The problem is that the new characters don't have the time to carve out their own niche. I can't stand adding female versions of established male characters, especially when they replace said character(I'm looking at you Black Panther). She-Hulk only works the less involvement she has with her cousin and even now, they had to add another She-Hulk or two. It's all a mess with plot devices that seem to hang around too long (see: X-23).
-
I thought the Devs Choice ones where supposed to eventually become regular missions.
-
Branching missions, Detective missions, RV style zone effects or simply Dynamic Content.

Quote:One of the things that I found interesting about that other game was the ability to make characters based on signature characters.Something's that's bugged me for a long while has been, of all things, box cover art.
On the City of Heroes box, you've got Statesman, Sister Psyche, along with a dozen or so other heroes charging.
And you know what? If you think these guys look cool, you can make them! or at least something reasonably close to them.
On the City of Villains box, you have Lord Recluse producing his minions from his armpits.
And you know what? If you think these guys are cool, too bad.
Can I duplicate Ghost Widow's costume? No. Can I get something close? Nah-ah.
What about Captain Mako? Sorry. Something close? Out of the question.
Scirocco? Nada on both accounts.
Black Scorpion? Nope.jpeg
What the hell? And it's six issues before I'm able to even make myself look like any of the mooks behind the four Generals. Oh, and Lord Recluse is right out.
Hell, even with GR's cover we have ONE character we can make something close to (Dedemona, though there's only three if I recall). -
Still wish we could "Execute Twisted Schemes".
-
I wonder if our engine could handle animating something that big? The closest comparison is Hamidon and he is stationary. Although, there's no reason he would have to move other than to rise and fall.

Here we go. -
Wow, even some schmoe at the Post knows our engine is getting old. That's saying something.
-
The idea came from fighting evil Aurora Borialis. When the fight didn't look good for her, she took off and it became a fight across the skies over the city. I was amazed how simply moving made the fight that much more difficult.

Im at the end of my rope here and hope my peeps here on the boards can help. I am running into some serious rubberbanding in and out of missions that is (in large teams) causing the game to crash. I have a feeling that it is because of a new Cisco Valet router I just bought that I have placed behind my Vodofone Easybox modem. I think I am double NATing, but I can't seem to find a solid workaround. Any ideas?
-
This is more opinion than an iron-clad proposal. As it stands, our AV and EB are simply targets with loads of hit-points. I was think that certain AVs would have normal (relative) hit-points if their character is supposed to be of normal strength and resistance, but would have extremely high level abilities. A perfect example would be Manticore; a man of peak physical fitness, but still only human level resistance. I think his AV hit-points could be set to boss level, but his defence through Maneuvers would be at a compensatory level, along with the effects of trick arrow would still make him rather formidable even for a team, but would require new tactics other than just standing toe-to-toe, wearing down his HPs. Could this with a specialized AI for his type of character that allowed him to move around a fight in an agile style. Every AV and even GMs could be customized in this way, making them unique in how to fight them, even making variations based on team or solo fights.

-
Ya know, I knew I had written that wrong right after I hit send, but thought, 'What the heck, these boards are pretty forgiving of grammar.". LOL! What was I thinking? Anyway, I think the t-shirt, jeans, and boots costume is a little stale after so many years. At least give him something better for his Preatorian-self.
-
Now that FF is trying to side with the angles, I think the time is right for him to get a real costume. I think he needs to look like more than just another Outcast.
-
...but would need the impervium pattern (see the cape from the origin pack) for skin pattern

Quote:It seems what bugs you about Origins in this instance is what made you want it removed; it's ambiguity. Between what we know from the Origin of Power, Dr. Brainstorm, and various mission clues, we get a myriad of theories based on different points of view. There's enough ambiguity to allow us to still create our own stories and weave them into the great CoX mythos. Here's the thing: It "introduces" me to origins as a tangible game aspect - possibly the single worst plot device in the history of the game... And then does nothing with it. It's a bad story, because it's pointless and, moreover, because it's destructive. It ruins what could have been a good plot element, and for what? It does NOTHING with it.
I may sound like a snob saying this, but the Origin of Powers idea hasn't earned the right to jump the shark. I could have swallowed this if the story were interesting or compelling, if it lulled me into the idea and THEN slapped me with the railroading nature. But no. The story is just about nothing but a straight jacket.
I assume the story is "right" because if it's wrong then it has no reason to exist. -
Origins are no more constraining than having to start you career in Paragon City or the Rogues or Preatoria. You have to write your narratives around the fact that you only have a few abilities to start with and have to train to learn more. It seems everyone is saying Origins is making it hard for you to be creative.
-
Marvel has a great term to differentiate that; "Mutate" or someone that was mutated instead of being born with a mutation.
-
Quote:If I recall correctly, its described as siphoning off human potential and seems to cause the characters to be less "motivated." As I mentioned, Dark Watcher already has his powers but never really considers himself as being capable of changing the world around him until after the box is opened. Monica isn't magically made more athletic, she's just less willing to play the damsel in distress, learns martial arts so she can defend herself and finds she very good at it. We're never really given any indication James St. John-Smythe's intellect increases. There's every indication that they very much could have been super heroes before the box is opened they just don't make use of that potential.
Well if human potential is the strive to evolve, it would make sense that the old Gods would want humans to remain stagnant and focused in their worship of them. It would also make sense that by creating a population of super humans, they could use that admiration of them as replacement of direct worship. -
I think the entire issue stems from how our powers came to be. The whole "Pandora's Box", "Well of the Furies" thing begs the question of where do Heroes from outer space get their powers from if they aren't even from Earth? Now we are being reminded more often of the Origin of Powers and also reminded more and more of how we those Alien characters seem not to fit in the over-arching narrative of the game. Sure, Kheldians have a well fleshed out back story, but how many stories arcs about the other five origins must you do before you wonder just were do you really fit in?
-
Quote:And that's why you don't speak to Sunstorm as a Natural Contact or as part of the Origin of Powers, because his "Natural Alien" origin doesn't fit in the categories of origins that we have. The Devs are fine with leaving it ambiguous, but if the day comes that they do, I think we'll be looking at a new Origin, like it or not.Everywhere else? Such as? What, throwing knives? Are we assuming aliens have to use future tech, mind control and space ships? A large percentage of my own aliens come from vastly UNDERDEVELOPED worlds of no real technology to speak of, bring powers with them that they were basically born with. One specific alien, in fact, comes from an alternate Earth where the world is hideously inhospitable and humans simply evolved to be big, tough and unkillable. Her PRIMARY POWER is an axe. How much stranger is it to have a throwing knife?
What else? Enhancements? The ones named after training disciplines and techniques? Why, are aliens precluded from knowing martial arts, being disciplined or training? Why does everyone always assume that just because a character is alien and born with certain powers, that this character has never had to train, persevere or practice to perfection? If we can assume that a person can train his body to gain greater physical strength, higher endurance and stronger bones, then why can a person who already has the ability to shoot energy out of his hands not train to shoot more energy out of his hands faster and with greater precision without exhausting himself? You don't need to be human to train.
What else? The origin of powers arcs? Both of the characters who talk about the Natural origin are natural humans, so obviously they'll speak about their own experiences. But the origin of powers contacts are provably wrong, and not just because I don't like what they're saying. They contradict each other on numerous occasions. Suppose that instead of Manticore, Percy Winkley sent us to speak with Sunstorm? Think he'd have told the same story? Probably not, but Sunstorm is just as qualified to speak about Natural characters as anyone, being that he's a Peacebringer of the Natural origin.
What, then? Where does the game assume that a Natural character is human, exactly? More specifically, where does the game assume a Natural character cannot be anything BUT human? -
Quote:All your doing is creating an artificial slippery slop.I'm gonna have to make a point against this.
When you say humans, do you mean, humans as we are now IRL, or humans in a comic book physics/biology/chemistry using universe?
We have people IRL who can get kicked in the groin without flinching or doubling over, who can rest on spears or have concrete smashed onto them or break concrete with their bare hands. An Eastern story trope, especially in Japanese manga, is the manifestation of Ki to unleash blasts. These are highly trained humans doing that (Ryu from Street Fighter, as an example.)
Some might say that's magic origin, but is it? The power is coming from inside them, harnessing their own life force and spiritual energy to do so. That gives you perfectly human characters who, through intense training and discipline, have been able to unleash blasts of energy and pull off feats that even some metahumans would be incapable of.
Suspension of disbelief works wonders. As does making generalized game mechanics suit a character. A friennd of mine has HP represent the character's luck for dodging attacks. When their luck, literally, runs out, they get hit seriously enough to take them down. One of my characters uses HP as a telekinetic shield, that depletes when hit, replenishes over time and she can use powers to boost that shield (such as Drain Psyche for the +Regen)
Lastly, say we did add Alien Orign.
What about people who go "I want a robot origin!"? There's then a precedent and people will complain and pester for that. Then someone goes "I want a psychic origin!" and "I want an elf origin!" and "I want a ghost origin!" or "I want a cyborg origin!" and so on and so forth.
A system that worked then becomes bogged down with all these other origins that are frankly unneeded when, as has been said before, the basic 5 cover it fine. You don't want your Natural 'Alien' using throwing knives?
... Don't use them? Take the power off the tray and never use it. That's what I do for mutant characters who wouldn't be seen throwing that toxic thing, or science characters who wouldn't use those tranq darts.
If it isn't broke, don't try to shoehorn in things just because you disagree with 'Natural' counting more than just humans.
