rather a matter of personal taste.

I was one of the authors whose arcs you re-reviewed and gave the same rating. You commented that you wondered why I re-submitted it. The answer to that question is because I think your arcs are incredible, I really value your opinion, I believed I had addressed the major issues you raised, and I felt that my arc was way better than it was the first time you reviewed it.

When I saw your re-review I was very very discouraged and nearly decided to give up on MA altogether and in fact I am still considering doing so.

Given your post I quoted above, I would love for you to re-review my arc In Pursuit of Liberty. I made so many changes, I republished it under a new ID which is 344916.

If it would be helpful to you, I could consolidate the issues you pointed out in your earlier reviews and post what I did to address them.

Let me know which of your arcs you would like played in return.

Thanks so much for trying this new approach!

Based on the above quote, I realize that you may not quite be open for submissions yet, but I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year and to thank you for your review of my first MA arc. It was very raw at the time, and despite all you found wrong with it, you gave me enough positive feedback to motivate me to work hard to make it better.

Whenever you are open again for submissions, I would love if you would review my second real arc attempt:

    Arc Name: The Greater Good
    Arc ID: # 350877
    Morality: Hero
    Creator: @Gypsy Rose
    Difficulty Level: 45-54
Enemies: Paragon Police, Longbow, Family, Custom Group
Synopsis: What is good? What is evil? Would you perform an act of evil for the greater good? Play this arc and search within yourself for answers. Author's Note: This arc is a work of fiction. Any resemblance between your hero as portrayed in this arc and your actual hero is purely coincidental.
Length: 4 missions - the first map is very small - total play time should be less than one hour

    Thanks
  24. Best character was another hard choice. My votes are:

1st – The Firecracker Kid - well developed and funny
2nd- WADDLE - So loveable - the one and only ally the friend I played with didn't want to ditch
3rd – Cobalt Stinger - an interesting contact who helped me enjoy an arc I really loved

An honorable mention goes to McGrimm. I loved his bio!
