In classical politics, a tyrant is one who has taken power by their own means as opposed to hereditary or constitutional power. This mode of rule is referred to as tyranny.
The word derives from Latin tyrannus, meaning "illegitimate ruler", and this in turn from the Greek τύραννος, týrannos, meaning "sovereign, master",[1] although the latter was not pejorative and applicable to both good and bad leaders alike.

    -- Wikipedia, of course
Exactly. Tyrant was not originally a pejorative term.

Compared to some truly incompetent rulers who inherited their kingdoms, a tyrant who was adept enough to seize power to himself was a welcome change. A tyrant is the poster boy for a meritocracy.

It was the Athenians leaning toward democracy and the Romans with their Republican Senate which demonized the tyrant. And boy did those bookish types trash the idea of a tyrant. And while the Athenians and the Roman Senate are precursors of modern Representative Democracy; they weren't boy scouts. They both wanted rule by 'the people', meaning a few wealthy, male slave owners.

By the Middle Ages, Aquinas was using the term 'tyrant' as a neutral word for any ultimate leader, whether they be king, or chieftain, or war lord, or emperor. And since the overwhelming majority of human existence lived under the rule of a single powerful leader; this was simply considered the norm.

The Renaissance and Age of Enlightenment started to bring in critical thinking about the role of a tyrant and from whence the mandate to rule is based. And in order to make the point that all the people should have a say, they engaged in tyrant-bashing.

But tyrants aren't always that bad. If a populace is in chaos or lacks the resources to be self-governing (ignorance, lack of education, under an epidemic, break down of local government, under gang rule, being attacked by a foreign army), then in those cases, a tyrant is a very good idea.

We've seen in recent history that removing a tyrant doesn't automatically allow democracy to spring up overnight. Both in Hungary and Iraq, the removal of a bad tyrant without replacing him with a benevolent tyrant simply allowed generations-old racial hatreds to become civil wars.

The assumption that a tyrant is always worse then the people governing themselves is naive position born of ideology. Sometime the people are incapable of self governance and instead of letting them kill each other in anarchy, you need a tyrant to govern until you can teach the people to govern themselves. Although, the problem with that is that sometimes tyrants get rather used to their power and are reluctant to give it up even when the people are ready for self-governance.

Not to mention that the Freedom Phalanx is based on a Greek naming convention, and from that we get more ancient terminology: Preatoria and Tyrant.
  2. Sales are down after the a year's worth of the biggest recession since the Great Depression and unemployment is at it highest in 30 years?

    Surprising!

The Devs can and have permanently banned folks without fear of trespassing any criminal code. Can they be sued over it? Yes, you can sue over anything. Will the suit have a chance of winning? Nope -- most likely be thrown out of court.
  4. These also will help you get out of a mission:
    1. Pocket D Teleporter (GvE Edition)

    2. Base Teleporter (Vet Reward, Day Job power)

    3. Ouroboros Teleporter (Level 25+ attained in-game)

    4. Self Destruction, and then go to Hospital or Base [incurs no debt] (Cyborg Super Booster pack)

    5. Market Teleporter (purchasable at a Market, Day Job power)
I make use of all these methods in TFs especially when I know where the next mission or task will be. For example, at the end of the first mission of the Lady Grey TF, I'll use Self Destruction to 'die' so that I can get back to the Vanguard Base hospital quickly to talk to the contact, Lady Grey. Or if the next task is to Talk to Ms. Liberty/Azuria, I'll use the Market TPer from within the mission to go directly to Atlas Park. If the next mission is in Boomtown or Perez, I'll use my Base TPer to exit the mission to use my base telepads to hop to those hazard zones.

    Capes?

If you have the Magic Super Booster, the high collar capes are available at level 1. And for Male and Huge models, you can add onto it any available cape pattern (either having that accessibility is a bug, or female models not having that accessibility is a bug, see here).
  6. While the anonymous neg rep on the forums only led to Trolling and Hard Feelings, such a system may have a use in Real Life. I saw someone with Christmas lights on their house last night. I felt like putting in their mailbox a piece of paper where I draw a big red dot and label it: "I consider Xmas lights between Thanksgiving and Dec 1 to be too early, so imagine how big a jerk I consider you."

What?! Surely that can not be so! This must be a trap devised by my Trickster brother, Loki.
  8. In Closed Beta for Customization and again in Open many of us had a... um... spirited... debate with BAB over this.

He and the other Devs are sticking by their guns that for Role-Play and PvP recognition issues that they won't allow a villain's healing aura be disguised as a hero's healing aura.

Yes, you and I see that as inherently illogical and can cite precedent after precedent where both in the comic book world and in this game that those RP and PvP rules are already broken and excepted. But, there's no budging here. Not worth re-fighting it.

Maybe, just maybe when we get villainified Empaths fighting heroified Pain Dominators in PvP, they'll see how silly the position is and change it. But even if that change of heart were to happen, they wouldn't have the time to do anything about it until after GR is released, so, it's not worth bringing up again until then.

Hey, I didn't put it to the tune of "Pretty Woman," I know that DR has exclusive rights to that.

Good. This means you now have the free time to animate for us some stable server maps!

And BAB knows about it and is working on a fix. There's a few other minor bugs related to walking that have fixes in the pipeline.

    Bad Mapserving

I sent in a /petition when it happened to me three times in quick succession in Atlas Park on Virtue and heard others were having problems.

Make sure you say what zone and server this has been happening to you -- mapserver disconnects are not always universal and can hit just one server or just one zone.

    The forgotten

Some of those were developmental dead ends. Some were flawed and never saw the light of day (The Vault); some were flawed and there were attempted fixes that never worked out right (Cathedral of Pain); some were implemented but never became popular (but to minority who liked it, they feel abandoned); some are good systems, but there are more pressing needs than to continue to develop them and only so much time in the day.

Just look at the legacy TFs being admittedly too long and clunky... should they fix them or write new ones? (Although, seeing the MA tool in use, I'm getting less and less inclined to give the Devs a bye on the whole 'revamping old TFs is too much work' excuse.)

If something has potential for real future growth, the Devs do develop it. After all, they just hired a content designer whose part-time job is to continue to develop the Mission Architect (fixed maps, new Dev Choices, etc...).

To run the 300 baud modem to get onto the US Dept of Agriculture BBS to download some color games for that swanky new EVGA monitor.

Base speed is 14.32 mph. To get to untoggle-able base speed of 30 mph, you'd need 109% speed buffs from IOs. So... how'd you do that?

How do you know his contract was up?

Publicly, Zeb suddenly stopped posting and replying to PMs. Two months later we learned that he was no longer with Cryptic and that any further inquiries were met with silence.

That seems an odd way to go for simply not having a contract renewed.

Buy a Visa Gift Card (Debit Card) from a store or bank. Enter that card number in as payment info. As soon as it accepts, cancel payment so that it's never used (if you have no intention of paying for real for the second month or want to use the prepaid game cards).

  20. While we may never know who was really responsible for choking CoH development during the Gang of 15 time, there is this point to consider:

When NCSoft bought out the IP, every single Dev still working on CoH plus a few more who had been moved off of CoH to other Cryptic projects jumped the Cryptic ship to be part of the NCSoft family.

Now, it would seem rather odd that if NCSoft had been the bad guy and was the one strangling CoH development that so many Devs would have so readily signed up with the company that had been strangling CoH.

And if NCSoft really was the culprit for CoH cutbacks, then what does that say about life at Cryptic that almost 20 Devs would rather work for the strangler than stay at Cryptic?

    Jus' sayin'.
